Joe McQueen has been a long-time Ogden resident. At his pre-birthday celebration, many friends and family came to celebrate his life.

Jazz musician Joe McQueen celebrated his pre-100th birthday at the Utah State Capitol building on Feb. 7.

Friends and family at the celebration honored McQueen for his lifelong devotion to preserving a landmark in performance and cultural arts.

The Salty Crickets, a local elementary school band, performed “Happy Birthday,” while the audience sang along to McQueen before the first guest speaker spoke, featuring instruments widely used in jazz ensembles, such as the flute, violin, cello, and saxophone.

Mike Caldwell, Ogden City mayor, has known McQueen for years and said McQueen has helped establish a community of visionaries who are authentic, hopeful,

and historical.

“You (McQueen) exemplify all of the traits that make Ogden unique, that we take great pride in,” said Caldwell. “You continue to inspire us to achieve with the opportunities you have provided.”

At the ripe age of 99, McQueen continues to perform shows and gigs with his jazz group, The McQueen Quartet, at bars and venues in Ogden and surrounding areas.

McQueen has also performed shows, volunteered, and taught automotive technology at Weber State University, making him a part of the Weber State family.

“Joe reminds us to hold on and to never give up, to share love, and maybe that we can leave a small portion of the legacy that he has left in the community all over the state,” said Betty Sawyer, a longtime friend of McQueen.

McQueen was raised in Ardmore, Oklahoma, where he was introduced to the

saxophone, his signature instrument, by his older cousin, Hershel Evans, who was a member of the Count Basie Orchestra at the time.

The Count Basie Orchestra is a 16-18 piece ensemble founded in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1935, a prestigious jazz group during the “big band” era, who has collaborated with famous musicians like Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.

The Count Basie Orchestra still performs today.

At the age of 25, McQueen moved to Ogden with his wife, Thelma, in 1945 — when jazz music and the railroad were hot attractions in 1940s’ Ogden.

McQueen has lived in the same Ogden home for the last 73 years, performing live jazz music in Utah and says that he has no intention of leaving.

“When you have all these memories in a place like this, you don’t want to go some-

place else when you’re an old man like I am," McQueen said. "Utah has been my home for 73 years, and it will be my home until I pass on."

In 2002, former Utah governor Mike Leavitt established April 18 as “Joe McQueen Day” for the state of Utah.

McQueen humbled the audience at the birthday celebration with one last message.

“Anytime that I’m anywhere and you see me, you can say ‘hi, Joe,’ because I’m always willing to speak to anybody. I love everybody,” McQueen said.

McQueen will perform with The McQueen Quartet on the night before his official 100th birthday — May 30 — at the Gallivan Center in Salt Lake City on May 29.

The Crystal Crest Awards are an opportunity for Weber State University students and faculty to shine the light on individuals who have distinguished themselves.

Student Body President Jordan Slater said that the Crystal Crest Awards are one of his favorite events of the year.

"I love it because it recognizes individuals on campus who contribute so much. We have many incredible leaders who do many great things to help the University and the community," Slater said. "I am proud of each of the nominees and all of the hard work they do.”

The ten award categories for which students and faculty are nominated are: Talent of the Year, Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Wildcat Achievement, Excellence in Inclusivity, Master teacher, Registered Organization, Friend of the Students, Scholar of the Year and Volunteer Service Award.

In order to qualify for each award, there are certain criteria the nominee has to meet: for example, extra-curricular involvement, personal achievements or leadership qualities.

Haille Van Patten, the marketing and social media specialist for the Shepherd Union, handles the publicity of the nominations, including the event itself. Van Patten described the Crystal Crest as the Academy Awards of Weber State University.

"There are specific categories to recognize students, faculty, and staff members at WSU. The event itself is similar to a Hollywood awards show, in that there's a host, a collection of finalists for each award, and we encourage formal attire,” Van Patten said.

The full list of nominees for this year's awards were published online earlier this week, with 10 to 30 nominees in each award category. “My favorite part of the awards is seeing people get nominated who weren't expecting it," Van Patten said.

"It's amazing to see the full list of nomi-

nees, which gets published once nominations close, on social media. People begin tagging their friends and family who have been nominated and it becomes a moment of pure celebration.”

