Winter Getaways

Three PNW Destinations to Visit This Winter

As the Pacific Northwest transforms into a winter paradise, several enchanting destinations stand out, each with its unique history, natural beauty, and cultural charm. Here are three must-visit spots to explore during the winter season.

Joseph, Oregon: A Historic Winter Hideaway

Tucked away in northeastern Oregon, the town of Joseph is a hidden gem for winter enthusiasts. Named in 1879 after Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce people, this town is steeped in history and natural beauty. Originally known as Silver Lake and Lake City, Joseph was formally named to honor the legendary chief who fought to protect his people’s ancestral homeland

The town is nestled at the base of the Wallowa Mountains, earning it the nickname “Little Switzerland of America” due to its striking alpine scenery. The nearby Eagle Cap Wilderness, part of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, offers snowshoeing and cross-country skiing opportunities through its 565-square-mile area, featuring alpine lakes and thirty-one peaks higher than 8,000 feet

Joseph’s history is deeply intertwined with the Nez Perce people. The town’s Main Street is adorned with over a dozen bronze statues, including a larger-than-life bronze of Chief Joseph, which serves as a testament to the community’s contemporary acceptance of its Native American heritage. The Josephy Center for Arts and Culture and the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center provide insights into the

local culture and history, including the story of the Nez Perce War and the desegregated timber town of Maxville

For a cozy stay, consider the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast, a charming Victorian-style home with warm fireplaces. After a day of exploring, warm up at Embers Brewhouse, where you can enjoy craft beers and delicious pub fare, such as the Wallowa Wings.

Winthrop, Washington: A Rustic Winter Retreat

Located in the Methow Valley of central Washington, Winthrop is a charming winter retreat that offers a blend of rustic charm and outdoor adventure. This small town, with its Old West architecture and snow-covered streets, is the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

Winthrop’s history dates back to the late 19th century when it was a mining and ranching community. The town’s transformation into a tourist destination began in the 1970s, when it adopted an Old West theme, complete with wooden sidewalks and period-specific buildings.

For winter enthusiasts, the Methow Valley offers some of the best cross-country skiing in the country, with over 120 miles of groomed trails. The nearby North Cascades National Park provides opportunities for snowshoeing and exploring the pristine winter landscapes of the North Cascades.

Stay at the Sun Mountain Lodge, which offers luxurious accommodations and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. For dinner, head to the Duck Brand Cantina, where you can enjoy hearty Mexican cuisine and local craft beers by the fireplace.

Winthrop’s annual Winter Carnival, held in February, features ice sculpting, sled dog demonstrations, and a festive atmosphere that celebrates the beauty of winter in the Methow Valley.

Leavenworth, Washington: A Bavarian Winter Wonderland

Nestled in the Cascade Mountains, the town of Leavenworth is a Bavarian-themed winter wonderland. This small town, once a struggling logging community, transformed itself in the 1960s into a charming Bavarian village, complete with traditional architecture, festive lights, and cultural events.

Leavenworth’s winter landscape is nothing short of magical. The town’s famous Christmas lighting ceremony, though concluded by winter, leaves the streets and buildings aglow with thousands of twinkling lights. The surrounding mountains offer excellent skiing and snowshoeing opportunities, with the Stevens Pass Mountain Resort just a short drive away.

For a unique experience, stay at the Posthotel, an adults-only wellness retreat. The Posthotel features an outdoor heated pool where you can soak in warm waters while snowflakes gently fall around you.

In the evenings, enjoy authentic German cuisine at Andreas Keller Restaurant. Their Jägerschnitzel and locally brewed beers are a perfect match for the cozy atmosphere.

Leavenworth’s annual festivals, such as the Alpenfest in September, reflect its Swiss-Bavarian heritage. Complete with yodeling, alphorn playing, and traditional German music, these events bring the town’s cultural charm to life.

This blend of culture and natural beauty makes Leavenworth a must-visit winter destination.

Each of these destinations offers a unique and enchanting winter experience, showcasing the natural beauty, rich history, and cultural charm of the Pacific Northwest. Whether you’re skiing down snow-covered slopes, exploring frozen landscapes, or cozying up in a rustic lodge, these winter wonderlands have something for everyone.

