WHAT IS SMART CITY?! Nowadays, everyone everywhere is talking about 'SMART CITY'. But what exactly is a smart city? Is it the one that has all the new technologies? Is it the one that has all modern amenities? Or the one with a metro? The main question that arises today is whether the availability of modern facilities is important or the EFFICIENCY of those facilities? Smart city is a developed urban area that creates sustainable, economic development and high quality of life by excelling in economy, mobility, environment, people, living and government. It should consider the future needs and developments of the city and its citizens, focus on strengthening innovation and bringing in investments and effectively involve public in some decisions by various means like e-participation.

CASE STUDY ANALYSIS The street signage is present but is not visible to the drivers thus causing a lot of problems. Sinhagad road is one of the most important and busy road in the city and hence has more frequency of public buses. But these buses are most of the mes struck in traffic, making the public transport system unreliable. SECTION A-A

Sinhagad road is one of the well-designed roads in pune, but s ll does not func on in the expected way. The road is 3 lane but the last lane of the road is not used as a carriage way and is instead used for parking or occupied by the vendors . Street lights are provided but are not at regular intervals, hence there are a lot of dark and shady spaces at night.

SECTION B-B

Toilets are provided on the road but are not maintained. Possible reason for this could be the loca on of these toilets that render them useless for the public. The major traffic nodes are the points of dense traffic jams. Thus affec ng the smooth func oning of the en re road. SECTION C-C

PLAN

LANE FOR PRIVATE VEHICLES

LANE FOR BUS STOPS AND PARKING

LANE FOR BUS AND AUTO RICKSHAW

STRAIGHT ROAD: Separate bus and rickshaw lane to promote speedy and reliable public transport system. Separate bicycle lane to avoid any accidents with Motorized vehicles. Separate 3.5m pedestrian pathway to promote walkability and avoid road accidents. A buffer zone provided for various ac vi es like bus stops, parking, vendors, etc.

LANE FOR CYCLE TRACK

JUCTION: A collec on of design elements makes le turns simple and secure, right turns protected and fast and provides straight through movements that minimize or eliminate conflicts from turning cars. With this the riders will never feel stranded, exposed or unsure of where to go and how to get there.

LANE FOR PEDESTRIANS

Protected bike lanes use curb planters or parking to buffer bicyclists from moving cars. The INTERSECTIONS are designed in such a ways that the vehicular, public transport, bicycle and pedestrian movement are be er taken care of.

LANE FOR PEDESTRIANS

Reloca ng the SIGNAGE BOARDS IN THE BUFFER ZONE, so that they can be seen from both, the carriage way as well as public transport lane.
