• Around 7:30pm, an Officer was sitting along Hwy 80 when he observed a Mazda pickup run the stop sign at Kessler Avenue, turning westbound on the highway. He made a traffic stop and the driver was arrested for driving while suspended. He called the owner of the truck to come pick it up before the truck was towed. The owner showed up and presented the Officer with his driver’s license, which the Officer ran past dispatch to learn that the man was wanted out of Bryan County. Both were taken to jail. • Just after 4am, an Officer responded to a report of a vehicle in a ditch on Wildwood Drive. He found a green Toyota that had driven across the front lawn and was now stuck in the ditch. The driver explained that he was just going to drive down the street to his home when the transmission locked up as he was backing out of the driveway. The Officer could smell the odor of alcohol on the man’s breath, and the man didn’t have his driver’s license with him. All of a sudden the man took off running. The Officer walked back to his patrol car and let his K-9 partner take it from there. The dog caught the man at the end of the block, and he was taken to jail for DUI, driving while suspended, open container, and obstruction by fleeing. (“Release the hounds!”) • An Officer stopped an eighteen wheeler for being under the influence of alcohol. The driver was sitting on the back of the flat bed trailer with his hands crossed in front of his face, praying. The driver admitted he’d had one beer and had taken a second beer to drink once he got home. The man failed his field sobriety tests and was charged with DUI. • At 3am, an Officer was running radar on Hwy 21 at Minus Avenue when he clocked a GMC pickup at 61mph in the 45mph zone. He pursued the driver and got him stopped just down the road. The man got out of the truck with a large amount of dip in his mouth. After failing his field sobriety tests, he was taken to jail for DUI. • Just before midnight, an Officer responded to the Coin Laundry where he found a very intoxicated man. The man admitted he didn’t have any clothes in the washer, and said he was just too tired to go home. Instead, he went to jail, charged with public intoxication. • Officers responded to a Garden City motel for a report of a disorderly person in one of the rooms. They knocked on the room door, and finally guests in the adjoining room walked out and said they’d left the room before the Officers got there. Soon they were notified of disorderly conduct in room 116 and responded to that room. They could hear a woman yelling to get out of the room, and she eventually came out. She told Officers that she just wanted to get outside to smoke a cigarette, and the man in the room wouldn’t let her out. They asked her for some ID, and soon she was giving them conflicting information. A check with the front desk revealed the woman’s real name, and the Officers found that she was wanted by Liberty County Deputies. She was taken into custody for them.

Everything just slipped up on me last week. First thing I knew, it was Wednesday and I hadn’t written anything. Oops…

of what you’ve just seen was a construct of the main characters’ minds- and how much was real. I like movies that make me think. I just wish thinking didn’t make my head hurt…

Well, I had written a little- but it’s on my laptop which, at the moment, is a large, electronic paperweight. Sunday after cutting the grass I got a “Disk Read Error.” I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the PC place around the corner from the house can fix it…

Okay, I fell asleep before the game even started Sunday night. I checked the score first thing Monday morning, though- and I think you can go ahead and stick a fork in the Braves. No division win, no wild card- just another winter at home. (Yes, I know I’ve said that before, but I mean it this time. Really.) Going into the weekend series against the front-running Phillies, Atlanta had a chance to cut the Phils’ lead to just two games. Of course, the Braves responded by dropping two of three- and this after holding a 9-0 record against Philadelphia at home this year. The only game they won was the one started by the worst pitcher in their rotation! Give me a break, already. Just go ahead and drop 15 or so of your next 20 and put us fans out of our misery. Southern hearts (we of the fried chicken and beer-type diets) aren’t strong enough for these ups and downs…

One of the things that’s disappeared was my mini-review (something I know you all look forward to) of the movie “Bug”, starring Ashley Judd (you know- the pretty and talented Judd) and some other people I’d never seen before. Well, except for Harry Connick, Jr.- but he wasn’t really the star. The movie was directed by William Friedkin- the guy best known for “The Exorcist” and “The French Connection.” Friedkin is a genius with dialogue and getting great performances out of his cast, and he doesn’t let us down here. Of course, plenty of people will hate this movie. Do you like nonstop action with very little dialogue? Skip this movie. Do you like everything wrapped up at the end? Boy howdy, do you ever need to skip this movie. And there are no explosions. As I said, though- there are stellar performances. And, at the end, you’re left to wonder how much

