THE BUSINESS OF ART SCHOLARSHIP February 10 Deadline

Becoming an artist that gets paid isn’t just about being able to create beautiful artwork, its about becoming a professional. If you have a strong interest in being an artist and have begun to build a body of work, The Business of Art scholarship may be the next step for you to navigate the complex art industry while participating in this year’s Mission Federal ArtWalk. To ensure a successful launch at this year’s festival, the artist will receive personalized mentoring from Patric Stillman, artist and owner of The Studio Door, and receive an exceptional media package provided by San Diego Visual Arts Network. If selected, you will receive the necessary assistance to put together a successful artwalk booth, navigate media opportunities, prepare your portfolio, establish a 12-month action plan, and received continued assistance to achieve your goals throughout 2017. The Business of Art scholarship is presented by Mission Federal ArtWalk, San Diego Visual Arts Network and The Studio Door for the 33rd Annual Mission Federal Artwalk [April 29 and 30, 2017]. There is no application fee for this opportunity. MENTOR - PATRIC STILLMAN

THIRD ANNUAL THE CROW SHOW Our fine feathered friends make their way back to the gallery. 56 artists from 20 states are featured in this edition of the popular visual arts exhibition.

The Crow Show flies back into the gallery this month. I love this exhibition! Of our annual programming, this is the only one that is a themed, juried show. Nearly 200 works representing our feathered neighbors have now been included in the three incarnations. It’s fascinating to see how artists bring these birds to life each year. Great appreciation goes out to our juror Kathy Kelsey Foley, Director of The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum (Wausau, Wisconsin) who had the difficult task in narrowing down the art that appears in the gallery and on-line this year. The Woodson Art Museum has organized the acclaimed BIRDS IN ART exhibition since 1976. Her experience with both art and birds depicted in artworks really brought something special to our exhibition. Take a moment to review the museum’s website at www.lywam.org and if you find yourself in nearby, you should really take advantage of stopping in to see the museum and its sculpture garden. I hope you can make it in to the gallery to see the fantastic beasts of the air this month. If not, make sure to check it out on line. Artwork is for sale and we hope that you can continue to support the arts. Making Murals with Maxx was rescheduled due to the monsoon that created havoc throughout Southern California. It has been rescheduled for February 11th. Make sure to register for the workshop along with new sessions of our creative and business classes. With diverse themes of urban to gallery art, beer culture and LGBTQ Pride, three very different exhibitions are coming up at The Studio Door later this year and now have open calls. Take a look and see if any of them are of interest to you in reaching your own goals as an artist. The Studio Door received has received a lot of press recently with the 4•UP exhibition, Business of Art Scholarship and our studio artists’ exhibitions. None were more engaging than my recent op-ed to Voice of San Diego. While I was responding to an earlier commentary that claimed there were no opportunities for artists in San Diego, my letter to the editor hit a nerve with artists posting a wide range of complaints. Bread & Salt is going to continue the dialogue later this month with a community forum. Keep Living Art!

My studio is in my home where I love to create in acrylic and mixed media on canvas. I use many layers of color and texture to build depth in my work, creating abstract backgrounds and compositions. My still life works will often feature simple recognizable objects from everyday life to evoke comfortable emotions for the viewer. My goal with THE OBSERVER was to create an atmosphere of haze and fog, with the crow boldly perched, observing the world around. Appearing on this page, Gina is a character that reappears in my “Ted and Friends” collection. She is a part of a whimsical and amusing series featuring a sweet little innocent bird and his funky bird friends. They all really love flowers and the simple everyday things we sometimes miss. My intention with these pieces is to add happiness and a little fun to our crazy world.

CAROL SEIBOLD WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA

I have always had an affinity for birds. Perhaps it’s my fascination with the power of flight and the consequent freedom that wings afford these lovely creatures. Birds are delicate and beautiful and free and seem to inhabit a world parallel to ours, near at hand but a bit secret. They are also avatars of glorious song and color and symbolize our highest aspirations. The crow is a particularly fascinating bird to me, given their intelligence, resourcefulness and irrepressible playfulness. I feel sure that if they could talk, they’d tell the best jokes and perhaps reveal some profound observations on life. I am convinced they are the possessors of magic. My work speaks of my ideals and is truly a reflection of who I am. I long for freedom and beauty and to live in a magical world. And oh, to be able to fly….
