The Power of Strategic Planning:

How Your Input Helps Shape the ISVMA

Strategic planning is more than just setting goals. It is a detailed process that helps our organization identify opportunities, address challenges, and establish objectives that support our longterm vision. Our Board of Directors is using input from our membership to create several areas, or pillars, that we would like to focus on for the coming years. These pillars include: Advocacy Community Lifelong Learning Public Engagement and Partnerships Innovation

On June 10th, your ISVMA Board of Directors met to begin creating a new strategic plan and to review the ISVMA mission and vision statements. What is a strategic plan you ask? And why is it important to you?

A strategic plan is the road map our organization uses to guide decision making and set priorities. We use the plan to help allocate resources to areas where they will do the most good. It helps ensure that our resources, programs, and initiatives align with the goals and expectations of our membership. A good strategic plan should provide a clear path for ISVMA success!

One of the most important elements of our strategic planning process is member engagement.

Our organization exists to serve its members, and the most effective way to understand member needs is to listen directly to them. Through member surveys, feedback sessions, committee discussions, and other opportunities for input, we gather information about the issues, priorities, and concerns that are most important to our members. This information is then used to guide the creation process. Member input tells us where the organization is performing well as well as identifying areas where we can improve.

Member engagement is crucial because it ensures that our strategic plan reflects the voice of our membership. When members share their perspectives and ideas, they help shape the direction of programs, advocacy efforts, educational opportunities, and other organizational priorities. Their involvement helps create a plan that is not only supported by leadership but also driven by the people who have the greatest stake in the organization's success.

As we continue developing our new strategic plan, we encourage our membership to continue providing feedback whenever possible.

ISVMA PRESIDENT Kate Brucker, DVM Meet Dr. Kate Brucker, Associate Veterinarian at Albin Animal Hospital and County Veterinarian for Douglas County/Douglas County Animal Shelter. With 16 years of experience in veterinary practice, Dr. Brucker’s heart is dedicated to both shelter work and general practice. She’s especially passionate about population control through TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) and loves fostering bottle baby kittens (we can’t blame her!).

Center for Zoonoses Research: A Renewed Commitment to One Health

Leaders of the Center for Zoonoses Research: scientific co-directors Dr. Ying Fang and Dr. Brenda Wilson (Dr. Gireesh Rajashekara was unable to attend the kickoff); Dean Peter Constable, director of CZR; and Dr. Julie Nguyen-Edquilang, program manager.

By 1960, human brucellosis had declined dramatically from its peak of 6,321 U.S. cases in 1947, thanks to coordinated efforts among government, farmers, veterinarians, and physicians. But many zoonotic diseases remained: Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Chagas disease, and Trichinosis to name just a few.

At the time, zoonotic disease research often existed in a “no man’s land” between human and veterinary medicine. It was in this context that our college established the Center for Zoonoses Research on a forward-thinking premise: complex health challenges require expertise across disciplines—from veterinary and human medicine to ecology, epidemiology, meteorology, sociology, and beyond.

That premise is even more relevant today. Recent threats such as cryptosporidiosis, West Nile virus, COVID-19, hantavirus, highly pathogenic avian influenza, and antimicrobial resistance underscore how essential coordinated responses are for protecting both public health and the agricultural systems veterinarians support every day.

To meet these challenges, the college is reinvigorating the Center for Zoonoses Research with new leadership and renewed focus. Earlier this year, we named three scientific co-directors: Dr. Ying Fang, distinguished professor specializing in diagnostic testing and vaccine development Dr. Gireesh Rajashekara, Associate Dean for research and advanced studies Dr. Brenda Wilson, professor of microbiology In April, a kickoff event brought together faculty members and trainees to highlight work across the four core research areas in CZR: Emerging pathogens and diagnostic technologies Microbial and data science Vaccines, therapeutics, and disease models Food safety and antimicrobial resistance

Their presentations demonstrated how CZR connects discovery to real-world health outcomes— advancing tools and knowledge that ultimately support veterinary practice, public health, and food system resilience.

As Dr. Rajashekara noted, “Our work spans the One Health spectrum, recognizing that human, animal, and environmental health are deeply interconnected. Whether mitigating zoonotic risks, improving diagnostics, or addressing antimicrobial resistance, CZR aims to deliver practical solutions for society.”

Next steps for CZR include expanding its ranks. Researchers within the University of Illinois and beyond are invited to apply for membership. The center will provide an overarching framework for dynamic interdisciplinary research, with priority given to training and mentorship of the next generation of researchers who will tackle global health challenges.

