Motivation for engagement in reenactment: how, why and for what purpose? ... a thing that is wealth and wisdom for a man, always sounds ridiculous for others... Hermann Hesse

Motivation for having a hobby depends on many factors, such as social, financial, cultural ones, etc. A desire to devote a part of spare time or even all effective working time to a kind of reenactment equally depends on individual aspirations of a person and conditions of his/her environment, which influences the movement much, after all. Why is the movement so different in the CIS, Europe, USA and Canada? Why is the average age of reenactors from different countries not the same? Why do people become engaged in reenactment? What are the goals they achieve via reenactment? How do their incomes determine their roles in the movement? All these questions require a good analysis, so let's try to do it and find the answers.

Why does the movement have certain peculiarities in different countries? It’s, of course, the broadest question. Many things affect the movement, starting from culture and history, and up to an average level of income, lifestyle, traditions and opportunities for going in for sports. After all, reenactment is a creative work to some extent. Europe and the CIS have totally different reenactment movements, because people pursue different goals. Russia and Ukraine pay more attention to the historical medieval battle, which is often the highlight of any event. Europe focuses more on the living history aspect, which dominates over all the others. Therefore, medieval historical battles are a sport in the CIS, while in Europe you often see just a reenactment of a battle, battles are not full contact. Only recently, Europe has begun to develop a full-contact HMB due to the influence of the CIS. Living standards are also different in Europe and the CIS, the middle class dominates in European countries, and it is the class representatives of which are potential followers of the reenactment movement (and exactly the living history - in Europe middle-aged people deal with it). As for the CIS, usually young people join the movement, when the incomes are not steady, so a decisive influence here belongs to the fact that the reenactment in the CIS is often associated with a kind of subculture, and the reason, again, is often merely a desire to be engaged in the HMB. And the result is a simple formula: Europe - the middle class, middle aged people, hobbies; the CIS – young people, middle aged people, sport, hobby. Of course, it is possible to debatable here, but the most striking representatives of the movement can be described using these characteristics.

Why is the average age of re-enactors from different countries not the same? We have already answered this question to some extent. The difference is due to the fact that the reenactment and the HMB are often the ways of self-realization in the CIS, while in Europe they are mostly hobbies for spare time. And it is due to this fact that the historical medieval battle is better developed in the CIS, people are ready to risk for self-realization, but not for a hobby. Although, the HMB becomes very popular in Europe when it is treated as a professional sport. So far it's just an activity for enthusiasts. By the way, the situation is exactly the opposite concerning the living history. In Europe, though being a hobby, it is substantially supported by public programs, and various social projects (for e.g. by EXARC, which supports the development of open-air museums, master classes on ancient crafts and conducting of living history events), while in the CIS it is a business for enthusiast only. If the "Slavic" attitude to the HMB will be supported by the state giving assistance for living history events organization, as well as promotion by sport and education committees, the reenactment has the potential to become a national idea. But it will never happen, because the support of projects of cultural and social kind in the CIS is very low in contrast to Europe and America. Why do people choose the reenactment? It depends much on the structure of income of every individual. In fact, engagement into reenactment, like any other hobby, is possible if a person has spare money and time he/she can spend on it, without any harm to their main occupation. This is the situation concerning Europe: the middle class is well-developed, people have extra money and time, and being bored by a measured lifestyle people want to try themselves at something special, something that would help to avoid the routine. The situation is slightly different in the CIS, despite the fact that the general level of incomes is less, people still have an opportunity to join the movement. The reenactment is more like a subculture there (and to belong to a unique and devoted group, people are ready to pay extra) and many want to become good at the HMB, so it turns representatives of the CIS come to the reenactment not to have an interesting pastime, and because of its uniqueness or sporting aspirations.

Although, if we consider those engaged in purely living history, the motivation of those social groups is much like the one in Europe and the CIS. Concerning money, the reenactment is not developed at all in countries with low living standards. For the rich it’s not interesting, because they have access to any entertainment (which means they will change them periodically, while the reenactment requires persistence and devotion), while the poor, who form the majority, simply have neither time nor money for it.

What goals do people achieve via the reenactment? The answer depends on whether people have some goals at all. Those who set certain goals, usually achieve them with time, they ether achieve great results in the HMB, or begin to organize their own events, or find other ways to make the reenactment something bigger than just a hobby. All the others, i.e. those who have no goals, take the reenactment more as an interesting pastime, entertainment. Achieving goals requires a lot of effort, probably changes in the way of life, much money and time. And mature people aren’t usually ready for such sacrifice for the sake of a hobby. The situation is different with young people, but it is more likely due to the fact they try to understand their mission, so at certain stages students are ready to participate in any kind of activity, especially if they offer socializing, traveling, subcultures and similar things. How do incomes of people affect their roles in the movement? The answer to this question is directly related to the previous one. For those for whom it is just a hobby, the influence is directly proportional. The more is the income, the greater are the opportunities for buying new expensive accessories. Although, it is true only to a certain moment. With a substantial increase in income levels, a person is likely to choose a more expensive and interesting activity. Why does it happen? If a person takes the reenactment as a pastime for a weekend, it means it was chosen due to the income level. A certain factor played its role at some point of time (visit to a festival, watched TV broadcast, publications on the Internet) and a person started to practice it because it was interesting. While his/her standard of living, income and amount of free time will remain at an approximately the same level, nothing will change. But

