so drunk, his hands were shaking as he spoke. He was arrested for DUI and taken to the Police Department, where he blew a .283. (How’d you like to be riding next to him on a wet, icy I-95 during a snowstorm?!) • Also during the snowstorm, a woman called Police to report that her neighbor had left his little doggie outside. The Officer arrived and found the dog in the back yard, shivering from the cold and snow. He called for Animal Control to come get the dog out of his nice, warm patrol car and take it to the Animal Shelter where it would be cared for. The Officer returned the next day and served the dog’s owner witha subpoena to court to answer to cruelty to animals charge. I flipped over to Fox Sunday evening, expecting to leave the TV on whatever insipid filler they run at 7:30. (Seriously- could it have gotten worse than that Michael Strahan sitcom? Of course, there was “The War at Home”, “Back to You” and “King of the Hill”- which was funny for all of one season, yet somehow lasted something like ten.) Anyway, I had to scratch my head when I saw they were still showing Daytona 500 coverage. “Don’t these guys go something like 175 miles an hour?” I wondered to myself. “They can’t still be going six
hours later.” Oh, I was wrong- seems they’d park the cars for a while, mid-race, to repair a pothole on the track. I had to laugh. Those guys need to drive the surface streets of Atlanta (or Savannah, even) sometime. We’ll show them what a pothole looks like. Of course, we’re not going 175- but it’s not for lack of effort… Spring training hasn’t even officially started (pitchers and catchers report Friday) and there’s already bad news for the Braves. ahead of workouts to determine why he’s having discomfort in his pitching shoulder. Jurrjens is scheduled to undergo an MRI in Atlanta at some point this week after having soreness while throwing at the club’s Spring Training headquarters last week. Jurrjens admitted to fatigue after his rookie season with the club when he tossed 188 1/3 innings in 2008 after never having thrown more than 143 1/3 innings in a professional season before that, but completed 215 innings last season with no problems after using some of the conditioning tips from John Smoltz. Jurrjens allowed two earned runs or less in 26 of 34 starts and posted a 0.97 ERA in his final five starts covering 37 innings…
And my new laptop is awesome. I was almost as happy as Navin R. Johnson when the new phone books came in…
Last week, I relayed my tale of how my laptop had shipped from China and how I was still waiting on a package from Illinois. Wouldn’t you know it? They both got her on the same day. That’s right- a package made it to from the other side of the freaking globe quicker than one that came from just one time zone away.
A male high school cheerleader in Washington says school officials discriminated against him when they refused to let him perform the same routines as the girls. The student claims he was told at the start of the school year that he would be able to participate in dance routines and other activities performed by the female cheerleaders- but was later pressured into wearing the school’s mascot uniform, and then barred from moving his legs or hips while cheering. The boy’s mother sent letters to state officials, the American Civil Liberties Union and other groups that eventually pressured the school into giving her son an official cheer uniform and pompoms, but she wasn‘t satisfied- and wants further measures taken, including seminars against discrimination and reprimands for school officials. “I think the combination of a biracial, mentally challenged gay

At one time the fields of Tennessee were full of quail. I can barely remember seeing a few coveys as I was growing up, and I never remember hunting them. I have, however, heard from those older than I the stories of earlier days when these hunts were as common as hunting rabbits. Today, if one wants to enjoy this sport, he still can. These birds may not be as plentiful in the wild, but there are plenty of places to go where outfitters will provide the birds and dogs to allow a hunter to have a very enjoyable wing shoot. And if he shoots good enough, he can also take home a very tasty meal. A few days ago, I traveled to a local outfitter’s farm for my first quail hunt. David, the owner, was kind enough to let me bring a friend. I called on my old high school basketball coach because I knew he would hit what I missed. Of course I didn’t tell him that. I told him that I wanted him to come because I knew he would be no competition for me. Well, let’s just say my first thought was right… it was my gun’s fault! We shot eight birds that morning and had the best time. The
weather was cold, but when the dogs started pointing and the birds started flying, we quickly forgot about anything else except finding the next quail. These are very inexpensive hunts and are not especially taxing on the body. It is a great trip to take a young shooter or even an older person who is not quite able to climb a lot or stay out all day. I’ve already made plans to go back and have already thought about who all I want to take. I am thankful to David for introducing me to this new opportunity. If you are interested in doing this, shoot me an email. When I think about my trip, I am reminded of how simple it really is to introduce someone to hunting or fishing; and that one needs not be a deer or turkey hunter in order to enjoy a hunt. The truth is big game hunting is getting more and more expensive. Because of this, less and less individuals are participating. Big game hunting also is more about waiting than it is shooting. And again, as a result, less people are interested. Small game hunting and wing shooting offer someone the opportunity to pull the trigger

