Vagrant ‘market’ in Wetton LAILA MAJIET

LANSDOWNE residents are cautioned not to buy from vagrants selling second-hand goods. Vagrants living near the Wetton train station have an informal market where they sell clothing, shoes and household appliances. A concerned Lansdowne resident says vagrants even sell kitchen items and children’s toys. “I cannot say whether these have been stolen, but it is most likely items that have been donated to them,” he says. Sanna Williams (27), who lives under the bridge and sells clothes, says she items are donations from people in the area. Williams has been living at the informal settlement under the bridge for the last six

months. “Some of the things which get given to us I keep for myself, but I sell the rest which I don’t need or can’t use,” she says. However, police say selling these goods is illegal. Constable Nkululeko Mnyaka, the spokesperson for Lansdowne police, says a person found selling second-hand goods without the correct trading certificate will be fined R1 000 if it is their first offence. “For the second offence a docket will be opened for prosecution. People should be aware that buying stolen goods is a serious offence and anyone found in possession of stolen goods will be arrested and prosecuted, therefore we advise all public to refrain from buying goods without proof of ownership or a purchase till slip,” Mnyaka explains. Williams says they are forced to sell the donated items. “We need to eat. I do not work.

I used to char, but there is no work for me anymore,” she adds. While Williams sells clothes, other vagrants sell car chargers and CDs. Lansdowne police precinct has a secondhand dealers forum which aims to educate second-hand dealers on the buying and selling of second-hand goods. Mnyaka says the Second-hand Goods Act is an important tool in combating crime, especially crime relating to stolen items. He says the purpose of the Act is to control the sale of these goods. However, it is understood that vagrants trading at the train station are not regulated by the Second-hand Goods Act as they do not trade from a registered business premise. The forum meets once a month at the Lansdowne Police Station boardroom. For more information contact Warrant Of-

ficer Shaun Petersen on 0 (021) 700 9010 or 0 072 271 7130. Meanwhile, vagrants have managed to jump the fence at the bridge and sleep in the enclosed spaces. Williams says fencing off the open spaces around the bridge is not enough to deter vagrants from setting up shack. Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott says Wetton station is in line for future development. “There are no immediate plans to further fence the area as this will be addressed at the time of development,” she says. She urges residents to report vagrancy to the City of Cape Town’s Displaced Peoples Unit on 0 (021) 596 1999 or 0 0800 225 669.

Remembering a great mother In our home, she advocated the importance of spirituality and education. She touched the lives of many – often in ways her husband and six children learned of only after her death. My mother inspired her younger sister to work and make her own money in an era when women stayed at home. My mother always had kind words to say about others, regularly sent monetary gifts to the mosque, offered a warm meal and groceries to anyone who stepped into our home and always gave the gift of her smile, even when she had the most excruciating pain. I was blessed to have slept be-

Dear reader,

I once again dedicate my column to my beautiful, courageous mother who passed away 17 days ago after living with breast cancer for years. I also dedicate this column to all those who have lost their mothers and to every individual and organisation championing the fight against cancer. This is the most difficult piece of writing I’ve had to do in my 20year career and I am writing every word with a broken heart that yearns for my mother. The day my mom died, my entire world ceased to exist and after two weeks of unbridled grieving, my pain at losing my beloved mother is as intense as the day she was diagnosed with cancer. I am not alone in my loss as my mother left behind a legacy of love, generosity, inspiration and tenacity.

side my mother the last night of her life and to remain with her until the end. This was painful, but I would not have had it any other way. The day before my mother died, many of her neighbours visited and said prayers at her bedside. Nearly every one left crying. This is how my mother touched lives. Yes, she was a fiery, strong, independent, smart woman who achieved her goals and who, even throughout her illness, remained the matriarch, giving her family clear directives. At the same time, my mother was a soft, loving, deeply-caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-

grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and neighbour. My family and I continue to draw strength from one another, and from the torrent of love, support and compassion from relatives, friends and colleagues – for which we are very grateful. Among the many beautiful messages we’ve received, were these poignant words: “My mother is the keeper of my childhood and the historian of my life...” The keeper of my childhood is gone; that chapter of my life has closed. My mother was my mummy, my best friend, my role model, my confidante, my fan, my financial advisor, my counsellor. She loved me in a way no other can and will. I have been truly blessed and honoured to have had her as my mother and will continue to love and cherish her and my memories of her, forever. Till next time, go well!

