Thursday, December 4 - December 10, 2008

Hope everyone had a safe Thanksgiving. Julie and I did our usual cook for the masses dinner, but I was slack and bailed out on her around 9:30- evidently long before all the guests got here. And long before they left, which was around 5. In the AM. Probably for the best that I took Shelby home and decided to crash there, ‘cuz I just can’t stay up that late anymore. Heck, my days have already started by 5. I would’ve been an even grumpier Gus than normal trying to sleep through that sort of foolishness. Of course, being the party pooper that I am, I probably would’ve- uh- “convinced” people to leave. And probably punched in the forehead whoever it was showed up at 2 AM…

that) and, wow- to hear the guy on the air, it was all poor play calling, the refs calling too many penalties, etc. that lost the gamenot the fact that Tech flat out ran over them (literally).

One guy even mentioned how, back when he played, the players all lived in a dorm together, and were supervised by coaches constantly, and how this lack of discipline was another contributing factor to the loss. I won’t disagree that there has been a stunning lack of discipline at the school (how many arrests this year?), a trend that’s grown worse since Richt took the reins. I don’t agree, however, that the players need to be in athletic dorms or under constant supervision to keep the them in lone. They’re SUPPOSED to be young adults. Many of them are going to college FOR FREE. What the disciplinary problem

kids need is a boot to their backsides. Oh yeah- and they all (coaches, fans, and players alike) need to admit they got whipped. I’m reading on AJC message boards all the smack talk from UGA fans and just laughing. I mean, it’s like they either weren’t watching the game, or are stuck in some time warp where last Saturday hasn’t happened yet, still proclaiming their team’s supposed superiority over the “North Avenue Trade School.” Funny stuff…

Okay, so Alabama and Florida match up this weekend for the SEC title. The winner, more than likely, ends up in the supposed

national championship game. Unless the winner is Florida and Oklahoma beats Missouri- a very likely scenario. Will ‘Bama’s defense be able to do something only one other team has been able to do and stop the Florida offense. All year long, I’ve figured that an SEC team would end up in the “championship” game, but I just might be wrong (I don’t see Missouri beating Oklahoma). Either way, it won’t change my opinion that there needs to be a playoff. I’ll say it every year until we get one. I may be making the case for quite some time…

Even worse, most of the turkey got eaten. Sigh… How ‘bout them- Jackets? As Julie and I settled into our respective couches and watched the game Saturday, she asked if we were rooting for “the nerds.” I affirmed and we enjoyed ourselves- once the second half started. After the first thirty minutes, I would’ve sworn UGA was well on it’s way to an eighth straight win in the series. Tech’s offense was having some trouble getting going, and the Dawgs weren’t. I should’ve had more faith. After all, I’d spent the last two weeks telling the guys I work with that Tech would win, that there was no way the Bulldogs’ defense would be able to bottle up the Tech rushing game, and trying to get one of my coworkers to place a wager on the game. Anyway, both teams will now wait for the bowls to come aknocking. Both should be playing on New Year’s Day. And, thankfully, Tech fans can go to a bowl people might actually pay attention to… Funny that many UGA fans are considering the season a failure now, even with the team looking at the possibility of a 10 win season. Remember when that was a successful year? I got in the car Sunday afternoon to head to Shelby’s and WSB was running the Mark Richt show (or something like

Out of the gates fast The Groves biy’s basketball team opened the season as one of the premiere teams in the area and after the first two games against quality opponents, those pre-season predictions seem to be right on target. The Rebels defeated Statesboro, 74-57 and then turned around and pummelled Brunwick four days later, 71-46. Those two wins were not only victories, but the point separation raised eyes all the way to Atlanta as the Rebels got into the Georgia High School Association’s Top Twenty-five poll. The only team ranked in

