Stacy Smith & Matthew Taylor September 10, 2011

Photography by Ellie Odom Photography

Stacy Smith & Matthew Taylor 09.10.11 love story: While I was in Graduate school, my roommate drug me along on one of her dates so that she wouldn’t have to go alone. Her date happened to bring along Matt and we never spent a weekend apart after that. We dated for two years and close to our two year anniversary, we took a trip to Ft. Lauderdale. One afternoon while we were sitting on the balcony overlooking the ocean, he went inside to get something and came up behind me, wrapped his arms around me and put the ring in my lap and asked me to to marry him. It was such a great moment! the big day: My goal for the big day was to not stress and I believe it was achieved. It was the best day and we both had so much fun! Only one disaster for the day... the cake (which was a gift) turned over while it was being transported to the venue. It was completely ruined! They had to call around everywhere and find a replacement. It wasn’t exactly what we originally had in mind, but it was still great! My Dad was a mess... he cried everytime I was around him but it made everything THAT much more meaningful. I remember both of us crying down the aisle but once the ceremony began, the preacher accidentally called me Stephanie Taylor which made everyone laugh and took the emotional edge off of everything. Our vision was classic romantic elegance. I believe all of the candles we had for the reception really brought the vision to life. Pretty much everything was DIY other than the flowers. Our colors were black and white with some touches of pink, it turned out beautiful! The wedding budget: Our wedding day budget was $10,000. Pretty difficult for a country club wedding with 300 guests. Luckily, Matt worked at the country club and so we were able to use the venue for free and got a great deal on the food and drinks. The cake was a gift. We got recommendations from Rebecca George on budget vendors for the flowers. We went a little over budget when I hired a makeup artist and hair stylist to travel on site but it was sooo worth it. We didn’t have to worry about anything! Marriage and advice: The best advice I can give is to let other people do all the work. It’s worth the extra money to hire a planner, or at least vendors to do things for you. It made everything stress free so that you can actually enjoy the planning process and the big day! If you do your research, you can find affordable vendors.

Anna Derryberry & Andrew Voyer October 9, 2011

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Erin Lee, The Collection

Anna Derryberry & Andrew Voyer 10.9.11 love story: We met Game 7 of the ALCS in 2004- the night the Boston Red Sox beat the NY Yankees to go on to the World Series. Quite a big night. We went apple picking over Columbus Day weekend. While we were going down a row of trees, Andrew dropped to one knee and proposed... even managed to sneak in “You’re the apple of my eye.” the big day: We had an impromptu air guitar performance by some of Andrew’s friends to Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child of Mine” that everyone loved. Also- while we were taking the night time pictures in front of the house, the DJ played “Sweet Caroline” for us... and then kept playing five times in a row until we were able to get back on the dance floor. I don’t know if there were any unexpected things- I literally did nothing except get married and celebrated. Mary Alice took care of everything and we didn’t have to lift a finger. If there were any issues, she kept it well hidden from us. the details: We went with a Movie Theme. We designed our program to look like movie credits, we had tickets as escort cards and each table was a different movie that we picked from our personal favorites. Our guest book was movie poster postcards which guests put into a mailbox that we painted to look like the one in Pixar’s “UP”. We also had Francis Ford Coppola wines at our bar. Our colors were “peacock” colors- sapphire, emerald, bronze, gold, teal and light blue. We had lots of color everywhere. The wedding planning process: 1 year exactly! We hired Mary Alice Sublett of A Delightful Day Events, and she was the best decision we made. The two most important things to me were photographer and videographer, so as soon as we had a location and a date, those were our next vendors. Marriage and advice: Get stuff done early! We were planning from a distance, so we got so much done before 9 months... and then didn’t do anything for 6 months. We were rushing to get stuff done the two days before, when if we had been on top of our game, we could have been relaxing. Also- if you can work it out- hire a wedding planner or day of coordinator. Not having to worry about coordinating the vendors, or setting up the decor takes off a lot of the pressure on the wedding day so you can enjoy it and celebrate with your guests.

Chelsea Hovis & Chase Standifer July 9, 2011 Photography by Forever Images

Love Story: We meet at the University of Tennessee in the Army ROTC Program. We work well together because we are both pretty odd. We find the same kinds of things funny. He asked me to marry him after a lovely steak dinner, we were at the side of a river and he got on one knee and asked. Wedding Planning: We were engaged for 1 year and 11 months, we had to push back our wedding a couple of times due to our responsibilities to the Army. We never hired a wedding planner and most of it fell to the mother of the bride and her friends. The theme for the wedding had to complement my husbands uniform. So we went with Navy blue and White. My mother put all of the center pieces together, and me and my bridesmaids put together the favor boxes. For our favors instead of doing bubbles we did several bowls of candy so that each guest could have something that they wanted. We set a 10000 budget for 200 guests. We saved alot on the catering because the place were we had the wedding had a kitchen and we did not have to hire an outside caterer to come in. We also saved on my dress because we went to davids bridal during a sale. We splurged on the honeymoon. Advice: My husband and I did six weeks of counseling before the wedding with our Chaplain. We learned so many things about each other, that even though we had been together for over four years we did not know. We got alot out of it and it was the best thing that we could have done for our marriage. When planning your wedding start at least 5 months out, because something is going to go wrong, the napkins you ordered will not come in until the day of the wedding, or one of the groomsmen gets deployed and cant make it.

