‘An Excellent Class’ Future Is Bright for County’s 2010 Graduates BY EMMA WITMAN Newsroom Intern

et out your cameras and tissues, graduation is upon us. As close to 900 Moore County seniors receive their degrees this spring, the sentiment will be bittersweet. Speaking about his seniors, North Moore High School Principal Scott Absher says, “We’re gonna miss them after they graduate.” Dr. Susan Purser, superintendent of Moore County Schools, expressed her warm regard for the class of 2010, wishing them the best. “My advice to them would be to keep the fire burning, go for it,” Purser says. “The future’s there, it’s for them, and it’s a bright one, because they are so very talented. “Those seniors are dynamite,” she added.

G

Graduation Ceremonies Set Pinecrest High School will hold graduation for its 423 graduates at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 12, in the John W. Williams Stadium. In case of rain, graduation will be moved to 8 p.m. Saturday. If that time is rained out, graduation will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 13, in the Robert E. Lee Auditorium. Commencement for Union Pines High School’s 293 graduates is to be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at the Union Pines High School Stadium Field. Union Pines’ rain date is Saturday at 4 p.m. outside on the field. If it continues to rain on the afternoon of June 12, the ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 13, on the stadium field. If it is still raining Sunday afternoon, Union Pines’ graduation will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 13, inside the high school auditorium. North Moore High School, with 107 graduates, will hold its commencement on Friday, June 11, at 7 p.m. in the school’s football/soccer stadium. The rain location will be the Cecil E. Hackney Auditorium at North Moore High School at 7 p.m. June 11. Absher expressed his appreciation of the time spent with the class of 2010. “They’ve been a lot of fun to get to know the last four years,” he says. “They’re just really nice, an excellent class.”

Absher stressed his graciousness for the example they had set. “They’ve been excellent role models for our underclassmen,” he says. The O’Neal School held its graduation ceremony for 45 seniors on Friday, May 21, in Owens Auditorium at Sandhills Community College. Alan Barr, headmaster of The O’Neal School, stressed independence and individuality. “Be true to yourself. Define success for yourself,” he says. “Don’t let anybody else define it for you.”

Outstanding Accomplishments While there are too many accomplishments from the

class of 2010 to remark on them all, there are a number that stand out. I Data released by the state Department of Public Instruction in August showed yet another increase in Moore County’s average SAT score, this time six points higher than the year’s previous at 1,045. With the writing section included, the score totals 1,532 — a four point increase. The county’s critical reading and mathematics combined score exceeded both state and national averages at 29 points higher than the national average and 39 higher than the state. I This year’s Pinecrest football team had a record-breaking season, even more impressive than last year’s successful

program. The fourth-seeded Patriots advanced to the second round of the 4AA playoffs and finished second in the Southeastern Conference. They also played their first home field playoff game in the 40-year history of the school. With a final record of 10-3, their wins were the most in the school’s history. I Two Moore County seniors came away with state individual titles at the NCHSAA state indoor track and field championships in February with

record-breaking performances from both. Lexie Schustrom, of Pinecrest, won the 3,200-meter run in the 4A competition and Union Pines senior John Minott won the triple jump in the 3A meet. I Neena Wanko, of Union Pines, not only won the individual 3A state title in tennis last fall but accomplished it in dominating fashion, defeating her opponent 6-1, 6-0. She was the runner-up the year before and finished her high school career with a record of 109-4.

I Pinecrest High School’s theater program impressed this spring. The Pinecrest Players was one of two North Carolina theater programs selected to participate in the Southeastern Theatre Conference’s 61st Annual Convention in March. Thirty students from the honors-level ensemble traveled to Kentucky for the convention. I Union Pines also asserted their dramatic prowess. Senior Blake Schrein was a semifinalist at the English Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition in May, held at Lincoln Center in New York City. Schrein earned her trip by winning the ESU Sandhills/Pinehurst Branch regional competition. I For the third year in a row, Pinecrest High School’s Speech and Debate team took top honors at the Tarheel East National Qualifying Tournament held inMarch in Chapel Hill. I Coach Matt Ragsdale described the 2009-2010 year as being a “historic season” for Union Pines wrestling. Viking’s seniors Randy Stevens finished third, Marquis McKinney fifth and Kaleb Rierson sixth at the state championship meet at Greensboro Coliseum in March. I The Union Pines Marching Band has something exciting to look forward to this summer. The band was honored to be chosen as one of a few that will play in the Washington, D.C., Independence Day parade this summer. I Four seniors, each from one of the county’s high schools, were nominated for the Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills’ Junior Builders Cup this May. A North Moore High School senior took away the honors and $2,500 scholarship. John Spivey II demonstrated he was the most “outstanding graduating senior in Moore County.”

O’Neal Graduates 46 The O’Neal School held its commencement on Friday, May 21, in Owens Auditorium at Sandhills Community College. Former O’Neal Upper School faculty member Matt Peal, class valedictorian Alex Guannan Zhang and headmaster Alan Barr addressed the students. Peal focused on the importance of keeping oneself open to new experiences, and counting integrity and honesty as the most valuable human assets. Zhang addressed the audience, remarking on the uniqueness of each of his classmates and how they each contributed in making him the young man that he is today. Barr and Hu Poston, chairman of the O’Neal board, distributed diplomas and congratulated the class of 2010. As Mr. Barr officially announced the class of 2010,

mortarboards were replaced by caps representing the college that each of the students will attend. The 46 graduating students are recipients of scholarships in excess of $1.1 million. Students will attend local North Carolina colleges and universities, as well as colleges such as the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, University of Georgia, Washington University in St. Louis, The Citadel and Emory University, among others. The daughter of Stan and Jean Bradshaw, of Pinehurst, Bradshaw graduated from The O’Neal School on Friday, May 21, and will be attending Washington University in the fall of 2010. Approximately 200 colleges and universities currently underwrite more than 4,700 National Merit Scholarships in each annual competition. Only National Merit Finalists can be considered, and winners are chosen by officials of the sponsoring college or university. From more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program, only about 16,000 were named semifinalists. In order to advance in the competition and be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, a semifinalist had to become a finalist by fulfilling several requirements that included submitting a detailed scholarship application and presenting a record of very high academic performance.

