Leeson explains, “New for this year, there will be a 'Shop Local Holiday Raffle.' Participating merchants will have raffle boxes and entry forms; shoppers can enter once at each location Monday, December 2 through Saturday, December 7. Winners will be announced on Monday, December 9.” Gifts range from certificates from merchants to a grand prize of $500 to shop with at chamber-member businesses, and Leeson adds, the raffle replaces the stamping of a map from previous years. Snow Records Fall in Owens Valley The City of Bishop broke a snowfall record, with seven inches reported at the Bishop Airport, by Thanksgiving. This is the earliest, heavy snowfall for the area in November, breaking the previous 1964 record of nearly four inches. Cold temperatures followed the back-to-back storms, keeping the Owens Valley a wintry white, and adding to the travel issues, but also giving visitors an early holiday treat. SNOW! The region's weather remains unsettled for the rest of the week, and weekend, with rain and snow forecast, once again.

The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

How It Works There is one major premise which is vital for understanding our life and experience, and that is that this is a perpetually creative Universe. God or life is creative, and man, God’s creation is creative. Man, being made in the Image and after the likeness of the Creator is endowed with the same Power. Creation is moving energy into form, from the unmanifested to the manifested. The form we are dealing with can be anything from intangible thoughts and emotions or physical appearances. Each individual experiences life by the use of their own creative awareness. We are not in competition with God; on the contrary, God is creating by means of us. And God, being God is forever creating. It would certainly be better to use that creative power for what you would want in your life than that which you don’t. Each of us has that power, and can use it, but in order to be successful, we must have the wisdom to use it intelligently. Heretofore most of us have lived what I call a salt and pepper type of life. We have had a lot of good things we have experienced and more or less an equal amount of what we have called bad things. Naturally we rather have more of the good and less of the bad, but how to achieve that has not been known or obvious. Some people count on luck or fortune to turn the tide. Some individuals rely on some sort of talisman or symbol. If any of them work for you, by all means keep it up, However; it has not worked for me, so I must pursue a path which I can understand and use. Raymond Charles Barker wrote, “You are mind and emotion, created with a free will to experience good or evil. Your mind and emotions are invisible, but the good or bad results from your use of them are viable in your life.” What he is saying is that the negatives we encounter were created by us. The fact that we can eliminate or neutralize everything that is not good or pleasant, however, we must work with our minds to accomplish it. Barker farther states that he believes that evil is absolute nonsense and is unnecessary. It is always temporary, unless you hang onto it, it has no intelligence in it. Evil is nothing but an action or reaction in the human mind. Where is fear, where is unhappiness? It is in the mind and emotions. Since, as Barker says, “You are mind and emotion,” you have the power to change both the mind and the emotions. Make no mistake, making these changes is by no means an easy task, however, if there is consistency within the endeavor, it can be more than worth the effort. Weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth is one way of dealing with negatives. In this way you have accepted the negative as real, hence an invited guest. We can get pity from your friends and relatives. We can even put on a brave front and act heroic, but is that really the way we want to go? NO! NO! NO! Paul said to a very alive and alert audience, “Awake thou that sleepeth and arise from the dead.” You are dead to the life you can have if you have accepted the limitations of the past. To be fully alive you must embrace life with all the gusto you can. You need not give evil its due, or pay heed to its power. It has no power, but that which you give it. Celebrate your day, everyday. Give thanks for the good in your life, and make room for more by starving the negative by your lack of attention to it. Strike negative words and phrases from your vocabulary and think on those things you desire. Be a goody two shoes. You will love it and so will others. You are the captain of your ship; keep it headed to a favorable port. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