the Top Ten Classs-AAAAA poll is Savannah High. The Blue Jackets got the vote from tradition, but still will be one of the toughest teams in the area. Another t eam raising eyebrows is Richmond Hill. Once a perennial power in the days of Kevin Clark and company, have finally gotten some of that lost “swagger” back. The Wildcats have knocked off four straight opponent s with the closest game being a 69-68 win over Wayne County. Other early season teams finding themselves on the losing end were: Byan County, 6244; Effingham County, 66-49; and Calvary Day School, 81-56. Over on the girl’s side ... ball team seems to have ironed out the kinks of having a new coach yelling, whistling and screaming at them. Karl Demasi took over the reigns of the team from Nate Hayes and so far his team is steadily getting more focused. In the Lady Rebels most recent game against Jenkins High on last Friday night on the road. Effingham defeated Jenkins in a tight contest in front of a hostile crowd. DeMasi was pleased with his team’s progress thus far. “The girl’s are still learing to adjust to me, but are a good bunch of kids.” said DeMasi, in a post-game interview. “We’ve got some tough games coming up, but these girls will surprise some teams.” The Rebels will find out quickly this week about just how good they are and can be, when Effingham travels over to Waters and Paulsen in Savannah to take on Class-A state champion Calvary Baptist Day School. Head Coach Jackie Hamilton of Calvary brings back a strong contingency of players and having won the GHSA crown last year, only fuels his teams efforts to taste a little bit more of last year’s feast.

Captain Alan Collins Loves Winter Fishing! It’s true Captain Alan loves wintertime fishing! He has his reasons and here are just a few of the most important ones. “No crowds, No bugs, and great opportunity for BIG fish!” I think that pretty much covers what wintertime fishing means to Captain Alan! Let talk a bit about red fish…. This is one fish that is considered a “grazing type!” During the cold months the red fish’s primary goal is to advance as quickly as possible to the safety of the marsh. So therefore as soon as there is enough water to “make way” they are going to take it. They are heading for safe feeding grounds away from the porpoises. During this time the red fish’s favorite food is anything that comes wrapped in a shell. They also want to

avoid being eaten by those that stalk them during this time. The flooded marshes offer food wrapped in a shell as well great “feel good protection!” My father used to say, “as a red fish grows the number of spots showing up on the tail is determined by how many times the red fish as been scared to death by the porpoises!” I always scratched my head on with that bit of information. However, once he explained his reasoning I started to come around to agreeing. According to daddy the spots on the tail are to lure the porpoises away from the fish’s head. When they attack the tail section, which is the smallest part of the fish, darting quickly away is the first thing that they do. The more they are put in these “almost devoured situations the more spots appear!” So therefore these markings could be called “I have been scared to death this many times spots!” Any fish under pressure is going to be nervous and eating just might not be too much on their mind. However, if you track these fish you know where they feel the safest when feeding. Porpoises can’t get in the grass at least when it’s real shallow. So therefore once the red fish advances to the safety of the marsh “the feeding process begins!” Captain Alan studies these fish especially during this time and knows exactly what to look for. The best way to describe is “tails up heads down!” When a red fish is seen doing this they are definitely feeding and not too much afraid of being eaten by the big bad wolf! With all this being said, Captain Alan takes to the mud flats in search of “tail up heads down” feeding situations. He has a rule of thumb, which he especially fish’s by when it’s cold. The reds school up on the flats and the trout stay in the deeper holes. According to Captain Alan scouting around “just taking a look see” is going to be the best way to find places to target red fish. Sunny, clear, calm days along with the lower tide stages taking place in the middle of the day are going to best times to look and target this fish. As I said earlier, red fish are grazers rooting for crabs, snails, oysters, and any sort of mud hiding marine creature. During these low mid day tide stages the sun warms the mud up. As soon as they are flooded enough for swimming red fish advance to these areas for some serious safe grazing. Here’s a list of possible fish days to start off with…November 23-28, 2008. You have an early out going tide putting low around mid day. Captain Alan says, “If you can’t go fishing, it’s a great time to take the family riding to do a little looking!” For those looking to go fishing to catch as well as learn about this subject it’s a great time to book a trip with Captain Alan. Offshore Artificial Reef Fishing

