THE SKINNY DIPPING REPORT A calendar and guide to swimming naked in beautiful places around the world.

2014

January

Photographer: Celia Gómez de Villavedón Location: Presa del Pradillo, Madrid Mountains, Spain

Spending a weekend in the mountains is one of the best parts of summer in Madrid. We took a day trip to one of the lakes in the mountains that isn’t too crowded. The lake isn’t very big, but it has such an amazing view. Alicia, one of my best friends, took off her clothes and jumped into the freezing water. When she came out, she sat next to me, and I wanted to immortalize that moment. Goosebumps.

Go To get to Embalse de la Presa del Pradillo, drive from Madrid towards Navacerrada. After Navacerrada, take the M-604 road until you see a small sign saying “Restaurante La Isla” in Rascafría. When you get to the restaurant, you must then go by foot and follow the small river to the right. The lake is only about 10 minutes from there.

Stay Bring a sleeping bag and rent a treetop bungalow at the Monte Holiday campgrounds.

Eat Pack a picnic filled with a Spanish omelette, salad, fried chicken, fruits, and snacks.

Drink Without a doubt sip on a “Tinto de Verano”, a sweet Spanish drink made with red wine and lemon soda. Drink with lots of ice and a slice of lemon, it’s the perfect refreshing drink for the occasion.

Photographer: Marielle Stobie Location: Seward Park, Seattle, WA, USA

I was shooting a music video for a friend’s band in the woods of Seward Park. The band’s singer had put on these grotesque rubber monster hands and was scaring our poor models in the darkness. We decided to call it quits for the day and began drinking on a nearby dock. After opening a couple bottles of Cook’s and a few Rainiers, we got pretty loose. What followed was all of us stripping down and jumping off the dock into Lake Washington. This was in February. While that was an incredibly exhilarating experience, from now on I’ll stick to skinny dipping in hot springs.

Go Stroll through the historic Pike Place Market, where you’ll find everything from veggie, cheese and fl ower stalls to crafts, photography, and textiles. Don’t miss the fl ying fish at its world famous fish market, where customer orders are hurled between the staff as they yell, chant and joke.

Stay Book a room at the Ace Hotel in Belltown. About a 20 minute drive from Seward Park, the Ace features minimalist hipster luxury brands like Stumptown Coffee and contemporary art from KAWS, Shepard Fairey, and more.

Eat Hit Lost Lake Cafe 24 hour diner in Capitol Hill afterward. You’ll probably turn heads walking in with wet hair, but at least you’ll have a good reason.

Drink If you skinny dip here, you’ll have to do it under the cover of night. Just bring a bottle of Chinook’s Cabernet Franc.

Photographer: Arnoldas Kubilius Location: Nida, Lithuania

I took this shot with a waterproof toy camera on one of several white-sand naturist beaches in Nida, a small Lithuanian resort and the westernmost point of the Baltic States. The wind was strong, the water was refreshing and my friend was overjoyed jumping in the waves.

Go Nida is located within the Curonian Spit, a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its sand dunes. Climb the 52m-high Parnidis Dune, which is the last shifting dune of the Isthmus. Both the Curonian lagoon and the Baltic Sea can be seen from the top of the dune.

Stay Ask for the deluxe room at the Naglis guesthouse for great views of the sea and an in-room sauna.

Eat Smoked eel is the most mouth-watering local specialty.

Drink Have a chilled local wheat beer, “baltas alus in Lithuanian, with a slice of lemon.

Photographer: Kozyndan Location: Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Our friend’s house and pool in the Hollywood Hills are usually empty during weekdays, so we pop over all the time and go for a swim the pool is always warm and the weather is always nice here. However, this particular day was eerie. There was a huge brush fire burning in mountains nearby and it was getting pretty close to the city. Winds were making the fire hard to fight, carrying the ash across the city and raining it down everywhere, including the swimming pool. It was strange and beautiful and awful all at the same time, so we swam naked.

Go Take in views of downtown Los Angeles atop The Music Box Steps between Vendome Street and Descano Drive. The spot is named after the scene in the 1932 Academy Award-winning Laurel and Hardy film where they tried to push a piano up the stairs.

