Owens Valley Distilling Company Getting into the spirits of things Sitting at the southeastern end of Bishop, the place is small, but mighty nifty inside. The in-house construction took nearly two years, and the couples have done all of the interior work themselves. It is impressive. The distillery's contemporary, up-do, features a western motif, with parts of the Tatum's old barn on Highway 6 being incorporated in the ceiling, with subtle hints of old-style Chicago speakeasy. The high-end spirits' labels are handstamped, with art highlighting the distillery's unique location in the High Sierra. The distillery's creation is from 60-percent recycled materials. The idea of the distillery, says Brittany, stems from “the craft brewery markets being saturated,” however, “the craft distillery world is taking off.” Adam and Dave are distilling, on site, and produce vodka, gin, a rum mix, a sipping rum, and a barrel rum. They are also working on a whiskey, and bourbon, which will feature locally grown corn from the Montgomery Creek Ranch in Hammil Valley. Adams explains the rum is aged for four months

At right, Dave Holman, owner, and Adam Floyd, mix-master, produce small-batch (less than 100,000 gallons per year) spirits in several different distilling processes at the Owens Valley Distilling Company. By Christina Reed The Hired Pen “Presenting you with small batch artisan spirits for the Eastern Sierra”---Owens Valley Distilling Company Bishop, CA—They came for the climbing, and stayed for the spirits of things. Two couples are making a go of creating topshelf liquor, while living in one of the world's top mountain climbing regions. The husband-and-wife owners, Dave and Brittany Holman, decided to “ditch their careers” down south, and “we moved here in 2006,” says Brittany. Mix-master, Adam Floyd, who has brewing experience in craft beers, and his wife, Allison, work side-by-side with the Holmans in the operations at the Owens Valley Distilling (opening in January of 2018). The distillery also serves locally crafted beers.

The Owens Valley Distilling Company, established in Bishop, CA, in 2018, is filling a niche in the Owens Valley, serving topshelf spirits, such as vodka, gin, and rums.

Allison Floyd serves up several different spirits at the Owens Valley Distilling Company's popular tasting room.

in a fifteen gallon barrel. It's a “nano,” or small-batch distillery; the Craft Distillers Act, Assembly Bill 1295 (2016), allows customers to purchase up to 2.25 liters directly from the craft distilleries, which are defined as producing less than 100,000 gallons per year. Ultimately, this means the small-batch distilleries are on the same frontier landscape, as entrepreneurs, as brewers and vintners. “Working the tasting room,” says Brittany, and “the amazing people,” are a big part of the business' appeal. And, along with running the tasting room, the distillery serves a traditional Chicago-styled hot dog and beef plate, Brittany adds, with a smile and hail to her hometown. It's a generous portion of flavorful beef, and a lunch following is developing. Customers sit along several bar walls, and tall bar tables with unique metal features, allow for small groups of people to enjoy a cozy tasting and lunch. There is a local's card, exclusive to the distillery, and there are plans to market in local businesses very soon.

Diana P. Wade - Disability Advocate and Representative Serving Inyo and Mono Counties since 1995 • No Fee unless you win.

Vicka Stout of Bishop has been appointed by Governor Brown as a member of the California Board of Behavioral Sciences; a state regulatory agency responsible for licensing, examination, and enforcement of professional standards for licensed marriage and family therapists, licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional clinical counselors, and licensed educational psychologists. The mission of the board is to protect and serve Californians by setting, communicating, and endorsing standards for the safe and competent mental health practice. Vicka received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 1974 from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma Washington. In 1977, she received her Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. She has been a licensed marriage and family therapist (formerly licensed marriage, family, and child counselor) since 1978. She also holds a pupil personnel services credential. She was employed by Inyo County Mental Health from 1977 to 1989, when she began to serve as a counselor for the Bishop Unified School District until her retirement in the summer of 2017. Vicka previously served on the Governor’s Advisory Board for Patton State Hospital. Recently recognized by the Bishop City Council with their “Citizen Award,” Vicka is a member of Altrusa and Athena. Upon receiving word of her appointment Vicka commented, “I am very grateful to the Governor for his trust in my abilities and providing me with the opportunity to serve the citizens of California in this important capacity. I’m excited to be able to help insure that behavioral health practitioners are qualified, and with appropriate accountability, are adhering to the law, ethical standards, and are providing high quality professional services.”

Caltrans Director’s Message Cover: What will California’s transportation network look like in the future? Will we be riding in autonomous taxis, belong to an electric bicycle sharing club, using a printing process to create our vehicles of tomorrow? And how will Caltrans adapt to this new transportation world? A new report lays out some possible paths for Caltrans planners to consider. Modified illustration courtesy of Caltrans and its partners are launching a wave of road repair and construction projects around the state, and there will be a level of activity that has not been seen for decades as we begin to restore our vast but battered State Highway System. As Caltrans director, I’m thrilled to play a Laurie Berman role in this coming transformation being made possible by the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, known as Senate Bill 1 (SB 1). On the front lines, though, will be the thousands of workers who will be doing the hard, physical, and dangerous jobs of rebuilding and maintaining the state roadways — often as vehicles speed by within mere feet of them. Highway construction and maintenance is one of the most hazardous jobs in California, and the nation. With more work zones being set up in the next few years, we are taking every step we can to make sure that everyone — those wearing Caltrans orange, highway contractors, truck drivers, or families on vacation — gets home safely. We’re being helped by advances in equipment technology that reduce the exposure of work crews to potentially deadly roadways. We are using, or testing new generation remote-controlled mowers, motorized pothole patchers, automated flagging devices and multiuse trimming machines that work faster and eliminate the need for manual vegetation clearing, to name a few safety enhancements. Caltrans also is employing a best practices approach for construction projects to safely SEE CALTRANS CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

