Professionally Speaking

FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 2011

Dear Community,

Preserve, Protect, Defend are usually the terms that you expect from our local police departments. However, there is another law enforcement (and creation) agency that we need to Preserve, Protect, and Defend the Mortgage Interest Deduction (MID). We call them Congress. Many years ago, Congress determined that the best way to preserve the American Dream of Home Ownership was to institute the MID. At the outset of the greatest recession in our nation’s modern history, both the President of the United States and Congress said we must deal with the housing debacle to get the economy going again. It is an historical fact that the housing industry has led the recovery from each of the previous recessions since World War II. At this point, our elected leaders have undergirded the banks and the auto industry; but, have not done the same for

When you need to know... talk to Mickey DeBernard

housing. As they now seek ways to reduce the gigantic debt that our nation has incurred, there will be the typical attempts to solve a large part of the problem on the backs of homeownership by eliminating or significantly reducing the Mortgage Interest Deduction. The simplest way for Congress to show certainty to the housing market is to preserve the MID and oppose legislation that would

undermine it. Please show your support of stable housing policy by contacting Congressional Representatives to co-sponsor House Resolution 25, a bipartisan resolution offered by Rep. Gary Miller. Realtors believe that wide co-sponsorship of this resolution will send a strong signal that Congress remains committed to a housing recovery.

Home fire sprinkler systems a practical investment

(ARA) - If you're building a new home, you will likely spend thousands of dollars in upgrades designed to make your home more beautiful. Carpet, cabinet and lighting upgrades can easily drive up the total cost of the home significantly. But how much are you willing to spend to make your home safer for you and your family? The reality is that for the same amount of money it would cost to upgrade your carpet or cabinets, you could install a life-saving fire sprinkler system. On average, the cost to install a fire sprinkler system in a new home is 1 to 1.5 percent of the total building cost. It has been proven that smoke detectors alone are not enough. They merely provide a warning but do nothing to extinguish deadly flames. Fire sprinkler systems, on the other hand, are designed to provide occupants with added time to safely escape. Industry statistics show that when a smoke detector is used in combination with a fire sprinkler system, it can reduce the loss of life up to 98.5 percent an increase of 48.5 percent over what smoke detectors alone can do. "Residential fire sprinkler systems more than pay for themselves in the form of peace of mind," says Matthew Kuwatch, global business director for BlazeMaster Fire Sprinkler Systems, the most specified nonmetallic

fire sprinkler systems in the world. "The decision to install a residential fire sprinkler system is a smart one, but is especially beneficial for families with young children, elderly adults or disabled individuals, because their chances of dying in a fire are more than twice as high as they are for young and middleaged adults. Fire sprinkler systems work to help delay a fire and, in some cases, completely extinguish it." If you're still concerned about cost, be aware that there are newer technologies on the market that have proven to be more cost-effective, as well as more reliable, than traditional steel fire sprinkler systems. BlazeMaster fire sprinkler systems, for example, are made from a revolutionary, hightemperature specialty material that has effectively been used in lifesafety applications for nearly 30 years. Lightweight, corrosion-resistant and easy-to-install, BlazeMaster fire sprinkler systems offer significant cost savings in the form of reduced material and labor costs. They additionally offer superior flame and smoke characteristics over some other nonmetallic piping materials. Beyond the obvious safety benefits, the installation of a residential fire sprinkler system can also result in reduced insurance premiums because of its ability to limit property

damage. Automatic fire sprinklers are individually heat-activated to spray water only in the immediate area of the fire - often with only one sprinkler operating. The amount of water discharged from a sprinkler head is onetenth to one-hundreth of the amount of water typically disbursed if the local fire department is called in. In some regions of the country, fire sprinkler systems aren't just a smart investment, they are required by code. Recent changes to the International Residential Code (IRC) mandate that new single-family homes be built with sprinklers beginning this year, although it is at the discretion of individual states to decide when the new code changes will be implemented. Such changes in legislation reflect increased education and growing awareness regarding the effectiveness of and need for home fire sprinkler systems. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), more than 500,000 household fires occur in this country alone each year, resulting in 5,000 deaths - an average of 14 per day.

