Dear Den, Dear Den, I am the mother of a very active 2 year old and a new born. While I believe I am a very conscientious mum, attending parent craft classes, reading child rearing books and generally focusing all of my energy on bringing up my children right, I think I might still be a bad mother. At least, that is what some people on the High Street have said. As mentioned, my 2 year-old son is a high energy, inquisitive boy who loves to explore and run about. He refuses to hold my hand or the baby’s pushchair while we are out so, I have decided to use child reigns with him. This way, he has a bit of freedom but he will not wander off or hurt himself. Last week, while doing a bit of shopping in Basntead, I had two older woman at different times come up to me and tell me that it was terrible to use reigns on a child. Well, as you can image, I was distraught. Not only was I doing something wrong with my son, I was angry and upset that these women felt it was Ok to tell me, a perfect stranger, how to raise my child. I really want to do the right thing for my son, but I also don’t want others to think I am a bad mother. What is the best solution to my dilemma? Mediocre Mum Dear Mediocre Mum, Firstly, Let’s refer to you as Marvelous Mum instead! From what you have told me, you are doing a brilliant job at raising your children. You are conscientious and aware of potential dangers, but have the confidence to encourage your son to explore and use his imagination. Having a new born complicates matters even further through lack of sleep and divided loyalties.

14

Therefore, I applaud your use of reigns with your child. Furthermore, I detest the fact that any stranger had the audacity to pass judgment on someone clearly doing their best for their child. Dear Den, Is it ever acceptable to make a negative comment about someone’s cooking at a dinner party? Hungry Hank Dear Hungry Hank, It is never, NEVER appropriate to make anything other than positive comments to someone who has taken the time to cook for you. Dear Den, My boyfriend has really sticky out ears. He does not seem to be bothered by them, but I am. How can I suggest that he have something done about them? Bothered Bethany Dear Bothered Bethany, Ask him to join you when you go to the plastic surgeon for that unnecessary nose job.

If you have a question for Dear Den, please send your letters to our email: info@sm7-magazine.co.uk

Spotlight on a local….STAR Sponsored by The SM7 Local Star award traditionally goes to an individual for their work in the community, but the April/May award goes to an extremely dedicated team of people who have been offering a free service to Banstead since August 1982. The Banstead Citizens Advice Bureau, based in The Horseshoe, has no fewer than 28 volunteers a week, advising local people on a wide variety of issues, including; employment, housing, benefits and debt management. Legal changes, new criteria for eligibility, uncertainty in employment, or sometimes just the sheer scale and pace of change in many areas of life keep the team on their toes.

Mandy Impey & Helen Howe Two members of the CAB team

In this column it’s impossible to do complete justice to the breadth of the CAB’s work as the Banstead Bureau alone saw in excess of 6,000 clients last year. Banstead CAB’s manager, Mrs Elaine Parr, says “The team ethic is very important to us and it would be impossible to pick one individual since everyone plays a valuable part. All volunteers undergo thorough training and never a week goes by without us being able to make a difference to someone and their family. Many people think that Banstead is a relatively affluent part of Surrey, but the challenges we face here are much the same as in any other part of the country. Last year, we received the Mayor’s award for services to the community”. Some of the volunteers work in the Financial Capability Team, specialising in debt management counselling (particularly important in times like these), while others visit Highdown Prison to offer prisoners advice and information - thereby indirectly helping to keep families together and cut down on reoffending after release. In addition, the CAB, allied with Healthwatch Surrey, helps to highlight cases of poor care in nursing homes or local medical centres. It also assists with evidencing areas of good practice in medical care so that these can be replicated elsewhere. The Bureau hosts regular sessions each week where local solicitors give a pro bono advice appointment to those who may need legal advice – especially valuable now following the huge reduction in legal aid. At a time when public spending is under ever increasing strain, the CAB team’s impartial, practical and confidential advice and information is invaluable work and a shining example of public service at its best. If you know of anyone who you think ‘fits the bill’ of Spotlight on a Star, please let us know. Every ‘Star’ receives a £25.00 gift voucher & a bouquet of flowers compliments of Waitrose Banstead as our way of saying thanks! Please send nominations to info@sm7-magazine.co.uk.

Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

April 2014 Someone dies from bowel cancer in the UK every thirty minutes. Seems unthinkable doesn't it, especially when it is very treatable when diagnosed and treated at an early stage.

The only problem is that only 9% of patients are diagnosed at the early stage. And that's where you come in. Help raise money for this important cause. You can either plan something of your own: maybe a fashion show, a bric-a-brac sale, a quiz night, or take part in a sponsored walk. For more ideas and information log onto

The Peasant in Suburbia A personal series on modern old-fashioned living by Oudeis Nemo NETTLE TEA “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways” is not an impertinent opening gambit to the common or garden nettle (we have previously done nettle soup, nettle wine, nettle beer). In case it has gone unnoticed I can confirm that I like the nettle – it really is the most fantastic plant, and not least in this simplest of uses. Nettle leaf is a well-respected food and tonic for vegetables (when properly decomposed), perhaps due to the plant’s extensive root system allowing it to absorb a greater quantity and/or variety of minerals and metals than many other plants. I would not wish to compare my reader(s) with vegetables, but what’s good for a cabbage might just benefit those amongst us who pride ourselves on being slightly higher up the evolutionary ladder than your average brassica. No medico I, but even the most cursory research suggests that the nettle has an impressive armoury of nutrients, micro- or otherwise, just waiting to aid and abet your system. Nettles are very easy to dry, and the dried leaves can be stored whole for use when it’s too cold and wet to forage for any. INGREDIENTS: Nettles, water. EQUIPMENT: Kettle and cup and spoon. METHOD: Pick fresh, bright nettle leaves. Remove any wildlife. Place a few leaves into a cup and pour over boiling water. Leave to stand for a minute or two, remove the greenery to the compost bin, and sip. IMPERATIVE: compare with shop bought. Nettles, in effect, cost nothing; whereas the bags, boxes, cellophane, printing, processing, marketing, haulage, advertising, shelf-space and till-tending of the commercial nettle tea can give the pocket a frightful whack. Fresh nettles might be picked fresh as wanted when in season, rather than being sanitised, dried, processed, pulverised, bagged and packaged as per the ‘nettle tea’ (little more than dust) on the supermarket shelf. SERVING SUGGESTION (apparently mandatory): when you are inexplicably not feeling 100%, have a cup of nettle tea, prepared as explained in detail above. It might not do you any physical good, but then again it might, and it will take your mind off things.

Next time: Melomel (look it up).
