Welcome to the last issue of the magazine for 2012, it hasn’t been the best of years, weather wise, over here in the UK with quite a few events cancelled. So, we are all hoping for a much more settled year in 2013. I have recently returned from a couple of trade shows and you’ll find that I have added a few more traders and groups to the listings as well as a new Country-Welcome to Serbia! Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this magazine-without your support it would not be possible. Congratulations to all of you who were lucky enough to win one of last month’s competitions prizes-There are 2 new competitions this month so get your answers in to me! I need more articles from all over the world so if you have something you would like to share with the re-enactment world please do get in contact at the normal email address with details! Dmitriy Shalimov: What is DZKh?
DZKh – this abbreviation is known by every reenacter in Ukraine. Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya, Kharkiv, - the cities where guys live created one of the most famous abbreviations in Ukrainian reenactment. Everyone knows this alliance and likes this alliance. They participate all the rating events, organize their tournaments, a big part of the national team of Ukraine wear white-blue colors of DZKh. Many people got so used to the name DZKh that forgot about the clubs which actually constitute this alliance. Every club, every alliance has its history. Let’s speak about the history of the alliance with the person who has been in the alliance from the very beginning, the person well known by all reenacters in Ukraine, prizewinner of many tournaments and top fighter of the Ukrainian national team Dmitriy Shalimov. Igor: Dmitriy, where and when did you start your reenactment? Dmitriy: For me everything started from the tournaments in 2006. It was the same time as we visited role-playing games. We tried to make good armor at once as much as it was possible. The minimal reenactment costume was made at summer 2008 – we were going to Sudak (a reenactment festival “Helm of Genoa”). And in a year everyone already decided to do reenactment seriously. Igor: What was your first club? Tell something about it. Dmitriy: The first time, when we just started we were training with different people, but as the result we started to train with people who organized NAKKN with us (NAKKN – abbreviation which means in Ukrainian “not existing association of clubs that never existed” – yeah, guys do have sense of humor), then it was renamed into “Bastion”. So it is the same club.
Igor: Who and when decided to create DZKh? What was the reason? Dmitriy: Everything started at the “Day of Kyiv” (the festival that takes place every year in Kyiv). There we created a “5 vs 5” team of the members of our club, “Wild Swans” and “Sparta”. These three clubs created DZKh. We and “Wild Swans” are mainly oriented to Europe middle of the 14th century, “Sparta” – to Mongols. All of us fitted the alliance very well, we complemented one another. We have the emperor of DZKh - Aleksey Perebeynos, and of course the captains of the clubs which constitute the alliance.
Igor: Did you organize any events? Dmitriy: “Sparta cup” was organized by our “Spartans” (I think several times), “Stalevi Porogy” in 2011 (in Zaporizhzhya), and we also helped to organize many tournaments (especially Oleg Podluzhny, Gordon, I and Nikolay Shalimov). We have the main goal – to popularize historical medieval combat and our alliance, and of course we have some sport interest. In fact all the events in Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhya and Dnipropetrovsk are run with the assistance of DZKh. They both participate and help to organize the events. Oleg Podluzhny for example often becomes the marshal or even the master of the tournament, as it was at “Morgenstern” in Dnepropetrovsk and at “Stalevi Porogy” in Zaporizhzhya. Guys support the movement and help it to develop. Igor: How do you assess the current state of your alliance now? Dmitriy: DZKh is one of the strongest alliances in Ukraine now both in “1 vs 1” and massive fights. We all have friendly relations, we try to have rest together if possible. I think that’s why people want to get to our alliance. And moreover it is easier that way to get experience and go to the events. But there are very few new and prospective fighters, and this is the trend for the entire Ukraine, and that doesn’t please at all. Few clubs enter our alliance, I think that was only “Zurich” from Dnipropetrovsk, usually just new people come.
Igor: What are the goals of you alliance now? What plans do you have for the future? Dmitriy: The first goal is to be the best (laughning). For this–to increase our level in fighting and in re-enactment. The main goal – is to perform better at the international events, because the war is tougher there. The second thing is of course we want historical medieval combat to become a real kind of sport. All the time we try to look for the new young prospective fighters for the development of our alliance and the national team of Ukraine.