I will say I’m pleasantly surprised to be wrong about Adam Laroche’s performance since he’s returned to Atlanta. All he’s done is hit .372 with three home runs and 11 RBIs (Make that four ding-

in it for Shelby and I to sit on. The people at the gate made only a cursory inspection. As I told Shelby, I could’ve walked in with a 25 pound parcel of smack in our bag for the in-depth “search“ that was performed. (Then the money I’m going to have to spend to get my laptop problem repaired wouldn’t be such a big deal). - To paraphrase a tune: “I should’ve known better than to believe The stupid weather guys on TV That the rain It would stay Far away.” It sprinkled at first. Then stopped. Then it rained a little harder. Then stopped. Then, the freaking bottom dropped out. Within five minutes, we were soaked. The blankets we were holding over our heads worked for the sprinkle, just not the downpour. It was too little, too late. I wasn’t feeling great to start with. Shelby was being a great sport about everything. Once my leather sneakers were soaked through, though, neither one of us were having fun. So much for being glad the tickets were a third of what I’d paid to see him the last time. By the time we got home, we were both freezing and Shelby was feeling terrible Sunday. I think I’m running a low grade fever myself. When going green means I’m the green one from being sick, well…

Shelby and I went to see Paul McCartney’s “Green” concert in Piedmont Park Saturday night. I’m a huge fan- and his show at Philips a few years ago was the greatest show I’d ever seen. I figured this one couldn’t help but be good- could it? But when have I ever been known to pass up an opportunity to gripe? First of all- how “green” can your entourage be when the big rigs you use to haul your stage and equipment around are idling on the street for hours on end. Not moving- just idling. Who knows how long they’d been sitting there- but they sure weren’t going anywhere until well after midnight. How stupid of me to think they‘d practice what they were preaching. McCartney was in fine voice, though- and the hour and a half we heard of the concert was good. Here’s what was less than thrilling about the day/night: - General admission meant that everybody just kind of plopped down where they felt like it. We thought we’d staked out a good spot, but we got crowded in just the same. Thank goodness for the fence behind us. Until the lightning started popping- then we were just leaning against a gigantic lightning rod. - Gates opened at 4 (for VIPs and people who bought their tickets through AmEx) but there was no show until 7 PM. So everybody who got there early pretty much just sat there and baked for a few hours. I heard one of the volunteers mentioned someone had passed out and the paramedics had taken the person to the hospital with either heat stroke or a heart attack. - The no outside food or drink thing was evidently just a suggestion, as were the “no lawn chairs“ and “no cameras“ warnings. I carried a small pack with two blankets

A few other observations from Saturday: There was a dude in a fairy outfit, dancing (or floating) through the crowd and (evidently) charging people to have their picture taken with him. He reminded me of the tooth fairy from “Family Guy”- and that’s not exactly a compliment. Some guy with no chin stood next to Shelby for a few minutes and kept drinking his beer. Of course, he

The Richmond Hill High football doesn’t get or hasn’t gotten a lot of publicity over the past few years. That comes with the territory when a team finds it hard every year to pull out a few victories. Last year the team won its first two games and then proceeded to lose eight in a row. Out of the gloom of losses on a high school level, a future star on the collegiate ranks has begun to show his true colors as he battles not only to make a local Division-1AA program, but inevitaRichmond Hill’s Josh Davis bly a starting position and become a head coach one day,” on the squad. (Editor’s Note: Outdoor Truths is a weekly sportsman’s article that appears in newspapers and regional magazines across 13 states in the South, and Midwest. It is a blend of observations and experiences that have come over time from being in God’s great outdoors. We’re proud to offer this column for the outdoor sportsmen in our area.) It really is fun to watch hunters this time of year. We are no different than any other group or even species. I would guess that every animal or mammal has trigger mechanisms – those things that happen that tell them something else is about to happen. For instance, we know that certain moon phases trigger certain types of behavior in some animals. We also know that these trigger points have to do with aspects of how they were created. Some creatures hear at levels above or below that which a human can hear. Some creatures have other sensory perceptions that allow them to detect weather conditions far in advance of our modern technology. Hunters must have something as well; I just don’t know what. But I do know there is something within us that triggers a trip to the hunting store. I don’t think it’s just the fact that it’s August. I think it’s much more complicated than that. Some would say that all of the hunting shows cause us to react the way we do, but I’m not so sure. In fact, I wonder which comes first, the hunting shows or the urge to hunt? I actually feel like I’m part of an old science fiction movie where all of the people that the aliens

