MISSION

YO U N G M U S I C I A N S O F TA L E N T N E E D S U P P O RT.

Left alone with their gift, even the most exceptional young artists will struggle and many may fail to achieve their full musical potential. Without this next generation of world-class musicians, the musical world and its audiences will be the poorer. The Perlman Music Program welcomes young musicians of rare and special talent into a richly supportive musical community. Through intensive summer programs, year-round mentoring, and on occasion, an international study or performance tour, the program offers unparalleled musical training for students who play the violin, viola, cello, bass and piano. With a faculty led by Itzhak Perlman and comprising some of the most gifted musical talents of our time, the Program offers an artistic and personal experience that changes students’ lives forever. The Perlman Music Program seeks to ensure that the very best musicians can take advantage of this opportunity, regardless of their economic background or financial means.

OUR SHELTER ISLAND HOME

Shelter Island is nestled between the North and South Forks of Long Island. It is surrounded on three sides by Shelter Island Sound and on the fourth side by Gardiner’s Bay. It can be reached via ferry from Greenport, NY from the north, or from North Haven, NY from the south.

In 2000, a visionary group of individuals – David Geffen, Jo Carole and Ronald S. Lauder, Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg, and Alberto Vilar – purchased the 28-acre campus on Shelter Island for The Perlman Music Program. It is Toby’s belief that our students need a safe environment to present their work, and a warm and welcoming public is an important part of this unique learning process. Shelter Island has become a musical oasis for our students and the community. Since 2000, we have taken on capital projects to improve the campus, culminating in the Kristy and James H. Clark Arts Center, which opened in June 2012. The Clark Arts Center provides modern living quarters, practice spaces, teaching studios, and an intimate recital hall ideal for chamber music concerts and recitals. The new space enables PMP to provide year-round programming for students, alumni, and the East End community.

SUMMER MUSIC SCHOOL

THE “LITTLES” PROGRAM The Summer Music School (SMS) – affectionately nicknamed the “Littles” program – is our signature and longest-running program. Established by Toby Perlman in 1995, the SMS is a seven-week residency on Shelter Island for violin, viola, cello, and bass players ages 12-18. With an esteemed faculty led by Itzhak Perlman, the SMS provides a supportive and nurturing community focused on the overall well-being of its student body. Many of our students and alumni – over 300 in our 19 years – have already embarked on remarkable careers in the musical world by filling orchestra positions, joining prestigious faculties, and forming their own ensembles. While the curriculum is rigorous, PMP’s approach is based on a strict 2:1 student to faculty ratio, a non-competitive atmosphere, and an emphasis on extra-curricular activities and free time to “just be kids”. At the Summer Music School, a typical day begins with stretching, breakfast and chores, followed by personal practice. After lunch, students engage in private lessons, chamber music coachings, chorus rehearsals and free time. Itzhak Perlman conducts orchestra rehearsals after dinner during the week,

and students perform solo and chamber music Works in Progress concerts for the community on weekends.

W H AT IS A W IP ? Works in Progress concerts, also known as a “WIPs”, are an essential part of PMP. Works in Progress means exactly that: students who are in the process of learning a piece are invited to perform a selection in front of a supportive audience. Any student, with the approval of their teacher, can volunteer to play in a WIP. Students are encouraged to take artistic risks and explore their repertoire. This simple but essential idea is at the core of PMP’s values.

COME PLAY WITH US

ANNUAL FAMILY CONCERT Sunday, July 14, 2013

11:30 AM | Shelter Island Campus A PMP tradition, the Family Concert is eagerly anticipated each year by students, faculty, and the local community. Free and open to the public, the concert provides a fun introduction to the basics of classical music. Crayons and an activity book are distributed to young fans, along with juice boxes and snacks! Though focused on children, the family concert is enjoyed by all ages and presents excerpts of Mozart and Beethoven alongside popular favorites like the Beach Boys. Merry Peckham, Associate Director, invites the audience to clap and sing along, leads a Q&A, and introduces the much-anticipated student skit. Past years have seen musical adaptations of The Avengers, Harry Potter, Snow White, and Star Wars, presented to a very excited young audience. After the concert, kids are invited to an instrument “petting zoo” with our students, who help them try out youth-sized string instruments. TO RESERVE SEATS, CALL 212.877.5045 OR EMAIL SPECIALEVENTS@PERLMANMUSICPROGRAM.ORG

