Solar Together Suffolk How to register for a group buying scheme to get solar panels for your home at a competitive price and gain the benefits of having solar panels and help Suffolk move towards net-zero emissions. Solar Together Suffolk is an innovative scheme offering high-quality solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and battery storage. It is a group-buying scheme, which brings Suffolk households together to get high-quality solar panels at a competitive price, helping you through the process and keeping you informed at every stage. It is free to register and there is no obligation to purchase. If you already have solar panels installed you can also register to have battery storage added to your existing solar panels to maximise the benefits of your system. A Statement regarding Afghan Refugees from Babergh Mid Suffolk Council

On Wednesday 18 August, the Government announced its new resettlement scheme for Afghan refugees. Whilst the full details are yet to be confirmed, it is crystal clear that the Government needs local authorities everywhere to step up and support this national effort. All councils in Suffolk are committed to this cause. We have already helped a small number of Afghan interpreters and their families to resettle in Suffolk, in addition to ongoing work to support unaccompanied asylum seeking children and other refugees entering the UK. In the coming days and weeks, the district, borough and county councils will continue working with the Government to do what we can to provide assistance to vulnerable refugees. Times like this call for acts of humanity. Suffolk will play its part.

Something to ponder… ‘Love is… ’ Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 4 5

If you are able to help, please contact church warden, Peter, on 384069 A message of encouragement from our Bishops: Bishop Martin Seeley and Bishop Mike Harrison Our mission statement says that we intend to become “flourishing congregations, making a difference”. The Gospel invites us to celebrate the good news of God’s saving love. That’s what lies behind our shared diocesan vision for Growing in God: God wants us to grow as his beloved children, he wants us to grow as loving communities, he wants us to grow in sharing his love beyond ourselves in both our words and actions. We cannot determine the fruit of growing in number or growing younger. We cannot compel people to have a faith – though we can do many simple things to make that growth possible – planting and watering – clearing the weeds and brambles – sowing seeds – not being fatalistic and believing in God’s providence. But we can determine what we do in seeking to grow in depth, attending to deepening our own faith and Christian practice, and engaging in actions that helps us to grow in influence

From The Chair..

Since my last article the Council has met face-to-face twice for the first time since the pandemic started. It was great to see a number of familiar faces as well as meet some people in person for the first time! It certainly makes voting easier too. We are grateful to Rev Susan for allowing us to meet at the Church. At our August meeting we said goodbye to Debbie Cotton-Soares who has resigned as a councillor – many thanks to her for her work on the Council. We also co-opted two councillors to fill vacancies Helen Long and Helen Ball and we look forward to welcoming them to our September meeting. We will be discussing the planning application that has been submitted for 42 houses and 2 barns at the Grove Farm site at the September meeting. You might remember that full planning permission was granted in 2015 for this site but as building was not started this permission has now expired. A new developer has now resubmitted the previous application. The site was also included (as it had existing permission) in the Stradbroke Neighbourhood Plan. You can see the plans by going to the Mid Suffolk District Council website at https://planning.baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk/online-applications/ and searching for reference DC/21/04377. Our next meeting will be held on Monday 13th September 2021 in the Church at 7.30pm and will also be streamed live on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/StradbrokePC

July And August 2021 Meetings Of Stradbroke W.I. On July 8th the members were able to meet again in the community centre, under strict covid rules , to enjoy a real life meeting with each other and to be impressed by our speaker Gill Denny who provided our entertainment with a demonstration of Mediterranean cooking. For awhile we were transported to sunnier climes as we watched Gill deftly producing paella, pasta and a naughty cheesecake all on a couple of electric rings with a little Blue Peter help of here’s something I made earlier. Gill chatted her way through the demonstration giving us a brief history of her catering activities plus a few useful tips like slicing and freezing left over lemons so that they are ready for the gin and tonic sessions, excellent. Best of all, as we had all come armed with a dish and a fork, we were able to sample her splendid dishes and I must say they were really very tasty, thank you Gill please come again. There was a little business to deal with, birthdays etc and plenty of general news and chat for all to catch up with. A lovely evening and the ladies left looking forward to the August summer supper evening. The August meeting was our annual summer get together when the committee provide a bumper salad buffet followed by some pretty wicked desserts and cheese. The 12th arrived and the committee setup the hall ready to greet the members later that evening. As we were able to use the kitchen we set to and created a splendid spread then nipped home to titivate ready for the evening. The ladies came, saw and conquered the buffet in great style aided by a glass or two of Pimms most satisfactory. Gwyneth provided a quiz where all the answers related to colours and this filled the time with much laughter and chatter so that in the end it was chocolates and congratulations all round for our knowledgeable members. A happy evening was had by all and the committee retired home job well done and thanks to the washer uppers. Our next meeting will be on September 9th when Laurie Wiseman will talk to us about a year in the life of a bee, so how about adding to the buzz ,yes I know awful pun but who can resist, and coming to try us out for the evening and learn about all we have to offer in friendship, education and all sorts of activities. There will be a warm welcome no pressure and maybe even a cuppa if we are allowed so come on be brave no age barrier all welcome . Looking forward to seeing you all cheers for now. Prue

