2015 Mistletoe Ball Draws Over 400 Guests As the holiday season approaches each year, the talk of the Peninsula turns to the annual Mistletoe Ball. Ladies break out their most glamorous apparel, and gentlemen sport long pants and ... shoes.

by the Belize Ocean Club.

In describing this year’s Mistletoe Ball, the term that springs immediately to mind is “Magical”, thanks in large part to preparations

While Aaron Krohn serenaded with his lyrical classical guitar, the chefs presented an elaborate buffet of culinary delights including shrimp scampi, chicken, snook, pork, and tasty sides.

Twinkling white lights dominated the venue inside and out, with tents providing elegant seating areas on the verandas, and fire pits inviting romantic conversation on the dock.

After dinner, the high energy of Gilharry 7 revved up the mood, raising party spirits even higher and keeping many of our revelers dancing until 3:00 Sunday morning. Throughout the evening, the countless smiles on residents and visitors from Riversdale to Placencia Point and beyond assured all that this year’s Mistletoe Ball was once again an unqualified a success.

Placencia BTIA 2015 Annual General Meeting Once again, Roberts Grove graciously hosted the Placencia BTIA AGM on November 27th. A review of 2015 highlights included the following: • The “new” Placencia Breeze now appears consistently each month in print, and online at www.placenciabreeze.com . The Breeze will be self-supporting within the next few months. • The “new” placencia.com website launched in early December with an inviting new look, and long term advantages for maintaining it. • The Placencia BTIA office is now fully staffed. Roxana Alvarado is training to handle the Front Desk, and Sheritt Linarez is training to provide full support as Assistant Manager. • The Placencia Breeze is now fully staffed with Wende Bryan as Editor-in-Chief and Hatem (Tom) Al-Ajba as Photo/Layout/Technical Editor. Elections for 2016 officers yielded the following roster: Chairlady Jodie Yearwood Leslie Vice Chairman Steve Christensen Secretary Kristine Small Treasurer Salva Zabaneh Councilor Cleeve Westby Councilor Bill Wohl Councilor Brandon Westby Guest Speaker Anthony Hunt, Chairman of BTB’s Airline Development Committee, discussed the addition of Southwest and Copa Airlines serving Belize, and explained conditions that attract (and detract) when major airlines consider beginning new service to an area. A lively discussion ensued regarding the status of the Placencia Airstrip and its need for repairs. Mr. Hunt encouraged Placencia to unite behind a single solution and then pursue GOB vigorously. Before the end of the meeting, members agreed to work with local organizations to move forward with one voice to encourage the GOB to make necessary repairs and to keep the Placencia Airstrip at its current location.

Meet me in the Wine Room at Turtle Inn Our in-house wine stewards named Victor & Arlene will gladly walk you though our brand new 1200 bottle wine room designed by Laurent Deroo (www. laurentderooarchitecte.com) and built by local Belizean builder and architect Margarito M. Ortiz. After 3 months we are finally able to load up many of our award winning Coppola wines from both the Francis Coppola Winery in Sonoma and the Inglenook Estate in Napa

along with many other vintages from Chili, Argentina, Italy, France and the USA. Soon vintages from the new Coppola Winery called Virginia Dare in Sonoma will be added to the racks.

Wine should be stored satisfactorily between 7–18 °C (45–64 °F) as long as any variations are gradual. A temperature of 13 °C (55 °F), much like that found in the caves used to store wine in France, is

ideal for both short-term storage and long-term aging of wine. It is a fact that wine generally matures differently and more slowly at a lower temperature than it does at a higher temperature. When the temperature swings are significant, 14 degrees or more, it will cause the wine to breathe through the cork which significantly speeds up the aging process. Between 10–14 °C (50–57 °F), wines will age normally. It is for that reason

we build this beautiful glass wine ‘aquarium’ to showcase our wines and ensure they are stored in an optimal environment here in the tropics. Turtle Inn guests will be able to enjoy a wonderful walk-through, in-room wine tastings or a small event in the garden just in front of the cellar accompanied by locally made cheeses and freshly in-house baked breads.

Wine tasting on Wednesdays and Saturdays reservations required $100.00 BZD per person.