have possessed, come in a trance, to a central location to wait on the mother ship to arrive. No one tells them to come; there’s just an urge that comes over them so strong, they just have to leave. The other day I had this same urge. It was drawing me to the WalMart hunting department. I had not seen any advertisement nor had I been invited; there was just this call – this odd call – that said, “Come.” When I arrived, there were other people there. They too could not say why they came, and some even how they got there, but there we were together, waiting on the mother ship. We looked up to see when she might appear. The day and time was posted on a white eraser board behind the counter. We watched and waited, and longed for the arrival. Even though her coming was several days away, there was just something about being around those things that reminded us of her. The smell of Acorn Rage, corn, and C’mere Deer permeated the aisles. They even played videos of the previous visits where she had come and gone. They made the wait harder to endure, but it was good to see how others reacted to that special day.

must’ve spent a ridiculous amount of money- ‘cause there was more of it going down his shirt than into his mouth. I guess it’s hard to take in liquid adequately when you don’t have a chin. At least he was carrying a napkin. There were two drunken hoochies just off to our right who were evidently signaling to the men (or women) in the crowd that they’d had two beers and were, therefore, ready for some “fun.” Some guy kept wandering past us wearing a frilly pirate shirt and black tights. He probably had some suede boots on, too- but I couldn’t stop looking (and laughing) at the

I think someone should punch them in their fat faces till they promise to never, ever play/sing again.” Sandi is always so much more succinct in her criticism than I am… The Falcons opened up their preseason play with a 27-26 loss to the Lions Saturday. To be fair, though, the Lions scored the majority of their points in the second half- which means that the guys who Detroit was “taking a look at” were marginally better than the guys the Falcons were “taking a look at.”

Former Bulldog Matthew Stafford was seven of 14 for 114 yards, a TD and a pick for the Lions in his first NFL game. Learn to run with numbers like those and you’re Michael Vick…

Speaking of the former Falcon- Vick signed with the Eagles a couple of weeks ago. Hey, he’s done his time (unlike Ray Lewis, who got away with murder)- cut Vick some slack. The Eagles decided they could handle the PR nightmare that will follow Vick this season, so more power to them. Me, though- I can’t understand what position the Eagles want Vick to play. They have a good QB. Heck, they have a pretty good second stringer, too. I still say Vick is best suited to be a runner or receiver (if he can catch the ball, of course)…

CAPT. JUDY HELMY’S FISHING REPORT Inshore Fishing with Captain Reynolds Captain Rick Reynolds Predicts An Early Fall Trout Season Capt. Rick Reynolds and son Captain Jeremy Reynolds of Miss Judy Charters went on a quick scouting trip this past week. They kept 12 nice spotted sea trout. All fish were caught on live shrimp purchased from Adams Bait House (912 898 1550) while using an “Inticer Popping Cork!” The fish bite was the strongest on the last hour of the incoming tide and first hour of the out going. For direct information on a charter with Captain Rick or Captain Jeremy Reynolds please call me (Captain Judy 912 897 4291) or if you want to personally speak with Captain Rick Reynolds please call 1 912 844 8086. He will be glad to “offer up” the latest in catching details! Inshore fishing Bait suggestions Large Live shrimp or finger mullet for red fish, medium to small shrimp for spotted sea trout. The best news is these baits will work under an adjustable float, popping cork or just plain naked! Captains Choice By Captain Alan Collins In today’s economy your spare money is important to you, so if you decide to use it on a day of fishing you want to make sure you get the best trip for your money. Being a guide I can tell you there’s a lot more to it than just getting on the boat and catching fish, high tide, low tide, spring tide, wind etc. what I’m saying is there’s a lot of variables that can let you catch your limit one day and just a couple the next. Some would say that’s fishing but there’s a little more to it than that. That’s where your guide comes in. He or she fishes these waters many days a year and can tell you what’s biting in the conditions that your facing for that day, when you book a trip try to be flexible meaning your guide may suggest fishing the afternoon because there might be a better tide or the wind may be forecasted to lay down, being a guide I can tell you there’s no worst of a feeling than looking into the faces of people that had high expectations and only caught a few fish because of weather or it was just simply the wrong time of the year to fish for the type of fish they wanted to catch, but at miss Judy charters we understand the importance of repeat costumers and want EVERYBODY that fishes with us to have a good time and recommend us to there friends and family, so here are a few tips to help increase your chances of a good day of fishing.#1 ask what should be biting in the time frame of your trip. #2 ask about a back up plan in case the weather is not great when you get here.#3 try to give the company enough notice so your captain can look over the tides and come up with the best plan to insure you a good time, for example if I have a weeks notice I’ll take notes of the fishing leading up to your trip and know exactly where we are going and what time we need to be there.#4 ask if you can talk to the captain, get his or her thoughts on what you should be looking for. I love talking to the client a few days before the trip so I can get a feel on what there looking to do for the day and we can usually come up with a plan that makes every one happy. Don’t get me wrong we want your business and hopefully your return business and we will take you fishing for any fish you want to target but just be mindful that we can’t control elements, but if you want to target red fish and your mind is set on that and you understand that the bite might be slow if the conditions are not right then I can live with that and I will fish my butt off to catch you that trophy red, but if you are coming down for vacation and bringing the kids and you would like to have a few fish for dinner but more important just feel the pull of a fish on the end of your line then ask the questions, be a little flexible and come with the mind set your here to have fun and relax. Then give your captain a little more say and I’ll promise you it will be well worth the money your spending to do so. Beach Fronts Smoking Smoker King!