Stay If you’re feeling an organic vibe, find your bliss at The Garden Cottage in Beverly Grove. The owners, Ahuva and Bob, are known for their fantastic organic breakfasts served in the garden. Try to get the Terrace Room if you can.

Eat Order the avocado sandwich at The Trails Café at the base of the Griffith Observatory trail - it’s delicious.

Drink For some tropical flavor, hit up Los Angeles’ oldest Tiki bar, Tiki-Ti, and try their signature drink, Ray’s Mistake.

A seeker of adventure and eternal exhibitionist, she jumped in. Eyes closed and surrounded by mountains, she found serenity in the Catskill Mountains.

Go Explore the many waterfalls and watering holes nearby – hike Shaft 2A to find a secluded swimming hole on top of a 70 foot waterfall. V

Stay Check into the Woodstock Inn on the Millstream, which is nestled in 3 acres of forest grounds. Their rooms and cottages offer a wide range of amenities, not to mention woodland tranquility.

Eat Grab some crab cakes at Joshua’s Cafe (51 Tinker Street).

Drink Pick up a Hudson Baby Bourbon for the trip!

Photographer: Hallie Herz Location: Wind River, Yukon, Canada

Some friends who had paddled the Wind River years before told us about a gorgeous glacially-formed lake a few kilometers’ hike west of the river. We found what we hoped was that lake on the map, and went for a hike. We climbed what felt like a hundred hills to find this absolute gem of a turquoise lake tucked into the mountains. We felt like we had stumbled upon something sacred, and we all took off our clothes and dove in, Susan first. I snapped this picture right before diving in myself. We stayed at the lake for as long as we could, and when we got back to our campsite, Susan’s chef husband cooked us up some three-cheese chipotle macaroni and our drink of the evening, Arctic blueberries and vodka mixed in tin cups.

Go Fly into Whitehorse, drive to Mayo and charter a floatplane to fly you and your gear to McClusky Lake. You can paddle the river from there. While difficult, if you can get there, do it – the clear blue water and mountains of the Wind River are unreal.

Stay Camp on the rocky sand bars of the Wind River. There are more rocks than sand, so make sure to bring along a good self-inflating air mattress. Firewood is easily found, but be sure to bring enough food and a water filter.

Eat There are tons of places to get incredible food and drink in Whitehorse. Klondike Rib and Salmon is famous for its, well, ribs and salmon, while Baked Café has unbelievable coffee and baked goods.

Drink Order a Yukon Brewing Company beer at Klondike Rib and Salmon, or, if you can get up to Dawson City, there’s the infamous sourtoe shot.

Photographer: Laina Briedis Location: Robert Moses Beach, Fire Island, NY, USA

As a child, my father used to take my sister and I to the Fire Island lighthouse – it was wonderful. When I got older I decided to go back, and found this nude beach close by. One of my close friends and I returned on a warm day and took full advantage of this discovery. I could not resist the opportunity to take photographs of such a free-spirited moment.

Go Relax at Robert Moses State Park followed by taking a small boardwalk hike past the stunning lighthouse to reach the nude beach in Kismet.

Stay Chill out at the beachy Dune Point Fire Island in Cherry Grove.

Eat Indulge your sweet tooth at Ice Castle with tasty ice cream and nostalgic candy.

Drink Order a Ketel One Greyhound made with fresh-squeezed grapefruit at Albatross.

Photographer: Rafael Oliveira Location: Cala Higuera, Almeria, Spain

My girlfriend, Sara, and I scouted naturist beaches in the Andalucian Coast to look for the picture perfect Playa de Los Muertos. While travelling we came across this beautiful little village, San José, just on the eastern entrance to the Cabo de Gata nature reserve. We only discovered Cala Higuera when we decided to try a different dirt road and ended up on a small, secluded, almost empty beach where we could take off our clothes, jump in the clear blue water and swim with the fish.

Go You can get to Cala Higuera from San José in Cabo de Gata, to the east of Almeria in the Andalucian coast of Spain. When you enter the village, at the first roundabout go left and enter a dirt road that leads directly to the beach.

Stay Rent Federico’s Beach House in Almeria, Níjar on AirBnB. This beautiful Mediterranean two-bedroom, terraced cottage is just minutes from the best beaches in Cabo de Gata. Federico is extremely nice and the house is exquisitely decorated with great summer holiday vibes.

