Oklahoma Club Calf Association - May ‘10 After what many consider to be one of the worst winters in history in our part of the world, today the grass is green, the leaves are out, and the wind is blowing. Everyone is in hopes of great crops, good pastures, and a super calf crop. It was beautiful for the breeding shows and all of the contests; however, the last weekend, with the market shows, was another story. Blowing snow and freezing temperatures tested everyone’s real “want to” which we all have or we wouldn’t do this. High hopes and expectations are building in all of the exhibitors as well as Moms, Dads, Grandpas and Grandmas as we prepare for The Oklahoma Beef Expo, which kicks off a new point year in our OCCA. It also is where we have our end of year awards banquet. All of the awards for breeds, all around heifer and steer exhibitors, showmanship, and scholarships for outstanding members are presented. The championship buckles awarded for high point breed exhibitors can be seen worn by winners over the past fifteen years at our shows and functions. All around jackets with letter patches for breeds or showmanship are the pride of our livestock exhibitors throughout the state. Parents who have children finishing their show career stand and talk to friends whom they once competed against. They recall the steers and heifers that they showed and the races for the belt buckles that were so competitive back in their day. Yes, this is a family orientated organization that promotes youthful fellowship, lasting memories, and friendships. Parents, you should be proud of the time, money, and effort put forth for your son or daughter to participate in an organization that promotes Americanism and true camaraderie. Learning and developing through an association with a product that not only the United States, but the entire world, depends on for survival, BEEF. Kids always remember the time, money and effort that Mom and Dad put forth allowing you an opportunity to be a part of a youth organization, such as the OCCA. The responsibility, hard work, selection, evaluation, and leadership are all so tightly knitted for you to succeed! A thank you and a hug is all Mom and Dad want for this and you will remember that hug even more than they do in the years to come. When we go home from the banquet, we can always remember the friends from the past year. As we drive through the pasture looking for next years champions that are being born now, while thinking of those great expectations for the coming show year. Remember, get your membership forms in! Until next time, may all your calves be champions and your experiences be memorable.

Sincerely, Lyle Blakley, OCCA President www.oklahomaclubcalfassociation.com