THE PMP ORCHESTRA Conducted by Itzhak Perlman, the PMP String Orchestra is truly one-of-a-kind. Every summer, new and familiar faces join together under the Maestro’s baton to create a seamless ensemble of energetic and joyous music-making. Excellent communication and a collaborative atmosphere are the hallmarks of the PMP orchestra, resulting in the achievement of the very highest musical standards. The orchestra has studied and played such great works as: Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti, Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Dvorak’s Serenade for Strings, Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence,Vivaldi’s Concerto for Four Violins, and famous quartet arrangements for string orchestra. The orchestra meets 3-4 times a week while camp is in session. Most rehearsals are open to the public. Summer 2013 performances will take place on August 1 at Southold High School and August 2 at camp to celebrate the Annual Summer Benefit.

WHY DO WE CHANGE SEATS? If you’ve seen a PMP Orchestra performance, you’ve probably noticed a lot of moving around. After each movement students stand up and rotate their seats. At the end of the concert, the first violinist may be sitting in the back of the section, and vice versa. Every student has an opportunity to shine as players trade seats. Apart from learning each part, this movement sharpens the ear and focus, and teaches students that every chair in the orchestra is equally important. 15

CHAMBER MUSIC WORKSHOP Celebrates 10 YEARS

Led by esteemed cellist and teacher Merry Peckham, PMP’s Chamber Music Workshop (CMW) continues to grow into one of the country’s most prestigious summer chamber music programs. The workshop invites young artists (ages 18 and up) to devote two and a half weeks of intense study to masterworks of the chamber repertoire. Intensive rehearsals and coachings, absorbing masterclasses, late night sight-reading sessions and a marathon final concert weekend are all much-loved hallmarks of the workshop. The CMW is led by an all-star roster of artist-faculty: Paul Katz, Merry Peckham, Itzhak Perlman, Patrick Romano, Peter Salaff, Roger Tapping, Don Weilerstein, and Vivian Hornik Weilerstein. CMW alumni have gone on to successful careers as members of internationally renowned ensembles and major orchestras, artist performers at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and other esteemed venues, and faculty members and artists-in-residence at major music schools. A special concert weekend kicks off the workshop this year, in celebration of its 10th anniversary. Classical Collaborations pairs young artists with the CMW faculty in two extraordinary performances of chamber music masterworks, presented in Southampton and East Hampton. In just a decade, the Chamber Music Workshop has truly become a cherished part of the East End’s cultural life.

WHAT IS A MASTERCLASS? A masterclass is an opportunity for student ensembles to work with a renowned artist, and for an audience to see incredible teaching in action. At a PMP masterclass, an artist-faculty member coaches several student chamber groups in one intensive session. Each group has an opportunity to delve into a score and bring it to life with the help of their mentor. After performing a movement, students get valuable feedback which they immediately apply. After some concentrated work, the group performs once again with a fresh approach and new insight, to the delight of an audience experiencing the magic of a master teacher in action. 2013 CMW MASTERCLASSES TAKE PLACE JUNE 10-14, 7:00 PM, SHELTER ISLAND CAMPUS

RSVP TO SPECIALEVENTS@PERLMANMUSICPROGRAM.ORG

WHAT IS CHAMBER MUSIC? Often described as “the music of friends,” chamber music is by definition performed by small ensembles, typically 2-9 players. An intimate experience for performers and audience alike, chamber music is among the most cherished and challenging of all classical music repertoire.