Igor: What are the greatest achievements of your alliance? Dmitriy: The main one is the second place in “5 on 5” at the “Battle of the Nations 2010”. We did everything possible and impossible for it. Later was the fourth place at the “Kubok vyzova” (“Cup of challenge”) in Minsk, where in fact the same teams participated. Also Podluznhy, Nikolay Shalimov and I have victories at international tournaments (in Grunwald,
Lida, Lublin). And we usually participate in the championship of Ukraine in BelgorodDnestrovskiy and the elimination tournaments to the national team. Igor: Which clubs in Ukraine do you think are your main opponents? Dmitriy: In Ukraine the strongest clubs are “Sharukhan” and “Evrosoyuz” (Eurounion) and they constantly prove it at the elimination tournaments. We try to be equal to them and that way all the teams improve. In tournaments and professional fights “Ayna-Bera”, ”Tangar” and “Vityaz” (former “Tamerlan” form Sumy) fight well. Actually all people participating in the elimination tournaments are good fighters, they constantly improve. It is “Chorna Galych”, “Samarkand”, “AKRA”, “Podilska Khorugv” and others. It is very obvious now that the members of the national team fight much better than those who don’t go to the tournaments. Igor: What would you advise to the new clubs, that recently appeared, which mistakes to avoid, where to put accent? Dmitriy: To train. And to participate in as many events as possible, to use every possibility. That way people start to understand what is important, what level they should reach, what they should do. Everyone needs to get experience. As Dmitriy noticed correctly being the member of the national team influences greatly the level of the fighters – they feel responsibility, they try to visit more rating events and of course it influences their fighting skills. Then they return home and prepare the youngsters better, which in their turn go to the elimination tournaments to fight for the right to become the member of the national team. And in DZKh there are many members of the national team, they participate in “5 on 5”, “21 on 21” and “1 on 1”. And the fourth place of Oleg Podluzny, fighter from DZKh, at the “Battle of the Nations”, the fourth place of “Ukraine1” team in “5 on 5” (half of the team is from DZKh) are good proofs of their level. DZKh is a rather young alliance, but already very experienced. Competition One "Stand and deliver," shouts the masked highwayman while blazing flintlocks shatter the summer night. TYBURN begins on the quiet London Road west of Canterbury. The Dover Stagecoach blocks the lane, its hitch of four horses cut loose. The driver, mail guards, and passengers lie dead or wounded. The chained strongbox, containing 50,000£ in gold and banknotes, is missing. Hours later, a band of armed riders clatters to a halt, horses steaming from the ten mile gallop. One horseman trots forward. “Black deeds afoot, Sir Nicodemus,” Constable Rakestraw calls to the Lord High Sheriff of Kent, “The survivor swears it was that Irish devil Captain Fitzgibbon who caused this wicked mischief.” Nicodemus Skellington slides a half-cocked dragoon pistol back into a saddle holster. Turning, he orders his mounted deputies to continue the pursuit. The tall Sheriff winces as he dismounts. Skellington, cane in hand, approaches the stagecoach. Treading among the bloody corpses, he jabs the walking stick about in the high grass. He finds a woman’s yellow straw hat splattered in gore. “Murdering jackals,” vows Skellington, “they will rue this day they prowled in Kent.” TYBURN follows Sir Nicodemus Skellington, and his mysterious associates, The Shadows, as they pick up the trail of the fleeing outlaws. Skellington is closing in. TYBURN whisks you through the sounds, smells, and tastes of 18th century England. You enter the country inns, brothels, abbeys, prize rings, gaming dens, theaters, and coffee houses. You hear the whores, thugs, boxers, gamblers, actors, publicans, outlaws, and clergy as they tell the story in speech and in letters. TYBURN places you amidst the crowds on Hanging Day in London. In Newgate, the condemned, nooses round their necks, are loaded into carts. The throngs are massing at the gallows. Time is running out. At TYBURN, Jack Ketch, the hangman, awaits. Tyburn-PRELUDE C-Cling! C-Clang! It is the ringing of the cowbell that causes them to pause. Running a stagecoach headlong into a herd of grazing animals in the dark will invite wreck, ruin, and maybe death. The stagecoach driver eases back on the reins. As the team of horses struggle to stop, the great carriage wheels slowly roll forward. C-Cling! C-Clang! Loose roaming livestock is a daily hazard to those making the trek overland on the narrow country roads. Cattle and sheep all seem to have a bad habit of nibbling on the fresh grass on the sides of the lane. The smartest ones in the herd plot their escape moves at each presented opportunity. A carelessly unlocked gate yields to the probing pressure of a one ton body, or the same heavy animal crashing their way through a poorly repaired or broken fence rail. Once the restricting walls are breached, the rest of the herd or flock scramble their way to freedom; following slowly in the wake of the plucky and intrepid leader. In just a few moments, a major road is blocked, full of happily munching cows, sheep, or geese. C-Cling! C-Clang! The loud clanging or the bell is the first sign of trouble, and it comes suddenly out of the darkness ahead in the road. There is a big brown cow in the lane. There probably are more frisking about. The driver ponders that fact now as the slowing coach approaches the animal. C-Cling! C-Clang! The cowbell rings softly. “God damn it, and here we are, late already. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, would you just look at that,” says the coachman to his company guard seated beside him, “when we stop, you hop down, Silas, and push that bloody cow out of the road.” The large stagecoach, with a team of four, is making good time tonight through the North Yorkshire countryside. They are carrying a strongbox, and with it, a York-Leeds Express Company armed guard. If they had mail, there would be an additional armed guard, a member of the Royal Mail Post Office, riding on the rear of the coach. They have left Tadcaster, crossed the stone bridge spanning the River Wharfe, and are two miles past the village of Islington. C-Cling! C-Clang! They are on the old Roman road, the very one that led to the fort city of Yboracum, the City of the Legions. Now that old Roman fortress has grown into the City of York. It is home of the great York Minster Cathedral. The City of York, guarding the north approaches to Scotland. The next coach stop will be at the ‘Stamford Bridge’ Coaching Inn, in York; the last stop of the night. And a longed for rest. The stagecoach rolls to a halt. C-Cling! C-Clang!