Dr. Peter D. Constable, BVSc (Hons), MS, PhD, DACVIM is the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois, where he has led since 2014. An internationally renowned scholar, his research spans multiple species and disciplines, and he is the lead author of Veterinary Medicine, the most heavily cited veterinary textbook.

With over 270 peer-reviewed articles, he has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Kirk Award for Professional Excellence.

USDA Accreditation Training Courses There are no additional fees to participate in the training, and enrollment is open to all. However, pre-registration by accredited veterinarians is mandatory for training credit. The class maximum for each course is 60.

USDA Accreditation Program Training Courses - Part of this Year’s Convention Under the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) revised National Veterinary Accreditation Program, accreditation status expires every three years. As a requirement of renewal, each participating veterinarian must complete the mandated three or six hours of continuing education provided specifically by the USDA. The training/educational materials can be presented live or found online. When completed at the ISVMA Annual Convention, the participating veterinarian receives credit for completing the necessary CE for renewal of his or her accreditation status. This CE also counts toward DVM license renewal.

DVM and CVT Student Members Students attending the ISVMA Annual Convention are welcome at any of the sessions presented. Students may attend one Annual Convention at no charge once during their veterinary school career.

To attend at no charge, contact the ISVMA Office at (217) 546-8381 to register. A credit card number or a check is required for students who are taking advantage of their complimentary registration.

The ISVMA will hold all forms of payment. Credit Cards will not be charged; checks will not be cashed. If the student does not check-in at convention registration, al forms of payment will be processed. No-shows will be charged.

Cancellation Policy 1. Cancellation Deadline: Registrations for the ISVMA Convention can be cancelled until 5 p.m.

CST on September 26, 2026.

2. Refund Details: a. Cancellations made by 5 p.m. CST on September 26, 2026: Full refund minus a $50 processing fee. b. Cancellations after 5 p.m., September 26, 2026 and by 5 p.m. CST on October 23, 2026: 50% refund of registration fee minus a $50 processing fee. c. Cancellations after 5 p.m. on October 23, 2026: No refunds will be issued.

3. Substitution Policy: Registrants may substitute another person from the same company or organization by notifying us in writing at least 15 days before the event.

4. Exceptional Circumstances: In cases of documented medical reasons, family death or family emergencies, refunds considered on a case-by-case basis.

Bidding opens on Friday, November 6 at 9:15 a.m. and closes at 5:30 p.m. Continue the bidding war throughout Saturday, November 7 in the Exhibit Hall from 8:00 am until 1:00 p.m. The auction will conclude at 1:00 p.m. and all winning bids will be finalized. Keynote Speaker This year’s ISVMA’s Annual Convention features a full neurology track and a keynote address from Fred Wininger, VMD MS DACVIM (Neurology).

Dr. Wininger is a board-certified veterinary neurologist and neurosurgeon and the founder of the Animal Neurology Center in St. Louis, a single-specialty hospital built around a modern model that integrates advanced clinical care, education, and innovation. He is adjunct professor at the University of Missouri and owner/operator of 3D Veterinary Printing LLC. His primary interests are MR neuroimaging, spinal stabilization and the interface of primary care veterinarians and specialists, bridging the knowledge and collegiality gaps through pragmatic approaches to complex topics.

Known for his expertise in diagnostic imaging and surgical treatment of complex neurologic disease, he has a reputation for making the unfamiliar understandable and helping clients and colleagues face frightening, complex conditions with clarity and confidence.

He is deeply committed to education, training veterinary students from multiple universities, founding the novel hybrid neurology residency with the University of Missouri, and creating immersive continuing education experiences for practicing veterinarians at the ANC. Dr. Wininger often says he went into veterinary medicine because he loves animals, but fell in love with the profession because of the people who care for them.

He also advises colleagues building independent practices grounded in integrity and staff fulfillment, while partnering with industry to help bring the next generation of veterinary diagnostic and therapeutics through converting human technologies into clinical practice.

It also covers the potential animal, human and financial impacts associated with an incursion of New World Screwworm.

This module provides the accredited veterinarian with information about the functionality of the Veterinary Export Health Certification System (VEHCS). It demonstrates the extent to which it can be used and describes how to access and use the VEHCS.

Here are four scheduling scripts that get callers to book now: 1. SICK PET APPOINTMENTS

2. URGENT CARE APPOINTMENTS

A few caring words will comfort clients when you’re scheduling sick pet appointments. Use names for a personal connection. Lead callers to schedule now rather than take a wait-andsee approach. Offer the next two openings with yes-or-yes phrasing.