Individuals who are nominated are required to submit their applications to a committee of co-chairs for reviewing. The co-chairs are a group of 21 people comprised of students and staff.

To ensure that the nominee matches the award criteria for which they were nominated, the nominees go through a two week interview process with the committee. The end goal is to select five finalists per nomination category.

In March, the five finalists will be invited to an awards reception that is held in their honor. Each of the selected finalists are required to write a 45 second speech in the event they are chosen as a winner.

INDIE OGDEN AWARDS CELEBRATES HERITAGE

Every year, the Ogden community comes together to celebrate the people, culture, and local businesses with the Indie Ogden Awards. Now in its seventh year, the Indie Ogden Awards will be held March 8 at the Timbermine Steakhouse.

The theme for this years Indie Ogden Awards is “How The West Was Won,” celebrating Ogden’s western heritage.

Mikaela Shaffer, founder of Indie Ogden, moved to Ogden eight years ago from Portland. After falling in love with the city, Shaffer started the Indie Ogden Awards as a way to celebrate and promote Ogden.

A few of the award categories include best restaurant, art, music, volunteer, educator and “Ogdenite of the Year.”

The winners of each award are chosen by the community. Those interested in voting can go to indieogden.com. Voting will take place until Feb. 18.

Ogden resident Scotty Haze will kick off the evening with live country music, followed by a short show by the “Two Bit Babes Burlesque.”

Attendees will be served a three-course meal, with their choice of steak, chicken, fish or vegetarian.

“All of the food will be made with local ingredients,” Shaffer said. “Everything

from locally raised beef to locally grown micro grains.”

After the awards, DJ Chassis will host a dance party while Ogden’s Own Distillery will have custom made cocktails for purchase.

Ogden Click will have a photo booth at the event, so attendees can dress up in their best cowboy or cowgirl outfit to enjoy an evening celebrating Ogden.

Tickets are available to purchase on Eventbrite.com and cost $50. Tickets bought before midnight on February 18 with the code “indie19” will receive a $10 discount.

Attendees will receive a swag bag of

Ogden goodies, including custom pint glasses filled with prizes and other local memorabilia.

Because the Indie Ogden Awards are expected to sell out every year, those interested in attending are encouraged to buy tickets as soon as possible.

According to Shaffer, there’s no better way to support the local community than going to an evening celebrating all things Ogden.

“Food, booze, entertainment, and awesome people,” Shaffer said. “We’re bound to have a good time.”

I never had to be taught to work twice as hard; it was just an understanding. To get to where my Caucasian counterparts were, I had to put in more effort for less reward. However, despite earning my place at the table, I’ve never felt I belong or done enough.

When I worked in the retail industry, I had keys, access codes and knew the COO and influential higher-ups. I was told it was an honor to hold a managerial role, yet the first time I was asked if I had gotten a promotion, I answered by saying a “real grown-up” would show up soon.

I still refuse to introduce myself or end emails with the title “editor,” telling myself that I’ve done nothing to earn it. In my mind, I’ve just been in the right place at the right time, and people have yet to figure out that I don’t belong.

These feelings aren’t exclusive to me. In

1978, psychologists Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes first identified impostor syndrome, describing it as an “internal experience of intellectual phoniness in people who believe that they are not intelligent, capable or creative despite evidence of high achievement.”

In their research, Clance and Imes found that men do not experience impostor syndrome as often, but recognized that further research would need to be done.

Harvard psychologist Amy Cuddy wrote in her 2015 book “Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges” that some men feel like frauds, but because of the strong-assertive stereotype placed upon men, they shield their emotions and do not discuss their self-doubt.

Men who discuss their self-doubts are seen as failures in conforming to societal expectations, Cuddy wrote. This can lead to harassment or ostracism.

Kevin Cokley, a professor of educational psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, found that because of lack of representation, minorities experience impostor syndrome. Minorities do not see themselves as leaders or bosses within organizations, so when they reach that level, they feel like outsiders.

It’s become a pattern of mine to learn

a job, perform to the best of my abilities, take on responsibilities and then end up doing a superior’s job while they coast on the successes I bring.

There were times when I could have easily been promoted, but I always talked my way out of it, arguing to myself that I wasn’t talented enough, wasn’t a leader and that no one would listen to the short, young brown girl.

