THE STUDIO DOOR

Here we are again, looking at the final few weeks of the year. I can’t be too surprised that 2017 went by so quickly. The Studio Door took on a wide variety of community collaborations, which kept the pace of the gallery exhilarating. Lesson learned once again is that the power of art and community engagement can not be understated. The Studio Door rose to it greatest potential this year with several outstanding national exhibitions like the PROUD • LGBTQIA Exhibition and Artistry Through Deaf Eyes; Mentoring for Art Walk’s Business of Art; Curating San Diego Visual Arts Network’s Art Prize booth at Art San Diego; creating an outdoor gallery for North Park’s Festival of the Arts; and opening our co-op gallery HYPE at The Studio Door. Not too bad for a small gallery closing in on only three years of activity. We still have a few weeks to go so perhaps its not really the time to be too reflective. Our work isn’t complete yet. Holiday Art Market, Postcards From The Edge and A Day With(out) Art are all in the pipeline to round out the year. HOLIDAY ART MARKET is The Studio Door’s thank you to all the local artists who participated in the gallery, the studios and the classes for the past 12 months. We’ve invited over 150 artists to bring in small, affordable works for the marketplace that transforms the gallery for six weeks. Its an incredible opportunity to support local artists and pick up original art under $500. I hope you keep us in mind and join us in the gallery during Shop Small Saturday, Sidewalk Sales, Mistletoe Market and other special events coming up in North Park. This is the first year that San Diego has actively engaged in Visual AIDS’ long-running benefits Postcards from the Edge and Day With(out) Art. Artists and community members will be creating art postcards that will be exhibited to raise money to support programs, artists and organizations that support HIV+ artists. Anyone over 18 is encouraged to create postcards & we have two free workshops scheduled to share in the fun; one at Escondido Arts Partnership and the other at The Studio Door. Postcards will then go on sale for $75. The exhibition is anonymous so patrons won’t know if they selected an professional artists or community leader. Artist Patrick Brown, POZabilities and Media Arts Center San Diego worked with The Studio Door to bring a series of free public screenings for Day With(out) Art. A handful of films created by HIV+ African American artists have been created for this year’s international day to respond and mourn the AIDS crisis. The short films premiere at the Whitney in New York on World Aids Day (Dec 1) and we have secured them to screen in San Diego on December 2. The films will be screened at the Museum of Modern Art in Los Angeles and Chicago as well so we are extremely pleased to have pulled this together. The next time you are in North Park stop in to say hello, see what’s happening in the studios and perhaps pick something up from the galleries. Keep living art!