CALVARY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL K-2 through Grade 12

A thorough academic education in a disciplined Christian atmosphere, with an emphasis on character building and patriotism and love of God and country.

• Educating students since 1973, we have graduated 36 classes of students. • Students who attend CCS from the early grades through high school usually average approximately 2 to 3 years above grade level on the Stanford Achievement Test (a nationally standardized test), which is much higher than those who transfer here from public schools. • Many of our graduates have completed college and gone on to careers in education, medicine, law enforcement, etc. Among those who chose not to attend college, many hold responsible positions in various professions, while others have established successful businesses in construction, child care, mechanics and technology. • Our teachers are qualified and are required to meet higher moral and educational standards than public school teachers. Those standards are set by the Bible.

SCC Holds Graduation Ceremonies For Adult High School and GED BY KAREN MANNING Special to the Pilot

Sandhills Community College held a graduation ceremony for the Adult High School and General Education Development (GED) graduates on Friday, May 7. “This is always a very special and emotional time as we recognize students who have overcome many obstacles to walk across the stage,” says Martha Bergman, senior director of Basic Skills. “Graduation gives my staff and me the opportunity to congratulate our students on their hard work and to remind them that this is only the first step in reaching the goals they plan to achieve on their path to a brighter future and a meaningful career.” Dr. John Turner, senior vice president for Instruction and Student Services, welcomed the guests and trustees and presented 43 graduates with their diplomas. A highlight of the evening was the SUCCEED Bell Choir performance, which was led by Edna McNeill, and vocals led by Rose Highland-Sharpe. The SUCCEED Bell Choir is made up of SCC Compensatory Education students. Having completed her GED at Sandhills Community College in 1993, Taiwan born Pai-i-Tsung delivered an inspiring speech, assuring students that if she can reach her educational goals as a foreign-born, non-English speaking student, they can do so as well. Tsung began her college education in the English as a Second Language (ESL)

Episcopal Day School Graduates Shine CONTRIBUTED Next year, they’ll be making new friends at different schools, but many of the 22 rising sixthgraders who graduated from Episcopal Day School Thursday, June 3, say they’ll never forget the family-like friendships they have formed there. Students gathered in the chapel of Emmanuel Episcopal Church to hold a graduation ceremony, featuring David Woronoff, publisher of The Pilot, as speaker. “This is such a loving community,” says new graduate Charlotte Ix of the 50-year-old elementary school in Southern Pines. “I feel so fortunate to have grown up here.” Her classmate, Campbell Jourdain, concurred that he

would miss all the people he had met. “I’ll really miss the teachers,” says Jourdain. “But I’m happy to be going to Southern Middle.” Headmaster Jay St. John remarked on the various adventures and accomplishments the group had celebrated together. “Their environmental Soundto-Sea trip; their service to our community, including mentoring our 3-year-olds; and their strong characters, as shown through their actions, all make this a remarkable class of students,” says St. John, who read an original ode in honor of the class at the ceremony. The ode appears in the EDS advertisement on page 14 of this special section. “They are great students, but even more wonderful individu-

als; one of our finest classes ever,” says fifth-grade teacher Sandy Mashburn. “Watching them grow to become school leaders has been a remarkable thing to see.” Pre-K teacher Barbara Yearby agreed that she has enjoyed watching the graduates’ personalities develop. “This is a group of highly energetic individuals who are creative, intelligent, independent thinkers,” says Yearby. “Some of them are rather shy while others are outgoing … in a good way!” Mashburn added that she was especially impressed by this class’ commitment to put their

faith into action through projects like the Beta Club’s Pennies for Peace, an initiative that made it possible for students to send more than $1,000 in school supplies to Afghani children. “Their integrity and concern for others shine,” says Mashburn. “As we send them out to schools around the county, we are sure they will be a blessing to their future classmates and teachers.” Before bidding goodbye to the young grads, Yearby said she was certain of one thing: “They will all be successful,” she says. “ They are the embodiment of the EDS spirit.”

Sandhills Community College Graduation Held May 15 BY KAREN MANNING Special to the Pilot

One of the largest crowds to ever gather on the Boyd Library Green on the campus of Sandhills Community College was present for graduation on Saturday, May 15. The graduates were a diverse group. Some students came to Sandhills straight out of high school to earn a technical degree, diploma or certificate. Others planned to begin at Sandhills and transfer to a fouryear university and continue their education. Parents and grandparents came back to college after choosing to change careers or were laid off from a job. The SCC Jazz Band entertained the growing crowd as families and friends chose their seats. The processional began at 10 a.m. After the national anthem, led by the SCC Choir, a rousing performance of “Lean on Me was enjoyed. Dr. John Dempsey welcomed the crowd. He congratulated the graduates and noted retiring faculty members. After welcoming several dignitaries, Student Government President Ravon Sheppard was introduced. Sheppard addressed the graduates with a motivating and encouraging message followed by George Little, chair of the Board of Trustees. Little welcomed the crowd, introduced members of the board and spoke to the graduates. Dr. Susanne Adams presented the Mary Lumen Meyer Award to Charity Haskins, and Professor Wendy Kauffman presented the Faculty Award to Alison Boone. Dr. Dempsey presented the valedictorian of the class, Pai-I Tsung, with the President’s Award. Degrees, certificates and diplomas were then awarded to the graduates.
