<><><><><><><><><><><><><><>May 27th,2012<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Good morning! Welcome to the celebration of Pentecost Sunday. We’re glad to worship with you, and we hope you have a blessed week.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Engaging the Word 1st Reading: Acts 2: 1-11 ~ 2nd Reading: 1 Cor 12: 3b-7, 12-13 ~ Gospel: Jn 20 19-23

Last Sunday, Jesus told his disciples that the Spirit would work with them as they spread the Word of God to all nations. Today, we learn just how closely the Spirit worked with them. The feast of Pentecost reinforces our mission of spreading the Gospel message. It also assures us that God will provide us with the tools we need to show Christ’s love to others – in word and in action. On Pentecost, God reveals the universality of the Church. On Pentecost, God reveals the universality of the Church. Seventeen different regions and nations are listed in today’s first reading. Even though the early disciples gathered in Jerusalem are from different places and speak different languages, they understand one another because of the action of the Holy Spirit. In the Creed we say that we believe that the Church is both “one” and “catholic” (the word “catholic” means “universal”). Today the Catholic Church embraces people of every language and culture, and yet these more than 1 billion people are united by one faith and one Spirit.

Come, Holy Spirit fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, and You shall renew the face of the earth. O, God who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Veggies Tales Begins Today! St. Bridget’s and St. Charles parishes will show the Veggie Tales DVD series after Mass. Join us every Sunday this summer to watch this faith-based and hilarious film series. The characters – talking vegetables – teach Bible stories and share a Christian message that is easy for kids to understand. At St. Bridget’s, it will be shown in the basement. At St. Charles, it will be shown in the Icimani Ya Waste building. Snacks will also be available and, of course, parents are invited, too!

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit.”

St. Joan of Arc On May 30th, the Church celebrates the life of Joan of Arc. Born in 1412 in France, she grew up during a time when part of her country was occupied by England. She began hearing voices at the age of fourteen which told her that her mission was to “save France.” After she correctly predicted a military defeat, the commander of the French forces accepted her. She dressed in men’s clothes and reclaimed large territories of France, carrying a standard that read “Jesus, Maria.” She was eventually captured by the English, condemned as a heretic, and her voices were declared to be from the devil. She was burned at the stake, calling out to Jesus in her last moments. The Church does not claim her as a martyr for the faith, but we can hold firmly and faithfully that, like the Virgin Mary, she answered a call from God and followed the course to the bitter end. Her faith and resolve in Christ offer us great inspiration as we listen to God’s call for our own lives.