I don’t have a picture, but Captain David Newlin caught a 67-pound king mackerel about 2 miles off St. Catherine’s Island this past week. While float fishing for a tarpon this big smoker took Captain David up on his “baiting deal” of a 10-inch live mullet. According to the report, he had several cut offs before adding on a piece of light wire leader. As you know “tarpon” don’t have teeth. So therefore, this is one captain that read all the signs handed and certainly took advantage of them! Just Fishing! By Captain Judy Helmey My new termology for fishing is called “Just Fishing!” The reason being is that I have been fishing a long time and I know for a fact even when you target a specific fish there is always a chance that the catch opportunity might not arise! Even “great fishermen” meaning “from regular great to just plain old charter fishermen” there are times that the fish just don’t bite for them!” The fish might be there and even though you see them they could care less about that bait that you are offering! So therefore for those fishermen that will allow me to do so “Captain Judy has gone into the I’m just fishing mode!” Take for instance “The Blackburn Charter, which was one of lasts weeks charters. Before we left the dock I knew we were going to have a great time. The group was smiling and positive in every way! All they wanted to do was go fishing and that’s exactly what we did. And we caught a little of everything from grouper to snapper (all kinds) to one of the largest nurse sharks that we have caught all year! I truly believe that if we had only caught an average amount of fish they still would have been happy! As I have always said, “Positive attitudes travel down the line and brings on one heck of a fish bite!” There are more fish in the cooler! Here are some options for those fishermen out there that want to go “Just Fishing while Just Drift!” Once you arrived to the live bottom area of the Savannah Banks I suggest to just start drifting and just fishing. However, to insure that you can return back to where “bites happened” I suggest writing your coordinates down where you started your drift. I also suggest writing the coordinates down where you marked any sort of bottom or top water fish. You must remember fish even though you can see them don’t always bite! When you are making a drift like this you should always situated your boat the same way. I always situated my boat “Miss Judy Too” starboard side to the wind, which means the wind hits this side of the boat. I have my customer drop down starboard side and off the stern. This keeps all lines straight and not tangled at least most of the time. By always keeping this drift procedure in mind “making blue print drifts” are easier to do. Baits Suggestions When Just Fishing! Part One (more to follow next week) Lets assume you are fishing in around 90 to 110 depth of water. This makes for lots of “where the fish are possibilities!” The fish finder can help you a lot in regards to this matter. If you are not marking fish on the bottom and it’s basically flat chances are you are drifting over a sandy bottom at least for the moment. However, if you are at the banks, which have all kinds of live bottom areas, then you will eventually as well as most likely drift over fish sooner than later. This is where writing coordinates down helps with catching fish. The best news is there are occupants in the live bottom world that can move freely and fast in the water column. These “movers and shakers” are normally baits with “no bladders.” Baits with ‘no air bladders” are cigar minnows and

