Langlade Coalition to Participate in the Healthy Wisconsin Leadership Institute

The Langlade County Health Coalition was selected to participate in the Healthy Wisconsin Leadership Institute’s Community Teams Program, a year-long leadership training program that helps prepare local residents to address their communities’ most pressing health concerns. The team will receive training and technical assistance in building stronger community partnerships, implementing sustainable change strategies and measuring their own success from national and state experts as they work to address obesity and improve wellness and prevention services and the affordability of medical care. The Langlade County Health Coalition transpired from the recent Community Health Needs Assessment, a collaborative effort led by Langlade Hospital and involved community partners including health organizations, social service agencies, schools and other educational organizations, law enforcement as well as county and local government and other local partners. The long term goal is to improve the health of the people living in Langlade Hospital’s primary patient service area which includes Langlade County and contiguous areas of the surrounding five counties. The most serious health problems in Langlade County at the present time were determined and those include: Obesity, Affordability of Health Care and Prescription Medication Costs, Substance Abuse, Wellness & Prevention. Actions plans were developed pertaining to each of the four priority areas and teams have been formed to include representatives from throughout the community. It is the goal of the Langlade County Health Coalition, which includes the members of each of the four priority teams, to implement and begin to positively impact the health problems determined over the next three years. “As our community works together to better our overall health and wellness, we need to keep in mind that health includes our physical, mental and emotional well-being. We must start to increase our focus on how to build our capacities in these three areas—not only as individuals and families, but also as whole communities,” says Carrie Kubacki, Counselor at Antigo Middle School and member of the Langlade County Health Coalition. Teams come together three times during the program for workshops held in central locations, participate in regular webinars, and also receive in-community technical assistance. Participants in the 2013-2014 program represent multiple public and private sectors, including health care and human service providers, school district representatives, local business people, community residents, public health agency representatives, academics, and public officials. The Langlade County Health Coalition team members participating in the Healthy Wisconsin Leadership Institute’s Community Teams Program includes: Ron Barger, Director/Health Officer at Langlade County Public Health Department; Kathy Bowman, Triage Registered Nurse at Aspirus General Clinic; Carrie Kubacki, School Counselor at Antigo Middle School, Nicole Kubiaczyk, Executive Assistant at Langlade Hospital; Kari Lazers, Family Living Educator at Langlade County University of Wisconsin-Extension; Patrick McKenna, M.D., Aspirus General Clinic and Dan Young, IT/ Lean Facilitator at Langlade Hospital. “I wanted to participate in the Healthy Wisconsin Leadership Institute program because it not only afforded me the opportunity to gain valuable leadership skills but also capitalize on community collaboration efforts. By bringing together and partnering with individuals from a variety of professions and agencies within the hospital service area, the team will be more prepared to recognize and respond to a wide range of health care issues and needs specific to our population. On a more personal level, I feel that belonging to such a group will provide me with a greater sense of community and help me to become a better communicator as well as community leader,” says Ron Barger, Director/Health Officer at Langlade County Public Health Department and member of the Langlade County Health Coalition. The UW School of Medicine and Public Health (UW SMPH) is partnering with the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) to provide the training. The Community Teams Program is one component of the Healthy Wisconsin Leadership Institute, a joint program of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin. The program is funded through the Wisconsin Partnership Program and Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin. The Institute is co-led by Dr. Peter Layde, of MCW and Karen Timberlake of UW SMPH.

CoVantage Returns $1.65 Million to Members

The Board of Directors of CoVantage Credit Union announced $1.65 million in patronage has been returned to the credit union’s borrowing and saving members. This represents the largest patronage payment since 2008, when the economic crisis began. Like prior years’ patronage, there are two components to the $1.65 million reward this year. A savings bonus, which provides an additional dividend based on total earnings on selected accounts during the year; and a loan interest rebate, which returns a portion of the interest paid on loans. The savings bonus has been paid for the past six years, while the loan interest rebate has been provided since 1981. According to Chuck Dallas, Chairman of the CoVantage Board of Directors, “I continue to be impressed by what CoVantage is able to do for its members. On a daily basis, the credit union provides low-cost loans, offers fair rates on deposits, and strives to ensure that all have access to services that provide financial value. To go

