Kelly Clarkson, 29, says her footwear is a lot like her music: “There’s a little bit of everything!” She’s got the diva shoes, the Converse Chuck Taylors, the cowboy boots—but she likes performing in her bare feet. As for her musical mix of pop, country, R&B, and rock, the Texas native says, “I incorporate all those elements because, honestly, I’d get bored otherwise.” The first American Idol winner spoke to Kate Meyers about life on and off the road.

Definitely. I actually picked that title, and most of the songs I wrote or selected are very much about empowerment and strength. Really great things have been happening during these years, but at the same time it’s been quite the roller coaster. I’ve loved my 20s, but I would never repeat them. I feel like I’m more grounded, more stable. You got your start on a reality talent show; do you watch them now?

I’m a sucker for them! I love The Voice. Blake [Shelton] is a friend of mine, and he’s one of the judges, so I watched it for that, and then I fell in love with the show. I still watch Idol [season 11 begins in January], and it’s still the No. 1 show, so obviously I’m not the only one who loves to sit at home and be entertained. 6 • October 30, 2011

Man, I just keep going on horrible dates. I’m like, “There’s not enough wine in the world for me to enjoy this.” I actually had a guy say to me—and I hope he sees this because he is so ridiculous—he said, “I can’t believe I’m on a date with Kelly Clarkson.” And under my breath I was like, “Wow, I can’t either.” Some days I think, “I’ll meet him. Everybody finds somebody,” and other days I’m like, “Maybe I won’t. Maybe I just missed the memo.” What would we be surprised to know about you?

People think I’m a jeansall-the-time girl, but I adore dresses. Let’s face it, if you have a butt, then it’s just much easier to wear a dress!

I had never paid attention to school lunch, until one day when I forgot to pack mine and decided to eat in the cafeteria. What I saw—the tiny window of time the kids had to eat, the processed foods— shocked me. I knew that many students were living in poverty, and that this might be their best meal all day. ZETIAÂŽ (EZETIMIBE) TABLETS PATIENT INFORMATION ABOUT ZETIA (ze˘t´-eÂŻ-a˘) Read this information carefully before you start taking ZETIA and each time you get more ZETIA. There may be new information. This information does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or your treatment. If you have any questions about ZETIA, ask your doctor. Only your doctor can determine if ZETIA is right for you.

WHAT IS ZETIA? ZETIA is a medicine used to lower levels of total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood. ZETIA is for patients who cannot control their cholesterol levels by diet and exercise alone. It can be used by itself or with other medicines to treat high cholesterol. You should stay on a cholesterol-lowering diet while taking this medicine. ZETIA works to reduce the amount of cholesterol your body absorbs. ZETIA does not help you lose weight. ZETIA has not been shown to prevent heart disease or heart attacks. For more information about cholesterol, see the “What should I know about high cholesterol? section that follows.

WHO SHOULD NOT TAKE ZETIA?

In clinical studies patients reported few side effects while taking ZETIA. These included diarrhea, joint pains, and feeling tired. Patients have experienced severe muscle problems while taking ZETIA, usually when ZETIA was added to a statin drug. If you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness while taking ZETIA, contact your doctor immediately. You need to do this promptly, because on rare occasions, these muscle problems can be serious, with muscle breakdown resulting in kidney damage. Additionally, the following side effects have been reported in general use: allergic reactions (which may require treatment right away) including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat that may cause difďŹ culty in breathing or swallowing, rash, and hives; raised red rash, sometimes with target-shaped lesions; joint pain; muscle aches; alterations in some laboratory blood tests; liver problems; stomach pain; inflammation of the pancreas; nausea; dizziness; tingling sensation; depression; headache; gallstones; inammation of the gallbladder. Tell your doctor if you are having these or any other medical problems while on ZETIA. For a complete list of side effects, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT HIGH CHOLESTEROL?

cholesterol is made up of LDL and HDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is called “badâ€? cholesterol because it can build up in the wall of your arteries and form plaque. Over time, plaque build-up can cause a narrowing of the arteries. This narrowing can slow or block blood ow to your heart, brain, and other organs. High LDL cholesterol is a major cause of heart disease and one of the causes for stroke. HDL cholesterol is called “goodâ€? cholesterol because it keeps the bad cholesterol from building up in the arteries. Triglycerides also are fats found in your blood.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ZETIA Medicines are sometimes prescribed for conditions that are not mentioned in patient information leaets. Do not use ZETIA for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give ZETIA to other people, even if they have the same condition you have. It may harm them. This summarizes the most important information about ZETIA. If you would like more information, talk with your doctor. You can ask your pharmacist or doctor for information about ZETIA that is written for health professionals. Inactive ingredients:

Why should parents be worried about what kids are eating at school?

When the cafeteria mirrors a fast-food restaurant, we’re wasting an opportunity to educate kids about healthy eating. You may think, “It’s just pizza, but at some schools, pizza can have 62 ingredients. Do you think eating a good lunch can bolster learning?