Spanish sardines types. These fish normally “school up in large numbers” and can move quickly from one depth without any “inner adjustment.” I call these fish the “nervous ones!” These bait fish can seen around the ledge or live bottom area. It seems where you have an sort of bottom structure sort of an upwelling is formed offering fish so called shelter and feeding opportunities. When you see any sort of small fish schooling especially in this area there normally is some live bottom down below. Gulf Stream The blue and green waters are still holding the interests of the same fish. This means all waters are holding all fish boiling down to the blue water bite can be found almost anywhere. So therefore when you go trolling for king mackerel at the artificial reefs you just might catch a sailfish or who knows what else! While trolling a 31/2 Drone spoon at the Savannah Snapper Banks this past week I “hooked up” a real big fish. This fish’s pull was strong, it stayed deep, didn’t give much up to the angler holding the rod, and when it was time to leave “the fish just simply emptied the reel!” As all this was taking place the angler looked up at me and said, “What do I need to do?” I answered, “Just hold on and when whatever it is stops running you start reeling!” The bad news is the fish never stopped running! Freshies Suggestion All Fishermen as well a fish return to the same spot! While talking with Jamie and A J Bragg I learned a few fresh water tips. It seems that they go fishing every year about the same time, in the same pond, and they catch about the same amount of fish. On this last “same time fishing trip” to the pond they caught 40 large mouth bass. All fish hit the same lure, which was a “Pumpkin Seed Worm” made by ZOOM. They rigged the worm up weed less with a 2/0 hook, added a small bullet weight, started making casts to their designated fishing spot, and caught 10 fish per hour for four hours! According to this fishing report these fish don’t have to worry until next year where they intend on doing the same thing at the same time with the same bait! The bottom line to this report is “if it works keeps doing the same thing!”

be in your future. Some duck hunters call it “wading in your waders.” However in my case it was most always swimming in my waders, which means water outside and inside of them. For those of you that are not duck hunters then I need to make you aware that this art is preformed during the cold months. So therefore when you got wet anywhere it was a “cold to the bone feeling!” As a child I was very cold natured. So therefore, I always overdressed, which meant I was extra heavy once I took the plunge into the icy waters. However, daddy didn’t seem to mind too much, because it never seemed to bother him to fish me out of the water. The best part about duck hunting was the calls that my father made to attract the ducks. Now that I think about it there were other accomplished calls that he preformed to get the moose, turkey, and crow’s attention. However my absolute favorite was the “Human siren call.” He could stick his head out of a car window, make his siren call, and over to the side of the road the cars would go. Daddy would do this when he was in a hurry to get someplace or if he had a slowpoke driver in front of him. I just loved! It was so cool! I know I am rambling, but some times when certain things come to mind you just have to share them. Back to the duck calls. My father had four favorite duck calls. The first was called “lonely duck call.” This one is kind of self-explanatory, when a

duck flew by or was approaching daddy made this call. It was suppose to get them to fly towards the duck blind in search of friendship. At least that’s what daddy called it. The second duck call was “plenty of food call.” He used this call when he had numerous ducks flying over. The third call sounded like the first one. It was called the “I’m interested duck call.” The fourth and last that I can remember was the “last chance duck call.” This according to daddy was your best shot at getting those duck’s attention that just flew straight by without even looking down. The bottom line was this when my father took aimed he rarely missed. Since I was the fetcher most of the time I was always on “ready go!” As my father got older we use to go to the park and feed the ducks. All I could think about was how much trouble we both would be in if only these ducks knew the real story. Thanks for reading! Captain Judy

He loved to hunt doves, quails, quails, ducks, and crows. His favorite as well as mine was the art of hunting ducks. I call it an art, because that’s actually what it is. I think that you will agree especially after your read this article. The first thing you needed to know was how to do dress properly. When you went hunting for ducks a little swimming could

months of World War I, when its predecessor, Ishikawajima, built British Wolsley cars under license in Japan. For years, Isuzu and its antecedents built trucks, and in the 1960s Isuzu built the Bellet and the diesel-powered Bellel cars. After General Motors bought a third interest in Isuzu in ‘71, there soon appeared an Isuzu-built Chevy Luv compact pickup truck, later joined and superseded by the Chevy S-10 pickup. In 1976, Isuzu began building an Opel (usually German-built) for Buick, which had been handling the German Opel in the U.S. Isuzu built the Spectrum for Chevrolet from 1985 to 1989, the later ones under the Geo name. The Geo Storm that appeared in 1990 also was a product of Isuzu. Later, it was Honda’s turn to build a vehicle for Isuzu, which resulted in the Isuzu Oasis, a nearidentical twin to Honda’s Odyssey! On the West Coast in 1997, the Odyssey was priced at $23,955, while the Oasis was slightly higher, at $24,175. Prices often would vary during a model year, and usually were higher in the West than elsewhere in the U.S. Honda’s Odyssey was introduced in the U.S. in 1995, and its twin Oasis in 1996. The Oasis was discontinued after 2008. *** Tad Burness welcomes mail from readers. His address is “Auto Album,” P.O. Box 247, Pacific Grove, CA 93950. HOLE IN TIRE EXPOSES HOLES IN DEALER’S STORY BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI Dear Tom and Ray: My friend has a fancy-shmancy 2007 BMW 3 Series. Recently, one of his tires blew out through the sidewall and left a gaping, scarylooking hole. That tire and the other three all have plenty of tread, so the blow-out seems troubling to me. He took it to the dealer, who told him: (1) All of his tires need to be replaced ASAP, because the same thing probably will happen to them soon; (2) he shouldn’t have Goodyear tires of any kind because they’re no good for this particular car; and (3) the only tires he ever should put on it are the model and brand they have at the dealership, which cost about $160 each, plus installation. He doesn’t do any racing or any crazy driving -- he just drives normally. I’m convinced they’re trying to pressure him into buying four of the most expensive tires possible. What do you think? -- Ernie RAY: I don’t think they’re trying to pressure him into buying the most expensive tires possible, Ernie. They’re just trying to get him to buy the most expensive tires they have in stock. TOM: I’d have to disagree with the dealer on all counts here. First of all, Goodyear makes some excellent tires. The only thing that’s wrong with Goodyear tires in this case is that this dealer doesn’t happen to sell them. RAY: We don’t know why your friend’s sidewall blew out. It could

