Former SEHS Baseball Star Hopes to Return to Fenway and Boston Red Sox By Stephen Prudhomme It wasn’t that long ago Josh Reddick was playing baseball for South Effingham High School, boasting excellent speed and a great arm in the outfield and a potent bat as a left-handed hitter. Reddick still possess those skills, only now they’re more developed, and taken them beyond Guyton and all the way to Boston, where he played for the Red Sox for 27 games this past season and, eventually, hopes to become a permanent fixture in the outfield. Two days before Thanksgiving, Reddick joined former South Effingham players Cody May and Stephen Vaughan as instructors at a youth baseball clinic in Richmond Hill. May plays third base for the University of Georgia, while Vaughan is a first baseman/third baseman for Southwest Georgia College. Reddick, who will remain home until February, when he reports to spring training, gladly hit the diamond for the daylong clinic. “I enjoy passing on what I know,” says the 22-year-old Reddick. “It’s just as much fun for me as for the kids.” Reddick had plenty of fun this

past season. In August, he was called up from Boston’s AA team. His first home run came in an 18-10 win over the Baltimore Orioles. He finished his major league stint with two home runs, 10 hits, four RBIs and a .169 batting average. Reddick says his time in Boston was everything he dreamed of and more. “It’s beyond what you think,” says Reddick, who played at Middle Georgia College before being drafted by the Red Sox in 2006. “You prepare every day and have your every whim catered to. I got chills the first time I walked out on the field.” The player who made the biggest impression on Reddick was Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia. “He’s a crackup guy,” Reddick says. “He’s great in the clubhouse. But he plays hard every day. He works his tail off.” Reddick is headed to spring training to try and win a position with the Boston club. He says he’s not intimidated by the competition and is good enough to compete at the major league level. The scouting report on seemingly backs up that claim, referring to Reddick as a “naturally gifted athlete with a sweet uppercut swing”

Josh Reddick, who played 27 games for the Bosston Red Sox this past season, shared his expertise with youngsters at a daylong clinic in Richmond Hill last month.

who has above average range in the field to go along with excellent arm strength and outstanding accuracy. The report further states that he has great hustle, reads the ball well coming off the walls (a definite plus with the Green Monster at Fenway Park) and can play all three outfield positions. If Reddick adds strength to his wiry frame, the report notes, there’s not much limit to

his power potential. Nothing would please Reddick more than to earn a spot on the Boston roster and remain in Beantown for years to come. “It’s always been my dream to play major league baseball,” Reddick says. “I’d like to play for 17 or 18 years. I love the game. I’m so happy when I’m playing baseball.”

• A Deputy responded to a local pawn shop where a man was attempting to pawn a 20 guage shotgun. Problem was that the man was a convicted felon. He arrested the man and took him to jail, pulled a criminal history report and showed the man his previous felony conviction. “That makes you a convicted felon,” the Deputy explained. “But that was a long time ago, that’s all been taken care of,” the man tried to explain. The Deputy actually had to explain to the guy that once you’ve been convicted of a felony, you’re a convicted felon. It don’t go away. • Our Effingham Unruly Juvenile this week was found standing in front of a closed convenience store at 11:30pm, apparently trying to pick the lock to the front door. The Deputy spotted him and pulled into the parking lot with his bright lights spotlighting the boy. The Deputy got out and walked up to him, grabbing the boy’s machete type knife. The boy was completely uncooperative, refusing to give the Deputy his name, phone number or address. He finally agreed to show the Deputy where he lived, and let the Deputy drive him around the neighborhood for awhile, ending up on a dead end street. He tried convincing the Deputy that he had to walk through the ___________________________________ Continued on page B6

By C. Edward Wilson How bout them Raiders As the Savannah Christian football team readied themselves to practice for their upcoming game against Darlington High from Rome last week in the privacy of the Pooler Sports Complex football facility, a quiet calm arrived when Head Football Coach Donald Chumley pulled up in his truck. “Eleven through 15,” was the first audible message emitting out of his mouth. When asked to explain what that meant, he said in his surly voice, “I told my team that our real season started from games 11 to 15, “ said Chumley. “We have a tough game with Darlington this weekend and they are probably the best team we have faced all season.” The numerical reference was the playoff schedule facing SCPS after finishing the season undefeated at 10-0 and in the Georgia High School Association’s Coaches Poll, the Red Raiders finished with a No. 2 ranking in Class-A. Senior running back and Finnochairo Award winner Chris Barnwell didn’t mind taking the trip to Darlington in Game No. 14. “We’ll

