Scrap Tire Funds Scrap Tires are an issue for every county in the region and the state. In the last few years the Solid Waste Grants Program has been working with State Rubber and Environmental Solutions in Denver City, Texas to recycle scrap tires.

OH! Christmas Chips! How many Christmas trees are sold in the US every year? 33 million! That’s a lot of mulch! Did you know pine mulch is preferred for hiking/walking trails? It is not the best mulch for vegetable gardens because of its acidic make-up. It is; however, great for tree and shrub mulch. Spread mulch 2-3 inches deep and several feet out from tree trucks for best results.

Program Grants have provided funds to purchase collection/storage trailers for communities. Tires are collected from residents and stored inside a weatherproof trailer until 1500+ build-up. At that point, the Public Works Staff contact Elizabeth Thomas at the PRPC to request an exchange with the recycler.

Recently, The High Plains Resource Conservation and Development Office received funds to assist communities in certain counties with costs associated with scrap tire clean-up; including the purchase of collection/storage trailers and the exchange fees, which allow communities to hold amnesty events.

E-Success! On Texas Recycles Day (November 15th) The PEP began a month-long eWaste Collection/Recycling Event. As of today, it is exciting to report we are shipping 115 pallets of ewaste to the ECS Refining in Terrell, Texas.

Early estimates would put each pallet at 1,500 pounds each! That is 172,500 pounds of e-waste diverted from our regional landfills! Way To Go Everyone! 115 Pallets!

CTRA Monthly Price Sheet

Attached is the CTRA Price Sheet for December, 2010. Merry Christmas to us! All but one of the prices either stayed the same or saw an increase in December! Paper remained steady for the month with Newspaper #8 seeing an increase, but SOW seeing a 4% decrease. All the plastics saw increase and PET had the largest plastic increase at almost 21%. Steel is up to $188/ton so it would be a great time to clean-out and cash-in! Call me if you need anything or to request a pick-up.