Andrea Stefek & Shea Sullins July 16, 2011 Photography by Ace Photography love story: We met back in high school in 2001. Shea was the “cool, hot senior” and I was the “boy crazy freshman”. Six years later, on 10-10-10, Shea asked me to go on a walk with him at a park in our hometown that I always told him reminded me of the meadow scenes in the Twilight movies. Unfortunately, what we saw on our walk wasn’t as romantic and serene as in Edward and Bella’s fairytale. Shea pulled me up onto the railroad tracks and as we were both walking on opposite rails, seeing who could walk the farthest without falling off, we came upon a potent smell, followed by a fury of dead animal carcasses staggered along the tracks. Deer, foxes, raccoons, you name it…we saw it! Now that we were both disturbed, he didn’t know how he was going to pop the question since the romantic engagement he had imagined had immediately flown out the window, but as we were walking back to the car he helped me down into an empty creek bed, away from the world with walls of moss and flowers surrounding us, got down on one knee, and his vision of our Twilight fairytale engagement came true. As we were both shaking from nerves, and I was about to faint from shock of having a fiancé…..he apologized for all the dead animals. the details: Before deciding on the War Memorial Plaza as our reception venue, I planned on having a Midsummer Night’s Dream themed wedding, but after booking War Memorial, I knew we had to try enhance the already regal, elegant space with its’ marble floors, high-rising columns, and open roof. I tried to incorporate my Midsummer Night’s Dream ideas with my grandiose vision, by making the head table the eye-catching, romantic, main attraction with a beautiful specialty linen, antique gold candleabras, and the huge floral arrangement that was used during the ceremony. The hanging crystals on the soft, romantic floral arrangements and an open roof (meaning a night under the stars) helped to make the space feel more whimsical. Our wedding colors were champagne, amber, ivory, and different shades of pink and peach. The wedding planning process: We were only engaged for 8 months and I planned it by myself by using The Pink Book, bridal shows, and magazines. Pictures help get your vision across much easier than explaining what you see in your head. I enjoy party planning so this was right up my alley, but I knew we’d need help on the day of the wedding to make sure everything was running smoothly and being set up correctly so I hired Goody-To-Dos event planning. They did a wonderful job and I didn’t have to worry about a thing the day of the wedding…which NO bride should!

BRIDAL MYTHS

Debunked!

Is wedding advice coming at you from every angle? Determine what’s fact and what’s fiction by debunking these common wedding myths.

1

IT’S NOT REALLY A WEDDING IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW TRADITION. The first person to buck tradition and wear white was Queen Victoria (that’s right...brides have not always worn white). This is now taken for granted as standard attire as is a wedding cake, first dance, bouquet toss and something blue. A wedding simply requires an offisciant, license and witness. The celebration of said wedding should be an expression of the couple’s personalities and sometimes breaking the rules leads to new traditions that are a better fit than those of past generations.

4

The Bride’s parents pay for wedding and reception, groom’s parents pay for rehearsal dinner. Wouldn’t it be nice if Mom and Dad still footed the bill but not so with modern weddings. This myth goes out the window as at least a third of wedding costs are now cover by the couple themselves. Families today are pooling their resources and then together, determining how funds are spent for all related events.

2

Thank you notes can be sent by email.

3

THE BRIDE CAN ONLY BE GIVEN AWAY BY HER FATHER.

While email is the preferred way of communication for many a message, it is generally frowned upon when thanking your wedding guests. Hand written thank-you notes are far from out-dated and thought tedious to a generation of texters, it must be done. Appreciate this dying art and take the time to communicate as your grandparents. Years later, a friend will dig out your hand written note, carefully saved. Not your email.

This myth dates back to the days of old, when daughters were literal property of their fathers and a wedding was merely a business deal for Dad to expand his fortunes through the sale of his daughter. While the tradition still sticks to this day, I doubt very much that modern brides would describe themselves as part of dad’s estate. Your aisle escort should be a person that played a significant and supportive role in your path to find true love.

5

WEDDING LUCK (AND MARRIAGE) DEPENDS ON A SIXPENCE, SPIDERS AND SUPERSTITIONS. Here’s the thing about luck... it all depends on the belief that wearing a certain color, carrying a token or changing your behavior will shift future events to their preferred outcome. Luck is mostly used as a way to counter those things completely out of our control and has often been a way of explaining the unexplained. If only making it through the first year of marriage was as easy as saving the top tier of your cake. Make your own luck careful planning, professional vendors and a positive attitude.

