This year marks Paul Meakin’s 50th successful year in estate agency “circa 5th March 1969 to present day” covering all districts of Croydon and is now perhaps the longest serving estate agent. Paul has experienced many ups and downs in the Croydon property market, and prides himself on honesty, trust and going the extra mile to provide customer service.

In 1955, Paul, aged 4, moved to Croham Valley Road, Ballards Farm and attended two local schools, Gilbert Scott and Shirley High (leaving as Head boy). As a teenager Paul made his first life changing decision and chose estate agency over a career as a semi professional footballer with Crystal Palace. His first estate agent position was in Selsdon, where he quickly learnt the art of negotiating and sales skills. With a taste for success within the property industry his passion quickly became an obsession buying his first investment property aged 19.

In 1973, with £5,000 financial backing and a very modest business plan, Paul opened Paul Meakin and Partners in Coulsdon, with hard work, determination and commitment, he overcame all challenges the first being the 3 day week, he witnessed first hand the difficulties caused from the high interest rates and even sold a house without a commission charge so his clients could complete their move. That one good will gesture was repaid over and over with recommendation and built the reputation of a local business with a heart.

Outside of estate agency, Paul has raised a family including his daughter, Emma, who is a Director of the company and has always admired him for both his professional and personal qualities.

As well as being a great family man, Paul has contributed a lot to charity, he has run the London, New York, Chicago and Paris Marathons for Get Kids Going and young children with Epilepsy, raising thousands over the years for charities close to his heart. His involvement in charity is testament to his compassion and his desire to help others. I I I CELEBRATING 50

Harmes Turner Brown have been supporting the wonderful charity, Phabkids since 2010. Directors Peter Brown and Steve Turner ran the London marathon for Phab in April 2010 and since then HTB have raised thousands of pounds for this worthwhile cause. It’s not just Peter and Steve that have worked hard to raise funds, but all of the staff at HTB have contributed over the years through raffles, cakes sales, online competitions, colouring competitions, auctions and much more. More recently, Steve has taken part in RideLondon for Phab. In fact he has completed the course four times, raising even more for the charity. The charity has over 150 Phab clubs across England and Wales, with 8,000 members, enabling children, young people and adults with disabilities to get together with friends and family to enjoy all kinds of activities and social events. The Directors of HTB visited one of the local Phab clubs back in 2010 and immediately fell in love with the charity after seeing the effort the staff and volunteers put in. Phab inspires and supports children, young people and adults with and without disabilities to make more of life together - breaking down community barriers, reducing social isolation and creating opportunities for disabled people to enjoy the same activities and challenges as, and alongside, those without a disability.

Local Phab Clubs

Some clubs will meet each week, with members enjoying each other’s company and different activities - from crafts to a game of pool, disco or visit from the local Fire Station! Other clubs will focus on sports such as Boccia, trips to the cinema or days out. Run by local volunteers, Phab Clubs can make a real difference to the lives of people with disabilities and their families too. Regional and national events, organised by Phab, bring local clubs and members together to share experiences, support each other and enjoy time away together.

Fully accessible Holiday Projects

Phab’s very special ‘Inclusive Living Experience Residential Projects’ enable children and young people aged from 8 to 25 to experience a whole range of challenging and exciting activities at fully accessible outdoor activity centres. Approximately 115 children and young people each year spend a weekend or week away with Phab at Bendrigg Lodge in the Lake District or Avon Tyrrell in the New Forest, fully supported by around 95 Phab volunteers and carers and the Centres’ own experienced staff. Phab volunteers receive tailored training to enable them to support the children and, where needed, a special carer can accompany a child. Steve Turner and his son Luke, were lucky enough to spend a day at Avon Tyrell to see the charity in action. Both Steve and Luke spent an emotional day watching the children enjoy various activities from archery to sailing and high ropes/ climbing in the forest. HTB continue to support Phab and Steve now volunteers personally at the London Marathon Expo, meeting and registering all the ‘Phab’ runners and sharing his own experiences with them.

Estate agents find themselves under increasing pressure to generate new ideas to grow their brand awareness and give themselves a competitive edge.