Titles have always been arbitrary in my mind when it comes to me. However, I can respect titles when it comes to my professors, bosses and editors because they have rightfully earned the respect, praise and role.

I walk into most meetings thinking I have contributed the least and with a mentality that today is they day they realize they made a mistake in promoting me. I never am satisfied with what I have done because, in my eyes, it will never be enough.

These behaviors are not only uncomfortable, but can lead to failure. People who feel like impostors are constantly self-criticizing and analyzing the smallest aspects of their work.

Cuddy writes that when people feel like impostors, they attribute their accomplishments to luck instead of hard work or

talent. Impostor syndrome causes choking at the worst possible moments and disengagement, which is virtually a guarantee of under-performance.

Achievements could alleviate these insecurities; however, for most, it worsens the experience.

Whenever I get a promotion or new responsibilities within my work, I see it as new ways to fail and show that I do not deserve whatever high regard is being given to me.

I’ve read multiple ways that could help me confront these feelings. The only thing that put me at ease was when a professor brought up impostor syndrome and a majority of the class said they dealt with it. I brought it up at work and people identified with it.

This is a shared human experience that even Hollywood elite like Issa Rae experience.

Rae told The New York Times she has a mantra that reminds her she’s worked hard and earned her place. Simply put, that’s what we all need to tell ourselves: it’s not just luck; I belong here.

In addition to juggling a full time job and class schedule at Weber State University, Jessica Septon has another burden causing her stress in the school year: textbooks.

During the first week of the semester, her health science class was already four chapters into their textbook. This lead Septon to race down to the bookstore in a panic and snatch the only book left for her class.

At this point, she was the second of 30 students in the class to actually have their textbook. And yet, the bookstore was already out of stock.

“One textbook in my class was $150 dollars, and there was no option for used books at the Wildcat Bookstore,” Septon said. “I understand that we have a necessity for books, but the university is asking students to pay a lot.”

With midterms approaching, many students at WSU are still plagued by the debt of textbook prices from the beginning of the semester.

“We have had several students come in and cry,” said bookstore employee Storm Powell. “It is clearly a stressful matter for students.”

Wildcat Bookstore manager Ryan Stewart addresses these kinds of issues in his daily work life. He works with faculty and sources inventory to develop programs such as Day One access, eBooks and deals with rentals and used books.

Stewart believes there to be a number of factors that play into textbook prices being more expensive on campus than with a second party seller such as Amazon or Chegg.

“When we talk about goods and ser-

vices, in the same way that a customer at the store has options for shopping in different places, the Wildcat store is essentially a customer trying to find affordable options at the lowest price,” Stewart said.

According to Stewart, the only source the store can purchase textbooks from is the publisher. Additionally, the Wildcat Store does not have a lot of control over the books students use throughout the semester. However, professors do.

All of the textbooks are generally being marketed to the instructor of the class.

When the instructor chooses the material, the store is able to acquire this textbook from the publisher at a set price on a national level.

“From what I know, most professors at Weber choose very expensive textbooks,” Powell said. “I feel like professors don’t really look into the actual prices of books.

Some of them just come in and they want this specific textbook, but they can be incredibly expensive for students.”

In addition, the Wildcat Bookstore often has to add markup values to textbooks in order to sustain their services.

“Generally speaking, every college bookstore will add a markup,” Stewart said.

“We are a business who are charged with providing affordable course materials to our students, but at the same time, we are running a program that needs to keep the lights on, employ students, ship products and essentially all other operating expenses.”

Although the process of acquiring textbooks at the best price can be difficult for students, the book store is determined to create affordable options. Stewart regularly attends conferences with other professionals in his field to coordinate new and affordable opportunities for students.

“I know bookstores get a bad rep for textbook prices, but I can promise that our number one goal is strategizing how we can reduce these costs for students,” Stewart said.”

Some students have different ideas and recommendations for ways the WSU community can work together to accomplish these affordable textbook opportunities.

“The bookstore could at least offer a PDF and be upfront and honest about these things when books are unavailable,” Septon said. “Even if professors sent out an email of what books you will be needing for the class before they run out at the store.”

Other students such as senior Tanner Stephens often tackle the costs of books by reselling them.

“In the four years I’ve been on campus, I feel like book prices make a big difference,” Stephens said. “But if you can resell them, a lot of times you will get most of your money back.”