The Express Company armed guard, Silas Pierce, climbs down from the driver’s seat and walks up the lane. He carries a double-barreled coach gun with him, his right hand on the triggers. It is very dark and quiet. In the middle of the road, right in from of him, is a very large cow. A dairy cow she is, by the look of the enormous udders sticking out between the rear legs. The cow’s broad back is to him. He walks around to the front and is immediately startled. Silas sees the cow has been tethered with black ropes to an iron stakes bounded into both sides of the road. “Someone, a simple-minded ploughboy, asleep in the bushes, has tethered this cow here deliberately,” he thinks to himself, “The yokel must have gotten tired taking her into Islington for morning market. Well, at least, we can get back on our way.” “It’s only one cow, Charlie,” Silas calls, “I will lead it off to the side till you get by.” The guard pulls his hammers back to half-cock, and lays the shotgun on the ground. He then unties the left hand rope, and with a gentle push, the cow moves to the right of the road. Silas Pierce notices something which causes his blood to run cold and the hairs to rise on the back of his neck. He tries to yell out, but is frozen in fright. This cow has no bell around her neck. “STAND AND DELIVER!” Click. It is the unmistakable sound of the hammer of a flintlock being pulled to full-cock. “Stand and deliver,” orders a voice again from the woods nearest the road, “Your money, gentlemen, or your life? It matters not to me, gentlemen. Please raise your arms. Keep your hands where I can see them.” A horseman moves out of the shadow of the trees and into the road, blocking the coach’s progress. He has a large bronze cowbell in one hand. “Is this what you are looking for?” the rider asks as he clangs it twice, “Bossie there, was only too pleased to let me borrow it.” The tethered cow moos a greeting in return. Laughing, the highwayman tosses it before him into the road. C-Cling! C-Clang! The large bell rings for the last time as it hits the ground and goes still. The single reddish-brown cow continues its repast, undeterred by rider or coach. With a same smooth motion the highwayman pulls another pistol from his pommel holster. “Stand and deliver!” the rider says for the third time, his voice growing cold, “Please, no foolishness, gentlemen. If you care to live out the next two minutes, you will pay close heed to what I say. Get your hands up. NOW!” The rider is holding two great flintlock horse pistols in his gloved hands, arms extended, aimed directly at the driver. Each passing second brings him closer, closer, until he is directly in front of the stopped Leeds-York Transport Company Stagecoach. The coach driver can see that this highwayman has on a broad-brimmed black hat with one side pinned up, a white and black ostrich plume adorns it. He is wearing a mask; it covers his face from the nose up, and is tied in the back. His shirt linen and cravat are white or maybe ivory in the poor light. The outlaw is wearing a muted crimson waistcoat under a dark blue frock coat. He is well mounted on a powerfully built black horse. His steed has a white star blaze and two white stockings. Another brass end of a pistol butt shows, tucked into his high right boot, just below his tobacco colored breeches.
