Welcome A very warm welcome to our Autumn brochure. I am writing this in late July after a wonderful summer so far at The Roses, despite the ongoing bumpy ride that the pandemic is continuing to give us all. We’ve staged two delightful outdoor shows in perfect summery settings: (Almost) A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Oddsocks’ The Comedy of Errors staged in the beautiful surroundings of Victoria Gardens and Tewkesbury Abbey. We also finally opened our first indoor show since Christmas with the utterly lovely and downto-earth Steve Davis, who was thrilled to be at the Roses for his first live event in 16 months. I hope that by the time you read this COVID rates will be continuing to plummet and confidence rising in gathering and celebrating after a very difficult 18 months. If that is the case, we have a vibrant and packed Autumn and Winter programme for you. My big highlight is our 2021 Pantomime. We are very lucky to have had it written especially for us by comedy writing royalty Maurice Gran, the BAFTA-winning writer of Birds of a Feather, The New Statesman, Frankie Howard and Dreamboats and Petticoats. The script of King Arthur: The Panto! has already had The Roses' team crying with laughter into their morning coffees. With a fantastic cast confirmed too I have no doubt that this is going to be our best panto yet and recommend getting your tickets early!

I’m also very excited about the return of The Roses' Feel Good Festival (p. 10), a programme of online and in-person creative workshops that anyone can join. This year’s theme is an absolute favourite of mine: Musicals! Join us to learn to sing songs from your favourite shows or learn to dance like a West End star. Or, you can turn your life story into your own fabulous musical with film making and painting workshops. My other highlights are a fantastic line-up of comedians including Ed Byrne and Andy Parsons Contents – I cannot wait to share a good laugh again. We also have the extraordinary dance company Tavaziva, bringing their vibrant African dance piece to Tewkesbury for the first time. Roses favourites That’ll Be The Day return to 2 sold out nights – a huge achievement after having to move their tour 3 times! In fact, music reigns this season with lots of your favourite bands returning to our stage – the perfect antidote for our stressful times! The next year is going to reveal the true impact of the pandemic on theatre and cinema. If you are able to help us please consider donating to our 2021 campaign: Regrow The Roses. You can find out more about how your money has impact on pages 6 and 7. A big thank you to everyone who has donated so far. As ever we are hugely grateful for your support. We look forward to welcoming you into our lovely theatre soon. Jessica Brewster Director

Sat 27 Nov - Fri 31 Dec Written by Maurice Gran

(writer of Birds of a Feather)

and Nick Wilkes

(Almost A Christmas Carol)

King Arthur: The Panto! has been specially created for The Roses by Maurice Gran (the BAFTA-winning writer of Birds of a Feather and hit West End musical Dreamboats and Petticoats) and Nick Wilkes (writer of Almost A Christmas Carol and Almost A Midsummer Night's Dream). King Arthur: The Panto! tells the tale of a humble baker’s boy from Medieval Tewkesbury destined to become King of Wessex. But first he has to overcome the dragon and the evil Sir Mordred... Expect scones, stones, swords, laughter, danger, princesses, heroes, villains, dragons, wizards, magic, music, brave knights, foolish jesters and lots and lots of fun!

Appeal

Since March 2020, The Roses has been through many challenges and huge change. Closed for 75% of the time, we only made 2% of expected sales income and had to restructure our business in order to survive. Because of this our future is uncertain and we are asking, urgently, for your support.

Can you help The Roses recover and thrive? Over the last 45 years The Roses has been the centre of culture in Tewkesbury. We are the largest cultural organisation - and only theatre – in the borough, and one of the largest employers on the High Street. Run by 17 staff and over 100 volunteers, in normal times we welcome over 80,000 visitors per year and are a much-loved community centre that provides a space for people to find joy and creativity. Without us, thousands of people will be deprived of access to live theatre, live dance, live music, film and denied participation in projects for their cultural enrichment and wellbeing. Our staff have been working tirelessly behind the scenes throughout the pandemic: over the last 18 months we’ve financially supported local artists and creative practitioners; we launched our Feel Good Festival, with over 300 people taking part in a series of free creative and wellbeing workshops that built new skills and connected the community during lockdown; and commissioned and staged a wonderful two-man Christmas show that we are hoping to turn into our first ever self-produced touring show. None of this would have happened without your generous support, and we are hugely grateful to all our donors.

Why we matter As well as the eclectic mix of theatre, music, dance, talks and a nationally renowned independent film programme you see on our stage, we are nationally recognised for our participatory work with our local community and young people with a focus on creative skills and wellbeing. We host weekly and monthly creative groups including a writers group and a choir; plus knitting and painters groups, all providing vital social and creative activities every month to over 200 older people. We've also worked with many other organisations over the years, specialising in projects that reach marginalised communities. This year we will launch a new participatory department and a new group for 8-25 year olds that will provide a range of opportunities to learn performance, theatre-making, film making, gaming and backstage skills, and provide Arts Awards. We also been selected by the British Film Institute as a member of the Young Audience Generator Scheme, and have been awarded a grant to work with 16-30 year olds to improve our programme, branding and venue to be more accessible and usable for young people.