The software Day One Access is another option that can provide students a lot of monetary relief. This software comes included in every students tuition, and is an adapting program to help students retain information more clearly.

The Wildcat Bookstore also offers payment plans which give students more flexibility in the monthly amount they would like to spend on technology, supplies and textbooks.

“I went to college,” Stewart said. “I know that course materials are expensive and I know that we will not always have the best price. I would like students to start with us, give us a shot and go from there.”

MEN’S TENNIS GETS FIRST

After losing their first seven matches, the Weber State University men’s tennis team went 2-0 over the weekend, beating Colorado Mesa and Gonzaga University.

The Wildcats took the court Saturday and handed the Colorado Mesa Mavericks their third loss on the year, winning 6–1.

With juniors Kris Van Wyk and Nick Werner, the ‘Cats started off strong winning the No. 1 spot for the doubles match. Sophomore Bo-han Li and freshman Paul Ohde followed up that match with a No. 2 doubles win.

Each of the five singles matches were won in dominating fashion by Van Wyk, Ohde, Bo-han, Werner and junior Cezary

Walkusz. The singles match wins were key to the team’s first win of the season.

“Sometimes the first win of the season is the hardest,” said Brad Ferriera, the director of tennis. “Hopefully this is the catalyst we need to get going. I’m happy with how the boys played today and are looking forward to our match tomorrow.”

Weber followed up their first win of the season by handing the Gonzaga Bulldogs their first loss, 4–3. Gonzaga rolled into Ogden undefeated on the year with solid wins over Montana and Boise State.

Weber started the Gonzaga match off by winning the doubles, thanks to Ohde and Li at the No. 2 spot and Werner and Walkusz at the No. 3 spot.

Werner fought hard during his No. 5 spot singles match that went three sets, but lost the last set 6–4 and lost the match. Li and

junior Junhao Ye also played well but lost the No. 2 and 4 singles matches.

In the No. 6 spot for the Wildcats, Walkusz took Gonzaga’s Matthew Perkins ,a sophomore, to three sets and won the final set 6–3 to get the point. Ohde at the No. 3 spot also took his opponent to the third set and won 6–3 to get another singles point.

The ‘Cats stayed strong all match long.

They pulled out the victory thanks to Van Wyk’s dominant performance in the determining match after each team was tied at three points apiece.

“Everyone finished their matches and it was tied at three points a piece, coming down to my match,” Van Wyk said. “Knowing that my team relied on me gave me the focus and determination to win. It was an amazing experience and probably my best college match so far.”

The Wildcats are now 2-7 on the year.

Currently the team has hopes of starting a long winning streak, hoping to do what they did last season with a nine-match win streak.

“Last season we had a rough start, and there was a point where it started to change, and we went on a nine-match winning streak,” Van Wyk said. “This time, we have turned it around earlier in the season.

I believe we can build on this and end up having a really good season.”

The team will host UC Irvine on Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. at the Ogden Athletic Club in South Ogden. Big Sky Conference play begins the following week against Eastern Washington at home.

Student government elections are just around the corner, with candidacy declaration packets due on Feb. 22.

Davis Campus Senator Alex Cothran tweeted, “Elections are approaching! Plan events, represent your peers. Your voice is important! Find them in the SIL office.”

Students can run for both legislative and executive positions. There are 22 legislative positions and eight executive positions.

In order to be eligible for these positions, students must have at least a 2.5 GPA and be taking a full class load during each semester they reside in the position.

In addition to the minimum requirements, students must submit the candidacy form, a platform statement and a professional head shot. If approved, students must

attend the Rules/Declaration meeting or will be ineligible to run as a candidate.

Once elected by the students, students have expected and contracted events they will need to attend.

“Interested candidates have to know their constituency they’re serving. That understanding can be acquired and developed through meeting with the advisers of the positions,” said Tara Peris-Caputo, director of Student Involvement.

Once student candidates have been approved to run, they are allowed to distribute stickers, flyers and any other campaign material as of March 9 until the end of elections on March 14.

Election results will be announced at Weber’s Got Talent and Election Show at 6 p.m.

On average, according to the American Red Cross, a person in America needs blood every two seconds, and every eight minutes they respond to someone in crisis. That’s a lot of blood needed from donors. This winter, the Red Cross has put out an emergency need for blood donors.