6

Vendors will always give a discount if you ask.

7

If you can’t foot the bar bill, offer a cash bar.

Wedding vendors are not Mexican bazaars where you haggle the best possible deal. While a vendor may run a promotion, expecting to get a discount because you’re a bride is like expecting your doctor to run a special because you’re a patient. This doesn’t make long-term business sense. Instead, plan to attend a local bridal shows for show-only specials or giveaways and be honest about your budget and vision with wedding vendors. Professionals will work with bride to find creative ways to stretch your buck and meet their bottom line.

Cash bars are T-A-C-K-Y... as well as anything else on your wedding day that requires you guest pony up cash is tacky. Remember these are the same dearly loved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding. During the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses. Tactful Solution… If you are set on offering liquor at your wedding but fear the cost, consider a limited bar with only wine and beer (better yet keg beer, often costing half as much per serving as bottled).

10

8

Brides on a budget save big with DIY Projects.

9

Wedding Day is the Bride’s Day.

With the vastness of today’s World Wide Web, the likelihood of finding a bargain can make DIY more costly than one thinks. This is even more apparent when your inner crafter is not well match to make DIY magic (but Martha Stewart made it look so easy!). And remember time is money, even if it is your time. Be realistic about how much time will need to be dedicated to DIY projects, particularly in the last few weeks leading up to wedding day (when the to-do list is never ending and you’d rather be with you family). If the budget is stretch thin, it might make more sense to skip it all together.

While you and your groom are certainly the guests of honor, a bride with her sights set on making wedding day entirely about her is likely to be labeled a bridezilla. Weddings are as much about the happy couple and their new life together as it is a celebration for all the related family members. Instead find ways to celebrate your family or close friends and their traditions with your new love and the traditions in store for years to come. This ensures your guests feel part of a truly special event.

Your bridal party must have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Today’s bride has thrown out all the rules when it comes to bridal parties. With you closest friends and family by your side on wedding day, trying to stay in the box of specific numbers or even genders just doesn’t work. Nowadays, your maid of honor is now your man of honor, pooches are playing ring bearer and dancing to the altar is what makes wedding ceremonies personal, memorable and unique.

DIY Wedding:

assume you will save money Not all DIY projects will put your wedding budget in the black. Project costs can quickly add up as mistakes and miscalculations have you purchasing extra supplies.  Particularly, if you end up throwing in the towel and hiring a pro last minute.  In the end, it can be cheaper and easier to work with a professional from the get go, saving you the hassle, time and wasted money.

be realistic about your craftiness keep in mind you are responsible for setup (and clean-up) After spending weeks creating personal favors, programs and menu cards, these items must move from living room to wedding venue. I can’t tell you how many exhausted DIYers come wedding week are stuck setting out and clean up these projects on wedding day.  But you don’t have to be.  Give yourself a break and see if your wedding planner, caterer or venue staff can take over the set-up (and clean up!).  Most will be more than happy to help, leaving you to sit back and enjoy your wedding.

I have a love/hate relationship with Martha Stewart. With ethereal precision, she makes even the most tedious and complicated of crafts appear effortlessly mundane and obvious.  I have learned that I am no Martha... none of us are.  Find DIY success by being realistic about your crafting skills (and available time).  With so many other things to worry about on wedding day, aspiring to a professional shouldn’t be one of them.

try something for the first time Procrastinate The second most common mistake (after assuming you’re a crafting goddess) is waiting until the last minute. Case and point, it took me almost 8 months to stop thinking about refinishing my desk and get to it.  And I am still contemplating changing out the drawer pulls.    Decoupaging hundreds of tiny votives placecards seems easier enough.  Until you are wrist-deep in white goop, pulling all-nighters leading up to wedding day while you second guess the finished look.  Assume all wedding related crafting will take much longer than expected.  Worse-case scenario, you can still hand things off to the pros if finishing looks unlikely. one of them.

38 The Pink Bride Magazine

I catch myself saying all the time, “Well, that looks easy enough!” Of course I needed 40 grit sandpaper, not 80!  Yeah... so I don’t even know the real difference between 40, 80 or under what circumstances they are most appropriate.  While I have no problem bumbling through trial and error projects, likely never to see the light of day, weddings are different.  Under immense stress to figure out how all this wedding planning works, learning a new skill within the same timeline can be overwhelming.  Save yourself the stress and hand off first-time projects to professionals.

