Accent Your Home With Proper Landscaping

After you have bought the new home of your dreams from your builder, you will probably immediately start thinking about personal decorating touches that you can add. When considering these personal touches, don't think just about the interior of

food, firewood or just a beautiful scene. They can also attract birds and other wildlife. • Before planting trees, it is important to choose species that will thrive under local conditions. For instance, in areas with high temperatures and little water, plant trees that are drought tolerant. By the house. planting trees that The landscaping grow naturally in around it will also be your area, you can very important. be pretty sure they Trees can affect will be successful. everything from your Consult a local nursheating and cooling ery, landscape debills to your resale signer or arborist for value -- some sursuggestions on veys have put this trees that will thrive increased value in where you live. the range of 10 to 15 • Location on your percent. tion. Choose spots with adequate sunlight and water, and make sure the trees are protected from possible pests. A mesh fence can do much to prevent animals from injuring your saplings. Try to estimate how long the tree will take to become fully grown and what the tree will look like at full size. • Trees are most vulnerable in their first years of life and should be tended with special care. Newly planted trees should be watered

deeply and on a regular basis. Allowing a hose to drip at the base of a tree for several hours will permit the water to soak deep into the soil and encourage deep rooting. This will give the tree a better chance of surviving drought. • Many personal decisions go into tree planting. Some trees are better than others for providing a buffer against noise and unwanted views. Certain trees can be shaped into topiaries to accent the architectural detail of your home.

Others will grow into stately trees perfect for a swing or a shady spot to picnic! The Moore County Home Builders Association consists of building industry professionals eager to personalize your home. Whether designing your landscape plan or making quality upgrades, the members of our association will make your vision a reality. The nation’s homeowners spent more that $114 on home remodeling in 2009, and a good portion of that money was spent by sellers hoping to boost their home’s market value. But which projects are best for generating a solid return-oninvestment? The National Association of Home Builders offers these recommendations: Home office remodel: Millions of Americans work at home and that number is growing each year. Making sure that your house has a state-of-the-art space for potential home office workers is a surefire way to increase our property’s value. Replace the roof: The roof literally tops off a buyer’s first impression of your home. You can even enhance the entire

“I will provide an outstanding mortgage experience from application to closing”

character of your house by changing the color or style of the roofing tiles. Landscape the yard: Backyard landscaping can transform a ho-hum area into an incredible entertaining center by including a few plantings plus a simple water feature or fire pit. Most importantly, a truly usable backyard increases your home’s total living space. Replace old windows: A home with new energy-efficient windows says good things about the overall quality of your home, and you may be able to defray some of the cost with tax credits.

Remodel the kitchen or bath: Even small changes pay big dividends. Simply painting the walls and upgrading the hardware and fixtures can generate higher profits when you sell. Protecting your home during the holidays

PAGE D6

THE PILOT — SOUTHERN PINES, N.C.

(ARA) - The holidays provide a great opportunity to connect with friends and family and to celebrate the joys of the season. Unfortunately, they are also viewed as a time of opportunity for would-be burglars. "Taking steps to protect your home during the holidays isn't radically different from what most people should be doing the rest of the year," says Thomas Leman, a retired 27-year veteran of the police force and criminal justice professor at Argosy University Online. Yet, according to the FBI, victims of burglaries suffered a loss of $4.6 billion in property in 2009 alone. "The problem," says Leman, "is that most people get lured into a false sense of security and tend to let their guard down thinking that crime won't happen to them." Just as the holidays seem to start with the change in your home decor, so should your view on safety. When it comes to holiday decorations, modesty is definitely the best policy, says Leman. "While you may love the look of a Christmas tree in your front window, expensive decorations on display can be a signal that there are valuables inside your home worth a criminal's time. Gifts under the tree are the most blatant of these displays and are a welcome invitation for thieves." Leaving gifts tucked away until the last possible minute is a quick and easy safety precaution.