Make sure your family is adequately protected - wherever you live. To learn more about the benefits of residential fire sprinkler systems, visit or the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition at

How to save time on your household chores

FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 2011

(ARA) - Until it's affordable for everyone to get a robot maid, household chores aren't going away. Since merely ignoring your duties is not an option, experts say you can at least save time by modifying your habits so you can work more efficiently. By working smarter, and sometimes, purchasing the right equipment, you can cut into the time you spend cleaning and devote more time to doing things you love. Here are a few examples of how you can save time around the house. Laundry If you're like most folks, you probably consider laundry to be one of the most timeconsuming household chores - 66 percent of adults said doing laundry is a major time drain in a nationwide poll conducted for LG Electronics. So what better place to start when looking to become more efficient? One of the best laundry tips is to make sure you are doing full loads, reducing the number of total loads you will have to do and helping you save money and energy. If you are in the market for a new washer and dryer, ultra-large capacity is definitely something to consider. Some of the most popular ultra-capacity washers use steam technology that provides additional energy savings and advanced cleaning options, but independent labs show they aren't all the same. TrueSteam washers from LG, for instance, clean 21 percent better than the other leading brand's steam cycle,

This Weekend

SATURDAY, APRIL 30 • 12 PM - 2:30 PM

according to third party lab testing. Another convenient washing option includes a speed cycle that quickly washes slightly dirty clothes in 15 minutes. In addition, these washers are ENERGY STAR qualified, using 50 percent less water and are up to 86 percent more efficient than average washing machines, even with their larger capacity. To prevent wrinkling and the subsequent need for ironing, retrieve and fold clothes immediately when they are dry. Ending drying sessions with a cool-down session can also prevent wrinkles. Today's bestperforming advanced clothes dryers include a steam generator, which produces true steam that is added to drying cycles to help remove wrinkles. For the best performance, be sure to look for true steam, not washers and dryers that just inject cold water spray mist into the cycle. Vacuuming Vacuuming can either be something that saves time or causes more headaches depending on how you use your vacuum cleaner. Be sure to use the right attachments for best results. Also, be sure you maintain it properly to keep it functioning well. Always make sure your filters are clean and dust collector is empty. With these types of

timesavers in mind, the LG LuV400 vacuum even includes an attachment that vibrates cushions and mattresses to loosen and remove dust and an extra-long cord that reduces the need to plug into different outlets as you vacuum. The vacuum also features a unique dust-compression system that holds up to three times more dust and produces easy-to-discard dust cakes. General cleaning tips Here are a few general rules to follow when cleaning: * Clean top to bottom. Obeying the laws of gravity is the key to avoiding cleaning in circles. * Clean as you go. When cooking, soak dishes immediately after use to prevent more work later. * Keep cleaners in your shower so you can clean yourself and your shower at the same time. * Stick to a schedule. Don't stress out about missing certain items when things get busy; having a plan is the easiest way to organize tasks so you don't feel pressure to get everything done at once. And if you're the one doing all the cleaning, don't be afraid to delegate some tasks to other members of the family. If everyone can take care of the things they are particularly good at, all of you can enjoy more free time.

The only people who benefit when a house is built are the family members who get to live there, and the builder who constructed and sold the home, right? Wrong. The positive impact of new resi-

dential construction is far-reaching, bringing benefits to families, businesses and services throughout a community immediately, as well as for years to come. According to economists at the National

Association of Home Builders, the one-year estimated local impacts of building 100 single-family homes in a typical metro area include $21.1 million in local income, $2.2 million in taxes and other local government revenue, and 324 local jobs. But what does that economic impact mean in the real, dayto-day lives of community residents? Just think about it. When a family moves to a community and buys a new house, they will likely shop at local stores to buy furniture and accessories to decorate the home. They will fill their car’s gas tank at local gas stations so they can get to the stores, have local mechanics work on the car when it breaks down or needs the oil changed, or buy a