Oldies go for fun GREY skies and rain could not dampen the spirit at the Olympiatrics. Seniors came from all over to pit their skills against each other at the event at Vygiekraal Stadium in Athlone on Thursday. This Olympics for seniors started with an opening ceremony and a march past the judges. Teams dressed in their seniors’ club gear and drum majorettes led the way with charisma and style. Not to be outdone by the recent Olympics and Paralympics, the Olympiatric events are not for the faint-hearted. Track and field events included an egg-and-spoon race, sack races, dress up, duck walk and passing the ball. Events for the frail included seated activities such as hoop shoot and ring toss. A total of 30 seniors’ clubs participated in the Olympiatrics – 17 of

which are supported by Ikamva Labantu. Participants are from, among others, Hanover Park, Khayelitsha, Guguletu and Fish Hoek. In true Olympiatric form, medals were handed to winners. Ikamva Labantu’s seniors clubs participate every year and last year the Nonkqubela Club in Philippi took top honours in the medals tally. Participation in this event is one of their key programme activities aimed at achieving active ageing for seniors in their own communities. Ikamva Labantu is showcasing Seniors Month with a campaign intended to encourage the public to “help make a granny or grandpa smile” in October. A unique feature of the Olympiatrics is the huge integration and sharing shown across races, genders, clubs and communities.

Neighbours take a stand LUZUKO ZINI

THE LINES of communication between Hanover Park residents and Philippi police have been opened thanks to the establishment of “court committees”. These structures have been established to open dialogue with the sector commanders, with locals acting as the voices on the ground to report suspected gang activity. Philippi police spokesperson, Lieutenant Lance Goliath, says the establishment of court committees will assist police in fighting crime. “There are courts which have established committees but more than 20 courts still need to,” he says. “When the police and community work together we can fight crime an make our communities safer, and that’s what these committees will be doing. Any resident from Hanover Park can be part of the committees, no one is excluded.” Last week, officers held a community meeting with tenants living in Johndown Walk, where locals braved the rain and cold to have their say. Resident Faieka Stevens (31) says police are not doing enough to ensure their safety. “Our children are often playing outside when the shooting happens. We don’t feel safe anymore. The police say they will patrol but we don’t see them,” she says.

Ashmed

“Enough is enough” says Johndown Walk resident Belinda Pelton. “Every night we sleep in fear. The bullets can come from anywhere. It’s time to take these gangsters and lock them up,” she says. People are on edge and are scared to venture out after 18:00 in fear of being shot, Pelton adds. Children also had their say, pleading for the bloodshed to stop. “We must stay inside because the gangsters are shooting,” Taylon Bush (13) says. “Every day someone is killed. This must stop.” Weldon Cameron, the spokesperson for the Hanover Park Community Police Forum, says they welcome the initiative. “We are very glad that the police are coming together with the community to find a solution to the violence.,” he says. “This will help to find the perpetrators and the community may know the people responsible for the shootings.” A 48-year-old man, who chose to remain anonymous, says the shootings are a concern to him and identified a hotspot in the area. “My family has been here for 30 years. The shootings are getting worse. The open field near Johndown Walk is where most shootings happen,” he says. He also believes police visibility is lacking in the area. “We need the police to assist us by patrolling and that will help keep the community safe,” he says. . Call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Students unite NURENE JASSIEM-MARCUS

AS MOST schools prepare for the final term, 27 schools in the province still wait with bated breath to hear if their doors will close permanently come December. Provincial education minister Donald Grant announced earlier this year the department would review factors such as ageing school infrastructure, dwindling learner numbers and persistently poor learner outcomes when deciding on the closure of the 20 rural and seven urban schools. Bronagh Casey, Grant’s spokesperson, says the final decision will be announced this month. One of the schools under review is Athwood Primary in Hanover Park, which has been repeatedly burgled and vandalised. “It has become economically unviable to continue to maintain ongoing vandalism and damage to the school where it re-occurs,” says Casey. But Abdurahman Khan, chairperson of the Movement Against Illegitimate Leaders (Mail), argues the department’s plans are part of a plot to “colonise” education. “Why does he (Grant) want to close schools in poorer areas and then he spends millions on schools in the leafy suburbs of Claremont and Rondebosch?” asks Khan. Mail recently collected 10 000 signatures at Vangate Mall in support of stopping the school closures. NGO Equal Education echoes Khan’s sentiments, believing government was using reasons such as vandalism and poor performance as a scapegoat. “The right to basic education extends to government ensuring a safe learning environment and quality education,” says the NGO’s head of policy, Yoliswa Dwane. “We believe government is trying to take the easy way out by closing these schools. You can’t run away from the fact that our schools are not islands, they are part of a community.

“Where communities are affected by burglaries and gang violence, government needs to take the necessary precautions to ensure school buildings are kept safe,” she says. Equal Education also believes government must prove to the affected communities they have explored all possibilities in trying save these schools from closure. “In the case of Peak View Secondary School, government is saying the school has a bad pass rate but one of the main reasons for this is that the learners are all being taught English as a first language while more than 60% of them have either Afrikaans or Xhosa as a home language,” says Dwane. But Casey argues: “Every single decision the minister makes is about improving the life opportunities for the children of our province. He only wants the very best for them. This sometimes means making tough decisions.” Meanwhile, learners at various schools not facing closure have rallied together in support of their peers. Chesnay Fortuin (13), a Grade 8 learner at Alexander Sinton High School, says this cause is very close to her heart. “We live in an area where some of the children are poor and they don’t have many opportunities in life. I don’t think it is a good idea to close these schools. These children are our future and we cannot allow the government to break the country down piece by piece,” a very enthusiastic Fortuin says. Zikhona Mapukata (16) from Spes Bona High School says she believes the procedure government is following is undemocratic. “The government keeps talking about people stealing from our schools but, in my opinion, the gangsters only take a piece of the school but they (government) are stealing our whole school,” Mapukata says. She says she has an obligation to support learners at the threatened schools. “I sympathise with my fellow Grade 11 learners. It is already a stressful time in our school career and now they have to worry about finding another school to attend,” she says.