“Whoa, hold up there,” the driver cries out as he pulls back on the reins, “Whoa. Christ Almighty, it’s another bloody toby-man! Is that you again, ‘Captain Fitzgibbon?’ Whoa, I said, by Jesus. Whoa.” The nervous guard is debating whether he can retrieve the dropped coach gun and discharge a barrel or two, before the approaching highwayman sees him and puts a pistol ball through his eye. This is only his second ride as a guard. “Dia duit. Good evening to you, Master Charles Grinder” calls the highwayman, “you recognize me now, not just a bold rogue who stuck you up last time with ‘two pops and a galloper’ as I recall your very words from reading the broadside. By God, it is a fine, clear night out. The moon is full. We have been waiting here for almost an hour. You are late, man. I almost thought, be gad, Old Charlie’s chucked it in for the night, and settled down in Tadcaster. It’s been a few months since the last time we have crossed paths. Last fall it was, mid-November comes to mind, sometime before Christmas, which I recall. So, let’s not have any trouble. I see your guardsman, by his jinky looks, is having thoughts about being a hero and collecting a big reward for yours truly. He must be a new man, Charlie. I hope you can convince him otherwise, don’t risk it young friend. Don’t reach for it. Faith man, that cheap bastard of a magistrate in Leeds won’t pay your poor widow a penny for you playing the hero, neither will the York-Leeds Transport Company. Besides, my Deb is right beside you, and pray, make no mistake, my buckos, she will put a musket ball clear through both of you in two shakes of a lamb’s tail. Show ‘em the gun, lass, in case they are thinking about being bold.” The highwayman, using the pistol in his left hand, indicates the presence of his accomplice, as Charlie in the seat and the guard in the road both glance to their right. Standing on the left side of the road, beside the coach, is another armed bandit. This outlaw is holding a brand-new, Dragoon’s Short Land Pattern Musket. The cavalry musket fires a big ball, almost three quarters of an inch in diameter. The end of its black barrel is three feet from the young guard, Pierce. To the two startled coachmen, it looks like a cannon’s mouth at such close range. The outlaw on foot moves closer to the coach. The side lamps give both coachmen a better look. “Well I’ll be damned, ‘Fitzgibbon’,” says the coachman in disbelief, “it is a woman. Do women and cows make up your gang, now? Having a bit of trouble recruiting dishonest men, ‘Captain’?” Upon closer inspection both coachmen can see the other bandit is a young woman, dressed in mans garb, from the high boots to the dark brown, wide-brimmed hat. She is wearing a tightfitting, Spencer-styled jacket. She stands motionless, musket cocked and on her shoulder, her finger resting on the trigger. A redhead she is, by the look of her curls spewing out from under her dark satin mask in the side coach lamps. She has a pistol stuck in her belt. “It had been a good evening up until now,” replies Charles Grinder, the coachman bowing slightly, “I thought you had absconded for greener pastures, ‘Captain Fitzgibbon’, after they chased you and your last gang of thieves and murderers all over Leicestershire two months ago, Not much in the strongbox, though, I trust you do not believe me.” “First, coachman, throw your other weapons down on the ground, slowly,” says the redhead coolly, “I know you are carrying more than one gun, so do not be foolish enough to tempt me or try my patience. On the other side of the coach, slowly now, then keep your hands up.” The driver slowly, carefully takes a pistol from his belt, holding it by the barrel, drops its down onto the edge of the road. Both men keep their arms raised. “Good. Now we will have that box behind you. Get up there lad, and give him a hand. Hop up, we have not got all bloody night. Toss it down. Be quick about it,” says the woman
curtly, “and no clever moves, my brave hell-drivers, or you know what you will get. We don’t have all night. “ Watching the disarmed guard climb up to the driver’s seat, the woman walks to the discarded coach gun and kicks it out of the way. She then backs up three steps, her musket trained on the coach door. “And the rest of you lot in the coach, get out here. And I will trouble you for your valuables,” the red head orders, “Step out, smartly and stay in the lamps so I can see you. Any sudden moves and I shoot. With your hands up, if you please.” The door swings open, at her command, and three middle-aged men tumble out of the coach. They stand quietly in a row under the side lamps, arms raised. Up on top, comes the rusty sound of a chain being pulled and a lock opened. The scratchy sounds of metal on wood split the night as Pierce and Grinder drag the strongbox over the edge of the coach. “Hurry up, Charlie,” replies Captain Fitzgibbon, “you don’t want to be late taking these fine gents into town. Tip it over, man.” The strongbox hangs for a second on the edge. Teetering. The heavy strongbox plummets eight feet to the ground. The box, instead of striking the soft earth, hits a large rock, part of the old Roman road, and breaks open with a stunning crash. The contents, papers and bags of coin scatter all over the road. The noise of the crash is so loud, the lead horses startle, and leap off in their traces. The stagecoach rushes forward with the unbalanced drivers holding on for dear life. They shoot off down the road towards York, side lamps quickly vanishing over a nearby hill. In a moment, it is all quiet. This odd happenstance has left the passengers in the dark with the bandits. Captain Fitzgibbon barely has time to duck out of the way, and no one