have been a defect in the tire. Or he could have banged the tire against a curb and created a weak spot or a bubble that eventually blew. TOM: We can’t see the tires. So, to be fair to the BMW dealer, it’s also possible that all four tires are in worse shape than you think they are. Or they could have the wrong load or speed rating for your friend’s car. RAY: But I would suggest going back to the Goodyear dealer where he bought the tires. First of all, he can get a second opinion on the condition of the other three tires. And if the one that blew out failed due to a defect, they might replace the tire for free under warranty. TOM: Or, if the tires are older but still good, they may be able to sell your friend a used one that’s a close-enough match in tread life to its axle-mate that he’d have to buy only one tire. RAY: I’m sure the tires that the dealer is recommending would work very well on the car, but they’re hardly the only ones that will work well. And as long as the tires meet the specifications set by the manufacturer (check the owner’s manual), your friend can buy any brand of replacement tires he likes, Ernie. *** Get more Click and Clack in their new book, “Ask Click and Clack: Answers from Car Talk.” Got a question about cars? There are some interesting effects you can create, and we’ll tell you everything you need to know so you can decide if you are ready for one of your own. First of all, the cost is a fraction of that of most other floor “coverings,” so if you are on a budget, this is the flooring for you. and anything else you need to get the existing concrete surface totally clean. Don’t acid-wash it unless your stain tells you to do so. If it has been sealed, it won’t work. The floor needs to be completely dry before you begin. The chemicals you will be using are acids, so you really need to take precautions and wear gloves, safety goggles, a face mask and protective clothing. The process is really varied and depends on the surface you are working on. To test your colors, find an out-of-the-way place, like a closet or under the fridge. Mask off the walls, doors and any other surfaces in the area. The acid stain usually is mixed

with water. Follow the manufacturer’s directions. Most are sprayed on and then broomed in. You might need a helper for this, as you want to work fast and not be going over dried edges. Don’t walk where you have worked in order to prevent footprints. You may wish to apply a second coat, or maybe even a different color. Wipe away any excess before proceeding to your second coat or your finish. After the acid stain has dried, you usually will need to apply a neutralizer, which might be something as simple as baking soda and water. Repeat this process and let the floor dry completely. Use the sealer that is recommended by your stain manufacturer. You may need to put down several coats, but you should get great results. The results will floor you. *** Q: It seems like our attic stairs are letting a lot of air down from the attic. I want to add some weatherstripping or insulation. What would you suggest? -- J.N. A: You can add weatherstripping to the door itself to help insulate it. You also can add insulation on top of the stairwell. There are specially designed covers that you can add within the attic to prevent air infiltration, too. Check online or at your local home center to see what it has. *** Petroleum jelly is an incredibly useful concoction. It’s perfect in the shop and super in the home. We bet you would love a list that we have put together of some of the many uses we have found for this stuff in and around the house. Some you may have tried, but hopefully others will be new to you. Heck, you may have some clever uses that we didn’t have on our list. If so, let us know, and we will add them to our list. If you would like a copy of our list or want to tell us about your alternative uses, just send a selfaddressed, stamped envelope to us at the newspaper, and we will get it out to you ASAP. We also will have it posted on our Web site at www. *** Got a question or a handy tip?
