Estate donation could lift community fund to $2 million Desmond Devoy

desmond.devoy@metroland.com

The Perth and District Community Foundation will be coming into some serious estate money, which could grow its fund to more than $2 million. Steve Hillier, the outgoing president of the foundation, made the announcement on Thursday, March 12, at The Stone Cellar restaurant in Perth, as he chaired his final annual general meeting. “We learned a couple of months ago that we were coming into a (portion of)… a large estate, over the course of this year,” said Hillier, the first installment of which was recently received. “This could help us grow to the $2 million mark.”

He noted that the foundation had grown a lot from March of 2009, when its assets sat at $204,000. “We have had substantial growth,” said Hillier, with their fund now sitting at $1.25 million. That day in particular, the foundation distributed $42,000 in grants to several community groups. “We are looking forward to increasing that in the future,” said Hillier. “It’s nice to see the fund moving in the right direction,” said accountant Howard Allan, during his report to the foundation. “It’s nice to see that it will have a bit of a leap this year.” While Hillier will be handing the keys of his ofSee FOUNDATION page P2

Perth ranks well on waste diversion report

Desmond Devoy/METROLAND

Robin Heald of Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Lanark County, is presented with a plaque marking her years of service on the board of the Perth and District Community Foundation, from outgoing foundation president Steve Hillier at the foundation’s annual general meeting at The Stone Cellar restaurant in Perth, Thursday, March 12.

Waste Diversion Ontario (WDO) released their 2013 Residential Waste Diversion Rates on Feb. 26, 2015, with Perth coming in at a rate of 50.14 per cent and the only rural municipality in eastern Ontario to make the list of 20 Ontario Municipalities. The residential waste diversion rate is the percentage of recycling, organics, and diversion efforts to reduce residential waste entering landfill sites as reported to WDO. Every year, WDO collects reports with this data from over 400 municipalities across Ontario. Grant Machan, director of Environmental Services attributes this success to the town’s comprehensive curbside waste programs which include weekly organics collection, alternating

yellow and blue bin recycling collection, and biweekly waste collection. Mayor John Fenik applauded staff on this success stating, “The Environmental Services Department continues to undertake innovative and engaging initiatives that are aimed at educating our community on the importance of sustaining our environment and ways to improve our waste diversion. We are very proud of the numbers released by WDO and thank the community for supporting and using our recycling programs.” For more information on the Town of Perth’s solid waste management initiatives or to find out what items should be placed in your green bin, blue bin, yellow bin or waste, please visit www. perthcomposts.com.
