or decades, families in the central Virginia area have been gathering at Fort Lee for the annual “Fourth at the Fort” celebration. This year, celebrate Independence Day with Maddie & Tae, breakout music industry recording artists and the featured performers for the celebration at Williams Stadium in Fort Lee, Va. Maddie & Tae is an American female country music duo composed of Madison Marlow and Taylor Dye, both of whom are singers, songwriters, and guitarists. Country music fans may be familiar with these young ladies from Texas and Oklahoma, respectively. Their debut album “Start Here” includes the track “Girl in a Country Song,” which achieved the top spot on the Billboard country singles chart 23 weeks after its release in 2016. The accompanying video on YouTube attracted 38 million viewers and was named the Country Music Association’s video of the year. The duo’s singing career also has been catapulted by appearances on the “Late Show with David Letterman,” the “Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” “TODAY,” and “Live with Kelly and Michael.” Also, Maddie & Tae were guests on the daytime show, “The Talk” where they performed a cleverly written song about dealing with bullies called “Sierra.” In addition to their musical talents, Maddie & Tae have launched a line of clothing, featured at Bloomingdale’s, described as an eclectic mix of textures, colors and silhouettes that embodies their adventurous girl power spirit. There will be a food court where guests can purchase barbecue, pizza, burgers, hotdogs, funnel cakes, ice cream, drinks and adult beverages. Wear your patriotic clothing of red, white and blue and celebrate at Fort Lee. Entertainment begins at 5 p.m. with Maddie & Tae starting at 8 p.m. For best seating, early arrival is recommended. William ‘Bubba’ Bulifant Local Bombardier Loves Painting the Night Sky Petersburg native Bubba Bulifant has been painting the sky at night throughout Virginia for 33 years. He is the owner of Dominion Fireworks, a local business offering firework displays all over the state. Employing five full-time workers and 78-part time workers, Dominion Fireworks stays very busy, offering over 150 major displays each year. All employees are state certified and have completed extensive training, including a written exam. All that training has paid off, Dominion Fireworks has had zero injuries since opening in 1984. Bulifant explains that much planning goes into his firework displays. For example, for a recent wedding celebration he began the show with an assortment of white blasts followed by two red hearts, merging into one very large red heart, followed by more white blasts then ending with a showy display of multi colored rockets. Custom displays are common, working many college football games and celebrations where school colors are key. Bubba Bulifant has been traveling east to west and north to south with his creative presentations. In the summer, he spends lots of time in the Tidewater area with shows at sporting events, festivals and two shows weekly at Virginia Beach. He even rents a tugboat and a barge for five months out of the year so he can properly paint the sky over the Atlantic Ocean. Bombardier Bulifant will be busy this year on the 4th of July. He and his crew have 30 major displays throughout the state, painting the skies of Virginia.

Brooke Henderson, Canada’s young star on the LPGA tour Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois will be the location of this year’s Women’s PGA Championship, which wraps up Sunday, July 2 on NBC. Defending champion Brooke Henderson, who at age 18 became the youngest player to ever win the Women’s PGA Championship, and the second youngest to win any major, would love to stage a repeat performance of 2016. In that event she held off top-ranked Lydia Ko in a playoff at Sahalee Country Club near Seattle to win her first Major. The playoff between Henderson and Ko also meant the end of Indee Park’s winning streak. Park had won three straight Women’s PGA Championship titles from 2013 to 2015. Henderson is yet another bright young star on the LPGA tour, which continues to grow in popularity, including in

her home country of Canada. With her Women’s PGA Championship title last year she became the first Canadian to win a Major in 48 years. In 2015 the Canadian Press named her Female Athlete of the Year. As an amateur, she was the top-ranked women’s golfer before deciding to turn pro at the end of 2014. As of this writing she has eight professional wins, including three on the LPGA Tour. She took some time out last summer (2016) to represent Canada at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where she finished seventh in the Women’s Golf Tournament right after winning the Cambia Portland Classic in July. ‘Wonder Woman’ is a relative wonder in her own movie

After the sometimes overblown brawn of the recent movies built around DC Comics characters, step aside, guys: It’s now a woman’s work. And, more specifically, “Wonder Woman.” If you know those comics and/or the name Lynda Carter, you’re already versed in the background of the Amazonian with the golden lasso. That gives the film much to go up against, since it has to approach the story of the character’s roots with a fresh eye. For that, much credit goes to director Patty Jenkins and title star Gal Gadot, who first appeared in the role in last year’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” You might not think the filmmaker who guided Charlize Theron to an Oscar for “Monster” would be comfortable in

superheroine territory, but in many ways, she’s just the unexpected choice this saga needs. And as the true wonder of a woman also known to the outside world as Diana Prince, Gadot scores by being both strong and vulnerable when each trait is needed. And both are required by dashing World War I pilot Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine, who introduces our heroine to society beyond the island where she’s raised by her peaceable mother (Connie Nielsen) and warrior aunt (Robin Wright, smartly redeploying her “House of Cards” image in a different way). Bringing that female legend into the real world – at least the one envisioned by the movie – is where “Wonder Woman” is particularly successful. Sunday, July 2, 2017 | TICKET 17