6 Box Office: 01684 295074

rosestheatre.org

Why we need your help Due to impact of Covid-19 and the unprecedented events of the last year, our future remains uncertain. Over the next year the whole theatre industry will learn the real impact of the pandemic. Whilst we were able to reopen safely in mid-May, we have continued to operate with a reduced capacity, and will need to do so until September. Managing and maintaining our building throughout this period of transition has further decimated our income, and continues to severely threaten our ability to launch our community programme, our work with young people and stage our fabulous pantomime (which you can read all about on the previous pages!).

How you can help In order to regrow, The Roses needs to raise an extra £60,000. By donating you will directly contribute to restarting our community and participatory work, like re-establishing our weekly sessions for older people crucial to preventing social isolation or helping young people, who have been hit particularly hard by the pandemic, to build new creative skills. It will also help us stage King Arthur: The Panto! that we were devastated to have to postpone from 2020. Whatever you can give, every penny will have a big impact and help our beloved theatre thrive. You can also help by sharing our campaign on social media with #RegrowTheRoses. Thank you for your support.

Cate Cody

All Above Board

“I’m old-fashioned...” sings Cate Cody in a hauntingly beautiful voice that has been compared to a young Peggy Lee.

Chaos reigns in this brandnew satirical farce of mistaken identities and disastrous decisions from the pen of Nigel Planer. An unlikely bunch of modern-day do-gooders try to make the world a better place, but lose the plot, their morals and even their underwear in the process.

“You must think me very rude; but all this is so new to me. So - this - is - a - River!” One summer afternoon in Wild Wood, while the animals sat, ate picnics and played with their friends, a mischievous ‘poop poop’ echoed in the trees... Join Mole, Ratty and Badger in a floor stomping, live music, hilarious woodland adventure as they save Toad and his shiny new motorcar from deep trouble. Award-winning theatre company Calf2Cow bring you an utterly charming theatrical experience, and brings Kenneth Grahame’s classic story dramatically to life. Let's party on down to the river bank!

She might well be describing herself, because these days it’s very rare to find a jazz chanteuse with such authentic phrasing, who genuinely understands the nuances, and is capable of capturing the idiomatic gradations and modulations required to swing. Indeed, most of the songs she has chosen to put her stamp on belong to that great age of song sophistication, coming from the pen of the masters of the art. She does full justice and breathes new life into them. Accompanying Cate are Dave Newton (voted best Jazz Pianist thirteen times) and double bass player John Day (Acker Bilk, Chris Barber).

The Glenn Miller Orchestra

Down For The Count: Legends Of Swing

We will be alright. Trust me. I’m not a politician.

Ray McVay leads the Glenn Miller Orchestra with the fabulous harmonies of the Moonlight Serenaders and the sublime vocals of Catherine Sykes and Mark Porter. Also featuring the jazz sounds of The Uptown Hall Gang - an outstanding Dixieland group drawn from members of the orchestra.

Down for the Count are a mini big band with an electrifying show full of incredible energy and musicianship. Described as “a breath of fresh air on the swing scene” they are now regularly found at jazz clubs in the UK and abroad, at festivals and on BBC Radio.

As seen on Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo, Q.I. etc. and repeated on Dave. "Cracking adlibbing… a jokerich rallying call for a better Britain" The Guardian "Coruscating live performer specialising in lacerating topical gags" The Independent "A consistently strong exposer of bull***t and a plain-speaking truth-teller through his entire career" The Guardian "Potent live performer… can nail a nonsense with beautiful economy of words" The Times

Featuring all your Glenn Miller favourites including In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade, American Patrol, Little Brown Jug, Tuxedo Junction, Chattanooga Choo Choo, I Know Why and a Rememberance to the Dambusters! Audiences of all ages will be thrilled by the sound of this amazing Big Band.

The band recreate classic tunes from the Swing Era, but this is no mere nostalgia trip – the band perform each song in their own unmistakeable style, breathing new life into the best vintage music. Combine that with the band’s top class instrumental solos, sublime vocal performances, and irresistible humour and joie de vivre, and you get a show that will leave you feeling uplifted and wanting more. “Awesome!!!” Michael Bublé

Seann Walsh: Back From The Bed Hello, Seann here. Did you know that the comedians have to write their own blurb? I find that absolutely insane. What am I meant to say? “I’m fantastic, come and look at me talk”? I don’t know. It’s me. I do stand-up.

Taking you back to the naughty 90’s are ‘5 Bad Boys with the power to Rock You’, performing over 30 number one hits from all your favourite boy bands. The boys will have you body poppin’ to party anthems like Backstreet's Back, Relight My Fire and Uptown Girl before stepping up from their stools to serenade you with ballads Flying Without Wings, A Million Love Songs and many more... cue the wind machine! So, what are you waiting for... pop on your Kangol hat, crop top and cargo pants, dust off your Nokia 8210 and call your crew as we say ‘Everybody Get Up’ for a night you’ll ‘Never Forget!’