new car at a local dealer when it’s time to replace the old one. The family may need to hire local companies for regular services to maintain their home, such as landscaping, house cleaning, pet sitters or pool upkeep. The children will enroll in local schools. This increases enrollment, meaning more teachers, janitors, cafeteria workers and other school support staff will need to be hired. Those kids will also join sports leagues and other activities, buy equipment and pay registration fees that provide stipends for referees and coaches. All of this economic activity puts income into the pockets of

local business owners and their families, who can then afford to go out and spend money themselves, which recycles even more money into the community’s economy. The new family also pays local and state taxes. These tax revenues help pay for a wide range of government services, including school teachers, police departments, refuse collection, parks maintenance and road repairs. Over the long term, as the families who move into new homes become part of the community, their positive impact continues. NAHB estimates that those 100 new homes also provide the community with

additional, annuallyrecurring impacts of $3.1 million in local income, $743,000 in taxes and other revenue for local governments, and 53 local jobs. Families who buy a newly built home enjoy benefits including safety, amenities, energy efficiency and floor plans to fit a modern lifestyle. But the advantages of new homes extend far beyond the buyers and the builders—residential construction has a positive, direct impact on the local community for years. To learn more about the home-buying process or to find new homes for sale in Moore County, visit the Moore County Home Builders Association’s website at or call 910-944-2992 for more information.

Cool ways to curb air conditioning costs this summer

FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 2011

(ARA) - Cooling a home during the summer with a window air conditioning unit can account for nearly 50 percent of an average homeowner's utility bill. And in the hottest regions of the country, cooling off with central air can generate up to 70 percent of your home's utility bill. But not to fear: There are several ways to curb your electricity use this summer. One simple way is to turn up the thermostat by one degree during warm weather. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that you can save up to 3 percent on your summer energy bill for every degree you raise your thermostat for 24 hours. Set your thermostat between 72 and 78 degrees. Each degree setting below 78 will increase your electricity use by as much as 4 percent and that's sure to add up to several hundred dollars over many hot summer days. Other ways to reduce your home's cooling costs include making sure your air conditioning unit is running at peak performance, replacing the HVAC filter at least every three months or as needed, turning on ceiling fans and making sure they are blowing down (not up), opening windows during cooler evening hours, closing curtains and blinds where sunlight radiates heat into the home and sealing all air leaks that let cool air escape outside. If you like do-it-yourself home improvement projects,

installing a radiant barrier in your attic is one of the most effective energy-saving projects that's sure to help you save precious dollars on your air conditioning bill. What's more, you can receive a 10 percent tax credit - up to $500 - from the government. A radiant barrier works in your home similar to the way a reflective foil car shade works in your car. Just as a car shade keeps the interior of an auto cooler when it's parked in the sun, radiant barriers keep your home's interior cooler when installed in your attic, where the sun's radiant energy is absorbed. New do-it-yourself energy-saving home improvement products like Energy Starcertified Enerflex Radiant Barrier are easy for homeowners to install themselves, and they quickly realize reduced monthly electric bills. Enerflex Radiant Barrier is unique in that one person can install it, without the need for tools, as it flexes into place between the rafters on the under-

side of a roof. An attic radiant barrier is a safe, proven building material for reducing the strain on a home's air conditioner. And that leads to significant energy savings. When you can spend a few hours over a weekend and complete a project that saves money month after month, it's hard to ignore the benefits. Professionals in the construction, roofing, energy and heating and cooling industries have long known the benefits of installing a radiant barrier, says Rick Jordan of EcoRite Products, a major radiant barrier manufacturer. Only recently have products been manufactured specifically for the DIY installer market. Radiant barriers reduce the radiant heat gain that permeates a home when the sun beats down on it. Studies on installed radiant barrier products show attic temperatures are typically reduced up to 30 percent during the summer months, which can translate to a 30degree heat reduction on hot summer days.

Enerflex radiant barrier panels flex into place between the rafters, with no tools needed. This makes it possible for installation to be a simple, one-person, do-it-yourself job.

In fact, a radiant barrier is most effective in the summer months as it dramatically reduces the workload on your air conditioning unit. In general, installing a radiant barrier can help homeowners reduce air conditioner use and save as much as 20 percent on electrical bills. "Based on my 30 years of experience in teaching energy efficiency, I believe that if you live in the South