King Mackerel Blitz! The king mackerel are still here and they are “thick as thieves!” I love that saying, “thick as thieves!” All size kings from snakes, teenagers, and even a few “smokers” can be caught. For those that don’t know, snakes are king mackerel up to 12 pounds, teenagers are teen pounds 13 to 19 pounds, and “Smokers” are the big boys. If you have been reading my reports you already know I love trolling for these fish. My technique of pulling #3 planers and 31/2-inch Drone spoons works well, It offers my customers some serious strong pulls, and catches them lots of fish. This type of fishing is fast with customers being able to stay busy. We let them play a part in the whole ordeal of catching which is letting the lines out, setting the planers, reeling the hooked up fish in, hand lining the leader, slinging the fish in the cooler, netting or gaffing when larger fish are involved, assist in removing the hook, and etc. I think you get the picture of how busy the cockpit of the Miss Judy Too can be with this many fish hooked up at once! The bottom line to this type of fishing for the charter fisherman is that you can get as involved as much as you would like. It’s kind of up to you! This bite won’t last much longer. So therefore those that want to go now is the time! More Good News! For those that don’t want to troll there is other type of fish catching opportunities. With the “toothy monsters” (barracuda) gone going light tackle live bait for these fish is always an option. The best news is that you can fight them without the barracuda’s trying to eat them. However, I did experience some difficulty with the large kings attacking the smaller ones, but that didn’t happen every time when going into the light tackle mode. You can always tell when the attack of kings on kings is taking place. You landed fish will have skin cuts and pin holes marks. Once looking at the ravaged fish I’m not sure whether these are attack or jealous marks. Whatever the case may be there is certainly a lot of action going on down under! Light tackle fishing is a lot of fun, because you “strike the fish when it hits!” This boils down to you let it run as long as your think and then you set the hook. The best news is that first run is strong and it feels so good! Here’s a break down of my favorite king mackerel light tackle while using live bait set up. This is a traditional rod and reel combo. For the rod I am using Shakespeare Ugly Stik Custom USCB 1170M 15-30 LB. My reel of choice and always has been is the Shimano Speed master 6:1 super high speed retrieve loaded with 20 pound test monofilament line. As far as my rig used this is a

simple as it gets. I normally use a small lead hook, which also can be called “live bait or Short shank beak hook.” Some light tackle fishermen go with a short shank hook with a needle or standard eye. I use what I have. The main goal making this rig is to make sure that you first hook used; “the lead or front hook” doesn’t over power your bait. After all it has to swim in most cases to get the fish’s attention. However, I have seen the bite where it really didn’t matter, but as we fishermen know these situations don’t go down very often. I like using an extra strong “J style” 2/0 to 3/0 lead hook. This is the hook that is going to be place in the bait’s bottom lip, through the eyes, or through the nose. In some cases, if you want your bait to dive the lead/first hook needs to be placed behind the dorsal fin. This points them in the right direction. For leader I normally used 20 to 30 pound test single strand wire. I attach swivel to one end or tie a haywire twist. The haywire twist allows you tie the main line directly to the leader without the aid of a swivel. The only thing that a haywire doesn’t do that a swivel can is spin around and around. For those that are live lining will drifting this “non used swivel design” will work just find. However, if moving about is on your mind I suggest going with some sort of small in-line swivel. These work great in not allowing your leader as well as your main line twist. And the fish can’t see the swivel. So therefore you don’t drawn “a would be bite/hit” away from you bait. We have the main hook or the lead/front hook in place now you need to add the “stinger hook.” Believe it or not, but this is the hook that can seal the deal! The distance decided between the lead hook and stinger hook needs to determine by length of bait use. For instance: When using cigar minnow I suggest only have a few inches between the lead hook and stinger. However, if big baits such as pin fish, menhaden, mullet, blue runners, and their likes are being used you are going to have to lengthen that space between lead hook and stinger. (go with more than a two hook design set up) Tandem Type Rigs I guess I need to get this out of the way. If you are us_____________________________________ Continued on Page B7