multiple times and it doesn’t take a second mortgage to buy a license. These are the things that will be needed to continue our sport. And continuing our sport is so important because it offers young men and young women an alternative to malls and video games, and it puts them in the outdoors where the highs are natural and where the thrills will be waiting each time they come back.

male may be too much for them,” said the mom. Wow- like the kid doesn’t have enough cards going against him, she wants to subject him to ridicule, too. We had all of one male cheerleader at SCJ when I was there and pretty much everyone made fun of him (nothing but love for ya, JS). I did too, for about a minute- then, I realized that he was the one who got to do all of the lifts and stuff. You know what I mean… Oh yeah- the Olympics started Friday. Try to contain yourselves… And there’s this- it was a shame about the luger (luge rider? Luge pilot?- What do you call them?) who died while practicing before the games even started, but my only thoughts about whether or not the footage should have been shown on TV boils down to this: There’s always an audience for mayhem, sorrow and destruction (I refuse to use the word tragedy, as it’s tossed about far too easily), and there will always be someone willing to provide coverage of it (be it the ‘net, networks, or whatever). If you’re squeamish, don’t watch… Shelby had Olympics’ coverage on when I got home Monday afternoon. I managed maybe 15 minutes before I had to change the channel (at the time, she was playing her “Farmville” game or something on Facebook)- but not before hearing them say something about one of the competitors who was an autistic gay male (or some

such), which made me wonder- for a second, anyway- if that Washington state cheerleader had made it to the Olympics… Police in Leigh-on-Sea, England are searching for a thief accused of stealing a lone cufflink worth $187 from a jeweler there. Officers said staff at the store reported a suspicious man entering the store, but didn’t realize what had happened until viewing CCTV tapes. Why the one cufflink? Wellthe man had only one arm. In a related story, Chicago police are seeking to question the man in the murder of a Helen Kimble, wife of Dr. Richard Kimble… We had about three inches of snow here in Norcross last Friday. Yeehaw! I also had my longest commute ever that didn’t involve an errand on the way home. That’s right- it took me fifteen minutes to get home in the snow. I actually left work a little early Friday, so as not to get caught in the teeth of the stupidity I just knew would be happening on the roads. I shudder to think what it would’ve been like if I’d left at 3:30. The snow was actually coming down in such a way that reduced visibility, so I can’t completely discount the bad conditions. Of course, drivers here are suspect in good conditions. I was most worried about Shelby having to go into work the next morning, when it was actually going to be cold, and there was sure to be plenty of ice. Our street, in fact, had ice on it all the way up to Monday afternoon- thanks to abundant shade. It really wasn’t all that much snow,

