THE STUDIO DOOR

If I look back at the short history of The Studio Door, I see that each year takes on its own focal point. The first year was focused on executing the business model that I had talked up during development. The second year was about saying ‘Yes’ to new opportunities while keeping the programming strengths learned during the first year. Now, fully into a third year of activity, it seems that this year is all about collaborations and building new connections within the arts community. I’m excited to share programming in the gallery with Sparks Gallery, Alexander Salazar Fine Art and Art Produce. In an arts community that often feels disjointed, its fascinating to see and hear from these diverse galleries. I’m really looking forward to hearing what they have to share at the Artists + Galleries panel and excited to share the artwork coming from gallery owners who are also artists. As you know, doors are made to enter AND exit. The Studio Door is no different. This month, we bid adieu to one of our fellow artists as we welcome a new talent into our studios. We say adieu to our friend, fellow artist Hyacinthe Baron. She is heading on to new adventures as she pursues new artistic goals. I knew she was something special the first time that I saw her walk in the gallery during our FASHION exhibition. Like royalty, she floated in commanding the room wearing a fantastic handprinted coat of her own. Little did I know that I was in the presence of an American Master, who was about to positively change the lives of the artists at The Studio Door. In this issue, I devoted some space to look back on her residency and share some of the thoughts from her fellow studio artists. Coming IN the door is a muralist and portrait artist whose work will catch your breath. Cassandra Schramm joins us this August. I’ll be featuring her work next month so make sure you open September’s The Monthly. I hope you’ll come by to see her work in the upcoming weeks. Open Studios San Diego is officially open for 2017. If you are a studio artist, make sure you get the scoop and jump into this year’s event. By the number of calls of past and new artists wanting to participate, it looks like it will be a fantastic year. Keep Living Art!

“I always wanted to be involved in the arts and remember drawing, painting, and taking photographs at a young age. I studied art at the University of San Diego but decided to major in Business Administration instead of art, because the art scene in San Diego wasn’t very open to new hires at the time (early 2000s). After working for 8 years in international business and web development, I felt it was time to start something new. My family encouraged me to start my own business and I just jumped right into it without looking back. I decided to combine my interest in art with my business background to start an art gallery that focused on the local art scene. My family also helped with the restoration and design of the space, and it has been a great family project to work on together.” Sonya Sparks Owner and Gallery Director Sonya Sparks launched the Sparks Gallery in downtown San Diego in 2013. The gallery reopened on March 1st, 2015 after restoration to the historic building. Sonya studied art in conjunction with obtaining her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at the University of San Diego.

Jessica Amaya Gallery Operations Director Hailing from Los Angeles, Jessica Amaya was a Founding Volunteer at LA Plaza de Cultura y Arts in Los Angeles and also worked for the Los Angeles Art Show. She was recently selected to join the Steering Committee for Rising Arts Leaders of San Diego in 2016. Jessica received a Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities/Humanistic Studies with a Minor in Educational Technology from San Diego State University. She worked in human resources management for several prominent companies in Los Angeles and the San Diego area prior to her transition into the arts. Emily Knapp Artist Liaison With over a decade working in advertising and marketing in NYC, Emily Knapp helped global brands fight malaria, handcraft small batch whiskey, launch first generation technology products, and bring manufacturing at scale back to America. Knapp recently settled in San Diego where she plans to channel her talent for building brands into supporting and promoting Sparks Gallery’s many talented artists.

H YACINTHE BARON HYACINTHE LIVES LIFE LIKE ITS A DREAM AND WE ARE ALL BETTER OFF FOR HAVING HAD STUDIO TIME WITH HER. AS SHE BOLDLY MOVES ON TO OTHER ART PROJECTS BEYOND THE STUDIO DOOR, HER FELLOW STUDIO ARTISTS WANTED TO SHARE A FEW THOUGHTS ABOUT HOW SHE IMPACTED THEIR ART AND LIVES.

“Hyacinthe taught me to believe in my imagination.” - Evelyn Loss “This artist is one tough cookie. Here is a woman who truly lived the life that we artists dream of and everything that goes with it that we can’t imagine. She has touched my life with her love and advice. Heck, she even took the time to tie it all up in a bow of wit and laughter. If I can ever figure out how to unwrap this gift, I think I may just be able to conquer the world.” - Patric Stillman “She says things that I feel but can’t put into words. The first time she blew my mind was when she turned the phrase that an artist’s goal is to stir emotions in others. I thought to myself, ‘YES! That’s what I want to do with my art.’ From then on, I could listen to her all day and find new inspiration.” - Christina Ilene Thomas

“Hyacinthe freed my hands completely. I’m no longer held back by the use of a brush. Now, my fingers fly across the canvas breathing life into my work. She really helped me to approach my art differently. The barriers between me and the canvas are gone. Amazing.” - Stefan Talian

Hyacinthe always has wonderful energy for art. She loved to share moments about her Madison Avenue gallery and ALL ears would be listening! She will, indeed, be missed on the scene of The Studio Door. Bon voyage, dear Hyacinthe. - Dixie McCarthy

I listened to her like a neophyte artist for every word of wisdom she says is golden, I’m fortunate and thankful that I met her. - Dennis Dizon

“Hyacinthe is the type of person you’ll only meet once in a lifetime. At every turn in the 20th Century, she was at the pulse of the art scene as history was being made. Her stories and life experiences are incredibly inspiring. She changed the way I see art.” - Chris Smith “She gave me permission to be an artist.” - Crisinda Lyons

She has so much talent and drive. I am looking forward to seeing what she comes up with next. I have no doubt that she’ll set the world on fire once more. - Danné Sadler