Ms. Curlene’s 90 Birthday Celebration th

By Maz Carr

On November 28 2015, Ms” Curlene’s” Children and Grandchildren threw a huge party to celebrate Ms Curlene’s” 90th birthday. The party was attended by family and friends from all over Belize and the world. In typical Placencia fashion Ms “Curlene” might be a senior of the village but she still managed to party till 2am, while the remaining family & friends continued to 5am. Placencia folk sure do know how to throw a celebration party. Minette Curlene Westby Whylie was born to Elizabeth & Alden Westby on November 28 1925 in Stann Creek. The 2nd Eldest of 11 children

she spent a large percentage of her childhood in Placencia as her parents were fisher folk. Moving to Belize City later to look after her younger siblings to ensure they went to school. It was in Belize City that 18 year old Minette “Curlene first met her future husband Joseph Edster Vaughan Whylie, the father of her six children Julia, Cindymae, Elgin (deceased), James, John & Allen. The family lived in Belize City as this was where Joseph Whylie opened the first radio and electrical store in Belize City on Albert Street after he returned from working on the building of the Panama Canal. After her husband Joseph passed away, Minette “Curlene” returned

to Placencia along with her younger children to help her sisters care for her aged mother Elizabeth until her passing. Since that time she has lived happily in Placencia with her family and friends very contentedly, like all mothers is very proud of her children’s achievements. Ms “Curlene” is wonderful lady who is as sharp today at 90 as she was at 20, who still remembers well life in Placencia like it was yesterday.

Mariposa - Soaring to New Heights in 2016 Bruce and Sharon came to Belize in Mariposa hopes of finding reservations@ an exquisite mariposabelize beach.com location to build their vision. They were looking for a place that boasts raw beauty, a place untouched by commercialism and stress. Their hopes were fulfilled when they came to Placencia. Nestled on two acres of ocean front land and picturesque littoral forests, Mariposa is a Belizean treasure. By April Brown

Since opening their doors in 2014, the founders of Mariposa have embraced village life. First and foremost, Bruce and Sharon are dedicated to hiring their staff from Belize. With increased development and competition on the peninsula, resorts like Mariposa, with a one hundred percent Belizean staff, are gems in the growing foreigner led industry. From funding various events throughout the community to starting their very own “Pay it Forward” children’s birthday party program, the staff at Mariposa believe in the power of

connection. Mariposa proudly hosts various community events including New Years Eve potlucks and delicious Thanksgiving dinners. One of the most exciting projects to come in the near future is a community vegetable and fruit garden. Mariposa’s vast garden includes over five hundred plants, each plant labeled with educational signs for all ages to enjoy. In the past, Mariposa offered three lovely beachfront suites for their guests. The stunning and spacious suites have been a Trip Advisor favorite! With 2016 quickly approaching, Bruce and Sharon knew they wanted to expand to include more options for their guests. Expansion for resorts in Belize can be a difficult venture as there is so much to consider from an ecological perspective. The founders of Mariposa, along with the top-notch local construction company, Arregis Construction, put their heads together and came up with a solution: rustic tree houses. The six expansive tree houses are nestled amongst the forest on Mariposa’s property. Tastefully decorated through local vendors,

Mariposa is happy to announce the expansion will allow larger groups to visit and experience the magic of Belize. Guests and locals alike visit Mariposa for their award winning Caribbean facing restaurant. With plentiful breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, and access to the beach side pool, the meal and company are guaranteed to satisfy. If you have any allergies or food restrictions, Mariposa will gladly accommodate you and make sure your dining experience is the best one yet. The Mariposa bar offers extensive selections including local liquors and beers as well as imported whiskeys and wines. Mariposa enthusiastically welcomes all guests, from the local family looking for a relaxing day spent lounging by the pool, to the traveling couple seeking adventure. Creating A Coffee Culture In Placencia, Belize By Ann Kuffner - www.InternationalLiving.com

Keith Morrison loves the great sailing and Caribbean lifestyle in Placencia. Keith Morrison, 58, scoured two continents for the perfect place to start his coffee shop: an English-speaking country with a laidback, affordable lifestyle, warm weather, good sailing, and low taxes. He found all these in Placencia, on Belize’s southern coast. Now he enjoys a terrific Caribbean lifestyle when he’s not overseeing operations at his Above Grounds Coffee House.

2015 End of the World Marathon

Marathon collectors out there!!). Miss Li Chu had the most marathons under her belt with this one making number 185! And, she is 67 years old!

