LETTER FROM THE G.M. It’s February, and I realized that I forgot to say Happy New Year in the January issue of The Shops at Wailea Newsletter! So to make up for it, allow me to say it in a few languages: Happy New Year, Prosit Neujahr, Akemashite Omedeto Gozaimasu, Feliz Año Nuevo, Une Bonne Resolution and of course Hau’oli Makahiki Hou! We closed 2010 on a definite up-note both in terms of visitor traffic and sales. In late 2010, a few new stores opened in the center including Lambros Goldsmith and Moonbow Tropics. There are a few pukas, but most are accounted for and we’ll see some movement before you can say Prosit Neujahr. Remember the story I shared about customer service several months back? Amazingly I found another example of poor customer service that confounded me. A few weeks back my car was right in the crosshairs of one of the flashfloods, the result of which was a destroyed car that I loved. (It’s a guy thing.) So off I went car shopping. I stopped at a dealer who will remain unnamed and found two cars that I was interested in. Unfortunately Car A had a dead battery and Car B couldn’t be unlocked because the key box-thingy was jammed. So we agreed I would come back the next day and all would be resolved. Except I did go back but it wasn’t resolved. The dead battery was still dead and the key box-thingy was still jammed. Frustrated I left but not before the salesperson promised to have this resolved. Two days later, still no phone call telling me either the cars were ready, to apologize that they still weren’t ready or to tell me to jump off a bridge. And you wonder why some auto manufacturers are struggling? It’s not about a lack of customers. They are out there. You have to draw them in and convert the sale. The moral of my story . . . retailers with great customer service are twice as likely to develop loyalty with their customer. Speaking of loyalty, do you have a loyalty program? About half of the shoppers report that they belong to a loyalty or rewards program for a retailer or shopping center, so you may want to consider it if you don’t already have one. An interesting point, Canadian shoppers report higher participation in loyalty programs (64% versus 51% for US). And as you know, we do get our fair share of visitors from the land of the maple leaf. So again, a belated Happy New Year regardless of your language and we look forward to a great 2011. Bob Dye, General Manager