Urgent care appointments provide same-day care for non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries and do not require overnight hospitalization or advanced critical care. Preblock four to six urgent care slots in each outpatient doctor’s daily schedule. If urgent care exam fees are higher, scripting can help CSRs show value.

Say, “[Client name], we want to help [pet name] feel better. Our next available appointments are [date, time 1] and [date, time 2]. Which do you prefer?”

After booking, have a supportive closing.

Say, “We will see you and [pet name] for a sick pet appointment on [date, time]. You’ll get an appointment confirmation today with a link to our online sick pet form. Completing it ahead of time will help the doctor prepare for [pet name]’s visit. I’m also adding you to our wait list in case we have a cancellation and an earlier appointment opens.”

Say, “Based on symptoms you’ve described, a veterinarian needs to examine [pet name] today. We keep a few same-day urgent care appointments for pets needing more immediate care, and your situation qualifies.

Our urgent care exam fee is $__. The doctor will walk you through the next steps, explain any tests or treatment, and provide a treatment plan with services and fees for your approval before moving forward. We have urgent care openings today at [date, time 1] or [date, time 2]. Which do you prefer?”

3. WELLNESS APPOINTMENTS Access the medical record to identify which services and medications are due and choose the right appointment type and length. An adult pet may have a 20-minute wellness appointment while a senior pet needs a 30-minute visit to allow time for senior diagnostics.

“Can I get your phone number so I can look up your account?” may unintentionally make callers feel processed. Instead, engage callers by asking and repeating their names.

Say, “I'd be happy to schedule your pet’s appointment. May I have your name and your pet’s name so I may access the medical record?”

After reviewing the record, give a brief overview of services and products due instead of detailing every vaccine. Long lists can create hesitation to schedule.

Say, “I see in [pet name]’s medical record that he/she is due for an exam, vaccines, diagnostic tests, and preventive refills.”

Ask about health or behavior concerns. This question leads clients to share concerns upfront, which may shift the appointment from a wellness to sick pet visit. Doctors also will avoid getting blindsided with, “Could you also check…?

Say, “Does your pet have any health or behavior concerns that you want to discuss with the doctor?”

Summarize details when closing. Set client expectations to get a confirmation text or email.

Say, “We have scheduled <pet name> for a wellness appointment with Dr. [Name] at [date, time].

Please bring a stool sample for an intestinal parasite screen. You’ll get a text/email confirmation shortly with a link to an online patient form to complete and submit before the appointment. We look forward to seeing you and [pet name].”

4. NEW CLIENT APPOINTMENTS Phone shopper calls are worth thousands to your practice. Engagement ensures you capture every new client opportunity. Ask for the caller’s name and name of pet immediately after, “How much is…?”

This is the first step in getting to know the caller and identifying the patient’s medical so you can quote accurate fees. Have a friendly, engaging conversation—not a spiel.

Say, “I’m happy to share information. May I ask your name and your pet’s/baby’s name? Then I will ask questions about your puppy to determine what it will need.”

Ask questions to tailor which medical services you’ll explain and quote. Sharing just vaccine costs will have you underquote the first visit—missing the exam, intestinal parasite screen, deworming, parasite preventives, and other services. Ask questions such as: How old is your puppy?

What breed is your puppy? (This lets you tailor vaccine protocols for dogs that will go to groomers or hunting.)

Where did you adopt [puppy name]? (shelter, breeder, stray) Which vaccines has your puppy had, and when were they given? (Lets you identify the timing of when the next vaccines will be due, so you know when to book the appointment.)

Have you seen any fleas, or has [puppy name] been scratching?

Which flea/tick and heartworm protection are you using?

Has [puppy name] been spayed/neutered?

Do you have other pets at home?

Based on the caller’s answers, describe which services and products the pet will need.

Explain services first, saving fees for last to create perception of value.

Lead the caller to book now with the yes-oryes technique. Have an enticing offer such as a new patient gift of vendor-donated items.

Say, “[Pet name] will get a baby gift on the first visit, which includes a free dose of flea/tick and heartworm prevention, a leash, a sample bag of puppy food, handouts on training, a vaccine record-keeper, a pet food measuring cup, treats for training, and 30 days of free pet insurance. This baby gift is valued at $100. When can we meet you and [pet name]? Our next available appointments are [date, time 1] or [date, time 2]. Which do you prefer?”

Who Needs a DEA Registration?