Merry Spritzmas!

As we walked down the baking aisle of Fred Meyer in the early 1980s, I watched as my mother filled our shopping cart with items from her long grocery list. Not quite big enough to help push the cart, I peered inside to find specific items such as flour, sugar, the “good” butter, powdered sugar, and sprinkles.

I have fond memories of my mother baking throughout my childhood. Thinking back now, I wonder how she managed it all as a full-time elementary school teacher raising two kids with busy schedules. With her “here-and-there” baking, the only time we had cookies around the house was during the Christmas season.

One cookie that always made its yearly appearance was the Spritz cookie. That shortbread-style cookie, formed using a cookie press fitted with different shaped dye disks, must have delighted me because I was so excited every year!

I wasn’t tall enough to stand at the counter to help Mom make cookies, so Dad brought in a step stool from his wood shop so I could become a proper working baker. Climbing onto the stool, I felt the warmth of the oven on my face and heard Christmas music playing in the background. Mom and I had matching Christmas aprons that she had sewn for us. I was going to be the baker this year!

That Christmas, Mom let me turn the mixer on and add the ingredients. I soon learned the importance of scraping down the mixer bowl and keeping the flour inside the bowl. (It’s key to have a patient mother!)

Spritz cookies were fascinating to me. Like magic, they formed perfectly. I lined up every Spritz disk we owned, starting with my favorites and setting aside disks that didn’t suit MY debut Christmas cookies. The snowflake, the tree, and the little snowman were my top picks!

The cookie press was not as easy to use as Mom made it look. Today, there are fancy electric and auto-sensing cookie presses, but I learned on a good old-fashioned metal pull trigger. My small hands could barely pull the trigger to push dough through my carefully selected disks.

Mom encouraged me: “Practice makes perfect. If you mess one up, just scoop it up and try again.” Practice it took.

When the cookies were baked, Mom and I added a drizzle of glaze and a shake of sprinkles. I couldn’t make it past the first cookie without sampling one. After all, you can’t frost them all if they don’t taste good!

Not too sweet. Perfect design on top. Crisp and buttery. I was a successful baker.

My mother still makes Spritz cookies every Christmas. Yes, I do own an electric Spritz gun, but I’ve adopted my own family cookie traditions with my kids that, unfortunately, don’t include Spritz.

To this day, when I think back to that first time making Spritz cookies with my mom, I realize the best parts of the memory had nothing to do with making cookies.

Even if my kids don’t like to make Spritz, it’s not really about the cookies anyway.

The ART of LETTING GO

Emotional Renewal through Release

The definition of unhappiness is the inability to accept the way things are. Often, this inability stems from holding onto negativity—whether it’s past failures, grudges, or unrealistic expectations. If you find yourself stuck in negative thought patterns, it’s worth asking:

- Do you catastrophize?

- Are you holding onto negativity in your life that you refuse to let go of?

- Do you struggle to accept your daily reality?

- Do you constantly relive past failures?

- Do you hold grudges?

If the answer to any of these questions is “yes,” you may be carrying emotional baggage that weighs you down. This baggage can prevent you from experiencing profound positive changes, fostering happiness, and improving your mental health.

The key to releasing this weight lies in the practice of letting go. However, for many, the idea of “letting go” may feel like a loss of control—something we often fear. Sometimes, we even cling to negativity because it feels familiar, mistaking it for a kind of comfort. Letting go may seem like dismissing your pain, ignoring your feelings, or simply “sucking it up,” but in reality, it’s about creating space for renewal and transformation.

Letting go is essential for emotional renewal. It requires introspection, reframing, self-talk, and seeing the bigger picture in your life. These practices can help you release thoughts

and behaviors that no longer serve you, creating room for positive experiences and emotions to flourish.

How to Start Letting Go

If therapy doesn’t feel like the right fit for you, there are practical steps you can take to work on letting go yourself.

1. Recognize and Redirect Negative Thinking

If you tend to dwell on negativity, develop strategies to divert your thoughts. Start by noticing when negative thinking occurs and asking yourself:

- “Why am I thinking these thoughts?”

- “What is the positive spin I can put on this?”