Whether you are home or out and about, take care to close and lock all doors and windows and set alarms. "Given that most people have extra valuables and gifts in their homes during this time, it's a good idea to practice home safety whether you're there or not," says Leman. USAA, a leading provider of banking, insurance and investment services to the military community, advises customers to install tapered inch-long deadbolt locks on exterior doors to make it harder for a wrench to twist the door open. Leman adds that a

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2010

simple dowel placed in a sliding glass door or window can be an inexpensive way to secure those entrance points as well. "Alarms or closed circuit video surveillance systems are a great and inexpensive way to protect your home," says Leman. A well-lit and well-groomed home not only shows well, but provides an important measure of safety. "The better the lighting in your home and yard, the fewer places there are for criminals to lurk," says Leman. USAA recommends homeowners use the "3 foot/6 foot

rule," trimming branches to 6 feet off the ground and shrubs down to 3 feet to minimize hiding places for burglars. While leaving the box for your new 55-inch flat screen on the curb will win you cool points with the neighborhood and the title of host of the next big football party, it could land you in trouble with potential burglars. "When it comes to big ticket items and valuables, boxes on the curb can be an advertisement for the new valuables in your home," cautions Leman. "Take the time to break down boxes and recycle them or put them on the curb over time and inconspicuously," he advises. If you plan on traveling for the holidays, you need to plan ahead for home safety. Whether you opt to have a neighbor collect mail and newspapers or have your service stopped by calling the post office and your neighborhood delivery person, be sure neither piles up at home. "Set your lights and television on timers," suggests Leman, who also advises homeowners to have a neighbor park their car in your driveway intermittently to keep up the appearance someone is home. While keeping your home safe may not top the list of your holiday "to dos," taking a few extra precautions can go a long way to make sure your season stays merry and bright.

'Tis the season for home efficiency

(ARA) - As the cold weather and holidays approach, homeowners are preparing to spend more time indoors. Winter utility bills can get expensive, and in an economic climate as biting as the frost, consumers are watching every penny. From insulation, to appliances, to faucets, these upcoming months are an opportune time for homeowners to make their homes more efficient, reducing costs and the family's carbon footprint. Aside from the more obvious advice, such as unplugging electronics when not in use to avoid phantom draws, many long-term solutions will help you save energy and water every day without any added effort. "Homeowners are very aware of their responsibility to use less water and energy each month, both for environmental and cost-saving reasons," says Paul Patton, senior product development manager at Delta Faucet Company. "But as the weather gets colder, few are willing to give up their long, hot showers." Patton adds that while changing habits and behaviors is worthwhile, homeowners should also consider products that are engineered to offer comparable experiences with built-in efficiencies. Here are five easy home improvement tips to help make your home more comfortable and efficient this winter: Replace your windows: Energy-efficient windows can save families a lot of money in the long run and although replacing them can be a significant investment, fall is the perfect time to replace old windows before the freezing temperatures blow through. Some replacement windows can be built to meet or exceed Energy Star standards in all climate zones, making your home more comfortable and efficient. Install ceiling fans: You might think that ceiling fans are only for the summer months but in the winter, a ceiling fan can push heat down from your ceilings, circulating warmer air around the room. Your heating system won't have to work as hard, cutting heating costs. Install a water-saving showerhead that doesn't sacrifice the experience: Warming up in a hot shower on a cold morning doesn't have to feel like a guilty pleasure. Delta Faucet offers water-efficient H2Okinetic Technology (R) that blankets the body in a warm spray while using up to 36 percent less water than the industry standard of 2.5 gallons per minute. The technology manages droplet size, velocity, spray pattern and thermal dynamics, which ultimately covers the bather in larger water droplets that retain their heat longer. More than 50 percent of Delta bath suites feature showerheads and handshowers that meet the latest specification introduced by the U.S. Environmental Protec-

tion Agency's WaterSense (R) program. Dodge the draft: Check for drafts and potential air leakages around doors and windows, in the attic and basement, and throughout the home. To locate drafts, aim a fan at the cracks outside of doors and windows. On the inside, have someone hold a lit candle. If it flickers, you have a draft that you'll need to treat by sealing with caulk, spray foam or weather stripping. Or have a professional conduct an air leakage test using diagnostic equipment. They can make specific recommendations to improve the energy efficiency of your home. Install a water-efficient faucet: Often we let our faucets run longer than needed, wasting water and running up our monthly utility bills. The Linden (TM) pull-out kitchen faucet can help reduce the amount of water homeowners use in the kitchen with a water-saving default flow rate of 1.5 gallons per minute. For bigger tasks such as filling a pot, a simple toggle on the wand will increase the flow to a high-performance setting. Remember, this year as the temperature falls, so too can your monthly utility bills. Many federal, state and municipal incentives will reimburse you for making your home greener saving you green as well. Check out the Department of Energy website for more information on tax credits for which you might be eligible. Taking on a few easy DIY projects around the house could mean significant savings in return.