The 4th End of the World Marathon was Placencia held bright and Rotary Club early on Sunday, December 6. Over 190 runners were out and ready to run by 5:30Am. There were almost 30 full Marathon runners and about 160 Half Marathon runners. The Full Marathon started and ended at the ball field in Placencia, with a turn around at Caribbean Way. The Half Marathon started at Caribbean Way and ended at the ball field in Placencia. In addition to the runners there were over 130 volunteers!! The volunteer effort actually starts months in advance of the race and many volunteers have to work through the night before the race and many others have to be up and working in the wee hours of the morning. This race absolutely involves the entire peninsula. Many thanks to Dan Edwards for coordinating the Placencia volunteer effort. Also many thanks to all the businesses who supported this race both with contributions and volunteers. Without the businesses and people of the peninsula this race would not happen. By Wanda Stakutis

As always, our Water Stations were definitely something to write home about. The Maya Beach Bistro took 1st Prize for the 4th year in a row but they were faced with some very stiff competition this year. Thanks to the judges who had a difficult time choosing the winners! For the first time this year at the northern part of the course water stations we had Rotary Scholarship students helping out. All proceeds from this Marathon go towards educating high school students on the peninsula. Marathon organizer Chip Lovett from Massachusetts and part time Placencia resident, turns the money over to the Rotary Club of Placencia to administer. Over the past four years this race has generated over BZ$70,000 for scholarships, with each year the amount generated increases. For race results and pictures of ALL the runners please visit runbelize.org. There are pictures posted on Facebook as well. Many thanks to Marion and Ed Carr for all their pictures and also thanks to everyone who took pictures of this amazing race.

The weather was good for running with temps in the 70’s at start and a light mist falling at times but due to the humidity running times were a little slower this year than in previous years

Planning has already begun for the 5th End of the World Marathon to be held in December 2016. This will be bigger and better as this race just grows and grows with each year. Keep your eyes open for Marathon Specials and other fun things. If you want to register for 2016 go to www.runbelize.org - Time to start training !!!

The runners came from all around the world and from all over Belize. The contingent from Japan showed once again, representing the farthest distance traveled. As always, there were many runners who have run many Marathons (there are

Today Mr. Guy showed complete optimism that people could depend on him to cure cancer. He said that he has cured patients with cancer infections, whether it is prostate, breast, or uterus. He urged persons knowing that they are infected with cancer to consult with him, if they are seeking a non-intrusive, painless cure. His elixir consists of a mixture of herbs. Three herbs, which altogether boost the immune system, help fight the tumor and attack things that harm the body, substituting herbs for chemotherapy. One crucial advice that Mr. Guy gives any person with cancer is that they should not eat red meat.

he said, is the only way our country will recognize the importance and begin making a difference.

South America is most advanced when it comes to herbal medicine. Researchers have done a complete survey of their land and have unearthed secrets. Mr. Guy has studied the results made by these researchers and has come up with cures for Colitis, an intestine problem, Hemorrhage, Hepatitis A, B and C, and many other infections. Mr. Guy continues to cure patients that come to seek his services. He maintains that a simple headache or stomach problem can be cured with herbs, rather than buying Mr. Guy feels that there is an important pills and spending money unnecessarily. need to educate Belizeans about the cures Source: The Belize Development Trust possible found in natural herbs. With Messages from the Gods: A Guide to the Useful Plants of Belize, Drs. Michael Balick and Rosita Arvigo give us the definitive resource on the many species of plants in Belize and their folklore, as well as the natural history of the region and a detailed discussion of “bush” uses of plants, including for traditional healing and life in the forest, past and present. Both Balick and Arvigo bring important perspectives to the project, Balick as ethnobotanical scientist from The New York Botanical Garden, and Arvigo as a former apprentice to a Belizean healer and an experienced physician. The book has been decades in the making, a culmination of a biodiversity research project that The New York Botanical Garden and international and local collaborators have had in motion since 1987.

Point of View

Doing Lunch Like a Local I hope you are reading this as a visitor to Placencia Village because today’s Point of view is all about lunch, casual local lunch. You can start anywhere on the Main Road, go in either north or south direction, just keep your eyes open and your sense of smell tuned to the aromas of the roadside stands. You have undoubtedly been told of several of the wonderful beach side restaurants and the more traditional eateries… you can’t go wrong in any of them. But, just for today, step out of the comfort zone of tablecloths and wait staff. Take a walk or ride your bike, bring just a little cash, lunch will find you!

Harry’s Elixir Turned my life of despair into a life Of hopeful expectation

Went through my mind and into my body;

Enlivening it with my imagination… Ails, stress and fears-they all Went away….cancer is still around, but Not much longer it will stay....

I’ve found the means to fix myself

And then go on…

Instead of giving up before felt that

I was done…

When my immune system equalized I began

To realize that if I really wanted to – I could Fix myself if I held true – to Harry’s Elixir And told myself what I wanted it to do.. It would then allow me to fix myself And start my life anew!

