WANTED: DISTRIBUTORS FOR NORTH STAFFORD AND SURROUNDING VILLAGES We are currently using our lovely Stone and Trentham teams to deliver The Stafford Local magazines through your door but we are hoping to find local people in Stafford to take over and sustain the distribution. You must be over 18, reliable, available between the 12th and the 17th of each month, have transport to collect your boxes and most of all have a desire to be part of your local community directory. Please email Alan on thestaffordlocal@gmail.com with your current position and relevant experience.

Just full of adverts? Yes! Our little monthly directory of local business is formed by me, a local business woman who couldn’t find the affordable advertising I wanted so decided to create it myself! Think of us as the value range of advertising—no frills if you will but then add great customer care, loyal customers (we must be doing something right!) and a direct distribution area which targets your desired audience. We do provide interesting reading but mostly about local business rather than ‘newspaper stories’. I would have to charge advertisers double to afford a journalist and photographer which defeats the aim of The Stafford Local, which is be a platform for small business to showcase themselves affordably and for the residents of North Stafford to find affordable yet LOCAL services.

See opposite for our simple and straight forward pricing or call Alan now to discuss your advertising needs, budget and ideas.

Gardening Galore

Our resident gardening guru Alan will be sharing his adventures in gardening with us over the next few coming issues so prepare to learn something new (Unless of course you already know all about biodynamic tomatoes or home made organic feeds‌..)

Fantastic Nettle Organic Feed The nastiest weed on the Planet - the Nettle, has a surprising benefit to Gardeners! We Bio-dynamic gardeners and growers have a very high regard for the common stinging nettle, using the leaves in sprays of several kinds. As well as using nettles as an activator on the compost heap, the organic gardener can use them as a liquid manure and as an aphicide. Nettle contains some amazing compounds and complex chemicals, high in Nitrogen and Potassium, Gardeners for generations have extracted it's nutrients with the zeal of a Gold Miner. 1. Wear some thick gardening gloves over a long-sleeved shirt and with a strong pair of scissors, gather a bag of young nettles, cut into 4" lengths and soak in a bucket of rainwater for a week. Strain and use undiluted as a control of aphids on roses and celery leaf miner. Add the mushy nettles to the compost heap OR better still:2. Nettle Brew as a liquid manure feed, add more rainwater to just cover the nettles (lay a brick on top to stop the leaves floating in too much water) and leave for about 4 weeks to allow a rich BREW to develop. Strain this into 2 litre recycled plastic bottles and store, or just leave the bucket outside in a secret place away from delicate noses! Put the used nettle mush onto the compost heap. Dilute the brew using 1 part brew to 10 parts rainwater and feed all your leafy vegetables at soil level. Perfect for salads, spinach, rhubarb, courgettes and squashes. No harm will come to any other vegetable or fast growing flower. Root vegetables and tomatoes benefit more from high potash feeds from Bonemeal or even liquid feeds made from COMFREY, in the same way as nettle brew. To advertise please call Alan on 07899 757138

Guide Dogs thanked their Volunteers during National Volunteers Week. To mark National Volunteers Week (1-7 June) Guide Dogs thanked our current volunteers and began appealing to local people to step forward and join us in our life-changing work. Hundreds of local people contribute to the work of Guide Dogs every week by fostering our breeding dogs and their puppies, doing street collections and sponsored walks, by driving our clients and dogs to appointments and by being sighted guides for people with visual impairments. The guide dog service is funded entirely by voluntary donations, and our volunteers are helping us to help more and more people with visual impairments every year. Our existing volunteers enjoy their roles with us and we are constantly amazed by the time and effort that they give to us. Sue, a local volunteer, says: “The people that I’ve met have enriched my life completely, including other volunteers, staff and guide dog owners. It is humbling to have met people who have lost all or part of their vision who are getting on with their lives. This is motivation enough to want to volunteer and I really feel I am part of something special.” Robert Rowley, a guide dog owner from Pattingham said: “Personally a guide dog has changed my life and it is a way of giving something back – it’s a really good thing to do. Guide Dogs are a great organization and are good to work with.” Valerie Jobes, Volunteering Consultant from Guide Dogs said: “We value and appreciate all of the work our volunteers do for us. There are so many ways to volunteer. We’re looking for volunteers to be puppy walkers, drivers, sighted guides and fundraisers. Volunteering is fun and rewarding – you know you'll be making a real difference by helping Guide Dogs enable blind and partially people to enjoy the same freedom of movement as everyone else.”

Anyone interested in volunteering or fundraising for Guide Dogs should contact Valerie Jobes on 01189 838756 or by emailing valerie.jobes@guidedogs.org.uk Please mention The Stafford Local when responding to adverts