be driving by the Georgia Dome and it will give us a chance to see what it looks like, while we’re traveling,” said Barnwell. The Raiders are the first team in Chatham County to get this far in the state playoffs in several decades. The SCPS sports program has captured state titles in baseball, tennis, golf, soccer, volleyball and cross country, but this is the first time where a major sports team has captured the attention of an entire community. (Editor’s Note: Outdoor Truths is a weekly sportsman’s article that appears in newspapers and regional magazines across 13 states in the South, and Midwest. It is a blend of observations and experiences that have come over time from being in God’s great outdoors. We’re proud to offer this column for the outdoor sportsmen in our area.) Some of my most memorable winter outdoor experiences come from the lake. As a young adult I spent more time fishing than hunting. And as I have mentioned before, there was no boat, just hip boots. It was cold, only if the fish were not biting. Those days were about persevering; persevering through the weather and through the lull of inactivity until the fish decided to feed. The gulls always gave away where the fish were hiding and if they began to fly above a certain area, you knew the minnows were being pushed to the top by feeding fish that were below them. That would be the best time and place to cast your bait. There were many days we caught more than our share and a few that we came home emptyhanded. The days when the gulls never flew, only gave us hope for the next day if we could just persevere. When I think of persevering, I think of emotionless persistence. I think of someone who keeps going through all kinds of circumstances because he or she knows the preferred outcome is at the end of the way. He does not keep going because he feels like it, or because the conditions are always favor-

First off, congratulations to my friends Dawn and Mark, who both completed the Savannah River Bridge Run this past weekend... The college football season for Division I teams is over, with the conference championships wrapped up this weekend. And, seriously, wasn’t it awesome (and laughable) to see the baby in Tebow come out? His teammates should’ve been slapping him in the head and telling him to act like a man. And how about the Jackets? They never fail to make it nervewracking. Anyway, with the “season” over, it’s time to go bowling. Here are the match ups for the “post season”: New Mexico (You really should’ve taken that left at Albuquerque) Bowl: (Albuquerque; 12/19; 4:30PM; ESPN): Fresno State vs. Wyoming St. Petersburg (Area residents under 80 get in free) Bowl: (12/19; 8:00PM; ESPN): Rutgers vs. UCF New Orleans (Hey, we’re not all alcoholics, we just that way) Bowl: (12/20; 8:30PM; ESPN) Southern

able, but because he knows that he is on the right path and the reward is worth his resolute effort. What he does not know however, is the time it may take for his perseverance to turn into his prize. Some of you have been persevering for a long time. You have been chasing a goal or dream that you are sure is just around the corner. Right now, however, you are doubting that it will ever be realized. You are tired from the work and the wait. You perhaps look at your advancing age or even those times in the past that you have failed. All of these push back against your perseverance. What do you do? First of all, check the source of your dream. Make sure that it is lined up with God’s purpose for your life. God is the designer of dreams. He has made you to be fulfilled in life, but sometimes our dreams must be gently put back on His course. Secondly, check your motives. Why do you want to accomplish your goal? Is it for selfish reasons or purposes? Is it for your own edification? The right motive is…. so that others may see God through your accomplishments and so that you may be able to spread the good news of God.

Lastly, realize that many times the greater the purpose, the longer the preparation. season. This year we have added an Inn Tour on Sunday, December 13”, said Marti Bockhold, Tour cochairman. Two home tours are offered on Saturday, December 12. Each feature a different set of homes. The afternoon tour will take place from 11am-3pm and the evening tour will take place from 5pm-8pm. Tickets are $30 per person per tour. A self-guided walking tour, participants visit each home at their own pace and select their own starting and ending point. Proceeds generated from the tour are given back to the community in the form of grants to help maintain and enhance the historic district and to work in partnership with organizations that impact the community through education, safety, music, and children’s activities. We couldn’t put on such a fabulous tour without the generosity of the homeowners, volunteers, advertisers and sponsors, said Bockhold. A “replicar,” as you might guess, is a new or late-model vehicle designed to resemble an antique, classic or collector car. The truest replicars are those that so closely resemble the originals that they actually can be mistaken for them. Other replicars may take liberties with the original design and substitute many new or nonmatching parts. And some may simply have a generic “look” of an old car but not resemble any original in particular. In the case of today’s “Morgan” three-wheeler, it was built to bear a close resemblance to the original. Judges and Morgan fans at the August 2009 Pebble Beach Concours classic and antique automobile show considered this replicar a worthy imitation. For many years, Morgan was known for its sporty little “tricycle” three-wheeled cars, which were continued even until 1950. Meanwhile, four-wheeled Morgans of more conventional design were available since the mid-1930s. One big problem with the three-wheelers of yore was that the engine was out in the open, at the very front of the car, which meant it could be destroyed even by hitting a post or another car at a low speed. There should have been, at least, a front bumper. In recent years, Morgan has been one of the very few specialty cars still using wood for body

