Your picture of the world can only mirror what is within. The source of neither light nor darkness can be found without. Forgiveness lifts the darkness, reasserts your will, and lets you look upon a world of light. There is a point beyond which (darkening) illusions cannot go. Suffering is not happiness and it is happiness you really want. – A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 73.5.1-2.4, 6.3-4 We are often reminded during the months of November and December to be thankful. This also means we can share in saying something that we are thankful for. Gift giving as a way of sharing can come in a variety of simple ways such as a smile or words of hope to someone in despair. Offering hopefulness is thankfully always a timeless gift that gives to both giver and receiver. It may seem impossible though to sustain a hopeful outlook even during times of holiday celebration given the world conditions of war, poverty, severe climate changes and joblessness here in the U.S.. Hope may be the best gift to give to everyone not just those on your holiday gift list.
Focusing on what is not right in the world often produces more of the same without relief. Staying hopeful in the face of distressing news that is often propagated both intentionally and unintentionally can be difficult to maintain. It is up to each of us to uplift ourselves. We also have the capacity to encourage and uplift each other. Despite the tendency to look outside of ourselves for happiness and encouragement the solutions to all that ails us starts within. Anyone who recognizes the miraculous power of this fosters this understanding. The opening Peace Pointer™ quote this month from A Course in Miracles gives a willful indicator that happiness is truly what we all really want. It is our forever inheritance to pass on from moment-to-moment a happy thought to share. Every happy thought we share helps lift ourselves, and others out of darkness. Having supportive family around us can be helpfully comforting not just during the holiday months of November and December. Families as microcosm of the whole always have the potential to represent us all as one "family of man". This can also mean all living beings although frequently not described as including all of life as part of our "immediate family". The possible exceptions to this are family pets. The limits of a family's inclusiveness are often defined by relationships. This can include other life forms if we choose to recognize what we have in common. As a single family of man we can see ourselves as completely unified as one or as an inclusively diverse many. As a family of diversity that includes all living beings, not all family members may be considered equal even within a commonality. We may individually agree to live in harmony as one but as a collective collection of species this includes that fact that we devour animals and plants in order to survive. This can be interpreted as evidence of our inability to live in total harmony with all of life. Even with a harmonious "living in peace" outlook it can seem hard to reconcile having to kill a turkey for instance or other life form in order to survive. Anyone who has worked for peace at some point recognizes this as an inner conflict that seems irreconcilable. What can arise even if you are a complete vegan who eats no meat or animal products is an unresolved inner feeling of hopeless resignation over the situation. Without a simple resolution of how to live without killing another life form most people are still able to maintain a hopeful outlook that we can learn to live in harmony with all of living beings. This is often described as also living in harmony with the environment and the earth. To this resolve it is helpful to remember when eating your favorite foods during this season of celebrations that it is truly possible to live in peace and harmony with all of life. We need only remember to see beyond the veiled illusions of the world of form to happily recognize our forever oneness as the eternity of Life itself. Remember it is happiness we all really want.