but- from the way news types and weather witches were blathering on about it, you would’ve thought we were in the midst of another ice age when- in reality- we only got a spattering. Shelby’s parents had something like two and a half feet of snow a couple of weekends agoand John had to dig his car out. That’s a lot of snow… I’ve been sentenced to wearing the Frankenstein boot again due to what is best described as a “pop” in my foot that got crushed a couple of years ago. The first doctor I saw couldn’t see anything on the x-ray and sent the films off to an orthopedist to check. Except, when I went back for a follow up Monday, they had no answers for me- evidently, the blizzard had kept the films from making it to the specialist. I was sentenced to another week of ice cold toes and “clunking” with every step. I was relieved when the initial diagnosis was a sprain (not another break), but- looking at the x-ray, I have to admit- I was more than a little disturbed by the weird way my metatarsal had “healed”. It looks almost like a stretched out “s”- that’s the best description I can come up with, and it makes me wonder if I maybe shouldn’t seek not just a second opinion, but some legal advice, too. I just have this fear that I’ll go to a lawyer’s office and the guy will be the cowboy hat wearing dude from those awful TV commercials… I mentioned (on Facebook- how did we ever keep up with everyone without it?) that- between snow, cold weather, rain, head colds, ach-

ing backs and busted feet, it didn’t seem that Shelby and I would ever to get to ride our Christmas bikes and Craig suggested that- “with a little creativity, you could engineer a wicked course through the kitchen and your living room area. Maybe even include the garage for the off-road effect. Don’t be so negative!” How about this for a positiveI’m positive you can… Uh… never mind… I’m sorry that I’m going to miss the DaVinci exhibit at the High (it’s closing this weekend), but I just can’t see clomping around the museum in this stupid boot- with or without the assistance of crutches. I guess I’ll have to make a trip to wherever it is that houses most of his work and see it there. Besides, a couple of people (whose opinions I actually trust) say the show wasn’t particularly impressive. Still, it’s a bummer…

Dear Tom and Ray: I have a 2003 Toyota Prius, which has gone 67,000 miles. I always take it to the dealer, and recently had it there for its 65,000-mile service. After a fairly long wait, the service manager came to me to tell me that there had been an accident. They had driven the car crooked onto the oilchange rack, and “the wheel fell off.” I have to admit that I really didn’t know exactly what that meant, except that it didn’t sound too good. He took me into the work area, where they were already doing a frontwheel alignment on my car. He said that the realignment was being done because of possible damage when the car’s wheel fell off the rack. There was no charge, and he admitted they were at fault here. They also are replacing some rubber thingie under the front bumper that has had a rip in it for about four years. So I do not have a problem with the dealership in this respect. My questions are these: Could there be further damage, such as hairline cracks and bent or dented pieces under the car, as a result of this accident? Is this something that may show up later as a serious problem? Thanks. -- Mary RAY: I don’t think there’s anything more to worry about, Mary. If they were able to align the front wheels, that means the parts are all working as they should be. TOM: Here’s what happened: There are certain “ramp lifts” that have two tracks that you drive the car onto. My guess is that some kid who was trying to send a text message at the same time drove your car onto the lift crooked, and one of the front wheels dropped off the side. That’s not easy to do, by the way. RAY: There were two reasons why it took so long for the service manager to come and tell you about it. First, he wanted to assess the damage himself, so he’d know what to tell you. Second, he had to chase this kid around the shop a few times with a tire iron. TOM: When a car falls down like that, what breaks its fall are the front suspension and steering components. And it’s certainly possible that a lower control arm or a tie rod got bent. But those pieces are pretty tough. RAY: And if a tie rod, for example, were bent, they would not be