above and beyond by providing an additional $1.65 million in patronage is truly amazing.” The loan interest rebate returns a portion of interest paid on qualifying loans during 2013, and is provided automatically to members with real estate loans, commercial loans, auto loans, credit card loans, and nearly every type of in-house loan the credit union offers. The amounts rebated can be significant. For example, if a member paid $5,000 in interest on a home loan during the year, this year’s loan interest rebate would provide them with $225. The savings bonus provided a bonus of up to 4.5% of interest earned during 2013. It has been paid on personal and commercial savings accounts, variable rate accounts, and term share certificates. Brian Prunty, CoVantage CEO added, “Although the patronage payment confirms that CoVantage is a strong, growing credit union, 2013 did not go by without our credit union’s share of challenges. We continue to deal with more and more regulatory burdens that often test our ability to provide loans and other services to members. We also have ongoing financial assessments imposed by NCUA, our federal regulator, resulting in CoVantage paying $9.1 million over the last five years for a few corporate credit unions that failed during the recession. While these are problems CoVantage can weather, we also recognize the past few years have not been easy for members. High unemployment has some members struggling to pay back their loans, while others wrestle with low earnings on deposits. Because things haven’t been easy, giving back $1.65 million in patronage is absolutely the right thing to do.” CoVantage Credit Union is a community chartered credit union that serves members throughout Brown, Clark, Florence, Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Menominee, Oconto, Oneida, Outagamie, Portage, Price, Shawano, Taylor, Vilas, Waupaca and Wood Counties in Wisconsin; as well as in Iron and Dickinson Counties in Michigan. The financial cooperative is headquartered in Antigo, Wisconsin, and has branch offices in Shawano, Wausau, Weston, Rib Mountain, Rothschild, Rhinelander, Crandon; along with two Michigan offices in Iron River and Crystal Falls.

The Big Winter Warm Up

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

January is the time to plan home and business updates. Enhance your home or business from the inside out with the right services for home improvements.

Prepare now for these home improvement projects in the Spring

While some projects are best left to the professionals, others can be tackled even by those homeowners with little or no DIY experience. The following are a handful of projects tailor-made for spring. Inspect the gutters Gutters tend to bear the brunt of harsh winter weather, and come spring gutters are in need of inspection if not repair. Winter winds, snow and heavy rainfall can compromise the effectiveness of gutters, which can easily accumulate debris and detach from homes during winter storms. In addition, gutters sometimes develop leaks over the winter months. As a result, homeowners should conduct a careful inspection of their gutters come the spring, being sure to look for leaks while clearing the gutters of debris and reattaching gutters that might have become detached from the home on windy winter days and nights. When reattaching loose gutters, make sure the downspouts are draining away from the foundation, as gutters that are not draining properly can cause damage to that foundation and possibly lead to flooding. Take stock of roof shingles Much like its gutters and downspouts, a home’s roof can suf-

fer significant damage over the course of a typical winter. Shingles may be lost to harsh winter winds and storms, so homeowners should examine the roof to determine if any shingles were lost (lost shingles might even be lying around the property) or suffered damage that’s considerable enough to require replacement. Summer can be especially brutal on shingles, especially those that suffered significant damage during the winter. If left unchecked or unaddressed, problems with damaged shingles can quickly escalate into larger issues when spring rains and summer sun inevitably arrive, so homeowners should prioritize fixing or replacing damaged shingles as quickly as possible. Check for freeze damage Frozen temperatures can be hard on humans and homes alike, but unlike humans who can stay inside when temperatures dip below freezing, homes are forced to withstand the elements throughout the winter. External hose faucets are often susceptible to freeze damage. To inspect such faucets, turn the water on and then place a thumb or finger over the opening of the faucet. If your thumb or finger can completely stop the flow of water, the pipe where the water is coming from is likely damaged and will need to be replaced. Examine the lawn for low spots Once a lawn has thawed out, homeowners can patrol their properties looking for low spots in the yard or even low spots within spitting distance of the home’s foundation. Such spots increase the likelihood of flooding. Flooding near a home’s foundation increases the risk of potentially costly damage, while low spots on the lawn