EACH day is a precious gift for Reza Price and his family as they anxiously await news of a bone marrow donor who could give him new life.

Hampers of Hope

The 15-year-old has weekly and bi-weekly blood transfusions at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. After the transfusions he feels well enough to go to school, but often feels too ill to continue lessons. In the Price home, in Pinati Estate, there is a sense of underlying calm which is closely guarded by his mother Zeenat. This despite the ever-increasing odds building against her eldest son. Four years ago, the Price family had their world turned upside down when Reza, then 12, was diagnosed with Aplastic Anaemia in September 2009. – each with their own story of how the disease has impacted their lives, and those of families and friends. Breast cancer survivor Zelda Erasmus has a path of faith, perseverance, support and love. Helena Nell’s path has taught her life is preparation for eternity; to grab life with both hands and make it count. Her story is one of hardship as she lost a son to cancer. She believes there’s no place for cancer in her life; her saying is that she lives at 1 Defeat Street. Cancer, she says, needs to be fought on a mental and spiritual level and she has no fear; she fears only God! Kathy Malherbe hopes to help at least one woman to save her life. Now she believes God is bigger and He can destroy the disease. She refuses to live in negativity and chooses to embrace life. Julie Kemp, who loves biking, inspires women through her public speaking. She will take her story globally to educate people on the plight of cancer. Timothy Mlenje never thought of breast cancer when he found a lump in his breast. His advice is that everyone is vulnerable, check your body and report anything strange. Our 351km journey took us from Johannesburg to Midrand, then Vosloorus, Heidelberg, Villiers, Frankfort and Reitz. Very bad roads took us on to beautiful Bethlehem – a place with great affinity because of the name. It gave me new strength and inspiration to tackle the outreach together. . Santos fold against Black Aces LIAM MOSES

A YOUNG and inexperienced Engen Santos FC side will need to improve on their lacklustre opening match performance. This according to coach Mart Nooij, who described his chargers performance against Mpumalanga Black Aces as “disappointing”. The “People’s Team” kicked of their National First Division (NDF) campaign with a forgettable display and an unsatisfactory 1-0 loss in front of less than 100 people at Athlone Stadium on Saturday night. After watching his troops falter against their much less illustrious opposition, Nooij admitted that they would need to pick up their play this weekend. “There are a lot of things that we still need to improve on. We are a young and inexperienced team with an experienced back bone, but the young ones are determined,” says Nooij. “The performance was a little disappointing. We started very nervous and we were not comfortable on the ball.” Both teams started the game shakily and played far too many long balls in the opening 20 min-

utes. When the teams finally shook off their early season rust and settled into the game, around the 35 minute mark, Santos started to dominate possession and territory. After several minutes of patient build-ups, the hosts fashioned their first chance from a counter-attacking move. Stalwart Tyrone Arendse put Edwin Sitayitayi through on goal, with a well weighted through ball. The forward squared the ball for winger Salmaan King. However, a last-ditch tackle stopped King from striking the ball and Aces responded with their own counter attack. After breaking into the Santos box, a Black Aces player was judged to have been fouled and the referee awarded a penalty. Esau Metsweni stepped up and casually struck the ball past Santos keeper Pa Demba Touray, into the top right hand corner of the net to take the lead in the 44th minute. Santos continued to dominate in the remaining minutes of the half, but could not fashion any further chances before the break. They seemed invigorated when they returned after half-

time and came close to levelling matters after just 30 seconds. Sitayitayi managed to lose his marker again, but shot straight at the keeper after receiving the ball in space, on the edge of the box. The striker was proving to be a constant danger to the Aces defence, and five minutes later he headed a cross narrowly wide of goal, after climbing highest to meet a teasing ball from King. Black Aces seemed content to sit on their lead and play on the counter, and they would have been made to pay had Santos not squandered their chances. Nooij bemoaned his team’s lack of composure in front goal and blamed the poor finishing for the loss. “After a quiet 20 minutes we got control of the match and dominated, but then you have to score goals,” says Nooij. “Unfortunately we got a penalty against us from one of their few attacks into our box, but we got the opportunities. We dominated the second half, but we did not score a goal. In this league, and any other league, you need to score goals to win matches.” The Dutch coach refused to speculate on his team’s chances of earning promotion, saying there were still “29 games to go”.
