Telling the best stories

Summer 2019

Welcome The laughs don’t stop there either, as we commemorate the 40th anniversary of the passing of Joyce Grenfell with a fitting tribute to the comedy legend, then usher in some new comedy faces as Mark Simmons and Matt Rees give you a sneak peek at their material before they take the Edinburgh Fringe by storm.

Welcome to a sizzling summer of fun at The Berry Theatre! This summer, we’re delighted to be presenting a whole host of ways that young people with a passion for theatre can jump in and get involved. Our Beyond the Stage Summer School will open up the entire theatre for a week in August, giving 11-16 year olds a chance to experience everything that goes into creating a performance for the stage. From scriptwriting and costume making to sound and lighting design, getting a real taste of how professional theatre works. Before that, there’s a chance to discover the joy and freedom of improvisation in our nauticalthemed day of games and workshops during the May half-term. Then, the UK’s leading provider of spontaneous laughs, comedy sensations The Noise Next Door take to the stage with a swashbuckling show that all the family will enjoy. We also welcome back our favourite improvisers this season, as the Showstoppers return to create another hilarious musical entirely based on suggestions from the audience. We really don’t know how they do it!

Our evenings with master raconteur Gyles Brandreth and best-selling author Gill Sims have already totally sold out, so we’d recommend booking early if you’d like to join us for any of our summer events. We look forward to seeing you there!

All My Sons

Small Island

by Arthur Miller, directed by Jeremy Herrin

adapted by Helen Edmundson, based on the novel by Andrea Levy

Measure for Measure

Broadcast live from The Old Vic in London, Academy Award-winner Sally Field (Steel Magnolias, Brothers & Sisters) and Bill Pullman (The Sinner, Independence Day) star in Arthur Miller’s blistering drama All My Sons. Jeremy Herrin (NT Live: This House, People, Places & Things) directs a cast including Jenna Coleman (Victoria), and Colin Morgan (Merlin).

Small Island embarks on a journey from Jamaica to Britain, through the Second World War to 1948 – the year the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury. Hope and humanity meet stubborn reality as the play traces the tangled history of Jamaica and the UK and a company of 40 actors take to the stage of the National Theatre in this timely and moving story.

When a young novice nun is compromised by a corrupt official, who offers to save her brother from execution in return for sex, she has no idea where to turn for help. When she threatens to expose him, he tells her that no one would believe her. Shakespeare wrote this play in the early 1600s, yet it remains astonishingly resonant today. Artistic Director, Gregory Doran directs this new production.
