A Message from the Basileus

Fall is in the air Sorors! As we usher in the month of October, I would like to begin by giving Kudos and Klaps to the Leadership Development Committee for working hand in hand with Madam Anti-Basileus and me to execute a splendid Leadership Retreat. Soror Kristi Stepp and Soror Terry Mann were stellar Special s/o to the Sisterly Relations Committee, Soror Amber White, and Soror Kaitlin McQueen for adding their special touches! I want to extend a personal recognition to our corporate sponsors: Andiamo Presents and New Day Entertainment for donating over $1200 to make our retreat that much more memorable!

Special AKAlades go out to our Enhance Our ENVIRONMENT Committee led by Soror Heather Lloyd, Uplift Our LOCAL COMMUNITY Committee led by Soror Tomara Nolen, and Membership Committee led by Soror Carla Postell. These Committees kicked off the second half of our year with the Adopt a Highway Cleanup, Tara’s Walk, and Homecoming Reclamation - where 2 Pearls were reclaimed! What a great way to gear up for Q4, by soaring in SERVICE!

As we Soar into October, get ready to cast your votes on the proposed Bylaw changes at our Chapter meeting. We will also hear from our Nominating Committee led by Soror Tuanda Ward-Holmes regarding candidates eligible to run for office As a sisterly reminder, due to voting both our October and November Chapter meetings will be closed to visiting Sorors.

With 3 months left in 2023, let’s continue to roll up our pink and green sleeves and show just how OUTSTANDING we are!

Blessings, Soror Keia

Sisterhood is a bond that goes beyond being family .It connects women to each other, and in its most beautiful manifestations, allows each woman to thrive in ways she could never do on her own. Sisterhood provides a safe space for your truest self to emerge.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

As women, we need sisters who will intentionally help us to grow and develop into our best self. We need mature, godly women to surround and support us in our different seasons of life. Having sisters around is like having a place where your tears are caught not judged, where you are held not ridiculed, and where it’s okay to not be okay.

Sisterhood is also a place to show up, share and heal especially when it feels like your entire world is crumbling around you because, at its core, sisterhood is where YOU are caught, held, and nurtured and where you get to do the same for another woman.

We often tell ourselves that we don’t need people, especially other women, but we all crave connection. Not surface level connection but deep heart and soul centered connection if for no other reason but to know that we are neither alone nor are we the “only one”. We need each other!

Sisterhood has the benefit of producing strength. In unity, there is strength. There is help in sisterhood for women who may fall… Sisterhood gives strength because a sister can offer so much help. Get you some godly sisters…they are needed!

STANDARDS

We Have Standards for Excellence

Since 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® has established itself as an organization of excellence for 115 years. There aren’t many businesses nor organizations that have survived and thrived for over a century and still exist today. Having well established standards ensures that an organization improves, maintains and consistently delivers services to its members, customers and stakeholders.

Standardization is the process of creating and implementing a set of guidelines, rules or procedures that are followed by an organization to ensure consistency and quality in its products, services or processes. Businesses and organizations that fail to adhere to and build upon its standards, risk damage to their reputation and can lose the identity of their brand.

Well established standards removes ambiguity, improves quality, boosts productivity, eliminates guesswork and optimizes pre-defined processes.

The International Standards Committee has the responsibility of making sure that every chapter of AKA is operating in excellence through the chapter evaluation process. Chapter evaluations assist chapters in improving operations, program implementation and compliance as described by Alpha Kappa Alpha Constitution and Bylaws and Manual of Standard Procedure.

ADVOCATE FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE

EVERY VOTE MATTERS and EVERY ELECTION MATTERS

Submitted by the Advocate for Social Justice Committee

Do You Know What Is Going on Around You?

Did you know that there are at least 21 different public school districts in Macomb County, MI?Whether you have a child in K-12 or not, do you know who serves on the School Board, who is running for the School Board, and the things their voices and votes will influence within the school districts?

Did you know that on August 8, 2023, Macomb County, MI held elections for two city mayors, one city clerk, and six city council seats along with three bond proposals?

Do you know that on November 7, 2023, six cities in Macomb County will elect Mayors, two cities will elect Library Board members and nine cities will elect Council members?

If you didn’t know or don’t know, YOU NEED TO KNOW because EVERY VOTE MATTERS, and EVERY ELECTION MATTERS. As a part of the OXO Strategic Plan, we considered the impact of the political and legal environment of Macomb County, MI because it has the ability to influence what we legally can and cannot do within and on behalf of our community. It also can lead us to unexplored opportunities for greater advocacy and service within our local communities. We must remain vigilant and ready to alert, advocate, and act for the cause of social justice throughout Macomb County. At the end of the day, this means that even if you don’t live in the city going through an election cycle, what happens anywhere in Macomb County has the ability to impact our efforts to provide service for all mankind everywhere in Macomb County.

Have You Verified that You are Ready to Make Your Vote Count?

As we respond to the Supreme Basileus’ national voter engagement campaign please make sure that you are registered to vote where you think you are registered to vote (https://whenweallvote.org/). Please also assist your friends and family with ensuring that they are ready to participate in any and all upcoming elections (as appropriate).