Love Story: We actually went to the same high school as each other but I would say we officially met until later down the road. We shared a mutual friend (they were in a band together), and one night I decided to go out and see my friend play. I did not know how lucky that night would be for me because I ended up meeting the man of my dreams. We talked all night long- he walked me to my car- and we even shared our first kiss(not even our first date). Needless to say we were both hooked! I would say we are a perfect match because we complete each other- I keep him looking forward to all the new exciting events and he keeps me grounded. I would say to me one of the most important components in a relationship is friendship, and he is honestly my best friend- we are constantly picking on each other and laughing at each others jokes (which I don’t know if everyone would always laugh about). The question was popped June 9, 2010- I had just got home from work and was watching an episode of full house(the one were Jesse and Rebecca are getting married). And he got home a little after me and he sat down in front of me on the couch and told me he loved me- he then immediately dropped down on one knee and asked me to be his wife!!! The Planning: We were engaged for a year. The planning process would not of made it very far had it not been for my mom! She basically did all the planning down to the smallest detail! She would run several ideas by me and I would pick my favorite, and that what we would go with. We did not hire a planner- who needs one when you have an awesome mom like I do! I got ideas off of the knot, and looking at other friends wedding pictures on facebook!! The most important thing to me about the wedding was the details! And everything came together perfectly! Our theme was all about fun!!! It was completely brought to life by my Mom!! She took lots of time out of her schedule to make sure everything was perfect for our special day! Our colors were black dresses and all black tuxes with a splash of color! All the girls wore different color sashes-either fuscia, green, yellow, purple, and blue! And the guys shared and matched up perfectly with the colors in their ties!

love story: We’ve been together since 8th grade, so you can say we are high school sweethearts. Mac is a true southern gentlemen. He continues to open up doors, tells me he loves me multiple times a day, and always kisses me goodnight. Erika is my perfect match because she fills all the gaps of my life with unconditional love and a true caring for her husband. We were getting ready to go out to dinner for our anniversary and he wanted to give me a gift before we went. So, we went to my community pavilion where we would hang out in the summers and feed the ducks. Before I could open up my gift he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I started to cry and jump up and down. I was so excited. the big day: Our minister opened our ceremony with a funny story about the groom getting distracted by the surroundings. The groom is an avid duck hunter and we were married by the lake, so you can image where he went with his story. We both cried when our sibilings (maid of honor and best man) gave their toast and let us know how much they look up to us. Our most memorable moment was our dip kiss. No one knew we were going to do it, so it made it that much better. We had bird poop on all of our chairs when we arrived to set up on the day of the wedding. the details: We went with a tree and outdoor theme. We used real tree logs for table arrangements, lanterns, and tree limbs. Our wedding cake base was a tree base. All of the tree bases and twigs were collected from the woods behind the groom’s house. Our major DIY project was the envelope holder. The groom and his father hollowed out a log for our envelopes to go. We also stamped in names for the reserved tables. As well as the Mr. and Mrs. chair signs. Our main color was chocolate and we accented in orange/red. Our budget was hard to place because of our guest number. We sat down and I explained what all I wanted and we collected estimates on everything. From that point, we decided what we should keep and what we should give up. We saved big on my wedding dress. I was able to get a dress that I could make small adjustments to that looked like a dress I had my eye on the whole time. We definitely splurged on our pictures.

Karen McNamara & Brad Frye October 29, 2011 Photography by Scoobie’s Photographic Images Love Story: We met while both working in the same car dealership in Central Illinois. Over time we became friends and when the time was right, it just kind of gradually turned into more (mostly thanks to my efforts!). We started officially dating in April 2008 and things just kind of went from there. When he graduated college with a degree in the health field, he decided he wanted to work at a children’s hospital and set his heart on Vanderbilt Children’s. I then went ahead and applied for a transfer position within State Farm. I got a job down here, and he was offered a position at Vanderbilt on my first day in TN at the new job. (Also on my first day in TN, he took me ring shopping then made me wait 1 year, 2 months before proposing!) We lived in an apartment together until we decided to buy our first house in Feb 2011, in order to better accomodate our two dogs. I figured the ring would soon be coming after we moved in but he waited until the beginning of June. True to his form, he simply asked while we were relaxing with the dogs on a Thursday night. According to him, he had a better plan in mind for the following morning, but couldn’t wait long enough for that to actually happen. It did all work out though as Friday morning we headed back to IL as planned and were able to surprise our family in person with the news. We both knew we didn’t want a long engagement so after finding a venue, we picked Oct 29th- just shy of 5 months later. Planning: We were engaged about 4.5 months. We luckily found a package at Legacy Farms, which included the catering, cake, florist, music, and linens so in 3 meetings we pretty much had the wedding planned. The package also included a wedding day coordinator, who definitely helped make sure the wedding day ran smoothly and allowed my mom to enjoy the day instead of worrying. Other than Kellie, I really didn’t use many planning tools since she handled so much of it. All I did was troll the internet for ideas and pictures of ideas that I liked (most of which we didn’t even use!). The most important thing to us during our wedding was trying to make sure we kept the wedding how we expected it, coming from IL (since we do things quite differently up north). We wanted to make sure the wedding stayed true to who we are and what we want. Big Day: It sounds cliche, but the wedding day just feels like a blur. You spend so much time planning it and then it feels like it is over in an instant. It was just unreal to us that over 150 people came, with over 95% of those guests coming in from out of state just for the wedding. I think with all those people, we were able to prove it to some of our vendors who doubted how much “northerners” turn a wedding into a party. We will never forget the infamous last line from the best man’s speech and the look on people’s faces when we requested that “Rocky Top” be played. All the little things made the day what it was and even the things that weren’t quite right were all perfect in the end.