Stradbroke Village Archive

We looked at the list of Doctors on the Stradbroke Archive who have cared for the residents of this village since the early 18th century and learnt that it wasn’t until the Apothecary Act of 1815 that compulsory apprenticeship and formal qualifications were required for apothecaries, (modern day GPs). Then in 1854, The Medical Act – the forerunner to the British Medical Council, was established, whose work we know today. So, with this in mind we started looking through the names and history of our surgeons and medics. A note caught our attention attached to Dr. Charles Read. (Stradbroke doctor 1851 – 1890) in which a reference was made to a court appearance in which he testified to the presence of arsenic in a pint of porter. Curiosity took over and triggered a search through the archive in which we found a report of Letitia Newman of Stradbroke who was both charged and found guilty, of the attempted murder of Badingham’s William Keeble. The full transcript from the news report of April 1864, is on the Stradbroke Digital Village Archive.

Transcript of a report on the trial of Letitia Newman · Stradbroke Village Archive (stradbrokearchive.org.uk) The basic facts were that Letitia was employed as a housekeeper by William Keeble shortly before his wife died. After the event, Letitia and William became intimate, and the time came when she told him that she thought she was pregnant. William sacked her and told her to leave his home, but she refused. A fight followed and the local policeman advised William to take her back to her own home in Stradbroke. On the way, they stopped at an Inn and ordered a drink. William went outside to check his horse, and Letitia took the advantage to slip arsenic into his drink. The landlady, who saw her do this, went outside, and told William what she had witnessed. Letitia was arrested, charged, and brought to court. At the trial Dr Charles Read (surgeon)’s statement said that the mug was brought to him with the sediment in it. After recognised tests the doctor confirmed that there was no doubt whatever it was arsenic. The jury found Leticia guilty of attempted murder and the judge sentenced her to life imprisonment. The 1871 census return finds her in the women’s prison at Knaphill, Woking, Surrey. We couldn’t find any reference to Letitia in the 1881 census. However, sadly, we did find a death registration dated 1876, of a Leticia Newman, aged sixty, registered in Guilford, which fits the profile. William Keeble continued as a butcher, married Mary Ann Jillings (who was 18 years his junior) at the end of 1863 and went on to father several children. As for Dr Charles Read: He retired from his practice in 1890 after 39 years of caring for the village sick but had no option but to write to The British Medical Council because The Hoxne Union Workhouse had refused to pay him a pension. The BMC wrote to the Union and asked that they read out a statement from them noting their displeasure. The Hoxne Union governing body did just that, but we don’t know the outcome. It was well-hopped and dark in appearance owing to the use of brown malt. Ann Readman, SARA

Wingfield & District Gardening Club

Matt Tanton-Brown from Place for Plants in East Bergholt came to talk, when finally we met again on ‘No Dig Gardening’. First remove all the perennial weeds then it is most important to use mulch to improve the soil and encourage worms to do the work for you. Potato peelings, cardboard, egg shells, tea bags (careful there is no plastic), small prunings and bark, leaf mold adds humus to the soil. Grass cuttings are high in nitrogen and should be added in layers. They are loved by dahlias and if placed on the surface deter slugs and snails. Composted straw is good for sandy soil. He stressed that one should not use peat but John Innes mix for general use. Mulch should generally be used in Autumn keep it away from stems with shredded cardboard. Mulching reduces the necessity for digging thus reducing ones carbon footprint. We next meet again on 21st August. Please contact Priscilla 01379 384945 email priscillaawilliamson@gmail.com

Stradbroke Sports & Community Centre - Public Consultation

Your Community Centre needs your opinions! On Saturday October 9th from 10am-2pm and Sunday October 10th 10am-12midday we will be holding a second Public Consultation in the Main Hall. This will once again be an opportunity for you to come along and see the proposed drawings for the Extension to the Club Room. Following the first Public Consultation in 2020 we have listened to your comments, made appropriate changes to the drawings and also brought the Changing Rooms into line with the FA and ECB recommendations. But – we still need you to come along and see how we are proposing to update your Community Centre and make it a venue worthy of the 21st Century with new meeting rooms, additional kitchens and toilets. These will accommodate more activities and events to be held here. Please come along and speak to our Architect, the Trustees and our Fund-Raising Team about this exciting new venture. The extension will only happen if we can raise sufficient capital to build it. Consequently, there will be a major fund-raising programme over the next 12 months including applications to the Lottery, CrowdFunding and sponsorship. In addition, we will hold a variety of fund-raising events and hope that clubs and organisations who make use of the current facility will also take part in raising enough to help make the whole project a reality. Stradbroke Cinema

