THE STUDIO DOOR

Over I’ve been working double duty in the art sphere recently. In addition to managing The Studio Door, the annual art fair Art San Diego is in full swing as I prepare this issue of The Monthly. San Diego Visual Arts Network asked me to curate this year’s San Diego Art Prize booth. What a pleasure to work with some of San Diego’s exceptional established and emerging artists whom I haven’t crossed paths with before. I even got to help the fair out by stepping in for another gallery to discuss The Art of Collecting with patrons looking to build their collections. The fair is a big deal for San Diego as it brings together nearly everyone who is engaged in art in the region to see, be seen, reconnect with patrons, find inspiration and make new partnerships. October is the kick off of our annual year end arts run down. The 3rd Annual Open Studios San Diego will bring together over 100 artists this year across the County of San Diego who will be opening their studios, sharing their artwork and offering personal insights into their creative process. We kick off with a reception on Saturday, October 7 followed by a weekend of self guided tours on October 14 and 15. You’ll find all the details you need in this edition of The Monthly. November - December transforms the gallery into an arts marketplace, where for six weeks you can find some of the most amazing works of art for under $500 from artists that usually charge a lot more for their artwork. Our grand experience continues for another month. HYPE at The Studio Door offers artists the opportunity to hang, market and sell their artworks while getting the opportunity to be behind the scenes. This co-op styled opportunity will not be a lengthy visitor so if you have the interest, consider joining in for November. There are a few walls still available. I’m working hard at developing a lot of new surprises for 2018, which I’ll hold off sharing this month but I do have to share one announcement. Escondido Arts Partnership [EAP] has agreed to partner with The Studio Door on 2018’s 50 TO WATCH. I believe that the biennial program is our most important exhibition as it brings national attention to San Diego’s creative community. Its the one event that we really see the diversity of work being created in our region; installations, paintings, sculpture, mixed media, watercolors, fiber art, and more. As a member artist of EAP, I’m thrilled to also be partnering with them on our tent pole program. EAP is also joining me along with several exceptional non-profits to bring a special screening to World AIDS Day. You’ll find some information on the previous page. Look for complete details Online and in next month’s The Monthly. Summer is over so you should consider getting back in the saddle in terms of creating and creative commerce. Our weekly paint nights and professional development incubator labs are back in full swing. Let me help you regain your rhythm and keep your energy up to make a splash with your artistry. Looking forward to seeing you again soon.

2018 COMMUNITY BENEFIT PROGRAM

BECAUSE AIDS IS NOT OVER ESCONDIDO + SAN DIEGO

Postcards From The Edge:

CREATE • DONATE • ACQUIRE • SUPPORT In conjunction with Visual AIDS 20th Postcards From The Edge Since 1998, Visual AIDS has produced the annual Postcards From The Edge exhibition and benefit sale of original, postcard-sized works on paper by established and emerging artists. With the collaborative effort to bring Day With(out) Art’s premiere film screening to San Diego this year, local Visual AIDS Artists+ members Patrick Brown and Patric Stillman are heading up a west coast edition of Visual AIDS long running benefit Postcards From The Edge.

Create Your Own Art Postcard Workshops: • Saturday, November 4, 2017 at The Studio Door • Saturday, November 5, 2017 at Escondido Arts Partnership Any and all artists over 18 years old are encourage to create and donate a 4” x 6” original work on paper for exhibition and benefit sale.

Exhibition: A portion of the postcards will be anonymously exhibited and on sale locally at Escondido Arts Partnership, The Studio Door, and Media Arts Center San Diego through out 2017; while others will be sent directly to Visual AIDS in New York for their annual benefit in January 2018.

Locally, cards will be sold for $75.

One third of the proceeds will go directly to VISUAL AIDS in New York, one third will be utilized to support the expenses of San Diego’s screening Day With(out) Art, and one third will be distributed to local HIV+ artists selected by Escondido Arts Partnership and The Studio Door. Cards sent to New York will 100% benefit the programs of Visual AIDS. Though this is the first event of its kind in San Diego, Postcards From the Edge is known within the art world as the most exciting and affordable way to add to a collection, Postcards From the Edge offers a unique opportunity for buyers to acquire original, postcard-sized artwork. Offered on a first-come, first-served basis, each piece is exhibited anonymously, and the identity of the artist is revealed only after the work is purchased. With the playing field leveled, all participants can take home a piece by a famous artist, or one who’s just making their debut in the art world. Nonetheless, collectors walk away with something beautiful, a piece of art they love!

Location:

San Diego Presentation Sponsors: POZabilities, Media Arts Center San Diego and The Studio Door San Diego Community Partners: The Archive Project, Escondido Arts Partnership, FilmOut San Diego and San Diego Human Dignity Foundation Newly commissioned videos by Mykki Blanco, Cheryl Dunye & Ellen Spiro, Reina Gossett, Thomas Allen Harris, Kia Labeija, Tiona McClodden and Brontez Purnell will premiere at the Whitney Museum of American Art on World AIDS Day with a special one day series of screenings in San Diego on December 2nd at the Digital Cinema Theater in North Park. ALTERNATE ENDINGS, RADICAL BEGINNINGS is the 28th iteration of Visual AIDS’ longstanding Day With(out) Art project. Curated by Erin Christovale and Vivian Crockett for Visual AIDS, the video program prioritizes Black narratives within the ongoing AIDS epidemic, commissioning seven new and innovative short videos. In spite of the impact of HIV/AIDS within Black communities, these stories and experiences are constantly excluded from larger artistic and historical narratives. In 2016 African Americans represented 44% of all new HIV diagnoses in the United States. Given this context, it is increasingly urgent to feature a myriad of stories that consider and represent the lives of those housed within this statistic. ALTERNATE ENDINGS, RADICAL BEGINNINGS seeks to highlight the voices of those that are marginalized within broader Black communities nationwide, including queer and trans folks. The commissioned projects include intimate meditations of young HIV positive protagonists; a consideration of community-based HIV/AIDS activism in the South; explorations of the legacies and contemporary resonances within AIDS archives; a poetic journey through New York exploring historical traces of queer and trans life, and more. Together, the videos provide a platform centering voices deeply impacted by the ongoing epidemic.