While having a DEA registration is not required to practice veterinary medicine, not having a DEA registration limits your ability to practice veterinary medicine with controlled substances.

You spent countless hours (and money) in veterinary medical school.

Graduation day comes, you receive your veterinary medical license, and it’s finally time to put that time and money into actual practice. As a licensed veterinarian you can now legally practice veterinary medicine.

When it comes to the use of controlled substances in veterinary medicine; however, do you also need a DEA registration? If you work as a veterinarian in more than one facility, or in facilities across multiple states, how many DEA registrations do you need?

What is a DEA Registration?

A DEA registration is separate from a state medical license as well as a state-issued controlled substance license.

A DEA registration is a specific number issued by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to qualified individuals and entities granting legal authority to prescribe, dispense, distribute, manufacture, import, export, reverse distribute, or conduct research with controlled substances (Schedules I-V) and/or DEA listed chemicals.

Qualifying individuals and entities include licensed healthcare providers (practitioners/clinics/hospitals), pharmacies, institutions, manufacturers, narcotic treatment programs, laboratories, researchers, reverse distributors etc.

DEA registrations are categorized according to the type of activity being conducted with controlled substances or DEA listed chemicals, and separate DEA registrations are required for each separate activity and registered location.

The majority of veterinarians applying for a DEA registration apply for a practitioner registration.

A DEA practitioner registration is specific to the individual it is issued to, and authorizes that individual to legally prescribe, dispense, and order controlled substances at one DEA-registered location.

Who needs a DEA Registration?

Whether or not a DEA registration is necessary is a common area of confusion for veterinarians. A DEA registration is not required to practice veterinary medicine; however, without a DEA registration veterinarians are limited in the activities they can conduct with controlled substances. Specifically, a DEA registration is required for the following:

Ordering A DEA registration is required to order and maintain a controlled substance inventory. The address used to register with the DEA is the official DEA-registered location where a registrant may order and store an inventory. DEA registrants are permitted one registered location per DEA registration. While DEA registrants may designate authorized individuals as agents to place controlled substance orders on their behalf, the authority to order is granted to DEA registrants alone. If you have a DEA practitioner registration, ordering rights belong to you, not the facility you may work at even if the name of the facility is listed on your DEA registration.

Prescribing A DEA registration is required to prescribe controlled substances. The prescribing authority granted under a DEA practitioner registration is not delegable. The DEA regulates the prescribing of controlled substances. DEA practitioner registrants may authorize qualified individuals under them to work with their controlled substance inventory at their registered location as long as they are adhering to DEA and state supervision requirements; however, the right to prescribe that a DEA registration grants a practitioner registrant is not delegable. A DEA practitioner registration only gives the right to prescribe to the DEA practitioner it was issued to. Prescribing rights cannot be delegated to someone else.

In-House Dispensing The practice of veterinary medicine often involves in-house dispensing of controlled substances from a registrant’s inventory for patients instead of having a prescription filled by an outside pharmacy. Many aspects of veterinary medicine are not outlined in federal regulations. In-house dispensing for patients differentiates veterinary medicine from human medicine and has led to debates about who is permitted to in-house dispense medications for patients to take home in a veterinary facility. A prescription is required to in-house dispense controlled substances from a DEA-registrant’s inventory. Like prescribing, dispensing is a DEA-regulated activity that requires a DEA registration; therefore, in-house dispensing of controlled substances for patients to take home should be conducted by an individual with a DEA registration.

What controlled substance activities can veterinarians perform without a DEA registration? In a hospital or practice setting, licensed veterinarians may legally administer controlled substances as an authorized agent working under another DEA registrant. This includes fulfilling other duties that coincide with administering such as ensuring the administration is properly logged, any waste is wasted with a witness and documented etc. Keep in mind that administration of controlled substances must always be conducted in adherence to state supervision requirements as well.

How Many DEA Registrations Do You Need?

Many veterinarians today are practicing in more than one location. Whether you provide relief services or work for a group with multiple facilities, how many DEA registrations one needs is a question that often arises. The number of DEA registrations required boils down to your controlled substance activities and the locations they are conducted.

The following list provides veterinary practice example scenarios along with the number of DEA registrations required: Prescribing only, working in one state: If you only prescribe controlled substances and work at multiple veterinary facilities in one state, you only need one DEA registration.

Prescribing only, working in multiple states: If you only prescribe controlled substances and work at multiple veterinary facilities in multiple states, you need a DEA registration for each state you practice in.

