“Us Little Folks Try Harder” Manor Market - An Eastern Sierra Outpost By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—For nearly 50 years, Manor Market, on State Route 168, west of Bishop, CA, has been an outpost for groceries, sundries, and specialty items. People venturing up West Line Street in Bishop have no doubt seen the giant chicken atop Manor Market and wondered-"what's that about?" Perhaps they pulled into the gas station to fill up and shop in the neighborhood market with a bit of everything under the sun. And, if by chance they happened upon one of the staff or owners/Oney family member, the customer would soon find out that the chicken, the store's quasi-mascot, isn't the only thing the store serves up daily. As an entrepreneurial family, the Oneys truly live up to the store's motto, "Us Little Folks Try Harder." Troy and Susie Oney and their children, Dee Ann, Kyle and Brenda, have all been involved in the success of Manor Market-fondly called "The Starship" by the family. Kyle currently owns the enterprise, with third generation Oneys working in the store too. Manor Market, which opened on January 20, 1969, isn't the only business the Oneys created in the eastern Sierra Nevada. Troy and Susie opened the first Bar-B-Q Bill's restaurant in

Manor Market is known for its locally grown produce, and other products, including seasonal specialties, like Talbot's Pheasant eggs.

Bishop (on South Main Street) in 1966; they owned and managed Manor True Value Hardware store for 18 years (from 19761990's), and they opened the first self-serve gas station (at Manor Market) in Inyo County in 1972-when gas was "twenty-nine & nine" (cents that is). The hard-working couple also owned Big Pine Manor, a market next to the Bristlecone Motel (in the late 1960's), and they ranched near Dyer, Nevada. Troy and Susie's work ethic carried on in their children. Kyle started working full time at 15-years-old. The family's Jeep Wagoneer would be loaded up at Young's Warehouse in L.A., and the family would go out of their way to find things their customers wanted. Manor Market is a locals market, and listening to the customers' desires remains a cornerstone of the business, and the store's big selections of natural meat, produce, and products are examples of being progressive. Eating and shopping locally is especially important in the market's focus, and Troy and Susie still put in a garden of vegetables, which line the store's produce section. Apple Hill, another locally owned and operated ranch, also supplies fruit, vegetables, and other organic specialties. Baxter's Honey, of Independence, CA, is a commonly stocked item, produced in the Owens Valley for more than 100 years. Being "ahead of the times” seems to be an Oney trait, and the family doesn't rest on their laurels much. The store underwent a major makeover four years ago, and during the remodel Kyle noted they were "keeping the funky." The expansion increased the shopping space by 2,500 sq. ft., and included the additions of gigantic cold cases (for beer and beverages), the "Beer Cave" (the largest super-cooled place in the Owens Valley to find 18 and 30 packs of brews), more diary and organics products, more variety of produce, and more yo-

Manor Market has the Owens Valley's largest selections of beer, wine, and spirits, and they also sell fishing licenses, bait and tackle, gas, ice, and food-to-go. Photos by The Hired Pen gurts. The store became more energy efficient, and word spread about the daily hot food specials, sandwich and salads-to-go selections, and the beer and wine shopping opportunities. Manor Market is well known for its sizable selections and collections of wines (400 varieties and counting) and beers (170 brands), and Troy started the wine tastings in the area in the 1970s. The market has always been about community, and there is a well-established recycling business which is a part of the store. The staff at Manor Market, including the hundreds of former high schoolers and community members who have worked there, are all part of the store's longevity and success. The Oney family continues to stress the "Three R's" in business. "Respect, Responsibility and Reason," Troy once said in an interview with The Sierra Reader. The market is full of people who try to do the very best, and the business is stocked to the brim with fresh products and bright ideas from all sides of the aisles. And, the market is an outpost of sorts, one which changes with the generations and seasons.

LAWNMOWER & SMALL ENGINE REPAIR We service all makes & models SALES • SERVICE • PARTS Pick up & Delivery Available

This Thing Called Life No matter the depth of the belief system, or lack of the same, it must be concluded that somewhere in the history of mankind that an idea took form and inhabited the earth. In the creation story presented in the Judeo-Christian Bible, God speaks creation into the cosmos, and it forms as directed. Somehow, it is seldom questioned how the invisible brought forth the material or visible. It is considered a miracle of God, as if only Spirit could do such a thing, however; that same Bible tells us that man was created in the image and after the likeness of God, which means what ever God can do, man can do. Each of us is in a continual creation story of our own making. It may appear that situations, circumstances and other people have shaped our destiny, but like Jesus said, “Don’t judge by appearances, but a righteous judgment.” To the individual that takes control of his emotions and thinking, there are no limits to what he can do in his life. Most unfortunately are going to need to challenge miss-belief, halfbelief and outright lies we have been told, or thought we heard. As in everything else we start with God, or Spirit. Spirit spoke and Life ensued. Man was the culmination of what God called good. The One Mind of God spoke life into man, and his use of that Mind determined his life and experience. We are free to think what ever we want, but we must be prepared for the consequences, if we allow lack, loss and limitation to dominate our thought. My teacher would often say, “What you are thinking about, you are bringing about.” Since my teacher was my wife and partner, she could have a running commentary when I fell prey to some of my negative past ideas. She would say, “You can have what you say.” My initial; reaction would be defensive, but I knew she was right. It helped me become aware of the power of my thought. It is not too difficult to match negative emotions with illness or depression. Ernest Holmes wrote, “Spirit, then, is all there is at this very hour and all creation is spiritual. The Universe is a Spiritual System impregnated with Divine Ideas and peopled with Spiritual Forms. The ideas of God are perfect laws on their way to producing complete and perfect effects. The Universe is alive, conscious, awake and aware. It is love and life. It is law and order. It is a cosmos.” Each of us has the ultimate choice of how and where we will live. It can be Heaven, and it can be hell. There is no man with the white beard or a devil with a forked tail. All there really is is you, with Spirit living by means of you. God is making a personal appearance by means of you. The tools for the good life are available and ready for your direction. Think your way whole, complete and perfect. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