Dear Tom and Ray: So, should you tip your mechanic? Would it be insulting? Would it be appreciated? How do you know how much you should tip if, indeed, you should tip at all? I ask because recently I went to a mechanic I found in The Mechanics Files on your Web site ( I had two problems. No. 1: I had a nail in my tire (turns out it had not created a leak, but they spent some time searching to be sure). No. 2: My engine was dying at awkward times, and they discovered that a little hose that connects the vacuum sensor had a tear, and replaced it. They didn’t charge me a penny! When he told me this over the phone, I was astonished. They get paid a lot for their time, and they could have spent that time earning money by fixing someone else’s car. I decided to insist they take some money. But when I got there, it occurred to me that it might seem ungrateful of me, or insulting, so I chickened out and thanked them too many times and left. The next day I brought them a homemade chocolate cake, and thanked them again. But I wonder if I’m ignorant of some code or courtesy that would make a tip appropriate. Please advise! -- Kyleleen

framework. The majority of cars abandoned that practice by the mid-1930s. Chris Booth well deserved the compliments he received for his interesting Morgan replicar! *** Tad Burness welcomes mail from

TOM: What you did was perfect, Kyleleen. A mechanic might be uncomfortable accepting a cash gratuity, but no one will ever turn down chocolate cake! RAY: Wait, Kyleleen. How do you know these guys aren’t just lulling you into a false sense of security? And setting you up for a $4,000 transmission rebuild next month? That’s what I would do! TOM: That’s why no one brings you cake, you knucklehead. Mechanics and tradespeople usually

are not tipped, like waiters or taxi drivers are. This is especially true in smaller, independent shops, where the mechanic may also be the owner.

RAY: But that doesn’t mean you can’t express your gratitude. The best ways to do that are by (1) giving a sincere compliment, (2) becoming a regular customer and (3) recommending him to your friends.

TOM: An honest “thank you” and an expression of appreciation means a lot to a mechanic. Think about all the complaints we get, most of the time. We encounter a lot of suspicion and wariness from our customers -and rightfully so! But when we do a good job, it’s awfully nice to have someone smile and tell us how much they appreciate it.

RAY: Especially when it’s sincere. And remember, nothing says sincerity like baked goods! *** You want to buy a used car, but how do you find a good one? Tom and Ray can help! one other undefeated team (possibly two) besides the one who wins this one- when this game ends, though. Since the powers that be in college football are too chicken to set up a playoff system, maybe the undefeated teams could get together for a pickup game to see who‘s best. You know, like “The Bad News Bears Go To Japan”. Go ahead and laugh, but the movie’s about as authentic as a National Championship claim will be… It’s a deja-vu thing with the Falcons- good play one week, terrible the next. It’s just like the first 42 years they’ve been around. To say they played poorly Sunday is a huge understatement. I mean, did I really predict they’d make the playoffs? Well, at least I wasn’t the only one who got fooledthere were plenty of “experts” who expected the Birds to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl... What in the ^*#!??? A BCS promo that included Ohio State? You have GOT to be kidding! Other than the top seven teams’ planes disappearing into the Bermuda Triangle on their way to their respective bowl games, is there any freaking WAY a two loss team finishes

I see where Urban Meyer was taken to a Gainesville hospital early Sunday morning to be treated for dehydration. I wonder if it happened because he and Tebow cried too much? To paraphrase Tom Hanks’ Jimmy Dugan character- “there’s no crying” in football (unless a bone has been snapped into pieces. I’m pretty sure it’s okay then)... And WHY did it take FOUR losses for voters to finally figure out USC did NOT belong on the polls?

It’s hard to believe another year is almost over. There’s only one big project left for most of us -- and that’s the holidays! Every Christmas our family puts up a big Christmas tree -- or two or three. We love the fresh-cut trees that tree farmers provide every year, and we like to support them. But how do you pick

woods and climb a couple of fences to get to his house. Instead, the Deputy just took him to the Sheriff’s Office and contacted Juvenile Justice. The case worker there was very familiar with the boy and called his Momma to come get him. (Forty something years later, my Momma’d still be beatin’ my tail!) • It’s that time of year again, time when the truancy summons are going out to the parents like the Guyton momma who now has to take off work to show up in court and explain why her child hasn’t been in school every day like he’s supposed to. • A Deputy responded to the Emergency Room at the hospital in the afternoon because a patient’s husband refused to leave the room. He was being loud and aggressive with the ER staff, but they were able to get him in the lobby when they explained he absolutely, positively could not go back with his wife for X-rays. The X-rays confirmed that the woman had fractures requiring attention. The Deputy went and spoke with the woman and her husband was now getting agitated in the lobby. The woman said she’d suffered her bruises and broken bones from a four wheeler accident. The