Yes. When I started eating school lunch, I ďŹ nally understood why I was getting so many blank stares during the afternoons. The kids had only 20 minutes to go through the line, get their food, eat, and clean up. So often they just gobbled up what they liked— the chocolate milk or frozen fruit pop—and tossed the rest. How can parents help improve their school’s cafeteria?

The ďŹ rst step is to go to school and have lunch with your child. Think of it as your fact-ďŹ nding mission. How much time is allotted? What is being served? Then talk to your principal about what steps can be taken, like swapping out snacks in vending machines, adding a salad bar, or planting a school vegetable garden.

Manner Up! Q: My son Jack, 7, and the neighbors’ kids play together all the time. Recently, the neighbors had a party for their boy and didn’t invite Jack. Jack is autistic and doesn’t realize he wasn’t included, but I am angry. What should I do? —Name withheld A: As the mother of an autistic son, I feel like calling up your neighbors and yelling, “What’s wrong with you people?” But righteous fury is counterproductive. Be grateful that at his age, your son has the gift of obliviousness. Only one thing is truly important here: that he has relationships with other kids. You want to maintain them, even if you secretly think the neighbors are idiots. So the next time a kid on the block has a party, launch a preemptive strike: Say that Jack wants to take him out for a celebration of their own, and then go for pizza or cake. Does this put the burden on you? Yes. But this is your child, and you want him to have good times and friendships. Finally, remember this: Your son is changing every day. The troubling behavior he may exhibit in group situations today could be significantly better, or even gone, in a year or two. —Judith Newman Send your questions to Parade.com/mannerup

It’s exactly the kind of reaction the show’s host is striving for. “The world is filled with negativity,” DeGeneres tells me, sitting in her sunny, cream-and-white office at Warner Brothers Studios. “I want people to watch me and think, ‘I feel good, and I’m going to make somebody else feel good today.’ ” Fun-loving as she seems, DeGeneres, 53, also means business. Oprah Winfrey’s departure from the TV talk-show scene earlier this year prompted a serious landgrab, with Rosie O’Donnell, Katie Couric, and even Anderson Cooper staking claims. So where does that leave Ellen? “On top!” she jokes, though she doesn’t like to think in terms of competition. Now in its ninth season, her syndicated show, which has won 35

daytime Emmys, had its best season-premiere week ever in September. “I think we’ll get a new audience that maybe didn’t watch me because they only watched Oprah, and they have a void now,” says DeGeneres, who notes that her show has taken over Oprah’s afternoon time slot in a number of important markets. “But it’s the same goal whether we have 10 people or 10 million people watching. If we adjust in any way, it’s so we can top ourselves.” And that’s just her day job. DeGeneres’s year-old record company, eleveneleven, has already launched one rising star— 14-year-old Greyson Chance, whom one of her staffers discovered last year on YouTube—and three more young singers are warbling in the wings. She’s just released Seriously … I’m Kidding, her third book of short takes on topics both humorous and heartfelt, to warm reviews. And she’s putting those piercing blue eyes to good use representing CoverGirl & Olay Simply Ageless Foundation—an unexpected role that amuses her to no end: “Yes, I wake up every day with a fan blowing on my

Or even some of the time, for that matter. Her decision to leave American Idol after just one season was, in part, because “it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings,” she said at the time. But there was also some nastiness behind the scenes that she found off-putting. “It was disappointing to hear things about the kids, the drama going on,” she says. “Some of them are not as grateful as you would expect. All of a sudden they have fan mail, millions of people saying they’re great, and some of them just stop appreciating it.” The mild, baffled observations at the heart of DeGeneres’s comedy routines are intentionally zinger-free. “I don’t like to make fun of people,” she says. “It’s a form of bullying. I’ve been the butt of jokes before—a punch line—and that just gave me more fuel to say I will never do it.” The ability to be compassionate, emotional, and still laugh-out-loud funny is her secret sauce, says her friend Harry Connick Jr., a frequent guest on her show. “She is exactly like she is on TV—and I know that’s a cliché,” he says. “She really is a good person who cares for people. and simple as that the reason someone is so popular.” Like most idealists, DeGeneres has had her letdowns. She admits there can be a disconnect between the regard some of her fans show for her and the way they view the world at large. Recalling one encounter she had with a girl and her mother, she says, “The mother seemed really excited to meet me, and said, ‘I’d love to meet Portia.’ But when the girl was alone with me, she said that she was gay, and that her mother calls her [an offensive term]. I couldn’t believe it: This was the woman who was just asking about Portia. Some people seem to be okay with me being gay, as long as it’s ‘not my kid,’ and that just makes me sad. It really is the last accepted prejudice.” DeGeneres’s own family was more understanding when she came out at age 18. “If anything, it was a shock to me,” she says. “I’d always known that I had crushes on girls, but I also liked boys—though I wasn’t drawn to them romantically. For me to get in touch with myself enough to recognize that I was gay, and then not to stay private about it, was a huge step.” Now, she believes, it’s her authenticity that’s giving her staying power. “I think I’m just very real, and people sense that,” she says. “They know everything about me. This is a platform that’s probably more powerful than politics, and I think if you have a loud voice, you should use it for good.”