John Stamos leads America’s birthday party on ‘A Capitol Fourth’ In his first stint as host of “A Capitol Fourth,” John Stamos is guaranteed to have a big presence for an extra reason. Not only will the “Full House,” “Grandfathered” and “Scream Queens” alum introduce other acts, he’ll also continue a frequent role of his – performing with music’s iconic Beach Boys – as PBS broadcasts the 37th annual edition of the Independence Day celebration Tuesday, July 4 (check local listings), from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. “I’ve hosted quite a few things,” Stamos says, “but to me, this is the time to host a Fourth of July special about America and our freedom. Not to get political, but it’s going to feel great to talk about what that means to us right now, with the way of the world. I think it might have a little more meaning this year. To me, it will.” Also slated to appear on “A Capitol Fourth” are Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi as “The Blues Brothers,” country music’s Trace Adkins, Motown’s legendary Four Tops, Broadway star Phillipa Soo (“Hamilton,” “Amelie”), latest “The Voice” winner Chris Blue and – starting the 90-minute program with the National Anthem – Sofia Carson of the upcoming Disney/ABC TV-movie sequel “Descendants 2.” Jack Everly again will conduct the National Symphony Orchestra. Just coming off a European tour with the Beach Boys, Stamos isn’t their only addition for “A Capitol Fourth,” since Mark McGrath also will be with them. “I’d sat in with them here and there,” Stamos recalls, “but the first time I really was featured with the band was in 1985, at the Fourth of July concert at the Washington Monument. We were in Philadelphia that day, and there was a million-and-a-half

people there, then we went to D.C. that night and there was another million. That was pretty crazy.” With the special having its traditional culmination in the 1812 Overture, cannon fire will accompany that Tchaikovsky classic ... and the program information stresses that will be “live,” possibly addressing last year’s situation, when some viewers noted fireworks from an earlier “A Capitol Fourth” telecast had been edited in, a move prompted by inclement weather in Washington that night. The Beach Boys also played last year’s National Memorial Day Concert for the same producers – who then included the founder of both events, the late Jerry Colbert – and Stamos (who will be back in Season 3 of Netflix’s “Fuller House”) reasons, “We need that type of music, and the sort of feeling that it evokes, now more than ever. Going West: Remembering television’s first Batman

Q: I’ve heard that Vanessa Bayer isn’t returning to “Saturday Night Live” next season. Is that true? Who else is leaving? – Jeff Grant, Boynton Beach, Fla.

Q: I’m saddened by the death of Adam West. Did he do other television series besides “Batman”? – Nancy Martin, via e-mail A: The actor did guest shots on such other classic series as “Bonanza,” “The Rifleman,” “Maverick” and “77 Sunset Strip” before he landed his first steady role as one of “The Detectives” serving under Robert Taylor in the early 1960s. More guest roles followed on shows including “Gunsmoke,” “Perry Mason” and “Bewitched” ... and then came the dual roles of millionaire Bruce Wayne and Gotham City’s Caped Crusader in the mid1960s, cementing West’s television fame forever. He would voice the role of Batman in several animated series later, and he would appear regularly in the shows “The Last Precinct,” “Danger Theater” and “Black Scorpion.” He often did voice work on other cartoons, including “Family Guy” (on which he was “Mayor Adam West”), and in recent years, he portrayed himself in episodes of such series as “The Big Bang Theory” and “30 Rock.”

Ginger Zee may be a weather reporter by trade, but she’s been enjoying a lot of career variety lately. Following her third-place finish in Season 22 of “Dancing With the Stars,” ABC News’ chief meteorologist – a staple of the weekday “Good Morning America” – has taken both edible matters and the environment to heart with her “Food Forecast” series on ABC.com, and she also has engaged in home renovation with husband Ben Aaron on DIY Network’s “Ben & Ginger: Renovation Realities.” She embraces such chances to show different sides of herself to the public. “If I’m on ‘GMA’ and you see me for 30 seconds or a minute or whatever it is, I’m really focused and I’m doing what I love,” Zee says. “I’m putting together the puzzle that is the atmosphere, and that’s all you get. “The reason people like to watch us, I think, is because they do feel like we are part of their family ... part of their breakfast table.