ing long bait such as a “Ribbon Fish” then you need to go with a “tandem type rig,” which is where you have more than two hooks involved. Longer baits require more hook coverage or you might fishing yourself fishing with bait’s head and mid section only, meaning, “Tail is gone!” The bottom line to this suggestion is bait dictates the length and size of hooks use. Please remember small hooks and light leader have always caught big fish. The reason being big fish aren’t stupid and are very cautious. I know I needed to remind you of this ….when you catch a king mackerel while trolling with 31/2 inch spoon and sling the fish in the cooler here’s a suggestion. Make sure that you slack the leader to the fish while it flipping and flopping about. If you wait a few extra seconds the fish will flounder around enough and throw the spoon right out of its mouth. Our customers look at us a little crazy when we tell them this. However, when they see how it works I watch them making sure the leader is slack so that the king will sling the hook, which means we don’t waste time handling the fish. “No Mess here!” Now I’m not going to say, “this is happen every time, but more than not!” Plain Old Bottom Fishing During this time of the year “plain old bottom fishing” is quite popular. The reason being is that it’s the migration time of the year. Now matter where you drop that baited hook you really never know what you might catch where. The artificial reefs are great place for fishermen to fish and fish to feed. We all want the same thing. So therefore we go to areas, which offer up the best feeding opportunity. The good news is that there are all kinds of fish both large and small “bulking up” before making that serious wintertime move.

Most any kind of bait will work whether is frozen squid or part of this past summer’s fish parts. For those that don’t want to take any sort of bait all you need have on board is a good hook Sabiki bait rig. These rigs will get you what you want in the bait category. If the bait caught is too big cut it up and if it happens to be the right size “just use it whole!” Freshies Suggestions Not the Regular Run of the Mill Black Plastic Worm! I like getting suggestions from someone that fish’s all of the time. Take Captain Ray Crawley for instance. He is a full time inshore charter boat captain with Miss Judy Charters. He loves his job! Captain Ray basically eats, sleeps, and thinks about fishing all of the time. However, I might add Saturday night in his case is “date night.” So therefore not much talking or thinking about fishing takes place during this particular time frame. One day a week “not fishing or thinking fishing is certainly OK!” As we talked the other day we got on the subject of large mouth bass fishing. Since it was 31 degrees that morning I had to ask, “how would you target a large mouth bass when it’s this cold?” As usual whenever I ask Captain Ray a question about fish he goes into what we (humans) would do under the same circumstance. For instance: When it’s cold and we are outside “we don’t move too fast!” Another thing he said that made a lot of sense was “fish school deeper the colder it gets.” Then he said, “The surface of the lake freezes first.” And stuff like this, which set the stage for what he was about to share with me in regards to getting my best chance at a large mouth bass. When it’s cold Captain Ray suggest fishing deep holes, because bass will be staging and schooling together in these ar-

eas. The first thing I thought of was I wonder what kind of live bait would he would prefer to use? Well, before I could even ask that question, he said, “7 inch black plastic worm.” Now as you all know the plastic worm has been around for a while and for the best reason, because they work. The fisherman that knows how to work a worm always hooks up. The fisherman that works a worm like a swimming fish loses big time! The secret to working worm is to do so “slow to go!” After all if you think about it worms have their signature movement, which isn’t duplicated by any other down under specie. Fish got eyes, mouth, fins, pooper, and tail fins, which boil down to lots of build in moving parts to use to propel. The old worm got absolutely not a thing that moves that much. About the only thing a worm does is “wiggle to slide forward a bit.” With all this being said, “Work you worm slow, slow, and slower!” Captain Ray likes plastic worms and says, “They work great when worked properly.” However, working it properly only wasn’t all Captain Ray counted on. He “Ray-a-tized” his worms before using them. Here’s his recipe for soaking his worms. He took a zip lock bag pour in some olive oil and then a few drops “oil of anise.” This oil basically smells like liquid licorice. The olive oil gave the plastic worm a realistic shine and the anise oil offered up a scent that captures the attentions of fish. Captain Ray brought me a bottle of the stuff, which he ordered from his pharmacist. I am looking at the bottle and just wondering where all this came from. The bottom line is this, “soak you worms in oil of anise mixed with olive oil to catch more fish during cold times! Thanks For Reading! Captain Judy

