THE STUDIO DOOR

A few days ago, in the cover of dark, a coward scrawled hateful words across the backdoor of our new gallery, HYPE at The Studio Door. Though the message was presumably meant for one of my neighbors, its misguided efforts profoundly disturbed the peace of my entire block. Fortunately, that was very short lived. The inciteful message did not create fear as intended but instead greater compassion. The Studio Door artists found ourselves standing as one alongside of our neighbors, families and friends. This is indeed the North Park that continues to inspire me with its diversity. It’s a community that I can call home. A safe place for me to be who I am. The gallery takes on a lighthearted theme of creativity by focusing on the lifestyle of the TAVERN. While North Park may be the craft capital of the West, this exhibition feels like a natural extension of my Midwestern roots. My father, James Stillman was a key figure of Rhar Malting Co. (Shakopee, MN), who provides malt and industry related brewing supplies across the globe. I plan to hang a beautiful etched glass tribute that was created for him by Rhar when he retired. Our next door pilot project, HYPE at The Studio Door continues into its second month. Quite a few new artists have stepped up to learn the reality of the gallery experience from the inside and showcase their artistry as well. Its open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Definitely worth your time to stop in. This Spring seems to have The Studio Door taking to the streets of San Diego. Like our participation with this year’s ArtWalk, The Studio Door will also be creating the first visual arts gallery on May 20th at the 21st Annual San Diego County Credit Union Festival of Arts in North Park: GALLERY IN THE STREET. The gallery will be located off University Avenue by URBN Pizza and we will be holding two receptions at 2 PM and 7 PM so plan your schedule accordingly. All of the art work will be by local emerging and professional artists. June’s national exhibition of LGBTQ artists is shaping up to be an exciting exhibition. PROUD continues to accept submissions through May 5th. If you are a part of the LGBTQ community and an artist, please consider submitting your work & if you are local, check out the sister program PROUD at PRIDE. Hope to see you soon. Keep Living Art!