Ordering, one location: If you order and maintain a controlled substance inventory at one location only, you only need one DEA registration.

Ordering, multiple locations: If you order and maintain a controlled substance inventory at multiple locations, you need a separate DEA registration for each location you are ordering and maintaining an inventory at. Controlled substance inventory cannot be “shared” between locations.

Ordering, one location, patients in multiple locations: since the passing of the Veterinary Mobility Act of 2014, veterinarians may transport and dispense controlled substances at locations other than their DEA-registered location when treating their own patients with their own controlled substance inventory during the usual course of business. This includes crossing state lines. Therefore, a veterinarian with one DEA registration ordering a controlled substance inventory to a single practice location, may legally transport controlled substances off premises for patient treatment during the usual course of business.

DEA Registrant Responsibilities You may have heard the phrase, “A DEA registration is a privilege, not a right.” Going to veterinary medical school does not entitle you to a DEA registration. The DEA gives qualified individuals the privilege of a DEA registration, and that privilege can also be taken away if not properly managed.

As a DEA registrant, you are responsible for ensuring that your required state license(s) and DEA registration are kept current and accurate. Stay current on your renewals. If you move or have an address change, make sure you update your state licenses first and then your DEA registration. As a DEA registrant with the privilege of prescribing, you are also responsible for adhering to all applicable prescribing and dispensing laws at the federal and state level where you practice as well as for ensuring the security of your prescription pads.

Ordering DEA & Protecting Your Registration If you use your DEA registration to order controlled substances, you are personally responsible for everything that happens with the controlled substances in your inventory in the eyes of the DEA. It does not matter who paid the invoice for the controlled substances, who dispensed/administered them to treat a patient, or if an issue occurred and you were not present.

As an ordering DEA registrant of record, you are responsible to provide effective controls and procedures to guard against theft and diversion of controlled substances.1 That is the first regulation in the list of general security requirements in Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations. Some DEA security requirements are very specific, and others are vague. At the end of the day, the DEA expects registrants maintaining an inventory to take whatever measures are necessary to protect those controlled substances from being diverted for illicit purposes.

As part of responsibilities to guard and protect a controlled substance inventory, ordering DEA Registrants are responsible for: 1.Secure storage of controlled substances.

2.Ensuring physical security and access controls at the registered location.

3.Maintaining all required records per 21 CFR 13042 4.Vetting and qualifying any individuals they authorize to work with their controlled substance inventory.

5.Proper wasting, disposal and destruction of controlled substances.

6.Secure storage of any DEA Form-222s and/or DEA Controlled Substance ordering System (CSOS) credentials and prescription pads.

7.Adhering to DEA and state reporting requirements (theft/loss reporting, prescription drug monitoring programs as applicable etc.)

Protecting Your DEA Registration As a DEA registrant you have the privilege of ordering controlled substances, which is something a lot of companies, organizations and facilities need. Before using your DEA registration to order a controlled substance inventory, make sure you fully understand the responsibilities that come with it. Always properly vet and authorize any individuals you allow to work with your controlled substance inventory under you. Remember, as a DEA registrant you are 100% responsible for everything that happens with the controlled substances in your inventory. The DEA registrant is the legal owner of all controlled substances ordered under their DEA registration number ,regardless of who paid the invoice. As a DEA registrant you are legally responsible for protecting your inventory and cannot delegate this responsibility to anyone else.

Ensuring the protection of your controlled substances inventory is ultimately your protection professionally.

LEGISLATIVE SUMMARY

Illinois Legislature Completes Spring Session The $55.9 billion budget is mostly a flat budget with modest increases in a few areas. To support revenue, they closed a loophole on corporate taxes, taxed social media companies and moved money from the road fund to the general revenue fund. No service tax on professional services was included.

In addition to the budget package, the General Assembly passed almost four hundred pieces of legislation this Spring. With direction from the ISVMA leadership, your lobbyists monitored 10,000 bills and amendments introduced by the General Assembly. The issues ranged from further regulation of animal testing, practice ownership, medical waste and special advocates for animals in criminal cases.

CVT’s Authorized to Administer Rabies Vaccine Legislation was introduced to increase capacity for rabies vaccinations at shelters by allowing unlicensed people to administer the rabies vaccination. For the safety and protection of the animals and protection of the public, ISVMA opposed any language that would have allowed any unlicensed or non-medical volunteers from being authorized to administer the rabies vaccine.

ISVMA worked with legislators and stakeholders to pass a bill that allows certified veterinary technicians in the state, with appropriate training, to provide rabies vaccinations under the direct supervision of a veterinarian. This change recognizes the vital role CVTs play in animal health while ensuring public safety.