I guess I can start with the fact I renamed the tour. Sticking with ‘Same Again?’ felt a bit triggering after the year we’ve had. So it is now called Back from the Bed. Some of the material will be the same as I had always planned and some of it will be new because it will be difficult to avoid mentioning the last year in which millions of decent people tragically lost their lives to TikTok. The Counterfeit Stones “The Most Famous Stones Band In England” (as quoted by Sir Mick Jagger himself), are once again touring the UK with a new riff packed show that’s set to leave their fans gasping. This skilfully mixed cocktail of classic hits, retro costume and humour continues to intoxicate young and old alike – 100% proof that a good shot of copyrock always hits the target.

Tarzanna Anna doesn't like the bugs in her garden, she likes things to keep things clean and tidy. But her world is turned upside down when she is magically transported to a rainforest world.

This is the band to give a huge dose of nostalgia for those who were there and an education for those who weren’t.

A mischievous bunch of wild animals take her on a journey through the jungle of her dreams, where they teach her the lessons of the wild. But when her new home is put in danger can she let go and become the wild Tarzanna she needs to be in order to save her new found friends? Tarzanna is a playful aerial theatre show for all the family to enjoy. Join the performers as they climb, jump and swing through the air. Folk Music

Edgelarks Edgelarks (Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin) embark on another tour of the unusual and adventurous. Combining exquisite folk with influences as diverse as blues, Indian classical, and beatboxing, the BBC Folk Award winners are taking their show to some equally special places. The pair take their strong roots sound, mixing original song-writing with stomping beatbox harmonica, soaring fiddle and vocal harmonies, running wilder with each repeat play. Step back in time to the golden era of music where the jukebox roared and feet didn't touch the floor. Get your dancing shoes at the ready, grab yourself a milkshake and relax - you are in for an evening of back to back hits from the 1950s and 60s! From the birth of Rock n Roll through to the Beat Group sounds of the British Invasion and beyond, the show is packed with over forty hits from the likes of Connie Francis, Brenda Lee, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Ronettes, Cliff Richard, Cilla Black and many more.

“Subtle, atmospheric and bravely original” The Guardian. “Extraordinary...I was blown away by them!” Tom Robinson, BBC 6Music

Performed by a full live band, featuring some of the country's top musicians, this incredible show features excellent vocals, tight harmonies and an infectious sense of fun.

Wishbone Ash

Genesis Connected

The quickest wits in comedy are charging into their sixth national tour with a spectacular new show that will trample your expectations. The charismatic quartet have always astonished with their ability to spin audience suggestions into comedy gold, but for this show they’re putting you, the audience, in charge in brilliant and bombastic new ways. Join comedy’s unstoppable force for an evening like no other... Hilarious scenes! Mind-blowing songs! Finely tuned anarchy! The Noise Next Door are twelve time sell-out veterans of The Edinburgh Fringe and have appeared on BBC One, ITV1, BBC Three and BBC Radio 4.

Following on from their hugely successful 50th Anniversary Celebratory Tour in 2019, Wishbone Ash return to these shores eager to carry on where they left off. Demonstrating why they still remain one of the busiest bands in rock, after over half a century of playing their unique brand of music around the world, they’ll be performing such classics as The King Will Come, Throw Down The Sword & Blowin’ Free, along with material from their illustrious back-catalogue of albums. Don’t miss out on a night of fabulous music and outstanding musicianship from a band whose iconic, twin-guitar sound influenced groups from Thin Lizzy to Iron Maiden.

“Hilarious... A superior kind of chaos” Telegraph “Phenomenal” Daily Mirror

Returning by popular demand after sell-out appearances in 2018 and 2020, this is a tribute show celebrating the Hits of Genesis and the biggest selling acts connected: Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins and Mike & the Mechanics. The show has an incredible mix of material, from atmospheric anthems to chart toppers. Hits spanning from the late 70s onwards including; Turn It On Again, Sledgehammer, In The Air Tonight, Over My Shoulder, Against All Odds, Solsbury Hill, I Know What I Like, You Can’t Hurry Love, The Living Years and many more. The frontman, Pete Bultitude, is not only an incredibly versatile vocalist, he is also a truly gifted drummer just like Phil Collins, so expect the show to include the iconic “double drums” element as featured on every Genesis and Phil Collins tour.

Ballet

The Nutcracker Russian National Ballet returns to The Roses to enchant you with their delightful production of The Nutcracker; one of the jewels of Tchaikovsky's repertoire. The original Christmas story is based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King written by E.T.A. Hoffmann. It tells the story of Marie, a sad little girl, whose godfather, Drosselmeier, gives her a Nutcracker doll as a present on Christmas Eve. In her lively imagination it turns into a prince and the magic starts. The ballet is the ultimate fairy-tale where goodness and beauty triumph. This eternal seasonal favourite will be an unforgettable journey in the run-up to Christmas and an ideal introduction to audiences of any age to the magic that is classical ballet.