corner in midtown Manhattan in September, two old friends have come together to mark an anniversary of sorts. “This is where we met,” says Maurice Mazyck, 37. “Wait, wasn’t it further up the block?” asks Laura Schroff, 60. They finally settle on a spot and hug. “Sometimes,” says Mazyck, “I wonder if I would be here at all if you hadn’t done what you did.” It was there on Monday, Sept. 1, 1986, that Mazyck, then a skinny 11-year-old in grimy sweats and sneakers, stuck out his hand as Schroff walked by. Thirtyfive at the time and a successful newspaper executive, Schroff lived just two blocks away from Mazyck in New York City, but their homes might as well have been on different planets—he lived in a welfare hotel, she in a luxury high-rise. “Excuse me, lady, do you have any spare change?” he asked, hoping to buy some food. Schroff didn’t answer and kept going. But then, just a few steps later, she stopped, turned, and came back. Instead of giving the boy money, she took him to lunch at McDonald’s. He got a Big Mac, fries, and a chocolate shake that day—and the two of them wound up with an extraordinary friendship that has changed both their lives. “Of all the achievements in my life,” says Schroff, who

spent three decades in advertising sales before retiring in 2009, “there is nothing that makes me prouder than to call Maurice my friend.” In 1986, the hungry child Schroff encountered was already trapped in a cycle of poverty, drugs, and violence. His father, a gang member, left when Maurice was 6; his mother was a heroin and crack addict. He had never known an adult who held a full-time job, and he’d received only two presents in his young life: a toy truck and a joint. Still, Mazyck, who today owns a small construction firm, says, “I know my mother did the best she could.”

had on Mazyck is only half the story. “When people tell me how lucky Maurice was,” she says, “I tell them, ‘I was the lucky one.’” She, too, had a turbulent childhood. Her father had a drinking problem and often hit her mother and brother. Schroff vowed that when she had kids, they would always feel safe. With Mazyck, Schroff could try to repair some of the damage in his life that she couldn’t go back and fix in her own. And in the process he helped her see what truly matters. to make easy money selling drugs, as so many men in his family had done, but he resisted. “Because of Laura, I made the right decisions.” He finally called Schroff in 2000 after his mother died. “I told her, ‘You are my mother now.’ ” She bore him no grudge for his absence. “I’d never given up on Maurice,” she says. When Schroff helped the boy she met on the street get a shot at a better future, she was extending that same opportunity to his kids. Today Mazyck is a proud husband and father, and he and his wife have seven children, ages 4 to 19. He and Schroff see each other at least once a month. When she visits his New York City apartment, his kids swarm over their “Aunt Laurie.” “I have my own family,” says Schroff, who has three siblings and five nieces and nephews, “but they are my family, too.” Back in 1986, Schroff took Mazyck to her sister’s house in the suburbs. For the first time, he sat down for a meal with her family at a large dining-room table. “To me, it was magical. I told them when I grew up, I’d have a big table in my home,” he says. True to his word, he now owns a huge dinner table, where he and his big, noisy family—and his friend Laura—eat and talk and count their blessings. Alex Tresniowski is the coauthor of An Invisible Thread, on sale Nov. 1. The book tells the story of Schroff’s and Mazyck’s unlikely 25-year-long friendship.

Busy’s Tips

Busy Philipps of TV’s Cougar Town serves her daughter this fun classic

P “We’d always beat the egg whites with an electric mixer. That’s why the waffles came out so fluffy.”

My great-grandmother, who was known as Nana, passed away before I was born, but she and my mother were very, very close. For as long as I can remember, we made Nana’s waffles in my house. It was a weekend tradition. My sister needed to fill every hole in the waffle with syrup; I was more free-form. And you know those little crispy waffle edges? We called those “poodle pieces” because my parents would feed them to our dog, Harrison. He would eat them only if they had butter on them. If not, he’d walk away! I’m trying to raise my daughter, Birdie, to be more health-conscious. I give her organic syrup and a bowl of fruit. She calls raspberries “fingerberries” because she puts them on her fingertips. She doesn’t know the delight that is Log Cabin.

P “Before you use the iron for the first time, season it with shortening. You have to get it into every nook and cranny. One tip I learned from my mom is to spread it around with a paper towel.”

P “You want the iron really hot so the waffle cooks beautifully and easily.”

Nana’s Never-Fail Waffles 2 eggs 1 cup milk 1 cup flour 1 tsp sugar ¼ tsp salt 2 tsp baking powder ¼ cup vegetable oil

1. Preheat a waffle iron (follow manufacturer’s instructions). 2. Separate eggs and whip whites until soft peaks form. In a bowl, blend yolks, milk, flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. 3. Add vegetable oil, making sure not to overmix. 4. Fold in egg whites and mix well with a fork or whisk. 5. Lightly oil waffle iron. Pour in about ½ cup batter. Close iron and cook according to instructions. Repeat with remaining batter.