to shoot at, as his horse rears up under him. “Damn,” whistles Fitzgibbon, looking at the vanishing side-lamps of the stagecoach, hellbent on the York Road, “I have never seen the likes of that, Lord bless me, I was almost run over. That runaway ‘thoroughbraces’ went past me like it had wings. Well, I can’t help that. They will fetch the law on us shortly anyway. If you kind gentlemen will pick up the booty and put it in this bag. Then, hand it to the lady there, we will trouble you no more this evening, specially seeing your ride has left you high and dry. Marooned, as it were, taking in the summer airs, in the pleasant company of outlaws, and a most hungry cow.” The Captain puts one of his pistols in its holster. He reaches into his saddle bag, fumbles about, and tosses an empty, stained cotton sack towards the three passengers. “Pick it yourself, Paddy,” replies one of the men lowering his arms at the same time, “damned brigands. I for one have had more than enough of your jokes and sass. I am an alderman in Islington. I am sick of you fatherless rogues terrorizing innocent and lawabiding citizens; making a ‘living’ off the backs and hard labors of others. You are leeches, sir; stealing the very bread from decent folk’s, from women and children’s mouths. Damn you, Captain Fitzgibbon, for the lazy scoundrel and villain that both of you are. You and this Irish slut here can both be cursed to Perdition. I will be sure the Sheriff of York is made well aware of this, lest you mean to kill us, and add more murders to your slate. I will have the consta-” The woman strikes him behind the knees with a whip of the musket barrel, causing him to lose his balance and fall face forwards. She hits him on the head with the butt of the gun. “Tá mé ar buille, toll. Jesus bloody Christ, shut the hell up,” she screams at the fallen man as she stands over him menacingly, “Dún do bheal, you overstuffed blowhard. Go hifreann leat! Shut up!” Turning quickly, she sticks the musket barrel into the closest passenger’s cheek, “Didn’t I just tell you nitwits to keep your hands up and your traps shut. You two, able, spry fellows, will
pick up these papers and money, as bloody quick as rabbits mind you, and put it in this bag, or your pea-brains will be all over the road. Make your choice, gentlemen? Try me, if you feel valorous.” The two men look at each other, then at the man on the ground. One man, chins shaking, gets the sack off the ground, and the other fills it rapidly. Within a minute, in the light of the moon, they are done. The taller one holds out the sack to the woman. “Hand it up to the Captain,” she smiles, stepping back, and bringing the musket up to her shoulder, “slowly. No tricks.” The man hands the loaded cotton bag up to the mounted man. And steps back to the others. Both men raise their arms back up. “Well done. You are two smart fellows; now pick him up,” the woman gestures with the barrel of the gun, “Alderman may be too low a situation for your friend, such a fine speechmaker, he needs to run for Parliament. On your way, my fine gentlemen, start walking down the lane, after the bloody coach. We will give you five minutes head start and then we start shooting. May I trouble you to take your watch out, Captain?” The mounted man chuckles, and retrieves his watch from his vest pocket. He clicks the cover open. “Aye, it is now, well, would you look at that, five minutes exactly till midnight,” says the Captain laughing, “Move, my fine fellows. My patience with this encounter is over. I expect to see your backsides over yonder hill in two minutes, or by God, I will ride you down and shoot you myself. Dead dogs don’t bite.” The two men pick up the one knocked down by the woman and stand for a moment as if unsure of what they had just heard. “Move damnit,” the woman screams as she fires her musket into the air over their heads, “Tog ort! Run you clods. Run!” That is the last straw. Running, half-dragging the woozy alderman between them, the trio of unlucky passengers takes off down the road towards York as fast as their legs will carry them. “Damn me, Deb,” says the Captain laughing, “you fecking well scared the hell out of me. I thought those poor fellows would piss their pants when that gun went off. We forgot to rob those lads, what a couple of turnips we are. Fetch your mare, now, Debbie. We must be off.” In the distance, a church bell in Copmanthorpe is ringing. Dogs start barking at their interrupted sleep. Within half an hour, an armed band of fifteen men heads west. It takes them twenty minutes of hard riding to get to the scene of the ambush. Several riders carry torches. The aged Lord High Sheriff of York, Squire Thomas Forbes, reins in the posse. The group stays behind him, guns at the ready. Charlie Grinder is among them, acting as a guide. “They were right about here, sir,” whispers Grinder as he points, “came right out of that patch of woods there. That brake of woods there, that’s where Fitzgibbon was; the hellcat came out to the woods on this side.” “You men stay here, and be ready for mischief” orders the Sheriff, “Simmons, come with me. Hold our horses. All the rest of you men put your guns on half-cock, damnit. I will not be shot in the back by a bunch of nervous nellies.” The Sheriff and one of his deputies get down off their horses and walk up the middle of the lane. Squire Forbes is holding a pistol out in front of him. Simmons, the deputy, carries a carbine and a lantern. After a few seconds, Forbes signals the rest of the men forward. They dismount and slowly walk up the lane. The discarded strongbox sits broken and empty. The Sheriff reaches down and grabs something shiny in the grass. He holds up it for all the men to see.

