From Ray’s Desk….. 3 Basic Beliefs Belief: be·lief (bə lēf', bē-) noun 1. conviction of the truth of some statement or the reality of some being or phenomenon especially when based on examination of evidence. 2. a state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing. 1. Respect for the Individual Never take those around you for granted. Never. As Servant Leaders, we value the thoughts and opinions of others. Encourage those around you to express and share their ideas. It’s the most basic way to show respect. 2. Service to our Customers Our customers are the reason we are in business. Let’s treat them that way. By giving superior service at every opportunity, we exceed their expectations. When we exceed their expectations, we are at our best. 3. Strive for Excellence - Never settling for less than excellence shows the passion we have for our business, for our customers, and for our communities. Always ask, “Is this the best I can do?” How do we display our Three Basic Beliefs? In our actions each and every day. -Ray Korsch, Store Manager

SpotSpot-Light Manager Before Walmart, Al worked for 7 years at Best Buy managing most departments in the store. While there, he was told by a vendor about a new Walmart opening on SR 64. Al was hired at that new Walmart, and started off in the Electronics Department. He entered the Assistant Manager Training Program, and was transferred to our store. Al has been married for 9 years, has a son, and two daughters. He has a BA in Computer Science. In his spare time he likes to do wood working, and is happy to announce that he has finally completed building his new house! Al’s future goals with Walmart are to become a Co-Manager within a yearand then take it from there.
It’s been a long struggle- but Store 1171 (University Parkway and Lockwood Ridge) is finally going to become a Supercenter! The store was originally going to build a new Supercenter location on the corner of University Parkway and Honore Avenue in 2004, but didn’t get approval from the Manatee County Planning Commission. The 20 year old store then decided that if they couldn’t move- they would simply expand on it’s current location. Starting next January, construction will begin on expanding the existing Division 1 store into a Supercenter. Walmart bought several neighboring stores- these stores will be demolished to make way for the expansion. Construction will take about a year- with the Grand Opening in Spring 2010. *****************************

FUN FACT: It is estimated that over 110 billion humans have inhabited our planet since the beginning of humanity. There are currently around 6.68 billion humans alive today, compared to only about 5,000 humans in the Late Pleistocene Era (about 17,000 years ago).
New Box Cutters
The Great Lunch Heist The title might sound amusing- but this is no laughing matter. Many of our associates bring food from home to eat on their lunch break. Someone feels that this food is a “free for all” and has been taking associate’s lunches. This is an ongoing issue that needs to stop! It is really frustrating to the associates that are the victims. If the food in the refrigerator is not yours- do not eat it! Stealing is stealing. If you are caught taking another associate’s lunch- it will constitute grounds for dismissal. Don’t put yourself in this position. -Ray Korsch, Store Manager *****************************
Way to go Red! Please help us thank Red (Maintenance Associate). He has collected over $1,000 for Children’s Miracle Network by recycling our fixtures and steel. Associates think twice before throwing away heavy metals, it might be easy money for us to contribute to charity. -Ray Korsch, Store Manager

A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys in the Meat Department, but couldn't find one big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy, “Do these turkeys get any bigger?” The stock boy replied, “No ma’am, they're dead.”

Then & Now The Remodel - One Year Later One year ago this month our store remodel began. We dug deep into our store’s photo archives to find some pictures of the store before all the remodeling began. In the next few issues we will put a few “before and after” photos from different areas around the store.

Shannon’s first job was working as a server at Summer Field Nursing Home. She then got a job working at the McDonald’s in our store. While working for McDonald’s, she got to know a lot of the associates, plus the in’s and out’s of Walmart. Shannon has enjoyed Walmart ever since she was a little kid and decided that she would like to work for us. Shannon’s been with Walmart for almost three years and has worked in HBA, GM Receiving, and currently the Deli Department. She would like to thank the entire management team for guiding her in the right direction during her early days at Walmart. In her off time she likes spend time with her mother, who recently underwent major brain surgery.
FUN FACT: Contrary to popular belief- opossums are not rodents. They are actually North America’s only native marsupials. They are in the same genetic family as their much cuter Australian cousins the sugar gliders, wombats and koala bears. Opossums are also the only mammals that are immune to and do not carry the Rabies virus- something scientist are trying to figure out why.
Associate Parking Policy Walmart provides associates parking as close to the facility as space will allow. However, we reserve parking closest to our store’s entrance for our customers. We provided accessible parking for people with disabilities. An associate may park in a disabled parking spot only if they have a valid permit issued by the state Department of Motor Vehicles. If you are concerned about your safety for any reason, you may ask your manager to provide an escort to and from your car. ***************************** Incentive Program for Cashiers Our Mislabel Program now awards a candy bar for every associate that turns one in. To be fair to cashiers that don’t have an opportunity to participate in this program- we started an incentive program for them as well. For every price error reported to management that results in recovery of profit the cashier will receive a candy bar as well. Please note that these two incentive programs can be discontinued at anytime by Home Office or the Store Manager. -Tracy D, AP Coordinator
Easy Day Retail Stores
Total Stores as of July 2008
You may have been hearing in the news lately that Walmart has opened stores in India. This is only partly true- Bharti Enterprises and Walmart have signed an agreement to establish “Bharti Walmart Private Limited”, a joint venture for wholesale cash-andcarry and backend supply chain management operations in India.
What does all this mean? Basically Bharti Retail entered into a franchise agreement with Walmart. Walmart is going to help set up stores in India. Walmart will set up the supply chain, logistics, and provide technical support to the Easy Day Retail locations. Walmart will not own these stores, but will get paid a percentage of their profits. India does not allow foreign companies to own retail stores in their country. Bharti will own and manage the retail stores under the “Easy Day” name.
