Christmas Spectacular! • December 2014 • 3

The Merriest of Christmas Greetings to all of our Philly POPS Friends and Families! It’s the holiday season, and we are delighted to share the joy of the season with you at our Christmas Spectacular! concert led by our celebrated guest conductor, David Charles Abell. We are thrilled to welcome David back this year, and we are pleased to announce his return for next year's performances. While David now resides in London, he loves to come back to Philadelphia — the city where he grew up and first acquired a love of music. As many of you know, our December 5th premiere was a very special night in Philadelphia. We launched this concert series with I’ll Be Home for Christmas Spectacular — A Salute to the Military and First Responders. Through the generous support of our title sponsor, Miller Beverage Company, as well as many other corporate and individual contributors, we were able to provide 2,000 free tickets to members of the military through Liberty USO of Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, and to our police and firefighters through the Philadelphia Police and Fire Departments. It was an evening we will always remember, shared shoulder to shoulder with true American heroes. During this most wonderful time of the year, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to you for your continued support of The Philly POPS. We would also like to thank the talented and dedicated musicians of the Philly POPS orchestra, our Music Director Michael Krajewski, The Philly POPS staff, and the management and the staff of the Kimmel Center for all of their hard work throughout the year that makes our concerts possible. It’s now time for the fabulous Philly POPS to wrap us up in the magical sounds of Christmas. On behalf of our Board of Directors, we offer our best wishes for a wonderful holiday season! Your friend,

Frank Giordano, President and CEO Encore Series, Inc., The Philly POPS

It is with much sadness that we share the loss of our longtime friend, Al Rinaldi, 77, who served as a board member for Encore Series, Inc., presenter of The Philly POPS. For many years, we worked with Al, the CEO of Jacobs Music Company, as the area’s exclusive representative for new and authentically restored Steinway & Sons pianos, Steinway-designed Boston and Essex pianos, and many other highly respected new and used piano manufacturers. In 2012, Al was honored to receive the Steinway & Sons Lifetime Achievement Award, which has only been presented to one other recipient in its history — pianist Van Cliburn.

REMEMBERING BOARD MEMBER AL RINALDI In addition to being a highly respected businessman, Al was also a great musician. We have warm memories of the Al Rinaldi Quartet performing in the Verizon Hall lobby during our VIVA, PHILADELPHIA! concert in October 2013. He was thrilled to entertain our guests, and we were honored to have him perform.

It's an all-new Philly POPS®, playing the music audiences know and love to hear. Now in its 36th season, The Philly POPS, presented by Encore Series, Inc., enjoys revitalized energy under the music direction of Maestro Michael Krajewski. Peter Richard Conte was appointed Choirmaster and Organist of St. Clement’s Church in 1991. Since then, he has established an internationallyacclaimed ensemble of 18 professional singers which performs an extensive repertoire of music in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. Each Sunday, and on special feasts of the Church year, the choir offers a full setting of the ordinary of the Mass, including the Credo, several motets, and the Propers for the Mass, sung in Latin to their original Gregorian tones. The St. Clement’s Choir has recorded several compact discs on the DORIAN label, all of which have received international praise.

In addition to his duties at St. Clement’s, Mr. Conte is Grand Court Organist of the world famous Wanamaker Organ in Macy’s in Center City Philadelphia. He performs on the six-manual, 28,500-pipe instrument twice daily, six days per week. The Wanamaker Organ is the largest fully-functioning musical instrument in the world; Mr. Conte was appointed Grand Court Organist in 1989, and is only the fourth person to hold that title since the organ first played in 1911. Mr. Conte is highly regarded as a skillful performer and arranger of organ transcriptions. He has been featured several times on National Public Radio and on ABC television’s Good Morning America and World News Tonight. His monthly radio show, The Wanamaker Organ Hour, airs on the first Sunday of each month and can be accessed online via He performs extensively throughout the United States and Canada under the management of Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists, and was a featured artist at the American Guild of Organists’ National Convention in 2002, and at the International Organ Festival in Aosta, Italy, in September 2004. Dottie Giordano, Co-Chair “I was drawn to the POPS through my love of music. My husband Frank is the President and CEO. I serve on several boards alongside my husband and am delighted to have the opportunity to be a part of the Pops family.”

Cindy Wanerman, Co-Chair “A friend gave us tickets 20 years ago. At that first concert, I turned to my husband and said, 'I want a subscription.' We’ve been coming regularly ever since.”

The Friends Committee is dedicated to helping a wider circle of friends get to know the Philly POPS. The POPS brings the great American Songbook — the work of popular composers and performers, Broadway tunes, and movie themes — to captivated audiences each year. We are certain that others will enjoy the celebration that is the POPS experience as much as we do. Our mission is to bring the enthusiasm we feel for the POPS to everyone in the area. We thought that a series of community parties and get togethers, organized through Community Hosts would be the right introduction for folks who weren’t familiar with the magic. We kicked off the Committee with three August events — one at Cindy's home in Ambler, a second at Dottie’s and Frank’s Moorestown home, and a third at the Giordano's cabin in Medford Lakes. In September, the Rittenhouse Friends were hosted at the Michaelsons’ home, and we plan a December South Jersey tree lighting party in celebration of the holiday season. Let us know if you’d like to be a Community Host for one of our events, or if you’d like to attend a Friends Party in your neighborhood by emailing Philly POPS Friends Committee at We’d love to get to know you.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Dressed in holiday style

Everywhere you go

In the air, there's a feeling

Take a look in the Five and Ten

Of Christmas

Glistening once again

Children laughing, people passing

With candy canes and silver lanes aglow

Meeting smile after smile

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks

And on every street corner, you'll hear It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas Toys in every store

Silver bells

But the prettiest sight to see

Silver bells

Is the holly that will be

It's Christmas time in the city

On your own front door

Ring-a-ling Hear them sing Soon it will be Christmas Day

FROSTY THE SNOWMAN Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul With a corncob pipe and a button nose And two eyes made out of coal Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale they say He was made of snow but the children know How he came to life one day There must have been some magic in That old silk hat they found For when they placed it on his head He began to dance around Oh... Frosty the snowman Was alive as he could be And the children say he could laugh And play just the same as you and me

RUDOLPH THE REDNOSED REINDEER Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer Had a very shiny nose And if you ever saw it You would even say it glows And all of the other reindeer Used to laugh and call him names They never let poor Rudolph Join in any reindeer games Then one foggy Christmas Eve Santa came to say Rudolph, with your nose so bright Won't you guide my sleigh tonight? Then all the reindeer loved him And they shouted out with glee Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer You'll go down in history

I’M DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS I'm dreaming of a white Christmas Just like the ones I used to know Where the treetops glisten And children listen To hear sleigh bells in the snow I'm dreaming of a white Christmas With every Christmas card I write May your days be merry and bright And may all your Christmases be white