CHAPTER 1 JULY 13th, 1746 Scene I –House of Agnes, Canterbury BONG! The small girl tending her flock of hens counts, “One.” The ancient Cathedral dominates the Canterbury skyline, even in twilight. It is a soft evening. BONG! The troop of streetlamp lighters have just started their evening rounds, “Two.” The great bells chime out, and then strike the hour. The clear, deep musical sounds booming out over the town. BONG! The four seminarians are pulling on the great ropes in the bell tower. The sexton is keeping count of the rings, “Three.” Everyone within earshot notes the time; this long summer day is drawing to a close. BONG! The men in the pastures pick up their crooks, hoes, and scythes and make their way home, counting along with the bells, “Four.” The venerable Canterbury Cathedral, this massive stone communal ‘clock’, serves all who live within the sound of its mighty voice, telling the time for centuries. BONG! The praying cluster of ardent pilgrims hoping against hope for cures, hears the call of the great bronze bell. “Five.” All around the Cathedral, ringed by a spoke of churches, the other chapel bells chime in after the leader finishes. BONG! A young wife is struggling with a difficult birth; above the pain she too counts the bells. “Six.” Outside of ‘House of Agnes,’ Canterbury’s most famous inn and stagecoach depot, four sweating and laboring stable hands pay no attention to the hour or the scenery; they are heavily engaged with the teams for the Dover Coach. BONG! The sweating stable-boy hurries past with the huge clopping carriage horse, only a few more to go to complete the six-team hitch, and then home. “Seven.” In the wide courtyard of the historic inn, one team of men is unhitching the team of six heavy horses from the coach, and leading them one at a time around back to the stables. Another group of grooms is bringing in and hitching up a new team. The coachman is watching every part of the evolution; one eye on the stable hands and the other his coach and its valuable strongbox. BONG! The testy driver looks at his watch; this evolution of the change-out of the team is taking much too long. He is trying to get back on schedule as he notes the hour. ”Eight.” Eight o’clock.
“Be careful there, you apple-knockers,” calls out the reddening coachman, “take a care you clumsy bumpkins!” “Watch what you are doing, shit-kickers!” In the well lit dining and public rooms, all is quiet and orderly; orders are taken and delivered, servers moving gracefully in and out of the kitchen. It takes on a rhythm of its own. Here is a scene and players that Chaucer would easily recognize; little has changed inside since his time. The wooden and plaster interiors of all the rooms are darkened with age. Other than the modern cut and style of the clothes, one gets a real glimpse of the 14th century. A few local patrons, and the usual smattering of clergy and pilgrims, mixed in with the passengers and crew of the Dover Coach. The coach’s uniformed guards are seated right at the bar, grabbing a quick bite and downing several glasses of the local stout. As quick as the barkeep can pull the tap it seems, glasses are filled, drained, and filled again. “Can I pull another glass of the draft for you gents? The same is it? Maybe the next glass of something a little lighter,” even the barman is amazed at the speed that the glasses are emptied, “how would you like to sample our fine ale?” Two empty glasses thump on the top of the bar as one. “Lord, that there belch will wet one’s whistle. Smooth, it goes down the hatch. Let’s try some of the ale, Ned,” replies Tom as he wipes his mouth with the back of a dirty sleeve, at the same time pushing silver coins toward the man with his other hand, “otherwise, ‘Dickie’ will be out of sorts if we look a tad seasick.” Tom Brown is dressed in the stained uniform of the Royal Mail Post Office Guard. His companion, Ned, mouth full of bread and cheese, can only wink and nod. Ned is the Dover Mail Coach Express Guard, and is attired in their livery. The barkeep grabs two tankards and fills them to overflowing with the local favorite, ‘Kent Nut-Brown Ale’. Tom sips and his eyes roll back in delight. “May the Lord bless and keep me,” says Ned smacking his lips loudly, “I could drink a tun, a bloody hogshead of that.” “God save the King,” toasts Tom as he stands wobbly and raises his glass, “ruin and damnation to the poxy French. God save good King George.” A few of the others in the room stand and repeat the same words. Down the hallway, near the entrance, a serving girl places the two mugs of cold cider directly in front of the two men seated at a small table. Through the front window, they have been watching the changing of the horses, and the cursing of the coachman at their inept handling of the powerful steeds. His voice carries inside. “By thunder, if you drop that harness in the shit one more time,” screams the coachman, “I will put a boot in all of your country asses. Be careful, yokels, that there rig costs fucking money. So clean it up proper, or I will be having words with your masters. And step lively, we can’t be waiting here all night while you take your own blasted time. By the Power of the Almighty, boy, don’t let him piss on the reins. Pick them up. Pick them up, and hand them to me.” Both seated men, strangers till this day, are passengers on the coach. They glance outside the paned glass window; the younger of the two men reddening at the harsh language. The older man, extremely well-dressed by the quality of his shoes, and the cut and material of his linen, waistcoat, and suit, is listening and slowly puffing on a long pipe. The other younger fellow, a clergyman by his clothes and collar, is very animated as he continues a story. The young maid removes the two empty mugs and backs away, with a nod and smile from the older man. “That’s all for us, my dear,” he replies slipping her a crown, “Thank you.” She smiles, bobs a little curtsy and leaves the two men alone.