a “good” tree? The first thing to consider is how long it has been cut. The fresher it is, the longer it will last. Look for a tree that still has green, supple branches. If you bend a small branch gently, it shouldn’t snap off. If it does, that tree is too dry, and you should keep looking. Another sign of a fresh tree is to use your thumbnail to scratch off a little bark from the main trunk. If the tree’s tissue under the bark is still green, it’s a good sign that the tree will last through the season. If you pick up a tree and bring it down sharply to the ground and it rains needles, keep looking. This tree has gotten too dry and will continue to loose needles, and may be bare before Christmas morning. As soon as you get your tree, cut off the end of the trunk -- about an inch will do. This opens up fresh tissue that will soak up the water you supply and keep the tree from drying out too fast. Put it in water immediately, and keep the water supply fresh every day. It will drink a lot of water the first few days but will slow down after that. Use a tree preservative with the water to keep the tree fresher even longer. You can buy these at your

tree dealer, or make your own from our recipe. It’s on our Web site at It’s a great idea to place your tree and stand on top of a large trash bag. This protects your floor from sloshed tree water, and when it’s time to take the tree down, you can just place it in or on this bag and drag it outside without making too much of a mess. Keep your tree away from heat registers so it won’t dry it out too quickly. And never leave the lights on when you are not around. The Super Handyman and Super HandyMom want to wish you and yours a very special, super holiday! *** Q: We don’t get much sun on the north side of the house, and I have some mold growing on the roof. How can I get it off without ruining the composition shingles? -- W.A. A: Try spraying it with laundry bleach to kill the mold first. Then hose it off with some pressure. *** Got a question or a handy tip? Send it to The Super Handyman in care of this newspaper, or visit our Web site at Those of general interest will be used in future columns.

Deputy then went and spoke with the husband and noted that he instantly became defensive as he shouted “I don’t beat my #@%* wife! I knew the cops would be showing up soon!” The Deputy tried to get the husband to explain what had happened, and he told her “The staff already knows what happened... why do I need to tell you?” As he continued with his loud, aggressive manner in the ER lobby, the Deputy finally took him into custody for disorderly conduct. (Draw your own conclusions. I’ve drawn mine.) • The pterodactyl’s are circling in Rincon again... A man told Deputies he was driving southbound on Long Bridge Road when a bird struck his windshield, causing it to crack. He just needed a report for insurance purposes. • A man who details cars for a living told Deputies he could have gotten the counterfeit $50 bill he tried to use at a convenience store “from anybody!” Alas, he was the last one holding it when it was seized for the Treasury Department, so he’s either out $50, or knows he’s got some work left to do on the funny money. • Just before 1am, Deputies found a woman in a convenience store parking lot off Hwy 17 with her Dodge Dakota having problems with a busted radiator, caused when she struck a deer on the highway. “I was just trying to make it home,” she explained. • Just before 2am, Deputies stopped a red Acura for having a headlight out while driving on Blue Jay Road. They asked the

man for his license, and he explained that he has a Mexican license that he’d left at home. A check with dispatch revealed that he also had a Georgia license, which is suspended for DUI. He was taken to jail. • Around 3:30am, a Deputy found a silver Dodge Ram pickup in the ditch off Hodgeville Road. He stopped and asked the man what happened, and the man said he’d swerved to avoid running over an armadillo. Give him points for originality, cause he’s losing points on his driving record for a DUI! (The funny thing is that, at some point, that had to sound like a pretty good story to him to tell the next Deputy who drove by!) • Around 4:30am, a Deputy found a black Nissan Altima with a Florida license plate on the side of Hwy 80. The Nissan had extensive damage to the front end and was leaking oil. It was obvious that the car had been in some type of accident, so the Deputy began searching for where the accident had happened. He didn’t take too long to realize the crosswalk light poles were knocked over at the intersection of Hwy 80 and Hwy 17. he car was towed to be held for the owner to face charges of damage to public property. • Flim flam artists are now sending emails with official looking letterheads, as though the email is really from the FBI, and the FBI is really threatening to lock you up if you don’t send them $2,500 so they can send you your $1.5 million winnings. Unbelieveable!