able to align the front wheels. So if they successfully aligned the car, that suggests that either no damage was done, or they were able to fix it before bringing you into the service area. TOM: But if you’re worried that they missed something, or that they’re covering something up, there are two things you can do. The first test is the easiest: Just drive the car. RAY: If you feel it no longer tracks straight, or the steering feels unusual in any way, then they may have missed something. And in that case, you’ll need to take it back to them and ask them to take a closer look and fix it. TOM: But if it handles exactly as it did before this mishap, then all is well. I don’t know of any of those parts that could sustain “hidden damage” and break later. I think any damage would be apparent right now. RAY: But if you’re still worried, Mary, the next step is to take it to another dealer. Tell the dealer what happened, and explain that it occurred at another shop. You don’t have to tell them which shop did it, since they may be reluctant to criticize a fellow dealer. Or they may know the kid who did it. They may have fired him last week after chasing him around THEIR shop with a tire iron. TOM: Just ask them to inspect the car for you, and see if they can detect any damage. And if a second, independent set of eyes sees nothing, you’re home free, Mary. *** Get more Click and Clack in their new book, “Ask Click and Clack: Answers from Car Talk.” Got a question about cars? IT’S A SHAME THAT MORE OF THESE DID NOT SURVIVE THE 1940s You never heard of a car called the “Wanderer”? Well, it’s not surprising, because this was a German car not sold in the U.S., and was discontinued when World War II began in 1939. This ‘36 (‘37 similar) Wanderer was a car of high quality, but never popular like the Mercedes-Benz, BMW or, of course, the see-it-everywhere post-war Volkswagens. Because of the ravages of WWII, many Wanderers and other rare European cars were blown to bits in air raids, or were scrapped for their needed steel. However, in 1970, a gentleman in Australia (not Austria!) had a mint-condition 1924 Wanderer touring car (phaeton) with only 69 actual miles on it, and offered to sell it for offers above $6,500. It had been in storage in Australia since 1925. When I attended Lakeview Elementary School in Oakland, Calif., during World War II, a new kid, Harry Weinberg, arrived to join our third-grade class. His family had fled from Germany to escape the mass murder of Jews the Nazis were perpetrating, and Harry had brought with him a fascinating little German wind-up toy convertible that looked somewhat like this ‘36 Wanderer. The elaborate toy had a tiny gearshift lever that you could move with your finger to change speeds. I’d never seen such a detailed toy car as this, being used to the 10-cent Tootsietoys that most kids bought. Harry’s car was the hit of “show and tell” that day.
The producers of Wanderer began as bicycle manufacturers, then motorcycles, and then cars (first known as Wandermobil). *** Tad Burness welcomes mail from readers. His address is “Auto

• A Richmond Hill woman filed a report after finding that someone in Ohio had withdrawn $500 from her account with her credit card number. • Deputies were alerted at 1:30am that a white Ford pickup had just been stolen from a Hwy 280 convenience store. The truck was being followed by a maroon car driven by an accomplice. A Deputy was just a mile away when the
1-912-202-8986 • 1-912-826-5400
alert went out. He quickly spotted the truck coming towards him and turned around to pursue it. The driver refused to stop for the Deputy’s lights, accelerating to over 100mph. The driver then attempted to turn east on I-16, but was going to fast to make the turn. He lost control of the truck, careened down the embankment and struck several trees. The driver continued to try and escape, driving the truck through the grassy area until he got it stuck. The man then exited the truck and fled on foot, scampering to the top of the exit ramp to Hwy 280 to meet with his friend in the maroon Oldsmobile. That car took off at a high rate of speed. The Deputies pursued them and made a felony traffic stop near the Effingham line on Hwy 80 with weapons drawn. The men were returned to the convenience store and positively identified by witnesses. The truck thief told Deputies he saw the keys in the ignition and just took the opportunity to steal the truck. His accomplice admitted driving away from the store with his lights off to help his friend escape. Both were taken to jail. (Real justice would be
turning them over to the truck’s owner!) • Just after 5am, a Deputy was dispatched to Cypress Bay Loop Road where he found a man laying in the roadway, drunk and bleeding from the face. He tried finding out what had happened, but the man was too drunk to answer any questions. • Just after 8:30pm, a Deputy was eastbound on Hwy 204 and watching the Ford Taurus in front of him weaving in the roadway and occassionally running off the road. Just before making a traffic stop, the driver signalled to make a left hand turn onto Tony Branch Road. However, the driver completely missed the road, and ended up turning into a dirt field. The Deputy asked the man for his license, and the man admitted it was suspended. The license plate on the Taurus returned to a Chrysler Sebring. The man was taken to jail for DUI, driving while suspended, and about a dozen other charges. • Deputies are looking for a Richmond Hill woman who wrote a bad check to pay for the decal for her 2008 Dodge Durango.
