RSA’s boost for Horsham FC

News in Brief

challenging times.” Mark Christer, managing director of RSA, said: “We are really proud to support our local football club here in Horsham. “It is really important that the club invests in providing the best for its team now and in the future. We really look forward to welcoming Horsham FC to their new home.” The Resident spoke to six people at RSA to arrange a photograph in the company’s office yesterday (Thursday), only to be told eventually that this was not possible at short notice due to health and safety rules affecting visitors.

Former chartered accountant Deryck Wright has succeeded Tom George as president of Horsham Lions Club. It is a third spell in the role for Mr Wright, from Southwater, who has been a member of the club for 36 years. He said: “My aims are to increase club membership and boost our income from fundraising events to enable us to donate more to good causes. I am pleased that the focus of our activities this year will be on helping young people.” For more information about Lions Club grants, visit www.horshamlions. freeuk.com

Horsham’s largest employer has given a major boost to Horsham Football Club in its fight for a new ground. Hornets chairman Kevin Borrett said in May: “Our contract for the purchase of the Holbrook Club allows RSA to take 50 per cent of any profit achieved from the disposal of the Holbrook Club within five years of our purchase (in 2007). “If any amount had to be paid to the RSA then we could not afford to build the new ground and sustain the offer made to the Holbrook Club, rendering the scheme unviable.” Now RSA has decided to waive the clause, giving the football club an

opportunity to redevelop part of the Holbrook site early without incurring any financial penalties.

The club is working on plans for a new ground elsewhere in Horsham. An application will be submitted to Horsham District Council in the next few months. Mr Borrett said on Wednesday:

“This is no longer a dream, this is a reality, and we are excited at the prospect of moving to a new home for our team in 2013-14. “We are extremely grateful to RSA for not only allowing us to work towards our goal but also assisting us in securing the long-term future of the club.” John Lines, chief executive of Horsham FC, said: “We are absolutely delighted that RSA has taken this course of action. It will help us develop our vision for the future by building a ground that the club and the town will be proud to be associated with. “This will provide a muchneeded boost for the team in these

Campaigners happy with reprieve for the 86 bus Continued from Page 1 “The points they raised as areas for concern are exactly those we presented in our meeting on June 8. “We are extremely pleased that our points have been properly ‘heard’ as we had feared they would fall on deaf ears. “The county has therefore had no choice but to remove the 86 from the initial phase of cuts and its subsidy remains until April 2012. We are very pleased with this outcome. “All along we have been realistic about the need for the council to

make savings in this difficult economic time, but had complained that the timeframe was unrealistic for our community to put together a sustainable alternative. “The county council has indicated they will work with us to find a solution by discussing commercial options and community services. “We look forward to doing this and will be happy to see our local council representatives being able to take a proactive role in supporting the community that elected them.” Cllr Andrew Dunlop, district councillor for Cowfold, Shermanbury and

West Grinstead, said: “There was a sensible recognition that time is required to come up with a solution that works for the community.” The 98 Roffey to Southwater service and the 106 Steyning to Worthing are among other services that were previously threatened with reductions or cuts but have been spared until at least April. A full list of cuts is available on our website, www.the-resident.co.uk Cllr Pieter Montyn, council Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Decisions such as these are not easy to make. But we simply have to

make these savings and unfortunately some supported services will have their subsidies withdrawn. “We received a huge response rate to our impact assessment. Many people were asking us for more time so that alternatives and other options could be explored. “Where possible we have done our best to offer this and as a result many of the changes in the first phase of reductions will now take effect early next year.” The council says it is actively working with bus companies to look for other ways to keep buses running.

Bags of cash Shoppers can support Cancer Research UK by taking unwanted goods to Tesco, Broadbridge Heath, on August 6-7. Tesco spokesman Pauline Stevens said: “We’re delighted to be hosting the donation station, particularly as all donations will be going to support our local Cancer Research UK stores. “Unfortunately, many of us have been affected by cancer to some extent and the impact can be felt by almost everyone. I know the people of Horsham will pull together and donate all they can to this very worthy cause.” Items that can be donated include good-quality clothing, accessories, quality homewares, books, CDs, DVDs and mobile phones. Jessica Garman, of Cancer Research UK, said: “We’d like to thank Tesco’s Extra for allowing us to hold our donation station with them. “We hope people will take advantage of this easy way to donate and have a clearout, while lending their support to a great cause.”

Protester jailed The son of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour was jailed for 16 months for his rampage at a student fees protest in London last December. Charlie Gilmour, 21, from Billingshurst, admitted violent disorder after hanging from a Union Flag on the Cenotaph and jumping on to a car in a royal convoy. He was also found to have hurled a rubbish bin at the vehicle. After he was pictured on the Cenotaph, the student apologised for his “terrible insult” to the war dead.