They believe in themselves. Sunday, they weren’t at their best, but managed to play well enough to win- the mark of most good teams. Hard to believe that’s the Falcons playing in the Georgia Dome, isn’t it? This weekend, the birds can move a step closer to the promised land with a win in New Orleans… It occurred to me as I watched the Titans scrimmage- uh, I mean PLAY- the Lions Thursday that I’d goofed a little on my predictions last week by leaving out a couple of divisions from each conference. Here are my update predictions: - Three NFC South teams will make the playoffs. The Falcons are riding momentum right towards their own berth, while the Panthers and the Buccaneers will round out the southern trio. - Giants will still win the East,

That would be the NFC North, another division no ones seems to really want to win. Minnesota takes the title at 9-7 on the season, thanks to their better divisional record than the Bears, who‘ll probably finish 9-7 themselves. - Despite picking one of its teams to win a Wild Card spot, I forgot the AFC North, as well. The Steelers will take that title (and looked pretty darned strong against the Patriots Sunday). I haven’t changed my mind about the rest of the winners- Broncos in the West (by default, just like their NFC West counterparts), Titans win the AFC South, and Jets will win the East. Wild Cards: Indianapolis and Baltimore. - Last week I said the Giants and Jets would be the favorites to make the Super Bowl. Scratch that- if the Jets ride the momentum of a big win over by playing one of their worst games of the year the following week, they don‘t have much of a chance. The Titans are the favorites again… Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania is auctioning off the naming rights to its Park Place street. The eBay auction features

The move was requested by prosecutors in the perjury case against Bonds, citing the need for disclosure of the documents to the defense, and the fact that much of the material has been leaked to the media. Someone PLEASE stop them… The team is taking a wait and see approach with Tom Glavine, as well. Personally, I wish Glavine the best, but I’m hoping he’s unable to pitch again. At least not for the Braves. As I said when they signed him LAST offseason, his best years are but a memory… Police in Mount Isa, Australia arrested a man after he ran down a street in his underwearwith firecrackers strapped to his head. A police spokesperson said the man was “running close to one of our main roads, where the big road trains travel. It could have been quite tragic.” Or quite funny, “from a certain point of view,” to quote Obi-Wan Kenobi. I've learned that when talking to an assembly of several hundred high-school students, a little bit of sarcasm can go a long way to gaining their attention. "Take out your crayons and construction paper and write this down, because if I leave you with anything today, let it be this advice," I instructed them. To my surprise, most everyone took out their pens and opened their notebooks. "The route to all unhappiness leads through comparison." I suppose that's just a wordier way to say "the grass is always greener on the other side," but my way sounds a little more erudite. I was speaking to these stu-

(Print journalists all over America surely wept as they read that last sentence.) "My college roommate used to sweat a lot," I started. "He was a big, tough Irish kid and he used to play fullback for my alma mater's football team -- a team that ran the run-and-shoot offense, which didn't utilize a fullback. Naturally, he had a lot of time to think." I told them how he used to complain about the heavy cotton undershirts he used to wear, and that they used to hold several pounds of water weight. "Now, my roommate was a real entrepreneur ... the kind of industrious kid who sold Tshirts at rock concerts," I continued. "So one day he started asking the folks in the garment district about fabric. What kind of fabric would wick away his sweat?" A few heads in the room lifted. "So he hired a seamstress, made himself a shirt, told his coach it would give our team

(And he’ll forever now be known as Saul Garcia, the man with a little shrimp in his pants!) • An Officer checked the tag on a Corolla on Pine Barren Road, and dispatch took a little too long to return the results of their search. When they did,

they told him the car had been stolen in Savannah, and gave the suspect’s name. The Officer, with backup, stopped the car northbound on Pooler Parkway. The woman driving was the listed suspect. She told the Deputy she had rented the car from Hertz. The Officer looked at the rental agreement she provided, and noted that it was for one day only, June 10th of this year. The woman then said she had just paid them $1500 for two months rental. Of course, she couldn’t provide a receipt or any paperwork to back that up. The Officer contacted the Savannah Metro Office and even

called Hertz before placing the woman under arrest for theft by receiving stolen property.