Ashley Russell & Brian Sutherby July 16, 2011 Photography by Ace Photography

the love story: Brian and I met while I was attending a business conference in Las Vegas. While walking through the lobby of the Wynn, I had no idea I would meet the man I would marry. Two years later I moved to Dallas where Brian was working. We were in the middle of moving and he asked me if I could bring a few items from the other room. As I walked into the master bedroom I found Brian on one knee with the most beautiful ring I had ever seen. I couldn’t have been more surprised and of course I said YES! the big day: Our wedding day was everything I had dreamed of. Brian and I both knew we wanted a small and intimate wedding with our closest friends in family. We also knew without a doubt that we wanted to have our wedding at the place where we met. The Wynn, Las Vegas was the perfect setting. The outdoor courtyard was the perfect backdrop for our perfect day. My mom with the help of the Wynn made everything about the day flow smoothly. I was so overwhelmed to have all of our friends and family in the same place at the same time. I cried and laughed through out the entire ceremony. The most memorable moment for me was my grandfather walking me down the isle and seeing Brian for the first time. The smile on his face was priceless. Our only concern was that the Las Vegas heat would melt all of our guests but it was unseasonably cool the day of our wedding and the shade provided by the courtyard’s beautiful canopy gave us perfect weather for our out door wedding. the details: Brian and I were engaged a little over a year. We did everything via phone and email with the help of my mom. The Wynn took care of every request we had. We were so pleased with their attention to detail. It was truly an elegant affair. We have known Arlene and Doug from Ace Photography for several years and it was important for me to have them fly out to capture our special day. They did an excellent job and we were so pleased with the final results. The most important thing to me was the ceremony itself. We worked closely with our pastor to create the perfect vows to share in front of God, family, and friends. We were blessed to be surrounded by so much love that day. It was a beautiful start to our new life together. For our colors, we kept it classic with sleek black and white with hints of orchid green. The flowers provided by the Wynn were gorgeous! They went above and beyond to create the most beautiful bouquets I have ever seen. advice for brides-to-be: Create a budget and stick to it. We thankfully chose a venue that offered wedding packages and handled most of the details for us. I also couldn’t have done it with out the help of my mother. Make sure you have someone to help you sweat the small stuff with because it can become overwhelming! Don’t worry about pleasing everyone. It is ultimately you and your groom’s day!

Alondra Caple & Bryan Roby May 21, 2011 Photography by Roland’s Photography

our love story: Bryan and I met at Barfly First Friday April 3,2009(even though he said he knew me at TSU, but I wasn’t ready for him yet)lol! I was standing on the wall at Barfly and I saw him walking across the floor. I said to my girl, “He is fine, but he looks stuck up”. I looked the other way. The next thing I knew he was coming my way. He asked me my name, asked if I had a boyfriend, if I was married, then he said “can I have your number”. Before I could answer him he said “You are going to have to say yes once or no 1,000 times”.(so lame)LOL! So,I guess you know I said yes!!! When the club was about to close, he ran outside so he wouldn’t miss me coming out. He walked me to my car like a perfect gentlemen. Our first date was that Sunday. I met him at T.G.I.F’s. Our chemistry was so crazy!!! I was like this has got to be my soulmate. Neither one of us wanted the date to end. I went home and could not stop smiling. We were inseparable after that and we both knew that this was meant to be. It was September 8,2010, Bryan called me at work and asked if I wanted to go to P.F.Chang’s for dinner.I got off work early and was at home waiting on him. Of course,he was late. I was furious by the time he got home. I was starving and was being so mean to him. I told him we are not going to P.F.Chang’s. We are going to Olive Garden, because it’s close to our house. So,we get in the restaurant and he was acting nervous, he was looking away while I was talking to him and his head was sweating. I grabbed his hands and they were soaking wet. I was like OMG my man is on drugs (lol). I was in mid conversation with him and he jumps up from the table and says I will be back. I’m going to the bathroom. He was gone for like 10 mins.(talking to himself in the mirror, I found out later). He finally came back to the table, started to tell me why he loves me and he drops to his knees and asked me to marry him! I started to cry and everyone around us was screaming and clapping. Oh yeah, the ring exceeded all my exceptations!!!!(: the big day: What made me laugh was at the reception my cousins having a dance off on the floor like they were on American’s Best Dance Crew lol.The thing that made me cry was walking down the aisle looking into Bryan’s eyes knowing I was about to marry my soul mate. Most memorable moments were my father giving me away to Bryan to start my new life and looking around at all our family and friends having a good time sharing in our special day.Unexpected things that happened that day was I forgot to give the best man the ring and when the Pastor asked for it,I thought the best man had lost it.Panic Mode!!!I looked down and it was still on my hand lol. the details: I saw a winter wonderland wedding that had purple, turquoise and blue and that was my inspiration.I decided then that I wanted my bridesmaids to wear 3 different colors to bring my vision alive.I did not use any DIY projects.I let Rhonda Patton bring the vision together.

to Make the Most

WAYS

of Bridal Shows

Your engaged and now it is time to start planning… you’re in luck! New brides-to-be can gear up for bridal show season. With so many things to see and vendors to talk to, wedding shows can be overwhelming and feel a bit like, well the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Savvy brides see through the chaos and making the most of what bridal shows have to offer by way of inspiration, advice and vendor giveaways. With these 7 tips, you can too!

