THE SCENE:

Austin’s legendary Driskill Hotel was the setting for a birthday that honored one of the nation’s most beloved citizens from a stellar family legacy. The 70th birthday party of former First Daughter Luci Baines Johnson attracted 250 of the city’s social elite, while doubling as a fundraiser to something that is near and dear to the Johnson family – conservation and preservation.

The Texas-casual attire was on full display by the guests whose cocktail dresses mixed seamlessly with cowboy hats. The evening began with a cocktail hour in the hotel’s ballroom where those near and dear to Johnson traded memorable stories about her and the former First Family. The festivities then continued at the mezzanine, where partygoers enjoyed a delicious meal and were treated to the evening’s program, which included a reading by author Liz Garton Scanlon, words from Barton Springs Conservancy President Michael Cannatti and a birthday toast by Austin mayor Steve Adler as the guest of honor blew out a birthday cake gleaming with luminous candles.