“Pray continue, Vicar,” the older man gestures with his pipe, “it’s not often I hear firsthand tales from America, even from the wilds of northern New Hampshire, here in England. This is most refreshing and illuminating.” “Most of the folk in the area had come to seek shelter inside the walls. The majority of the inhabitants are women and children. Everyone was there for the monthly militia muster. But even so, there were only thirty men or so, of us inside the fort when the arrows came over the walls,” says Reverend Alfred Matthews, “fire arrows by the dozens. I was in the chapel, candles lit for Pentecost, and holding vespers when it began. I was not quite sure of what was going on, as I glanced up, attracted by the lights in the sky through the window glass. I thought at first it was shooting stars. Upon hearing their unholy shrieks and the flaming missiles, I dropped my prayer book, rushed up the aisle, and began pulling on the bell rope with all my strength. Men dropped their hymnals and quickly rushed to their posts; the women after putting their children in the underground powder magazine for safety, loaded muskets and fetched water. Captain Phineas Stevens was a whirlwind; sending half the men to fetch buckets to extinguish the numerous fires, while the other half, yours truly among them, manned the parapets and kept up a hot fire on the savages. Several of the buildings, sheds, and corncribs were already ablaze.” The minister, a man in his late twenties, speaks with an odd accent to the older man’s ear. Sir Edmund Rose never can get use to the way the Americans speak. It is English, but the timbre and flow is so different. It is as hard on his ear, to his cultured speech, as the voice of a Yorkshire shepherd, or a Welsh or Cornish miner. These distinct accents easily identify the speaker, but are odd to listen to just the same, at least it is to Sir Edmund who spends days at Court among the wellborn. “They kept a steady volley of musket and flaming arrows all night long. The Fort had clear lines of fire for fifty yards, so the foe was carrying their attack at long range. I could see several of the French among the savages, highlighted in their campfires. They were in full uniform. The attack was mostly conducted by the natives, but one could glimpse the white and blue coats in the trees, mixed in and among the attackers. We have heard that they would be taking the War in Europe to our shores, but until now, we had no indication. The northern settlements are all part of my parish, as it were. The Fort is on the Connecticut River, and the furthest northern outpost in New England. I was just stopping at the Fort, as I do once a month, for Sunday Services, weddings, funerals, and the like. I studied medicine as well as divinity at Harvard, so I am able to treat the body as well as the soul of my scattered flock. Well, Sir Edmond, to live on the northern frontier, one cannot be a stranger to the use of weapons and firearms. I was taught at least twice every month for the last two years in the use of tomahawk, pistol, sword, musket, and the bayonet. We have learned from sad experience, the savages make no distinction in the murder of men, women, and children. Free, indentured, or slave, all have been victims to the bloody knife. The red devils kept up their long range attack until just before dawn. Sniping at anyone who showed a head or hand above the walls. At first light they attacked. The half-naked savages, howling like the very fiends from Hell, rushed the walls. Captain Stevens had talked to us all night about waiting till the last moment to open fire. The boys were all trained in the militia, and knew in the hearts that the foe would show no mercy if they scaled the ramparts. Well there we all stood, waiting, holding our fire. Closer they came. “First rank, forward.”