guide motorists through as conditions change. But even the most secure cocoon we can construct around our work crews can be shattered in an instant if those traveling the roads don’t have the same focus. Our message of safety first and foremost is brought home every spring, when we mourn and honor those workers who did not make it home to the embrace of their families. Individual Caltrans regional districts staged their own Fallen Workers Memorials as part of Caltrans Safety Awareness Week, culminating in a large contingent of employees and families gathering on the steps of the state Capitol in Sacramento. Unfortunately, this year we inscribed two more names on our memorial. We paid special tribute to a bridge toll collector who was killed when a suspected drunken driver crashed into her booth, and a painting supervisor who was shot and killed on the job. Their tragic deaths brought to 188 the number of Caltrans workers who have been killed on the job since 1921. At the ceremony, I was particularly moved by the appearance of Deborah Prochnow, a Caltrans Maintenance Division manager who works in our Los Angeles-based District 7. She read a poem she wrote about her harrowing experiences working along roadsides. I want to share a short sample: “You will stuff the brush with death way down deep. You will get your instructions for the day put on your vest and hard hat and get back to work. You are the unsung hero protecting people who don’t see you.” When you are driving through work zones, we urge you to put away all your distractions and focus on your surroundings. Plan for delays and let’s make sure we all get to where we are going safely.

Golf fun day at Bishop Country Club The Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau would like to say a special thankyou to everyone that assisted with the 6th Annual Golf Fun Day. The event really proved to put the “fun” in fundraising and we’re grateful to all of the players, volunteers, holesponsors and prize donors. Business supporters included: Alex Printing, Alpine Signs, Amerigas, Anneke Schat’s Wine Cellar, Automobile Club of Southern CA, Berkeley, Bishop Creek Chevron, Bishop Nursery, BP Distributing, Cardinal Village Resort, Convict Lake Resort, Eastern Sierra Community Bank, Eastern Sierra Propane, Eastern Sierra Realty, Eldrige Electric, Inc., El Pollo Loco, Fendon’s Furniture, Hidden Creeks Ranch, High Country Lumber, Holy Smoke Texas Style BBQ, Home Lumber Co., Honey Bee Photography-Gayla Wolf, Inyo Council for the Arts, The Inyo Register, KIBS/KBOV Radio, KMMT Radio, LaCasita, The Looney Bean, Manor Market, Mt. Whitney Golf Club, Mule Days Celebration, Northern Inyo Hospital, Our Water Works Car Wash, Paiute Palace Casino, Perry Motors, Pintail Imaging, Sierra Maps, Sierra Wave Media & Western Outdoor News…we sure hope we haven’t forgotten anyone! The annual Golf Fun day doesn’t follow the traditional tournament format. It’s really just a fun way to learn basic golf skills in a non-competitive way. The event draws a nice mix of experienced and non-experienced golfers and each hole features a different golf game challenge. Some holes are just for putting, some are for chipping a few for driving and all for fun. All of the prizes were awarded by raffle so everyone, regardless of score, had a chance to win. Prizes included merchandise and gift certificates donated by chamber member businesses and the grand prize was a new La-Z-Boy Recliner donated by Fendon’s Furniture. The Bishop Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit 501(c) (6) organization that relies on community support for its many programs and projects. We’re already looking forward to next year! The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

Believe in Perfection A few weeks ago, I wrote an article entitled Cause and Effect. It was well received by some, however; there were those that desired a better explanation in order to apply the basic premise to their studies. Of particular note was the difference between what Quimby, Troward, and Holmes called First Cause and secondary causation. As I mentioned in the article, First Cause is associated with God. Secondary cause is associated with man. If we believe the motive of our deity is to enhance life, a personal belief that the world is against you or that you are just plain unlucky is contradictory to the first premise. It is said that God create Universally or macro, while man creates personally or micro. There are those that say that man does not create at all, but their life is a reflection of how they utilized God’s creation. It is vital that we recognize a source greater than we are, which has presented endless opportunities for growth and enrichment, but we have to initiate it. Lest I turn off those that are more inclined towards scientific intervention rather than the image of a big man in the sky, we are basically referring to the laws and statutes surrounding life itself. One reason I like to talk about God is that, if there is a God, He/She/It must be Perfect, and out of that Perfection there could not come imperfection. So when it says, in the Bible at the end of Genesis I that looked at all that had been created and called it good essentially, everything God created was Perfect. Even Adam and Eve was Perfect, of course, they didn’t know any other way. We can talk about snakes and apples until we are blue in the face, but, to put it simply, but when man doubted his own divinity, the troubles began. Many years ago, I graduated from high school and secured ma position with a local factory as a printing plate engraver. I was told from the start that there was only one legitimate excuse for missing work, and that was sickness; as if disease beyond our ability to avoid it. To resolve this, we must return to our basics about cause and effect. Did God or scientific endeavor include sickness as an inescapable consequence in the Creation phase, or is this secondary cause and the wrong use of First Cause? Since we have agreed that everything that God created was Perfect, we would have to attrtibite, sickness to something other than God, but since all there is is God, it must be the choice of man, and therefore a perfect realization of man’s use of what God has given him. From the book, “Living the Science of Mind,” The basis for correct spiritual treatment (Scientific prayer) starts with the idea that Being is already Perfect. The Idea of Perfection is the Spiritual Power which heals. From the standpoint of pure Spirit, an unknown or hidden false cause would be just unreal as a known or revealed one. Therefore we must know that disease is neither cause, medium or effect. The treatment (Prayer) we give is an activity of the Law enforcing this Truth.” Begin seeing yourself as whole, perfect and complete. You can reside in the promised land, but not if you keep envisioning yourself as a flawed and inadequate being. Start seeing yourself as you were created: Perfect, Spiritual and Divine.. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
