THE STUDIO DOOR

Welcome to 2017. Wondering what to expect for the New Year from The Studio Door? Naturally, we will continue with returning exhibits that artists and patron’s love. This month, for example, 4•UP returns. You might remember that last year, 4•UP explored established, traditional artists along with emerging artists using contemporary techniques to convey their creative messages. This year, we will be exploring how painters approach both the subject matter of internal and external environments. I think the combination of these artists offer an exceptional scope mastering thought and vision. Two artists in the gallery for two weeks so you can double your pleasure with two exhibits and two receptions! We hit it out of the park this week with the creative and professional development classes that you’ve come to know The Studio Door for. Hyacinthe, Mr. Maxx Moses, and myself will be on hand to help you get your artistry jump started for 2017. Registrations are open for January and February sessions. Check out the impressive jurors that we have lined up for our national shows. The 3rd Annual Crow Show will be juried by Kathy Kelsey Foley, Director of Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. The museum is known for its international Birds in Art exhibition running since 1976. The new exhibit Tavern will be juried by renown photographer Rawi Nanakul, who is also the founder of Sacramento’s successful The Art of Beer now in its 3rd year. Celebrating Pride Month, PROUD will showcase LGBTQ artists and be juried by Alex Fialho, Visual AIDS Programs Director / Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Research and Curatorial Associate. You can read up about each of them on the website under The Galleries > Jurors. The Studio Door has outlined new opportunities for the community to encourage businesses, educators and artists to think outside the box. Art acquisitions, event sponsorships, gallery rentals, artists tours and more are on the table for those adventurous enough to join in San Diego’s active arts community. As you may have already noticed by the two page spread announcement, The Studio Door has joined forces with Mission Federal ArtWalk and San Diego Visual Arts Network on The Business of Art Scholarship. Get your application in today. Mentorship by The Studio Door, sponsored by San Diego Visual Arts Network, with a free booth donated by Mission Federal Art Walk (April 29/30). This is an awesome opportunity to focus your creativity and understand the art industry first hand. It’s shaping up to be a big year. And I haven’t even mentioned my upcoming ‘Art to Market Moment’ YouTube series! Keep your eyes out for the premiere of that one on social media later this month. Happy New Year. Keep Living Art!

Following where ever his creative muse takes him, Jackson Thilenius has no fear to explore diverse subject matter in his body of work that embraces local counterculture portraits to animal rights. Figurative narratives, not always easy to view, is at the heart of his art. Their visual stories provide a subversive edge, which one assumes balances his other meticulous profession as an Architect. After receiving a degree in Atlanta, Jackson has settled in San Diego, and his work has been exhibited extensively throughout Southern California.

Realist oil painter, Nancy Plank shares her sublime visions on canvas that imply a spiritual connection to the floral world, most often her passion for the Rose. Whether she is working in her Little Italy studio or volunteering in the rose garden at Balboa Park, Plank is drawn into this delicate world. She has an uncanny ability to reveal a visual truth within her still lives that immediately connect the viewer with what she sees, feels and experiences. Nancy Plank has exhibited extensively in San Diego.

Oil paintings of visceral emotions and complex rawness expose the inner world of artist Patrick Brown. In doing so, they also reflect the confusion and reality of living in a time where our culture finds itself uncertain of the future and fear is exposed as hate crimes see a resurgence. Brown’s artwork has a universal appeal that has allowed it to be seen on several ABC Television Network programs, in B.B. Kings Blues Clubs, and at The Escondido Arts Partnership Municipal Gallery.