as soon as the income increases substantially, a person is more likely to find more expensive hobby. A new social class, a new group of people with whom this person communicates, and as a result, a new hobby that is good for a particular group. Let’s assume, it is much more fashionable to sail a yacht than to live in a tent at a festival. For those for whom the reenactment is a way of life, the dependence is other. Here, the level of a person depends more on time he/she has devoted to the movement, rather than the level of income. Of course, good income will promote quicker development, but even with an average income a person will be able to find enough time and money to develop and achieve goals. This is the difference, a person can risk for certain goals, but not for a hobby. And despite the fact the movement develops due to the people who set goals for themselves, the majority take the reenactment as a pastime. The rule of auto synchronization can be applied here (the "Rule of 5%): leaders (5%) determine a way, showing by own example how and what to do, and the rest (95%) begin to repeat and stick to the given level. The both groups are needed for the effective development of the movement. Priorities of people may be different... Competition One The Danubian frontier is weaker than ever, and a storm is gathering in the north . . . Deep winter, 376 AD: Emperor Valens has withdrawn the field armies from Moesia and Thracia to fight in the Persian War. The impoverished limitanei legions left behind to defend the banks of the River Danubius are now all that stand between the war-hungry Goths and heart of the Eastern Roman Empire. For Numerius Vitellius Pavo and the men of the XI Claudia, the brief from Emperor Valens is simple: to avoid war with the Goths at all costs while the Roman defences are so weak. But in the frozen lands north of the Danubius a dark legend, thought long dead, has risen again. The name is on the lips of every warrior in Gutthiuda; the one who will unite the tribes, the one whose armies will march upon the empire, the one who will bathe in Roman blood . . .

OUCH! A history of arrow wound treatment by Kevin Goodman What a find! For those of us interested in all things that encompass both history and archery, one of the questions we have probably asked ourselves at some point is, what must it have been like to be hit by an arrow? School boys brought up on the stories of Harold, Prince Henry and cowboys and Indians have all asked the same question. What damage would it do to our flesh, organs and bones? How would such wounds have been treated before modern medicines and what would be the likelihood of recovery, let alone survival? Kevin's research into the subject answers every aspect of this question. He draws together much of the lost or forgotten treatises by the leading physicians and surgeons who have ever documented their views on arrow wounds throughout history. Writings from the ancient world, the Far and Middle East and India are followed by the Roman, Saxon and Medieval periods in Europe and the new world. Neatly, Kevin refrains from offering his own speculation or interpretation on the subject but leaves the extracts to speak for themselves. The writings throughout gives a complete picture of wounds, symptoms and treatments from wherever man has used the bow as a weapon against his fellow man. This is not a book for the squeamish as gory details abound throughout, but it is unquestionably totally absorbing from start to finish. A minor niggle for me is that the title and cover lack the gravitas for such a well-researched volume. However and that said, for every archer and re-enactor this should definitely stand proudly amongst the serious books on our shelves Is there another volume that offers a more complete attempt at pulling together all the references to arrow wounds and their treatments for the modern reader? I doubt it! Well done Kevin. Kind Regards Marc Grady The Longbow Emporium

Competition two 1054, pious King Edward sits on the throne, spending his days hunting, sleeping and praying, leaving the security of his kingdom to his more capable brother-in-law Harold Godwinson, the powerful Earl of Wessex. Against this backdrop we meet Wulfhere, a Sussex thegn who, as the sun sets over the wild forest of Andredesweald, is returning home victoriously from a great battle in the north. Holding his lands directly from the King, his position demands loyalty to Edward himself, but Wulfhere is dutybound to also serve Harold, a bond forged within Wulfhere’s family heritage and borne of the ancient Teutonic ideology of honour and loyalty.

Wulfhere is a man with the strength and courage of a bear, a warrior whose loyalty to his lord and king is unquestionable. He is also a man who holds his family dear and would do anything to protect them. So when Harold demands that he wed his daughter to the son of Helghi, his sworn enemy, Wulfhere has to find a way to save his daughter from a life of certain misery in the household of the cruel and resentful Helghi, without comprising his honour and loyalty to his lord, Harold. On the battlefield, Wulfhere fights for his life but elsewhere the enemy is closer to home, sinister and shadowy and far more dangerous than any war.

In the spring of 1941, before Pearl Harbor, before American committed itself to involvement in World War II, a cadre of Ivy League-educated young men joined the fight without the backing of their country, by enlisting with the British Army in Canada. The personal stories of five of these men are at the core of Cox’s work. Letters, diaries, interviews, and photographs recreate the heady days of volunteering, bidding loved ones farewell, training in England, as well as the claustrophobic, months-long journey around the Horn of Africa, to the dusty, chaotic scrambling and fighting in North Africa. The battle of El Alamein is the first, and for some, only test for these young soldiers, and Cox’s documentation provides their unique perspective, which is missing from many accounts of the time. Culture shock, boredom, injury, recovery, and death are unflinchingly addressed, as the young men’s paths repeatedly cross. The story doesn’t end with the fighting; Cox, a niece of one of the soldiers, follows the paths of the families—both those who welcomed home survivors, and those who were left with only a telegram and a few personal effects. This is at times a painful, but completely riveting, read.
