<><><><><><><><><><><><><>February 5th, 2012<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Good morning! Welcome to the celebration of the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We’re glad to worship with you, and we hope you have a blessed week.

Engaging the Word 1st Reading: Jb 7: 1-4, 6-7 ~ 2nd Reading: 1 Cor 9: 16-19, 22-23 ~ Gospel: Mk 1: 29-39

In today’s readings, we are presented with a Problem and a Solution. The Problem is sickness. In the Gospel, we hear of many people with physical illnesses, in particular the Apostle Peter’s mother-in-law. We also hear of people possessed by demons. In the First Reading today, Job laments his own spiritual illness. He is possessed and ravaged by hopelessness. These are the Problems. The Solution is Jesus. At Capernaum, He healed many people of diseases and demons. He ventured out into the rest of Galilee and continued to heal. He did not say, “I am the Lord; I am the Messiah.” He revealed Himself through His healing love. We offer our prayers, our love, and our service this week, as Christ did, to those who are suffering physically and spiritually. If you are interested in receiving the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, contact the parish administrator, Tony Lusvardi, S.J., at 747-2496 to set up a visit.

St. Paul Miki and Companions On February 6th, the Church celebrates the life of the Japanese Jesuit Paul Miki and his fellow Japanese Christian martyrs. Between 1597 and 1640, many thousand missionaries and Japanese Christians were cruelly put to death for their faith. Despite the assurance of death, many Christians held strongly to their commitment to Christ. We celebrate these martyrs in Japan and all men and women who have suffered ridicule, torture, and death in light of their faith.