Key highlights: Veterinarian exam required before vaccination CVTs must complete a 2-hour rabies vaccination course every CE cycle Direct supervision by a DVM Dual signatures on rabies certificates The legislation passed both chambers of the legislature and was signed into law by the governor.

The legislation will be effective January 1, 2027. ISVMA appreciates Representative Kelly Cassidy’s leadership in advancing this initiative.

ISVMA Opposed to Non-Veterinarian Practice Ownership ISVMA stood in opposition to Senate Bill 2096 regarding ownership of veterinary practices. The bill would have allowed non-veterinarians to own, operate, and control veterinary practices outside of current statute. That would pose significant risks to animal welfare, professional accountability, and consumer protection. ISVMA leadership met with the legislative sponsor to convey our position. The bill stalled after never being called for a vote in committee.

LEGISLATIVE SUMMARY “Twice Swipe” Credit Card Law Delayed Illinois passed a first-in-the-nation law called the Interchange Fee Prohibition Act (IFPA) which would have banned banks and credit card companies from charging transaction "swipe fees" on the sales tax and tip portions of purchases. Lawmakers have twice delayed the implementation of the law and the law has now been blocked by a federal judge.

Banking and financial groups argued that modern payment processing systems were not designed to separate taxes/tips from the base price of an item. To comply with the law, they stated they might have to force customers to literally swipe their cards twice: once for the goods, and a separate time for the tax and tip.

ISVMA Opposes Fee Increase ISVMA sent an official correspondence to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation expressing opposition to the Proposed Administrative Rule to increase fees for the Illinois Controlled Substances Registration, which would raise the initial registration fee from $5 to $100 (20 times the current cost) and the annual renewal fee from $5 to $50 (ten times the current cost).

Increasing the cost of maintaining this licensure has several consequences including added financial pressure on veterinary practices and potential impact on client costs and access to care.

While the spring 2026 session of the 104th General Assembly concluded on June 1, they will return to Springfield for the fall veto session the week before and after Thanksgiving. That session is expected to be followed with a “lame duck” session sometime between January 1-12, 2027. Your legislative team will track any of the legislation that may impact your profession during these additional dates.

Local Advocacy Join ISVMA for Meetings with Lawmakers in Your Community. Your legislative team is planning in district, in person meetings with legislators to bring our message directly to them. Please consider joining your lobbyists in your community to get to know your legislators and educate them on the valuable work you provide to advance the health of beloved animals and protect the public.

If you’re not able to join your advocacy team during a local legislative meeting, please consider inviting legislators to your clinic so that they can see you and your staff in action.

Dr. H. David Clayton, DVM January 2, 1939 - May 22, 2026 Dr. H. David Clayton, affectionately known to many as “Doc Clayton,” passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, dedication, and quiet strength that touched many lives.

“Doc” devoted his life to veterinary medicine.

He spent over 40 years with Glen Ellyn Animal Hospital, where his dedication, compassion, and work ethic were unmatched. Respected throughout the community, he built lasting relationships and touched the lives of countless pets, families, and colleagues alike.

He enjoyed golfing, exercising at the YMCA, watching old westerns, and his nightly bowl of popcorn. A dedicated martial artist, he also earned a black belt in Taekwondo.

Dr. Clayton was a member of the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association (ISVMA).

Memorial donations may be made to The BR Ryall YMCA or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Above all, he cherished his family. He took great pride in attending his grandchildren’s games, school events, and activities.

His love and devotion to his family will be forever remembered.

QUICK TIP Can a hospital generating $3M in revenue only be worth its tangible assets?

The short answer is YES! And hereʼs why…

The value of a profitable hospital is largely driven by the profit it generates. You have probably heard that a practice is worth X times its profit or EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization). Generally, its value will be between 3-6 times the EBITDA and more commonly 4-5 times.

What happens when there is no profit, in other words, the hospital is operating at a net loss?

A negative profit figure (net loss) times 4-5 is going to be an even bigger negative number.

Obviously, a negative value is invalid because there are assets that can be seen and touched (tangible assets).

When the hospital is operating at a net loss, the value becomes Asset Value – the value of its tangible assets. Tangible assets are the inventory and equipment. The equipment is valued at its current used state, not what was originally paid for it.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to see hospitals with high revenues, like $3M, operating at a net loss. This is how the value of a hospital grossing that much ends up being tangible asset value.