•1•

Come Prepared. The boy scouts were on to something here… Make sure you have the essentials. Have a pen to take notes and sign up for all the wedding day give-aways. Better yet, pre-print mailing labels with your name, phone number, email and wedding date to save a ton of time. Also, remember to bring your camera to capture a the wedding inspiration on display… vendors are putting their best decorating foot forward and you will want to remember all that you saw.

•2•

Don’t eat (a lot!) before you come. Weddings have food and so do wedding shows. Caterers and bakers use this opportunity to showcase great samples of their food so hold off on lunch & come hungry!

•3•

Leave the little ones at home. Children have small attention spans and even with all the cake samples, will quickly lose interest becoming dead weight. It is distracting to have fussy or bored children (or adults!) in your party while you are walking the show floor and trying to talk with vendors. Think carefully about who will join you on wedding show day.

•4•

Do your homework. It’s worthwhile to familiarize yourself with the services you are still seeking, what questions to ask and who is exhibiting at the show. This helps to maximize the time you have at each booth which can sometimes be limited with busy shows and popular vendors. Having other details such as your wedding date or budget mapped out, are also helpful… you don’t want to fall in love with a vendor only to find out that they are booked on your wedding date or out of your price range.

•5•

Come ready to make a deal. Many of the vendors will offer show-only discounts and specials for brides ready to book. If you have done your research and have your checkbook in hand, the savings will add up fast.  Keep in mind that vendors are not as busy during the fashion show so if you have you dress, use this time to talk one-on-one.

•6•

These boots are made for comfort. Remember the show floor is big with lots of walking on so leave the heels for later that night and wear comfy shoes!

•7•

FREE tickets! Many local vendors are given free show tickets to hand out to perspective brides that they would like to personally invite to the show. If you plan to set up meetings with vendors before the show, make sure to ask if they will have a booth and you just may get free tickets. our love story: Mike and I met at work. We became friends when I started a new job in the office where he works and he asked me out a couple months later. We got engaged December 2010 at the Frist Center in Nashville. We went there to see an exhibit and he took me into the gift shop to browse before we left and my ring was in one of the display cases. He wanted to be sure I was surprised and he definitely accomplished his goal! We are a great match because we work so well together and keep communication between us a priority.

the big day: The best part of the entire wedding was the decision to see each other before the ceremony. Some people said it was “bad luck” but we both knew that it would make us more relaxed for the rest of the day. There was no better feeling than walking down the aisle of the church seeing him sitting in the pew waiting for me. so that we could enjoy the reception after! I couldn’t help but laugh when one of our flower girls accidentally knocked a kissing ball off of the back pew as she was walking down the aisle in the processional. She just had to turn around and try to fix it. We got a great picture of her stopping to pick up the ball and the ushers (her dad and uncle) looking through the windows of the church doors motioning her to turn around and keep going! Another memorable moment was having our pastor play the bagpipes as he, Mike, and the groomsmen entered the church. It set the tone for the ceremony and everyone enjoyed it. the details: When we started planning there was no theme for the wedding. We were only concerned with making it what we wanted and ensuring it would be fun for our family and friends. My mom, sister, and I made the kissing balls we used for pew decorations which made for many, many hours of girl talk and laughing together in the weeks before the wedding. The colors we chose were eggplant, green, and white. The bridesmaids wore eggplant dresses, the table linens at the reception were eggplant and white, and our flowers were different shades of purples and greens. advice for brides-to-be:The best advice I can give to those planning a wedding is to make it what you want it to be. Don’t get too caught up in “traditions” or in what others say you are supposed to do. The more of yourselves and your personalities you can put into the wedding, the more special it will be for you. Have fun and try not to let the little things bother you!

Top 5 Ways

to Cut Wedding Reception Costs The average wedding reception eats up nearly half of a couple’s wedding budget... so when you’re looking for big cuts, to the reception we go. Starting savings by following my top tips for cutting your wedding reception costs.