Welcome back to Stradbroke Cinema. As many people have been unable to go on holiday this year we have chosen our own ‘Staycation’ films - all set in Britain. Even if you haven’t left Stradbroke we take you on a tour from the North of Scotland to Cornwall via Dorset and London in the company of some of our best British actors. On September 16th we will be showing Ammomite. A beautiful film set in 1840s Lyme Regis staring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan. This is based on the true story of Mary Anning, a pioneering palaeontologist whose work was appropriated by the male scientific establishment from which she was excluded. Her life is frustrating and lonely as she pursues her passion for fossils until Charlotte arrives and their love story begins. Superlative performances and wonderful scenery lift this film to be exceptional. Doors open at 7pm and the film starts at 7.30pm. It is no longer mandatory for you wear a mask during the performance but if you feel more comfortable doing so then please wear one. We will once again be having an interval half way through the film, with ice-cream on sale and the Bar will also be open. Tickets will be on sale from September 1st via the online booking system - £5.50 for adults, £3 for 16s and under. If you are unable to use the booking system tickets will be available on the door. We will continue taking card payments on the door and at the Bar. However we will never refuse cash! Book early to avoid disappointment! I am sure he would appreciate a visit from anybody in the vicinity. You can listen to Radio Stradbroke on www.radiostradbroke.co.uk on TuneIn Radio, or your Smart Speaker. Michael Hugman

Contact Club

The contact club takes place every Tuesday in Stradbroke Community Centre, however took the year off due to Covid. After a horrible year we are now back. We have had 3 meetings and all are so happy to be back. We are open from 10 00 am for coffee and a chat, we play cards, bingo etc. There will be a small charge of £1.00 to help our funds. If you would like to stay to lunch which is served at 12.00 its an extra £2.00. The contact club has been running 20 years to help the older community contact one and other, but is more important now than ever after the isolation we all faced through the Covid Pandemic. If you would like to join us on a Tuesday please contact myself. We would be happy to welcome you. stella.goddard@yahoo.com or 01379 384704 Stella Goddard

Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club

In the blink of an eye, the cricket season is almost over. It has been another eventful Summer, with the recurring theme of player availability, raising its ugly head. In fairness, most of the non-availabilities have been due to illness & injury. Amidst all of this, some good cricket has been played, including a 6 game winning streak, defeating unbeaten Earls Colne, which kept Stradbroke in mid table in the Two Counties League, but has also seen us qualify for Finals Day of the Suffolk 'Thank You NHS' T20 Cup, on September 12th. Personal milestones have been reached, James Gilbee took his 400th wicket for the Club, and there have been two centuries, from Matt Wise, his 3rd, part of a golden run with the bat in recent weeks, & a maiden hundred from Fergus Morgan, part of a 200 stand with Steve Perrin, the third highest in Stradbroke's history, so it has not all been doom and gloom. Tennis Club

Since the Tennis Club reopened following easement of the Government restrictions due to the pandemic, we have welcomed a number of new members and added additional social play evenings on Tuesdays as well as having social play afternoons on both Mondays and Thursdays. The Club hopes that all members are currently enjoying playing tennis and with all year round courts available play will be able to continue throughout the year. New members are always welcome so why not come and have a game. For further details give me a call on 01379 384557. As a registered Tennis Club with the Lawn Tennis Association the Club is required to have a Welfare Officer which provides a necessary link between the Club and the Lawn Tennis Association. The Club currently shares the Welfare Officer Role with Wortham Tennis Club but the Tennis Club's Committee is keen to appoint a member or someone who lives close by and can spare a hour or two every couple of months to become the Clubs Safeguarding Officer. On appointment the Club will make a donation to the persons chosen charity. If you are interested please give me a ring on 01379 384557. Non-members can also hire a court through Everyone Active on 01379 384376. Courts cost £8.00 an hour per court for adults and £4.00 an hour for the under 16s. The Club has recently ordered new roofing materials with the view to completing the necessary repairs to the Clubhouse roof hopefully in the coming weeks and prior to the onset of any heavy rain. Stradbroke White Hart Bowls Club