Harry’s Elixir is my answer to what

I was told was unfixable cancer

Harry’s Elixir is my fix it all fixer

next to the BBQ where the food was prepared or they might bring it back to work or home. No matter, for right around $10B, bellies will soon be full. Although the offerings will vary, let’s just focus on a Belizean favorite…chicken. On Wednesdays you can also try John B’s BBQ Pork Ribs which he serves out of Radi’s across from the Police Station. It’s a tangy, saucy number and is served with typical tropical potato salad. Radi adds a couple of her homemade rolls. Malu’s Lunch Box (across from Everyday market) is another option. Sometimes she does rotisserie, so good and sells out quickly. The Wisdom Tree BBQ, almost right next door, is another hot chicken spot.

It can happen almost any time of the day but between around 11:00 and 2:00, you will notice local folks out on the road taking a mid-day break. Many will be carrying black plastic bags which probably hold a Styrofoam container of something great to eat. (Side note: Placencians are getting tuned into biodegradable, a VERY good thing!) The lunch crowd might sit right

North of these three is Fantoni’s Kitchen (across from Ming’s). While not exactly a roadside BBQ, you’ll find a great lunch special here daily and you can eat it under the thatch roof, maybe strike up a conversation with a local, learn something new about the Village. A little further north is Mim’s, try the Baked Chicken and Mashed potatoes. If you go south, go for the (chicken) Escabeche at Dawn’s Grill. It’s authentic, it’s something to write home about, but it’s only on Tuesday. Keep walking a little for Mr.Q’s BBQ (across from Wallen’s hardware). Mr. Q will ask, so say yes to his hot sauce and yes to the slaw. Mmm good. All the way down at the end of the road is Brenda’s, a local institution. Brenda doesn’t know a stranger, she will make you feel right at home and she will cook up some of the best jerk chicken you’ve ever had. Of course, I must have missed some Q along the way….so many lunches, so little time. But the point here is let Placencia’s roadside attractions lure you, it’s part of the Village experience. Embrace the al fresco! I can’t wait to get On the Road Again!!

“BMA is an undeniable force in the development of Placencia Village. Although BMA is a real estate company, it is involved in many aspects of support for the Placencia community. BMA strongly believes in the importance of education and lends support to both schools in the Village. The most remarkable and signi@icant point I have observed is that BMA works with all education stakeholders! Their support has been signi@icant to both schools. BMA dependably paid the salary of the PE Instructor at St. John’s Memorial Anglican School since 2012. When some parents began discussing the need for a private school in 2013, BMA was able to lead the business community in its support of private school Peninsula International Academy (PIA). BMA remains the leader of Placencia’s business community in educational support. Many businesses say “education is important”, but few actually demonstrate this in everyday practices. Boris Mannsfeld believes that with increased educational options, the community will prosper. Many members of the BMA Team work with PIA in various roles. Boris realized, as did his associate Frik DeMeyere, that high-level managers with children would not linger on the peninsula without a world-class school option. This belief has led BMA to donate technological assistance, assistance with navigating various governmental of@ices, computer donation and property acquisition assistance for the school. In closing, BMA is a business leader of educational support in Placencia Village. PIA hopes that other businesses develop a similar level of educational support. There is no other Placencia real estate company so involved in furthering excellence in education! As Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can change the world.” Thank you, BMA, for your ongoing support.” Ms. Selena Lucas November 17th , 2015

PHS SALSA ROCK ROCKS! What a wonderful community we have! Frisky feet salsa-ed the night away at Barefoot Beach Bar on 28 November, at Placencia Humane Society's first ever SALSA ROCK fundraiser. PHS raised BZ $3,268.00! No, we could not have done this without our community and its amazing support!

Glessner--you raised over $1,000 for PHS! Thank you! To Maya Island Air, Greta Leslie of Art and Soul Gallery, Paul Bulman, and Mariposa, who donated services and gift certificates--thank you! And to each and every single one Edgar and Melanie kept the place of you who came out to support us, alive—demonstrating, teaching, thank you! sharing their salsa techniques with the wildly enthusiastic crowd! Without them, there would have been no frisky feet! Tired of looking at that tee shirt

However, the veterinarian does NOT volunteer—PHS pays him in full for his professional services. That money comes from those who pay for clinic services, donations, memberships, product sales, and fundraisers. That means YOU. Without your financial support, PHS could not exist.