In order to help out, Weber State University hosted another blood drive from Feb. 11 to Feb. 13.

The last blood drive WSU hosted was part of a “Blood Battle” against the Utah State University Aggies. It was a bloody battle all the way to the end, but the Aggies came out on top with more donated blood than the Wildcats.

The ARC and the WSUSA Service Team student chair for the organization, Rylie Howard, put together WSU’s blood drives.

This year, they decided to return to a more regular blood drive in order to help with the greater need.

There are some restrictions on who may donate blood, which render many people ineligible to donate. Common factors include medication, illness, low iron or weight restrictions.

A restriction many are not aware of is travel outside of the United States within the last three years. The ARC notes that this puts the person at greater risk for malaria and disqualifies them.

A Power Red donation allows the donor to safely donate two units of red blood cells during one donation while returning his or her plasma and platelets using a special machine.

To be eligible for Power Red Donation, the donor must be blood type O, A negative or B negative. Donors may donate every 112 days, or up to 3 times per year. Male donors under 18 may only donate 2 times per year.

Male donors must be at least 17 years old, at least 5 foot 1 inch tall and weigh at least 130 pounds. Female donors must be at least 19 years old, 5 foot 5 inches tall and weigh at least 150 pounds.

Donors may also donate platelets and plasma, the requirements for which are on the ARC website.

If you happen to be unable to donate, the ARC can still use volunteers during drives.

Finding the blood drive event on Weber Connect will provide more information.

Finally, the ARC pointed donors to classes they offer. On their website, there is a variety of classes in local areas.

They offer First Aid, CPR, AED, BLS/CPR for Healthcare, Babysitting and Child Care, Swimming and Water Safety, Lifeguarding, Instructor Training, CNA training, and CNA testing.

NAU STORMS BACK TO BEAT WILDCATS

The Weber State University women’s basketball team faced off against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks on Feb. 9, looking to ride the momentum from a dramatic victory two days earlier. Despite holding the lead for most of the game, the Wildcats fell victim to a furious rally by the Lumberjacks as they were defeated 75–64 at the Dee Events Center.

The ‘Cats led 52–44 heading into the fourth quarter before NAU began their comeback. Freshman forward Khiarica Rasheed led the way for the Jacks, scoring 12 points during a 17–6 run that gave her

team a 61–58 lead with four minutes to play.

“If we don’t do our work early to get in position, so she (Rasheed) doesn’t get the ball, we’re in trouble,” said WSU head coach Velaida Harris.

Rasheed finished the game with 22 points after scoring just four in the first half.

NAU extended their lead to six with under two minutes left, while Weber’s offense went flat and was in desperate need of a stop and a basket. This forced the Wildcats to play the free throw game in order to stop the clock.

four of their final five shots to lead to the 11-point margin of defeat.

“We got to get boards, and they turned those rebounds not into extra possessions, but into extra points,” said Weber State senior guard Emily Drake.

Drake led her team in scoring with 23 points.

Weber started off the game on a strong note, as they enjoyed a two-point lead to close out the first quarter. Junior forward Dominique Williams had a hot start, leading all scorers with six first quarter points.

Drake put on an offensive showcase in the second quarter, scoring 10 points to help WSU to a 32–27 halftime lead.

The ‘Cats defense was a strong point

in the first half, as they forced nine NAU turnovers to go along with six steals and a block.

Senior guard Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman also had a strong afternoon for the Wildcats, scoring 20 points. She helped increase WSU’s lead to nine points in the third quarter with three straight makes from the field, forcing a NAU timeout.

With the loss, Weber State dropped to 5–18 on the season and fell short in their attempt to win back-to-back contests for the first time. The Wildcats will hit the road against Montana, with contests in Missoula and Bozeman on Feb. 14 and 16.

4. c. Dunn took aim at Ocasio-Cortez following her election, saying “The embarrassment is to have bimbos like you with nothing between their ears,” according to New York Daily News. Dunn deleted the tweet and apologized soon after, then deactivated his Twitter account.

5. c. Travis Scott was set to perform on Feb. 11, but his concert was postponed a month, which caused the assembled crowd to rush the doors, according to New York Daily News. One fan reportedly was pepper sprayed and footage shows another fan throwing a water bottle at the doors of the BOK center, which seems to crack the glass.