We are only as good as our faculty, and our PMP faculty is as good as it gets. Each individual is extraordinary, and together they are a perfect team. Understanding that a positive attitude is the key to success, they are demanding while maintaining an encouraging - and even loving - attitude toward the students who, of course, flourish. What strikes us is their common agenda, which is all about the student. Thank you, PMP faculty, and bravo. Love, Toby and Itzhak

WHY DO WE SING? “If everyone in the world sang for just a little bit each day, therapists would be out of work.” – Toby Perlman PMP is a training ground for the finest young string players in the world – so why is choral singing such an important part of the curriculum? There are a lot of reasons, starting with the fact that it is a non-competitive musical activity that the whole PMP community can take part in together. Singing is a new skill for PMP students, and is an opportunity to bring everyone together on the same level. Brand new students stand right next to older kids and faculty, and all voices come together as one. 27

RESIDENCIES Throughout the year, residencies give PMP students the opportunity to travel to a new place, meet and reconnect with friends, and participate in rehearsals, coachings and performances with their mentors. In 1999,Toby and Itzhak Perlman brought PMP students to Israel for PMP’s first ever international residency. Since then, PMP has returned to Israel, performed in Shanghai, and established annual residencies in Florida and Vermont.

STANFORD, CA

STOWE,VT

September 22, 2013

October 23-27, 2013

PMP is kicking off its 20th anniversary season with its first-ever trip to the West Coast! A concert at Stanford University’s Bing Concert Hall on September 22 will feature the complete PMP String Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Maestros Itzhak Perlman and Patrick Romano. We are grateful to Kristy and Jim Clark for their leadership support of this landmark event.

Now in its third year, the Fall residency in picturesque Stowe, has brought a new dimension to PMP. Students and faculty enjoy four days of chorus, orchestra, and chamber music study, in preparation for two concerts in the beautiful Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center. In what has become an annual tradition, local string students are invited to prepare a piece and rehearse with the PMP Orchestra and Maestro Perlman. PMP is grateful to Sidney and Morgan Stark and the entire team at Spruce Peak for bringing this residency to life.

AWAY WE GO... SARASOTA, FL

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL

December 19, 2013-January 5, 2014

April 10-26, 2014

PMP is delighted to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its Sarasota Winter Residency in 2013. Hosted by the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus, with leadership support from the Perlman Music Program Suncoast, the residency is a perfect wintertime home away from home for PMP. Students and faculty love returning each year for rehearsals, Works in Progress concerts and performances in a warm and friendly atmosphere. On November 6, a special concert showcasing Itzhak Perlman and alumni at Sarasota’s Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall will start off the residency preparations on the perfect high note!

Toby and Itzhak are thrilled to bring PMP back to Israel for a fourth time. In a “Littles”-style two-and-a-half week residency, at the Tel Aviv Conservatory, talented Israeli string players will again be invited to work alongside PMP students, forming bonds and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Inspiring faculty members will be on hand for private lessons, coachings, orchestra and chorus concerts for the whole community to enjoy.

ALUMNI

THE

R

PMP’s mentorship means more than concerts. An annual Alumni Reunion Weekend invites graduates to gather for a weekend of companionship, activities, and chamber music reading. Sunday Salons at the Perlmans’ NYC home throughout the year offer sightreading sessions, companionship and a family dinner. Adopt-a-Little pairs PMP students applying to colleges across the county with PMP alumni at those colleges to provide guidance throughout the application process. The Alumni Support Group, founded by a few recent graduates, is a regular meeting at the Perlmans’ home to discuss the transition to a professional career, challenges and opportunities, and the chance to perform for one another for feedback and support. Significant grants from The Annenberg Fund and Barnett Foundation help alumni launch their careers.

ARTS CE RK N A L

TE

A fall and spring recital series at the Neue Galerie New York gives students the chance to take artistic risks and refine their repertoire in front of a supportive audience. Thanks to the beautiful new Clark Arts Center, students and alumni now perform year-round for the East End community. Students and alums are regularly invited to perform alongside Itzhak Perlman in prestigious venues throughout the country and beyond – recent appearances include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Kennedy Center, Adrienne Arsht Center, and The Biologica Festival in Mexico.

The Perlman Music Program provides instruction, performance opportunities, and support to its students and alumni throughout the year and across the country.