As the sun sets over the Friday traffic on its homeward journey, the members of the Sir John Savile’s Household re-enactment group converge upon a hidden gem nestling in the North Yorkshire Dales - the magnificent remains of Bolton Castle. Bolton Castle was built by Sir Richard le Scrope, 1st Baron of Bolton and Lord Chancellor of England to Richard II. The building was already partly constructed in 1378 as a surviving contract for the Kitchen Tower (now collapsed), dated 14 September 1378, attests. A licence for the crenellation of the castle was granted by Richard II in 1379 and building was completed in 1399 with the dedication of its chapel. Richard le Scrope spent a reputed 18000 Marks on building Bolton Castle, which in the 16th century Sir Francis Knollys (an English courtier) commented had 'the highest walls of any house he had seen'. Its biggest historical ‘claim to fame’ is the enforced stay by Mary Queen of Scots. She arrived from Carlisle Castle on 16 July 1568 and was given Henry Scrope's own apartments in the South-West tower. Of her retinue of 51 knights, servants and ladies-in-waiting only 30 of her men and six ladies-in-waiting were able to stay in the castle, the rest taking lodgings nearby. She stayed at Bolton Castle until 26 January 1569, where she was taken to Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire to spend the next 18 years before her execution in 1587.
Bolton Castle is a quadrangular castle - four 3-storey ranges around a rectangular court-yard, with 4-storey corner towers and the entrance thorough a gatehouse in the east range. During the English Civil War the castle was garrisoned by Royalists besieged by Parliamentary troops in 1644. It fell to Major-General Poyntz on 5 November 1645 with John Scrope being allowed to leave for his Nottinghamshire property with four of his servants.
The following year Parliament ordered Bolton Cas-tle to be ‘rendered un-tenantable’ and it was slighted. In later years the castle was used as a quarry, the north-east tower eventually collapsing in 1761. Currently, the west and part of the south wings are still in use and run as a museum. It is currently owned and run by the descendants of the Scrope line - Tom and Katie OrdePowlett, and additionally boasts a maze, herb garden, wild flower meadow, rose garden, falconry, wild boar park and a vineyard. It is within this wonderful setting that the members of the Sir John Savile’s Household spent a weekend portraying the daily activities of a modest household in the 15th century.
The day started with a Mass held in the chapel on the second floor of the South side of the castle, in which the household were given a blessing from the priest. Following this the household went to their separate business, demonstrating their knowledge and skills to the visiting public.
The Master Gunner attended to the hand guns and cannon in the armouries, describing the evolution of gunpowder weapons in 15th century Europe, whilst the stone mason quietly carved gun-stones and the wood-carver crafted troughs for mixing dough. Even the glazier was present, displaying his stained glass, ready to explain how the colourful pieces were fixed together.
The ladies of the castle adjourned to the Solar to work on their various crafts, spinning flax and wool, finger weaving with fine silks, and sewing clothing. To entertain them a selection of medieval games were laid out, and the household took part in a display of dancing in the afternoon. The young men of the castle were called to archery practice in the main courtyard midmorning for a fire-power display with longbows and crossbows, and Esther the cannon shook the castle walls with her voice! This was followed by sword and buckler practice – which included some enthusiastic young women of the castle too who wished to learn how to protect themselves.
The cooks worked on the roaring fire in the guard mess kitchen (the Great Kitchen no longer existing), under the watchful eye of the Master Cook, to create the household foods from the 14th and 15th century, from vegetable pottage, frumenty, cheese and trenchers of bread, up to the fine fayre of fried fig pastries with cream, fruit rissoles, baked fish, and dates stuffed with marzipan. If nothing else, we were a well fed household over the week-end!
The afternoon saw the men-at-arms of the Household drill in the gardens of the castle with bills. The Captain talked the public through the armour and weaponry worn by retained menat-arms, and children were given the opportunity to join the Household militia by taking up arms and drilling with the men.
Too soon the weekend was over, and everything was packed up and floors swept. We are truly privileged to have been able to make the castle come to life for both ourselves and the castle visitors and look forward to many more visits to Bolton Castle in the future.

MURDER IN THE PALACE BY IAIN CAMPBELL
Prince Ra-em Hotep, son of Ramesses II, has been found dead in his room. Poison is suspected and Cretan pharmacist, Nikolas, is brought in to investigate the mysterious death. A ‘locked room’ puzzle is presented here: who could possibly have killed the prince? Nikolas finds his initial investigation thwarted by the funerary processes of Egypt and, building a group around him, finds himself travelling across Egypt to uncover the conspiracy of Ra-em Hotep’s death and unwittingly, discovering rebellion and corruption. Campbell’s writing style incorporates a very dry wit and there’s no doubt that Egypt springs to life on the page. The religious elements of Egyptian life are given scope but are also somewhat derided by Nikolas who believes his own Cretan upbringing and society to be superior and less superstitious. This leads to some very interesting discussions between Nikolas and his entourage, which makes for entertaining reading. The herbal medicines and cures created by Nikolas and his partner, are uncannily accurate and a lesson is given through entertainment in the history of medicine as well as the lives of all aspects of Egyptian society, from the lepers and miners, who are ostracised by those in towns and cities, to the high royals in the palaces. A good read and one for taking time over and relaxing with.