Even small actions can help. Nobel Prize-winning behavioral psychologist Daniel Kahneman found that the simple physical act of smiling can trigger a physiological response that increases dopamine, elevating your happiness. Start small—smile more.

2. Write It Out

If you’re not ready to talk about your feelings, try writing them down. Draft a private letter or story to process your emotions. Focus on the facts and how you felt both then and now. Be open and vulnerable, aiming to gain clarity about difficult or painful experiences.

- Acknowledge your feelings.

- Explore what acceptance might look like.

- Shift your focus toward releasing negativity and embracing positivity.

3. Reframe Your Perspective

Reframing helps you view experiences in a new light. If someone has let you down, for example, consider their limitations and whether your expectations were realistic. Instead of attributing negative motives to their actions, recognize their behavior as a reflection of their capabilities, not your worth.

4. Change How You Respond

While you can’t change the behavior of others, you *can* change how you react. Negative behaviors often follow predictable patterns. Break the cycle by tweaking your responses.

“The simple physical act of smiling can trigger a physiological response that increases dopamine, elevating your happiness. Start small— smile more.”

- Instead of reacting the same way, try something different to shift the dynamic.

- Aim for outcomes that leave you feeling more in control and at peace.

Be Kind to Yourself

Letting go doesn’t mean erasing the past; it means releasing its grip on your present. Life isn’t all rainbows and unicorns—it’s a series of lived experiences that take us through a wide range of emotions. We don’t always get it right, but prioritizing emotional health allows us to embrace renewal through release.

By letting go, you open the door to living your best life.

Marcia Falsarella

I started attending watercolor painting workshops about 12 years ago. Most were led by Sally Baker, who is a prominent watercolorist in Northern California. My style is referred to as “sharpfocus” which results in crisp detailed images. Think of it as taking a close-up photo. I really enjoy focusing on color and shadows. When I paint, I feel a sense of excitement, challenge, and peace. I find painting is something I can do when my body ailments prevent me from doing something more physical. I love buying paints, and some call me a color junkie. Lacking in drawing skills, I rely on taking photos of what I want to paint. It helps guide me in painting.

When Covid restrictions made homebodies of us all, I found myself doing paintings of what I saw in our surroundings, such as Meyer lemons, garden vegetables, and flowers. Other compositions were based on cherished photos that always brough back wonderful memories: the snowy woods of my childhood and a favorite Venetian dining spot inches from the water. But now, I can’t wait to paint the amazing Vancouver skies and Columbia River.

Marcia Falsarella will be teaching an Intro to Watercolor Class in Ink Spot on Monday, December 30th. Sign-up on the TSL App or with the Concierge.

Understanding Balance and Stability: What’s the Difference?

Balance refers to the ability to maintain your body’s position, whether still or in motion, without falling. Stability, on the other hand, is the control of movement or position, especially during dynamic or multi-directional activities.

Strong balance and stability are essential for preventing injuries, as they improve your control over body movements and help reduce the risk of falls. They also enhance physical performance, allowing you to perform complex movements with greater ease and precision—whether you’re an athlete or simply staying active. Additionally, many balance exercises engage core muscles, leading to a stronger midsection, better posture, and overall improved functionality in daily activities.

Getting Started: Exercises to Improve Balance

and Stability

1. Single-Leg Stands:

Start by standing on one leg, holding the position for 20-30 seconds. To make it more challenging, try closing your eyes or standing on a soft surface. This exercise strengthens the muscles around your ankle, knee, and hip, which are key to maintaining balance.

2. Balance Board or Bosu Ball:

Use a balance board or a Bosu ball to add an unstable surface to your exercises. This equipment challenges your body to stabilize itself, improving your balance and engaging your core.

3. Planks with Leg Lifts:

Begin in a standard plank position. Lift one leg off the ground, hold for a few seconds, then switch legs. This exercise targets your core, shoulders, and hips, enhancing your stability and balance.

4. Lunges with a Twist:

Perform a standard forward lunge, then twist your torso towards your front leg as you lunge. This movement challenges your balance while also working your core and lower body.

5. Yoga Poses:

Incorporate yoga poses such as Tree Pose, Warrior III, or Half Moon Pose into your routine. These poses require you to maintain balance while engaging your entire body, promoting stability and flexibility.