1

Cut your guest list. I know, I know... you have heard this one before.  But when it comes to finding significant savings, you need to get cutthroat.  The average wedding guest will deplete your budget anywhere from $150-$200 per person.  Cutting only 10 guests can make a considerable impact as each added guest increases catering and bar costs, favors, placecards, tables and chairs, linens, centerpieces, invitations, thank-you notes and save-the-dates cards (as well as postage), transportation, welcome baskets... it all adds up.  Beyond financial costs, many couples feel overwhelmed by large guests and regret not being able to personal connect with everyone on wedding day.  If you want a less stress and decreased expenses, take it  from me and get to cutting.

2 3 4

Think Seasonal. Generally, when something is in season it costs less.  Rather than ask for a specific type of flowers (say pink tulips for a March wedding), allow your florist the freedom to find a similar style in your desired color that’s in season.  Same goes for food... chat up your Chef for ideas regarding seasonal ingredients that will be less costly while still meeting your overall vision.  The more flexible you are able to give your vendors, the more savings they are able to pass to you.

Decor Double-Duty. A bride looking to stretch her decor budget will get smart when it comes to decor, using bridal bouquets as centerpieces and opting for favors that entertain guests (think photobooths).  Another top secret?  If your venue happens to be fairly popular (whereas regularly weddings occur Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays), consider becoming a buddy bride.  If Bride A is getting married on a Friday night, who’s to say Bride B can’t reuse the same rented white ceremony chairs on Saturday and split the costs.  After all, the rental company won’t be picking up until Monday.  Use the venue coordinator to act as the go-between to these sneaky savings.

Open Bar Opt-Out: Here’s a little something to keep in mind... guests will drink what you offer them.  While your cousin may have started with the best of intentions, an open bar encourages travel down the irresponsible path of body shots and taste testing creative beverage combinations.  All on your dime.  As a venue director, it was not uncommon for a festive group of wedding goers to rack up a bar bill of upwards of $7000-$10,000.  Nowadays, beer and wine is the expected standard at most weddings, particularly as hosts are more thoughtful regarding budgets and guests safety.  Consider closing the bar an hour early and offer a late night coffee bar.  Even better yet, shift your reception to a daytime affair where mimosas served with specialty lemonade and flavored ice water will quench your guest’s thirst. Insider Tip:  Thinking  your wedding guests can chip in to cover bar costs by way of a cash bar is a big no-no.  Remember these are the same dearly beloved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding.  During the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses.   Period.

5

Hire a Wedding Planner. No, I’m not trying to pull a fast one over my readers... quite the opposite.    Wedding Planners are pros when it comes to money saving tricks and more than not will stretch a buck further than you ever thought possible.  With the inside track on great deals and established relationships with local vendors, their savvy expertise makes frugal fabulousness the new black.  As the old adage goes, sometimes you need to spend money to make money.  Investing in a wedding planner just might be the best advice I can give you.

our love story: We meet in Nashville after coming from two completely different worlds, Alabama and Detroit. What makes us perfect for one another is knowing that nobody but our Lord strategically allowed our paths to meet at the right time and at the right place in our lives. The question was popped out of the country on what was suppose to have been a normal vacation getaway, but turned into something much greater. It was just the 2 of us at a restaurant beachside when all of sudden a Mariachi band appeared, then a photographer capturingthe moment he dropped down on one knee and changed our lives forever. the big day: What made us laugh--My father in law’s dancing What made us cry--When we made special gift presentations to our mothers during the Ceremony to Marvin Sapp’s song “Never would have made it” & the Father/Daughter Dance Most memorable moments--Wow! There were so many...Me walking down the aisle, exchange of vows, my Aunt’s rendition of the Lord’s Prayer, our Sorority & Fraternity Chants, riding in the 1939 Packard to the reception Unexpected things that happened---The musician showed up late; however, we had a slideshow and music to fill the void the details: The vision/theme: Sophisticated Summer Sparkle Colors: Black/White/Yellow (accent color) Sophisticated Summer Sparkle may be charaterized by mixing elegance, class, and sophistication with the sparkle of summer sun. I brought this vision to life by utilizing black and white damask linens in a sea of yellow lighting accented with crystal centerpieces. DIY projects, of course, from designing the entire design layout of the ceremony and reception to the favor boxes. For favors, I used white take out boxes wrapped in black/white damask print packing tape with a yellow favor label & yellow ribbon on the handle. I also made customized favor signs, table numbers covered in rhinestones, a welcome sign at the reception, and much much more. marriage advice: The best I advice we can give is to Enjoy Every Moment of the planning process & Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff! What we looked forward to most was living under God’s Covenant as husband & wife with honor for him & each other. We didn’t have any surprises the first few months, mainly because we put it all on the table in the dating stages in order to build a sollid foundation moving forward.

