AUTUMN / WINTER

SEASON 2018

WELCOME

We’re thrilled to share our Autumn/ Winter season with you! Packed with the best dance, theatre, comedy and exciting circus, as well as lots for the family and a complete Christmas extravaganza! We strive to bring our audiences performances that entertain, startle and provoke thought but most of all - move us. Whether that’s with the moving and poignant Stroke Odysseys from Ben Duke or the heart-stopping full-on physicality of the sensational Barely Methodical Troupe with their new work SHIFT. We kick off with the fantastic week-long Eastleigh Film Festival where we have searched high and low to find quirky locations to screen fabulous films from laundrettes, to social clubs, hairdressers to sewing shops, roof tops and country parks! We’re also shouting out to all the women out there with our Strong

Women in Film strand. This year we are pleased to be working in partnership with the Royal Victoria Country Park in marking the centenary of the end of WW1 by screening Journey’s End in the wonderful and newly refurbished Netley Chapel - not to be missed. We’re embracing the Christmas spirit this year with a full run of Tutti Frutti’s Snow Queen for all the family and our wonderful Youth Theatre’s production of The Nutcracker and The Mouse King. And if that’s not enough and you want to party, we’re holding our first special Christmas masquerade ball, Beer Fest, Christmas Lunches and theatre tours. Book now to join in the fun!

EVE DAWSON

Eve Dawson is an MA postgraduate of Winchester School of Art and a selfemployed visual artist at The Sorting Office, Eastleigh. Eve questions the concept of ‘instinctive art’. Every spatter of paint, or mark on the canvas, is in her opinion a conscious decision. Her work is a perfect balance between the serendipitous and the planned. Her creative language is colour, using a series of idiosyncratic marks and gestures. This then creates a conversation between visual texture, colour, form and depth. THE SNOW QUEEN

CHRISTMAS FAMILY SHOW

BY MIKE KENNY

3+

Join our winter journey about growing up, loyalty, friendship and the dangers of the unknown.

Kai and Gerda had been friends for as long as they could remember, Day followed day, Always the same, Until In a whirl of magic and deception, splinters of a magical broken mirror blow in the wind, freezing hearts and changing everything! As Kai is pulled under the spell of the powerful snow queen of ice and coldness, we follow Gerda’s quest to save her friend and return life to normal. Can it ever be the same again?

Mike Kenny has taken Hans Christian Andersen’s most highly acclaimed story and simplified it into a tale for the young. Ivan Stott returns to tutti frutti (Underneath a Magical Moon) to create memorable music and songs accompanied by a typically beautiful tutti frutti design. “Those looking for a magical and thought-provoking early experience of the wonder and power of theatre should treat themselves to tutti frutti” BRITISH THEATRE GUIDE

CONTAGION

AT THE GREAT HALL, WINCHESTER

Contagion is co-commissioned by 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary.

Contagion commemorates the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, which killed more people than the First World War itself. The piece is inspired by the nature and spread of the flu virus, the unseen enemy that mankind was battling within, while engaging in more conventional warfare in the world outside. The striking work of the Austrian artist Egon Schiele, who fell victim to the Spanish flu, forms a visual footnote to the piece.

Set to an atmospheric soundscape, this dance installation with digital visuals echoes the scientific features of a virus - rapid, random and constantly shapeshifting. Eight female dancers contort and mutate as they explore both the resilience and the vulnerability of the human body. Please note there is no audience seating. www.shobanajeyasingh.co.uk

TROILUS & CRESSIDA

Down on his luck in the suburbs, John Falstaff plans to hustle his way to a comfortable retirement by seducing the wives of two wealthy men. Unknown to him, it’s the women of Windsor who really pull the strings.

A thrilling and evocative love story set in London during the Second World War. The internationally acclaimed choreographer’s interpretation of the classic fairy tale has, at its heart, a true war-time romance.

Troilus and Cressida swear they will always be true to one another. But in the seventh year of the siege of Troy their innocence is tested, and exposed to the savage corrupting influence of war, with tragic consequences.
