WINTER SEASON

E A S T L E I G H

M OV I N G YO U

WELCOME It gives me great pleasure to introduce our wonderful 2017 Winter Season, packed with the best dance, theatre, comedy and an unforgettable Christmas package. We are thrilled to announce that we are to remain an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation for the next four years, enabling us to continue bringing our audiences performances that entertain, astonish and provoke thought, but most of all - move us. Whether that’s with Protein’s new remount of their sell-out hit Border Tales, or the poignant beauty of Finding Joy by Vamos Theatre who touched audiences in ‘Spring’ with The Best Thing. October is full of dance treats with family favourite Avant Garde’s Fagins’ Twist, The Owl and the Pussy Cat ballet from Let’s All Dance and an exclusive insight into Stopgap’s new work Incantatio with the London Contemporary Orchestra. We’re making the most of our atmospheric foyer and will welcome back our fantastic former associates Milk Presents with their tour de

force JOAN – a one-woman show that will take your breath away. We’re also thrilled to be taking you on a magical Christmas journey with three inspiring and uplifting shows that will be sure to get you in the mood for the festive season – Sleeping Beauty and The Gingerbread Man from our brilliant Youth Theatre, and the very special Where is Christmas? for the little ones from Commotion Dance. Our commitment to developing the next generation of talent and nurturing new artists is going from strength to strength as we will be supporting new work from Stopgap Dance, Stuff & Nonsense and James Finnemore as well as commissioning Acrojou, Protein Dance and our very own Associate Theatre Re. Come and have a look at work in creation at our Friday Open Space events. We look forward to moving you!

FINDING JOY

A CO-PRODUCTION FROM VAMOS THEATRE, THE HEREFORD COURTYARD AND JABADAOE

Joy is 83 today: she’s funny, loves to dance, and is losing her memory. Her grandson Danny is rebellious, bright and always getting into trouble. When Danny decides to look after Joy, they discover a shared playfulness and a mutual affection. But is that enough to take on the challenges ahead? Vamos Theatre’s wordless production tells the true story of a teenager’s decision to care for his grandmother with dementia, with humour, poignancy, and warmth. Praised by everyone from The Guardian to Dementia Positive, Vamos’s critically acclaimed and award winning production, Finding Joy witnessed phenomenal success at last year’s Edinburgh Festival and has enjoyed two international sell-out tours. This life-affirming story of lost memories and discovered love is a must-see and has secured Vamos as the UK’s leading full mask theatre company. You’ll Laugh, You’ll Cry, You’ll Find Joy!

“Vamos Theatre’s craftily constructed and crowd-pleasing piece... The show brilliantly conveys a sense of how frightening the world seems through Joy’s eyes ... the company of four are always fleet and the storytelling is excellent” - LYN GARDNER | THE GUARDIAN

EDUCATION EDUCATION EDUCATION

It’s May 1997. Tony Blair has won the election and Katrina and the Waves have won Eurovision. Channel 5 is a month old. No one knows who Harry Potter is. Britain is the coolest place in the world.

12+

This is The Wardrobe Ensemble’s love letter to their halcyon 90s schooldays - to smiley potato faces, to the tv being wheeled in on a Friday afternoon, to yoyos, to CGP, to setting fire to the bin, to pogs and furbies. A tribute to our teachers who were probably just as confused as we were. Education, Education, Education asks big questions about a country in special

measures, exploring what we are taught and why, and where responsibility lies. The show is devised by The Wardrobe Ensemble, who won huge critical acclaim with their 2015 production of 1972: The Future Of Sex at the Edinburgh Fringe. TICKETS