that go ignored can make great breeding grounds for insects, including mosquitoes, when the weather warms up. When low spots are detected, fill them in with compacted soil. Compacted soil can prevent spring rains from flooding a yard or damaging a home’s foundation. Assessing potential property damage is a rite of passage for homeowners in the spring. Though some damage is significant, oftentimes even novice DIYers can work their homes and properties back into shape in time to enjoy spring and summer.

ANOTHER MIRACLE When my oldest son was 6 years old he was flipping a swing over the top of the swing set. The seat came over the top and hit him in the eye. The eye was bleeding really badly, so we rushed him to the Emergency Room where he was able to see an eye specialist. The doctor said that he may lose the sight of his eye. He had to sleep in a sitting position and take four pills every four hours. After I put the kids to bed I told God “It’s in your hands now!” A peace filled the room and I was able to sleep. Four days later I took him back to the eye doctor and he said “His eye is healed, there is NO SIGN OF DAMAGE AT ALL!” Praise the Lord for another healing MIRACLE!!

Exercises for people with arthritis

Arthritis can make physical activity more difficult. In spite of that difficulty, exercise is an important part of staying healthy for men and women with arthritis. Even moderate physical activity can strengthen bones and muscles and increase joint flexibility, making it easier for arthritis sufferers to perform daily tasks. According to the Arthritis Foundation, men and women with arthritis should commit to regular exercise that includes three types of activities: flexibility exercises, strengthening exercises and cardiovascular exercises. Consult a physician before beginning any exercise regimen, and discuss any limitations your specific condition might place on your physical abilities. Such limitations might diminish as your exercise regimen progresses, but it’s important to exercise within those limitations at the onset to avoid injuries. It’s also important to consult your physician should you experience a flare-up of arthritis before, during or after exercise. Such flare-ups might require you to alter your routine, and your physician can help

with such alterations. • Flexibility exercises: Perform flexibility exercises every day, as they will protect your joints by reducing injury risk. Flexibility exercises, which are often referred to as range-of-motion exercises, help your body warm up for more strenuous exercise. Once you’re comfortable doing at least 15 continuous minutes of flexibility exercises, you’re likely ready to add strengthening and cardiovascular exercises to your routine. Many people with arthritis find yoga is an especially effective flexibility exercise, as it strengthens and relaxes stiff muscles and even aids in weight-loss efforts. Just don’t push yourself too hard when starting out with yoga, as the exercises are more difficult than they might seem. • Strengthening exercises: Strong muscles reduce stress on the joints, something that’s especially helpful to arthritis sufferers. Strengthening exercises, also known as resistance exercises, build the body’s muscles so they’re more capable of absorbing shock and more effective at preventing injury to the joints. When performing strengthening exercises, you will use weight or resistance to make the muscles work harder and grow stronger.Isometric strengthening exercises tighten the muscles without moving the joints, while

isotonic strengthening exercises strengthen the muscles by moving the joints. The Arthritis Foundation recommends performing strengthening exercises every other day and always in conjunction with flexibility exercises, which can be performed before and after strengthening exercises. • Cardiovascular exercises: Walking, dancing, swimming and bicycling are examples of cardiovascular, or aerobic, exercises, which many people find the most enjoyable way to exercise. Cardiovascular exercises make the heart, lungs, blood vessels and muscles work more efficiently while improving endurance and strengthening bones. Initially, cardiovascular exercises might be difficult for arthritis sufferers who have not exercised in a while. However, you can gradually build toward 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise three to four times per week, and you will notice your endurance improves the more you commit and stick to your routine. Include cardiovascular exercises as part of your larger routine, performing some type of aerobic exercise after strengthening exercises. More information on exercising for people with arthritis can be found at