It is with great sadness to say how sorry we are to have lost a very special member and secretary of our bowls club. Julie will always be remembered for her sense of fun and commitment to the club, and her compassion and thoughtfulness to others. Our thoughts are with Roger, Carla and Ali and all her family. She will be sorely missed as not only a club member but a true friend to so many. Letters to the Editor

Julie Ann Ward Roger, Carla, Alison and family wish to thank everyone for their friendship, support and kindness shown towards Julie over the years, especially the last three years or so during her battle with cancer. Julie made so many friends both within the local community where she lived for the past 40 years but also during her working careers at Lloyds Bank, Stradbroke Post Office, the family run business of Riches Coaches, and more recently whilst delivering parcels locally and to the surrounding villages as a Hermes Courier. She was also widely recognised whilst walking Milo the miniature Dachshund in the village. She was also involved in supporting village organisations including fundraising for Stradbroke Toddler Group, the Primary School and High School, Stradbroke All Saints Church Sunday School, was a member of the Church Fund Raising Committee and the Parochial Church Council. Julie was also a member of Stradbroke White Hart bowls club for more than 40 years and Club Secretary for the past 17 years. She and her band of helpers organised the Prize Bingo evenings over the years raising thousands of pounds for the club and prior to this, for the organisations she was previously involved in. Julie loved her family and was so brave and positive during her illness and was still planning to join them in various celebrations she had organised for the future right up to the last week of her life. Roger and the family have been totally overwhelmed by the number of kind messages of sympathy and support, cards and flowers they have received and especially the lovely reflections of her life. She was such a loved, loving and special lady to her family and friends and a member of the local community who will be sadly missed by so many. Roger Ward The Johnson family would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended and supported us on the 26th June, and also to those, that gave prior to, and after the event. We made an amazing £458.00 for the British Heart Foundation, a very worthy cause. Thank you once again ! The Johnson family would like to invite family and friends of the late David Henry Johnson, who was suddenly taken from us on the 9th of April 2020, to celebrate his life to a Memorial Service at Stradbroke Church at 3pm, on Sat 2nd Oct. Everyone is welcome to join us for refreshments and memories afterwards, at the Red Feather Club, in Denham. Any proceeds will go to The British Heart Foundation. Many thanks.

Summer is my favourite season because it means that I can spend more time at home in Suffolk. This summer has been particularly humbling for me, presenting a number of Suffolk Heroes awards, in this area to Mr and Mrs Spall of Horham Stores. I was delighted to have the opportunity to present them with their certificate in person and to thank them for all they have done to help others during the Covid-19 pandemic. They have touched many lives and made a big difference during what has been a very difficult time for so many. Sadly my summer was then interrupted by the sudden recall of Parliament caused by the Taliban regaining control of Afghanistan. Many of us will remember where we were on September 11th, 2001 when the twin towers in New York were destroyed by Al-Quaeda terrorists. I also recall the day in 2005 when London was bombed by members of the same Islamic terrorist group. At that time, Afghanistan was used by Al-Qaeda as a base from which to conduct world terror against western nations, such as the USA and the United Kingdom. Whatever history’s verdict may be on the wisdom, conduct or shambolic conclusion of the 20-year war on Afghanistan, I remain in no doubt that it was right for Britain to intervene in the fight against Al-Qaeda and global terrorism. We were right to put British boots on the ground in Afghanistan and play our part in defeating the threat of Islamic terrorism. The lightning speed of the Taliban advance probably had two causes. The first is the failure of the west to win the hearts and minds of the rural communities of Afghanistan. The second is that once former President Trump had done his deal with the Taliban to withdraw US troops, the Taliban used the next 17 months for secret negotiations with many provinces to surrender without contest. We should also reflect that even though the Taliban has reclaimed control over Afghanistan (for the time being at least), this doesn’t mean that the safety of the world is under the same threat of terrorism now as we were some 20 or so years ago because thanks to the efforts of British armed forces, Al-Qaeda is no longer the threat it once was to the safety of innocent civilians in the United Kingdom. Our priority now must be to recognise our moral duty to protect and offer refuge to Afghan citizens who may now be at risk, particularly those who have supported our soldiers in the fight against Al-Qaeda. The Government has rightly announced a new resettlement scheme for Afghan refugees. As part of this scheme, it will rightly be asking our councils in Suffolk to do their part, and already, a small number of Afghan interpreters and their families have been helped to resettle in Suffolk. As we close this chapter in the history of Afghanistan, I am mindful that a number of Suffolk families have lost the lives of loved ones who served on the frontline of the conflict. We all owe those who sacrificed their lives a debt of gratitude for what they have done to make our country a safer place, and in protecting us against the threat of Islamic terrorism. Their sacrifice has not been in vain. www.drdanielpoulter.com