Eat San José is filled with restaurants serving great seafood and typical Mediterranean cuisine. Stop in at 4 Nudos, a restaurant at the end of the small village’s sea port, and be sure to try the grilled Octopus for starters.

Drink Follow Rafael and Sara’s after-beach tradition by going to La Teteria in the center of the village for a Hierbabuena lemonade with rum. It’s incredible.

Photographer: Jelena Martinovic Location: Rovinj, Croatia

Rovinj is full of small coves where you can be alone and be naked all day. We were skinny dipping every day.

Go Roam by the sea and explore all the little paths that lead to hidden coves.

Stay Stay at the beautifully designed Hotel Lone, only a 15-minute walk from the historic town center and close to the sea.

Eat Every Istiran household or restaurant prepares manestra, a delicious thick boiled soup made of various vegetables, pesto, and cured pork.

Drink Istria is famous for their wines. A favorite is the popular white wine, Istrian Malvasia. Also try some domestic rakija, a Balkan spirit made out of herbs instead of fruit – the mint is especially tasty.

October

Photographer: Dan Rybicky Location: Miller Beach, Gary, IN, USA

It was the end of October but we were experiencing a glorious last gasp of summer warmth. We arrived at the lakeshore during that magic hour of dusk. No one was around, and the water was still surprisingly temperate. We had to take advantage of this precious moment, so my friends spontaneously shucked their clothes and ran wildly and happily out into the lake. I grabbed my camera and snapped this picture, capturing that bittersweet moment of the last skinny dip of the summer before winter sets in.

Go Miller Beach is the one place on Gary’s lakefront with a beautiful and extensive stretch of dunes and shoreline. Wander through Marquette Park, a recently renovated landmark designed in the 1920’s.

Stay Although there are no hotels or motels right near Miller Beach, there are many camping areas in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park in Chesterton. Make sure to reserve ahead of time – the campsites fill up fast!

Eat Stop by Marquette Perk (a sweet little place located right near the beach) for a fresh muffin and cup of coffee before your morning dip.

Drink Check out Miller Beach Market Place, which provides healthy and sustainable products, including a great selection of craft beers and fine wines. For a Chicago favorite, try Goose Island’s 312 Urban Wheat Ale.

Photographer: Andrés Canstañeda Location: Mexico City, Mexico

My friend Zayda is both beautiful and flexible. On this particular day she wanted to go to a hot tub so we found this “love hotel.” It was incredible – full of bright colors and pop art like a 1970s record store.

Go Get lost in the cobbled streets and charming lane-ways of Coyoacán, taking in the beautiful colonial-style buildings, squares and churches. Be sure to visit The Frida Kahlo Museum, or “La Casa Azul,” to take an intimate look at Kahlo’s art, love and life within the home in which she was born and died.

Stay Swing into the Pop Life Hotel. Each room is full of light and features bright and bold furniture - there are mirrors everywhere, funky sofas, even a padded circular hoop chair that seems fit for Cirque du Soleil.

Eat For a late night snack, try the legendary tacos al pastor at El Borrego Viudo.

Drink If you’re in the mood for adventure, try pulque, the ancient and once sacred Aztec beverage that dates back 2,000 years, currently enjoying a revival among Mexico City youth. Made by fermenting maguey sap, the frothy, milky beverage has been described as vicious, sour and bittersweet.

Photographer: Greg Williamson Location: Lennard River Gorge, Kimberley, Australia

The place is many, many miles from anyone else. Why would you wear clothes? Shortly after the photo was taken the woman with the baby in the photo became lost. We searched a long time for her - only finding her in the dark.

Go Walk or take a 4 wheel drive vehicle on Gibb River Road to access the gorge and falls between Derby and Fitzroy Crossing – while there isn’t a marked path, head to the right and you will get there.

Stay Pitch a tent and enjoy the cool swimming holes at the campgrounds of the Mt Hart Wilderness Lodge about 50 km off the main road.

Eat Seek out Lennard River Snack – a small caravan turned shop between the Windjana Gorge turn-off and a concrete bridge spanning the river. Robert, the owner, flies in by helicopter everyday so you can enjoy ice cream in the middle of nowhere.

Drink Be sure to bring and drink plenty of water.