Julie Kirkham & Richard Colbert October 22, 2011 Photography by Ellie Odom Photography the love story and proposal: Logan and I met through my sister, Katie, at the University of Tennessee in the Fall of 2006. We became best friends almost immediately. A year later we began casually dating, and it didn’t take long for us to realize that our friendship had grown into a much greater relationship. It was during that winter that I realized that I had never met another person that completed me quite the way that Logan does. Still to this day, I can’t not smile when he’s by my side. Each of our loves for outdoor adventures, sports, our dogs (and, of course, Outback Steakhouse :) ) is multiplied when we can enjoy them together. On December 12th, 2010, we set out on a Colorado Christmas vacation, driving 19 hours from Nashville to Denver. On the 13th, we traveled for a day trip to Fort Collins, followed by an evening on Pearl Street in Boulder. Logan searched every back road between Fort Collins and Boulder for the perfect place to stop that afternoon, but to no avail. We eventually ended up in Boulder with the ring still in Logan’s pocket. We explored the Pearl Street Mall and ate dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. After dinner, the sun had gone down and Pearl Street was alive with Christmas lights from end to end. On our way back to the car to call it a night, we detoured through a courtyard covered with monuments and lights. There by a fountain, Logan dropped to one knee and asked me if she would be his forever. After confirming several times that this was, in fact, a real proposal and that Logan was serious, I said “yes.” In reality, I think we both knew that I was forever his from the very beginning. the big day: We arrived at Evins Mill after all getting our hair and make up done at a local salon. Despite a bit of an eye-liner crisis experienced by some of the bridesmaids, we made all made it in one piece! The day was a perfect, sunny day. Logan arrived shortly before I did, with both of our dogs who served as our “Mutt of Honor” and “Best Dane”. The salon called to tell me that I had forgotten my veil, but luckily someone went to get it and that was truly the only mishap of the day. While we were getting ready, I gave my Mama a bridal portrait that I had printed on a canvas, and together we did our best to get rid of all of our tears for the day. I’ll never forget walking down the aisle to Logan for our first look pictures, and our first look at each other that day--he looked so handsome in his tux, but his smile outshined everything. Preparing to walk down the stairs to my Dad was tough, but as soon as I got to him he whispered some encouragement for both of us that carried us all the way down the aisle. Hugging my Dad before he handed me to Logan was probably the toughest, but at the same time most exciting, part of the day. My dog, Emma, cleared the tears from my eyes when she started wimpering because I wouldn’t turn around and give her attention during the ceremony, I couldn’t help but laugh. The ceremony went perfectly, and our first kiss was a moment that I will cherish forever. The reception was great from the food, to the DJ, to the cakes. I realized in the middle of our first dance that we forgot to give the DJ the cut down version of our song, so we didn’t a little part of it choreographed and had to have the DJ fast-forward through it, which made for a good laugh and quite a memorable dance! We finished the night by riding away on our tandem bike.

Big Day: Wow, the day really flew by. We got married in the early afternoon so we woke up early to start getting ready. Dustin had arranged for all of the girls to spend the night before at the hotel Indigo in Nashville so we would all wake up together and be really close to the hair salon and Scarritt Bennett. Dustin and his groomsmen all spent the night at Dustins moms house in Hendersonville. We didn’t want to see each other until I was walking down the aisle. I thought I would have all these crazy neves the day of but I felt calm and happy. One funny thing that happened that I didn’t know about until after the wedding was that one of my bridesmaids had her zipper break and to be sewn into her dress right before we were set to walk out. I’m really glad we had packed a sewing kit!! We danced the night away at the reception at the cannery ballroom. One fun thing that we did was a “dollar dance.” The dj announced that if you wanted to dance with the bride or groom to bring them a dollar during the following song. We laughed so hard and had so much fun with that. We made $350 to take on our honeymoon! After the reception the wedding party all went out on a party bus and continued the celebration downtown. That was probably the most fun part of the night. Wedding Details: When planning our wedding we wanted something very dramatic and regal. We chose black, white, and red as our colors. We loved the cathedral setting with the tall ceilings and stained glass in the Scarritt Bennett. I wore a black birdcage veil that was designed for me by Aruro Rios, a designer I found on Etsy. Dustin and his groomsmen all bought their all black fitted suits from English Laundry. We had a lt of fun putting our personal touch on everything we did. We had a hot air balloon theme at the reception to go along with our amazing engagement photoshooot with ace photography. We both have tattoos and an edgier style but mixed that with our love for 1940’s classic style. I actually have a hot air balloon tattooed on my arm. It represents simplicity, romance, and childhood. I wanted that to portray in our wedding. My sweet dad helped a lot with our DIY projects. He was actually at the Cannery Ballroom hours before the wedding blowing up and assembling our hot air balloon centerpieces. He also made our fingerprint guest book tree. At the end of the night when we made our formal exit as a married couple, everyone released red balloons. It was a very magical night.

Making wedding cakes is more than baking and frosting cakes -- it is art that tells a story. When I design a wedding cake, I take ideas, colors, impressions, style, taste, and even beliefs from my brides and grooms to individualize their wedding celebration in cake. Of course, some grooms love to see their alma mater, a tractor, a hobby such as chess, or even a favorite hat made from cake. I am committed to the freshest, most high-quality ingredients for both my cakes and icings.
